FADE TO:
EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
The jungle is dense, the sheer heat visible in the atmosphere. Insects crawl over trees, and an anaconda slithers across the ground. In the distance, a cheetah stalks slowly through foliage. We PAN upwards to see moonlight peeking through gaps in the treetops. We slowly ZOOM forwards, through the leaves and branches, for a clearer view of the sky. Stars twinkle invitingly, and the moon shines down on the trees.
Suddenly, a new star-like object appears. Appearing as nothing more than a pinprick at fist, it very slowly grows larger and larger.
EXt. SKY - NIGHT
The object bursts through the atmosphere, flaming wildly with the heat of reentry. It is around six feet long, although what exactly it is is impossible to determine due to it being obscured by flames. It tumbles through the sky at breakneck speed.
EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT
The object falls through the treetops, setting branches and leaves on fire. It crashes to the ground in a clearing, dirt and rocks spraying into the air. Above, the fire spreads, but rain begins to fall upon the jungle. Steam rises into the air, obscuring the crash site.
FADE TO:
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
Several trees have been blackened by the brief forest fire, but no flames are visible anymore. We PAN right to see the edge of a crater, where the object collided with the ground. Steam still rises from this hole, although not in the same volume as before. A hand slowly reaches up over the lip of the crater, gripping onto the dirt. Another hand grabs the edge. A man slowly pulls himself out, keeping his face close to the ground to avoid looking at the sunlight. If he had hair or clothes, the reentry burned them off - he is bald and naked. He manages to raise his upper body over the edge, and rolls sideways onto his back on the ground, covering his eyes with his hands. He breathes deeply, obviously exhausted. He slowly stands up, looking up to the treetops. His eyes now more adjusted to the sunlight, he slowly removes his hand from his face - revealing himself to be CAPTAIN SCARLET. He begins stumbling forwards, as if he is remembering how to walk. As he moves slowly out of the clearing, we PAN upwards and face down to look inside the crater. It is at least fourty feet deep, with some areas still visibly red hot.
EXT. CABIN - DAY
Scarlet staggers uneasily into another clearing. He approaches a small, grey cabin built out of wood at the foot of a cliff. It appears to be abandoned. Scarlet tries uding the door handle to get inside, but it is locked. He takes a few steps back and lurches into the door, throwing his full weight against it. The door collapses inwards, but due to Scarlet's weakness he falls in after it. He bangs his head against the ground.
INT. CABIN - DAY
A flickering light bulb illuminates the windowless cabin. In one corner lies a small and uncomfortable looking cot, and in another is an empty bucket lying next to a tube of toilet paper. The rest of the walls are covered in shelves. Scarlet slowly gets to his feet and begins looking through the shelves. He finds a large bottle of water and takes the top off. Drinking thirstily from it, Scarlet continues looking for something useful. He comes across some folded up clothes and picks them up. Underneath lies a 9mm pistol with an extra clip of ammunition.
INT. DESTINY'S CELL
DESTINY ANGEL lies asleep on a prison cell bed. There are no windows, and the walls, floor and ceiling are made of metal. The only light comes from an unseen source outside the cell, casting blue light and shadows of the cell bars on the rest of the room. A small toilet and sink sit behind a partially walled-off area.
A bright light set into the ceiling suddenly activates, harshly illuminating the room. A loud, droning siren begins to sound. Destiny wakes up quickly, sighs, and slowly pulls herself out of bed. She is wearing a grey prison uniform, and her hair is unkempt and messy. She moves to the bars of her cell and waits for a moment before they slide open. She steps outside.
INT. LONDON CITADEL CELL CATWALK
Outside the cell is a metal catwalk, along which are many more cells. Identically dressed prisoners step out of each one. Between every few cells are corridors leading to unseen rooms and chambers. From the cell next to Destiny's steps CAPTAIN BLUE, bearded and scruffy. Everybody looks as if they have not slept properly in months. They are all standing on a square shaped spot of floor that is a different colour to the rest of the catwalk.
CAPTAIN BLUE Another day, another dollar.
Destiny laughs humourlessly, clearly exhausted and exasperated. The deep, ethereal voice of the Mysterons booms out, echoing sinisterly.
MYSTERONS Prepare for your descent.
The prisoners all stand upright, keeping their legs pressed together and their arms tightly held against the sides of their bodies.
MYSTERONS Descend.
The squares that the prisoners stand on start to lower themselves downwards - they are elevators. We PAN right to see that the catwalk is circular, built around the inside edge of a cylindrical building. The diameter of the circular design of the building is roughly the length of a football field. In the middle is an enormous glass column, blue energy pulsating and crackling within it. We PAN down, revealing that the catwalk is the ninetieth up from the ground floor, and then PAN up to reveal that there are eighty more floors above - the building is absurdly, impossibly tall. The power column reaches up to the top of the ceiling, and is the source of the blue light that illuminated Destiny's cell. The elevators move downwards through square shaped holes in the lower catwalks - there is a single set of elevators that serves all floors. The prisoners continue descending to the ground level.
INT. CABIN - SUNSET
Scarlet is now dressed in slightly baggy beige trousers and a sludgy green t-shirt. He is not wearing shoes or socks. He pulls a pair of binoculars from the shelf, hanging them around his neck from a strap. Opening a small backpack, Scarlet begins gathering and storing many small items; the bottle of water, batteries, wires, a roll of toilet paper, rations, the ammo clip, a knife, a torch and a compass. He slides the pistol into the waistband of his trousers, puts on the backpack and goes outside.
EXT. CABIN - SUNSET
Now visibly stronger and more agile, Scarlet walks towards the cliff and begins scaling it. He moves from small ledge to small ledge until he comes to a large ledge sticking out halfway up the cliff. He sits down and faces the jungle, which stretches on and on. He raises the binoculars to his eyes.
SHOT - SCARLET'S P.O.V.
Scarlet slowly moves the binoculars from left to right, until he notices steam and smoke still rising into the air from his far away crash site. He focuses on the area. Through the treetops, movement is visible.
EXT. JUNGLE - SUNSET
Scarlet walks slowly through the foliage, crouched. Muffled voices are audible from up ahead. He holds his pistol in his hand. He reaches a thick trunked tree and presses his back to it, slowly looking around the side at the clearing. Five S.A.T. (Spectrum Assault Team) agents stand around the crater, looking down. They wear bulky black armour, with blood red visors in their helmets. A crimson Spectrum logo is set into each chestplate. Due to the heat, they wear no armour on their arms, and most of their helmets have been removed, leaving only the front facemask. Their hair is cut extremely short. Scarlet has arrived in the middle of a debate.
S.A.T.A. 1 - else COULD it have been?
S.A.T.A. 2 Debris, maybe a satellite. If it's small enough, it might have burnt up upon impact.
S.A.T.A. 3 If Captain Black thought anything as dangerous as you're suggesting entered the atmosphere, why would he send so few of us to investigate?
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Muttering) Black?
S.A.T.A. 3 (Continuing) Why would he not come here himself?
S.A.T.A. 1 Maybe he gives us more credit than you seem to. He knows he isn't sending in mindless drones.
Scarlet grits his teeth and sighs silently - they're Mysterons.
S.A.T.A. 2 Well, there's nothing here. We're heading back.
S.A.T.A. 2, obviously in charge, begins walking slowly and alertly forwards down a narrow pathway heading deeper into the jungle. The others follow suit, filing after him while keeping their wits about them. Scarlet takes off his backpack and tips the contents out onto the ground. He examines them for a second before screwing the cap off the bottle of water, taking a last swig and pouring the remainder of the liquid into a bush.
EXT. JUNGLE - SUNSET
Further onwards in the jungle, the S.A.T. continues slowly down a narrow pathway, ever vigilant. Above them, Scarlet crawls slowly across a thick branch stretching over the pathway. The gun is in his hand, but it has been altered drastically. Tied to the side of the pistol is a battery, with two wires leading inside the firing mechanism. The barrel of the gun has been pushed into the opening of the empty water bottle, and a hole has been punched in the bottom of the bottle. The bottle has been packed tight with toilet paper. He slowly looks down over the edge of the branch at the agents walking below. His foot accidentally snaps a twig. S.A.T.A. 1, standing at the back, spins around.
S.A.T.A. 1 What was that?
S.A.T.A. 2 Stop playing games and carry on.
S.A.T.A. 1 eventually relaxes slightly and continues walking forwards. Scarlet stands up and runs along the branch, leaping silently onto another one further ahead. As the group passes under the branch, Scarlet swings down, hanging from the branch by one hand. He raises the gun and points it at the back of S.A.T.A. 1's head. PFFFT. The toilet paper silences the shot, and the agent falls to the ground, the sound of electricity crackling through the air. The next S.A.T.A., S.A.T.A. 4, spins around to see the body. Scarlet has vanished.
S.A.T.A. 4 What the hell?
The others turn and look.
S.A.T.A. 3 What the hell happened?
S.A.T.A. 4 I don't know, I heard him fall over so I turned around and -
PFFFT. Seemingly from out of nowhere, a bullet hits S.A.T.A. 4 in the top of the head. He falls to the ground, dead. The remaining three agents raise their machine guns, slowly looking around. S.A.T.A. 2 fires randomly into the jungle canopy, hoping to hit something. S.A.T.A. 3 edges backwards, slowly moving towards a ravine.
S.A.T.A. 2 Where is he?
In a blur of motion, Scarlet falls out of the trees and collides with S.A.T.A. 3, pushing him into the ravine and falling down it with him. S.A.T.A. 3 screams and fires his gun as he disappears. S.A.T.A. 5 looks to the ravine, and then to S.A.T.A. 2, who silently motions for him to inspect it. S.A.TA. 5 slowly edges towards the edge of the ravine, and apprehensively looks over. Immediately, a bullet pierces his visor from below and he falls over backwards. S.A.T.A. 2 looks at S.A.T.A. 1's body.
S.A.T.A. 2 Goddammit, he was right!
He is panicking now. He spins around, looking for a sight of the attacker, until Scarlet appears behind him and audibly cocks his gun, pointing it at his head. S.A.T.A. 2 freezes, not exactly afraid but nervous nonetheless.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I've got a few questions, if you don't mind.
S.A.T.A. 2 Y... you're Paul Metcalfe. Captain Scarlet.
CAPTAIN SCARLET That's right. We both know you're not going to give me any sensitive information, so let's keep it simple. Where are we? What year is it?
S.A.T.A. 2 Africa... 2019.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Why are you taking orders from Captain Black?
S.A.T.A. 2 Because he... he's President Anderson's right hand man.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Anderson? What happened to President Winters?
S.A.T.A. 2 We killed him... Put our replicant of Anderson in office.
Scarlet is visibly shocked by this news.
CAPTAIN SCARLET The President is a Mysteron?
S.A.T.A. 2 Every world leader is a Mysteron.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Jesus...
S.A.T.A. 2 Surprised... Did you not think we'd succeed?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Not like this... I never thought you'd get this far. I never thought it would come to this.
S.A.T.A. 2 Things change, Paul Metcalfe. We control your planet. Maybe you should give up now.
Scarlet rips the bottle off the end of the gun and presses the cold steel to the back of the agent's head.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Shut up. How far to the nearest airport?
S.A.T.A. 2 ...We came from a harbour... twenty three miles west.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Twenty three miles? That's a long way to get lost. Why are you here?
S.A.T.A. 2 We picked up an unidentified object entering the atmosphere... Captain Black sent word for us to investigate.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Does he know I'm here?
Silence. Scarlet moves the gun an inch to the side and fires. BLAM. The bullet whizzes past the agent's ear. S.A.T.A. 2 starts violently, before quickly calming down.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Does Black know I'm here?
S.A.T.A. 2 No... I haven't reported back yet. This isn't the first time a team has been sent out like this... I think Captain Black is paranoid about you coming back.
BLAM. S.A.T.A. 2 crumples to the ground, the back of his head blown open. Scarlet lowers his smoking pistol.
CAPTAIN SCARLET So he should be.
Scarlet looks at a tiny compass set into his binoculars and moves them until he finds west, and begins walking in that direction.
INT. WALSH'S OFFICE - EVENING
A man in an expensive looking navy suit sits at a desk, jacket draped over the back of his chair. This is CRISTOPHER WALSH. He types rapidly into his computer and talks on his telephone headset, making deals and trading stocks. The office is large and spacious, decorated in a modern and minimalistic fashion. Through his window, other buildings in Canary Wharf - the business and banking centre of London - can be seen. Also visible in the distance is an enormous metallic citadel - the Edgar Winters memorial. It is much larger than it was before, however - it now stands at around 170 stories high. Another middle-aged man, DADSWORTH, enters the office as Walsh takes off his headset. They both speak in upper class English accents.
DADSWORTH Beer o' clock, Walsh. Coming?
WALSH Yeah, just give me a few minutes.
Dasworth leaves. Walsh puts on his jacket and begins to turn the computer off when suddenly, he gasps and winces. FLASHES of an older gentleman's face appear.
INT. YOUNG WALSH's CORRIDOR - NIGHT
SHOT - YOUNG WALSH'S P.O.V.
The corridor is in darkness. The only light seeps out of a door that has been left slightly ajar. Hushed voices are heard from behind it. YOUNG WALSH, four years old, reaches out with a tiny hand and pushes the door open. A blinding white light shines out of the door, obscuring whatever is inside.
INT. WALSH'S OFFICE - EVENING
Walsh falls back into his chair, pinching the bridge of his nose tightly.
WALSH Dammit.
The pain passes, and he gets up to leave.
INT. LONDON BAR - NIGHT
Walsh and Dasworth sit at a table in a fancy, expensive looking bar. The place is busy. Walsh is despondent and distracted, and Dasworth is exchanging glances with a blonde woman at the other side of the room.
DADSWORTH What's your problem tonight?
WALSH Nothing... Just a headache.
DADSWORTH Well try and get over it, will you? You're cramping my style.
WALSH I've been getting them a lot lately...
DADSWORTH That's fascinating. Really.
A YOUNG MAN bursts into the bar.
YOUNG MAN There's a patrol squad coming!
All talking quickly stops, and becomes nothing more than a collection of hushed whispers. The sound of a vehicle screeching to a halt is heard from outside, and CAPTAIN BLACK, wearing a black uniform with a Spectrum logo on the left side of the chest, kicks the door open and is followed by two other agents. Silence falls across the room as Black slowly walks inside. A beat passes.
CAPTAIN BLACK Martin Ross.
A few heads turn towards a scared looking middle aged man. Black walks up to him slowly.
CAPTAIN BLACK
Martin Ross, you are being transported to the citadel for detention and questioning in accordance with the Anderson Act of 2018.
He quickly pistol whips Ross in the face, breaking his nose and knocking him unconscious. Ross falls to the ground, and the other two agents begin carrying him out of the building. Silence still fills the room.
EXT. LONDON BAR - NIGHT
Some time later, Walsh and Dadsworth leave the bar and look up to the Edgar Winters memorial - now known as the citadel.
DADSWORTH What are the odds nobody is ever going to see that guy again?
WALSH What do you think he did?
DADSWORTH Does it matter? The Mysterons take in anyone that they want. Odds are somebody overheard him complaining and grassed. (Beat) It's a good thing we didn't get pissed. If our tongues ever get this loose around other people, we'll be next. C'mon, let's go.
They begin walking off down the street.
INT. LONDON CITADEL MACHINE ROOM
Dozens of prisoners sit at machines, performing manual labour. Blue manipulates a machine creating door locks out of squares of brass, while Destiny observes them on the conveyor belt as they pass through the machine and gathers them into boxes.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
Th ground floor of the building. Around the power core, prisoners sit on the metal polishing machine guns, pistols and other weapons as trucks enter and exit bringing in fresh prisoners.
INT. LONDON CITADEL CANTEEN
Hundreds of prisoners sit at metal tables, eating grey sludgy food. Destiny and Blue sit across from each other at a table. S.A.T.A.s walk through the room, making sure nobody talks. Blue and Destiny whisper to each other.
CAPTAIN BLUE Know what today is?
DESTINY ANGEL What?
CAPTAIN BLUE It's our one-year anniversary.
DESTINY ANGEL Christ, we've been in here for a year?
Blue nods.
CAPTAIN BLUE And Paul's been gone for three.
Destiny sighs as a S.A.T.A. notices Blue talking.
S.A.T.A. No talking!
Another prisoner drops a plate on the ground, causing a loud clatter. It shatters. The guards in the room converge on him as he stammers apologetically.
DESTINY ANGEL Do you still mis him?
CAPTAIN BLUE Well, if he were here, I don't think he'd be having a much better time than he is already... wherever he is.
DESTINY ANGEL Three years... it goes by quickly.
CAPTAIN BLUE I'll say.
They become solemnly silent. The sounds of the clumsy prisoner being beaten are heard form offscreen.
DESTINY ANGEL Do you think he's ever going to find a way back?
Blue sighs.
CAPTAIN BLUE No. Black knew what he was doing... That bastard got Paul out of the picture for good. (Beat) If you want my advice, Juliette... you need to try and forget him.
The S.A.T.A. who warned Blue before quickly approaches him and punches him, knocking Blue out of his seat and onto the ground. Destiny covers her mouth in shock.
S.A.T.A. I said no talking!
Blue tries to get up, but the agent kicks him in the back of the head. His head hits the floor hard as he passes out. The S.A.T.A. speaks out, seemingly to nobody.
S.A.T.A. Permission to relocate Adam Svenson to solitary confinement, master?
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
The room is cavernous, taking up the entire top floor of the citadel. It is also almost completely empty. The power core runs through this room as well, reaching up to the ceiling. Everything in the room is cast in a blue light. A floor to ceiling window around twenty meters wide looks out over London. In front of it is an ornate throne-style chair, flanked by a four foot candle holder on each side. The candles glow ominously. Between the throne and the power core lies a large computer console, filled with buttons and screens. Further away is a small, black pod that looks to be able to fit one adult human. The holes of three square elevator ports are set into the ground a few meters away from the throne.
In the throne sits ROBERT ANDERSON, leader of the Mysterons and ruler of the world. He wears a dark suit, a black shirt and a red tie. He speaks out, even though nobody is present in the room.
ANDERSON Permission granted.
On one of the screens, Anderson observes Blue being dragged out of the canteen. He stands up and walks behind the chair, looking out over his dominion. Three elevator squares rise up into the ports. The one on the left contains Martin Ross, his face caked with dried blood, the one on the right contains another scared looking man, and the center elevator contains Black. Anderson barely glances behind him before returning to staring at London through the window. Black approaches Anderson, producing a piece of paper.
ANDERSON Who are they?
CAPTAIN BLACK Gossip magazine publishers. They created this -
He gives the paper to Anderson.
CAPTAIN BLACK - with the intention of publishing it within their pages.
Anderson observes the paper. It is a photograph of Adolf Hitler at a Nazi rally with Anderson's face cleverly manipulated onto the head of the infamous dictator. A caption reads 'WE SWORE "NEVER AGAIN" - WHY THE CHANGE OF HEART?'. Anderson's mouth curls up into the faintest hint of a smile - he is amused. He returns to looking through the window.
ANDERSON Kill them.
Black begins walking back towards the two men, pulling a pistol from a holster on his leg.
MARTIN ROSS No, wait!
Black shoots him in the head, silencing him. Before Ross' body has even hit the floor, Black adjusts his aim and shoots the second publisher. They both slump forwards, their blood seeping out over the metal floor. Anderson walks to the control console and presses a button. Two green rings of light begin passing over Ross' body, and then the body of the second man. He once again walks to the window - he clearly enjoys looking out over his kingdom.
ANDERSON Brief their replicants. Their magazine is to be reinvented into supplemental material for the Sunday edition of the World Chronicle. (Beat) Ah, what would I do without you, Captain?
Black cocks his head ever so slightly, quizzical.
ANDERSON I can't think of anyone more loyal or reliable than you. You're a fine bodyguard, an excellent agent... We make a good team. I, the leader, the intelligence, and you, the muscle, the brute force.
Black's face falls - he is displeased.
CAPTAIN BLACK A blunt instrument.
ANDERSON Yes, that's right. The ultimate blunt instrument. (Beat) Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to be left alone.
CAPTAIN BLACK Yes... master.
Black tensely walks to the elevator, as if he is holding himself back from saying something. As the elevator descends, his eyes are coolly fixated on Anderson.
EXT. AFRICAN HARBOUR - NIGHT
Rain pours down. The harbour consists of a single dock, and S.A.T. agents sit in a windowed booth. A crane loads large crates onto a massive freighter. Two workers walk down a ramp off the deck to the dock, laughing and joking in Afrikaans. A bell rings, and the ship begins slowly moving away.
EXT. FREIGHTER CARGO DECK - NIGHT
A guard in a raincoat patrols the deck, his torch cutting through the darkness. He shines the light on the doors of the crates until he notices that one of them, a dark red container, has an unfastened lock. He slowly approaches it, and pulls the door open.
INT. CARGO CONTAINER - NIGHT
The guard slowly walks into the container, which contains a great deal of tinned and frozen food. He walks to one end, inspecting every last nook and cranny, before slowly shrugging and leaving the container. he shuts the door, and the metallic scraping of a lock being fastened is heard. A snapping noise is heard from the top of the crate, and a broken flare falls to the floor. It begins emitting a red light, illuminating the crate. We PAN up to see Scarlet lying face-down in midair, pushing against opposite walls of the container with his hands and feet. He allows himself to drop onto a pile of flour packages to avoid making a noise, and slides to the metal floor of the crate.
EXT. OCEAN - NIGHT
The freighter sails away into the night.
FADE TO:
INT. TEXAS HARBOUR - DAY
The freighter is now docked at a large harbour in Texas. The dark red container touches down on the ground of the shipping yard, a crane maneuvering it into place.
INT. BOX
A torch lies activated and pointing upwards, lighting the cramped space. Scarlet, curled up tightly and asleep, wakes up as the container makes contact with the ground. His hair is now much longer, and he sports a messy beard - the ship has taken weeks to reach its destination. He kicks against the side of the box, causing the wall to fall over.
INT. CARGO CONTAINER
The container is pitch black. Scarlet shines his torch on the food box he has been sleeping in to avoid detection. He carefully places the cardboard wall back to where it was so that the box appears undamaged. He straps on his backpack and presses himself to the wall next to the door.
EXT. SHIPPING YARD - DAY
A S.A.T.A. walks out of a blue crate, having finished inspecting it, and strides towards the dark red container.
INT. CARGO CONTAINER
The door swings open and the S.A.T.A. walks inside, shining a torch on the boxes and packages inside as he walks around the container. Scarlet, silhouetted by the glaring sunlight, runs out of the open doorway.
EXT. SHIPPING YARD - DAY
Scarlet sprints towards the next container, hiding behind it before carefully looking around the edges to make sure no guards are watching. He repeats this, running from container to container, until he reaches a barbed wire fence. Beyond it, the Texas desert stretches onwards. Scarlet takes a running leap at the fence and pulls himself over, cutting his chest, legs and arms deeply. He falls to the ground on the other side, blood seeping into his clothes, until the wounds begin healing. He gets to his feet, and begins walking onwards - a free man unsure of his direction. He starts to break into a run, looking over his shoulder to make sure nobody sees him.
FADE TO:
EXT. DESERT - DAY
Scarlet walks across the sun-drenched sand, with no roads or buildings in site. The soles of his bare feet are scorched red.
FADE TO:
EXT. DESERT - SUNSET
Scarlet continues walking, looking exhausted and dehydrated. A long way ahead, he spots the top of a building reaching out of what appears to be a quarry.
EXT. DESERT - NIGHT
Scarlet crawls on his stomach, pulling himself along with his hands and knees. He has not collapsed, but is moving covertly so as not to be seen. He crawls to the edge of a ridge and looks down. A quarry a kilometre wide and deep has been blasted out of the sand and walled with sheets of metal. The walls are not straight, but curve downwards to form a bowl shape. In the middle of the quarry lies a metallic prison citadel - around a third the size of the London citadel. A metal road leads from the lip of the bowl to a spot a few meters away from the citadel. Two S.A.T. trucks are parked there. Scarlet pulls the binoculars out of his backpack and holds them to his eyes.
SHOT - SCARLET'S P.O.V.
Two armed S.A.T. agents stand by the large door. A truck drives down the road, across the metal floor of the bowl and towards the citadel. The door slides open, and the truck drives inside. The door remains open, and thirty seconds later the truck drives out again and parks next to the others. The S.A.T.A. who was driving jumps out and walks inside the citadel before the door slides shut again.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What is this place?
BACK TO SHOT
Scarlet puts down the binoculars and begins crawling along the edge of the quarry.
FADE TO:
EXT. DESERT - NIGHT
Scarlet lies in a rare patch of shrubbery, waiting. Two headlights appear far off in the difference. The truck becomes closer and closer, and as it passes the bush, Scarlet begins running after it.
EXT. TEXAS CITADEL - NIGHT
The lights of a truck appear over the rim of the quarry, and the vehicle begins moving down the ramp. The two guards remain steadfast. The doors slide open, and as the truck moves into the building, we see that Scarlet is hanging on to the back of it, pressed tightly against the back doors to avoid detection.
INT. TEXAS CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
The truck glides over the smooth metal floor, which is free of prisoners and guards as it is night time. The entire building is identical to the London citadel, except smaller. The power core pulsates, casting a blue glow over the room. The truck begins approaching an open corridor. Scarlet jumps off the back of the truck and slides behind a crate of supplies, pressing his back against it to take cover. The truck pulls up by the corridor, and the agent driving jumps out of the cab. He walks to the back of the truck and unlocks the doors as another S.A.T.A. emerges from the corridor. The driver pulls a handcuffed male prisoner, OLD MAN, out of the truck.
S.A.T.A. 1 That's the eighth new arrival tonight. What happened?
S.A.T.A. 2 There was a bar fight in Odessa. Most of the perpetrators scattered before we got there, so we've been rounding them up all night. This should be the last of them.
S.A.T.A. 1 Good. Take him to Level 27 of the prison shaft -
CAPTAIN SCARLET Prison...
S.A.T.A. 1 (Continuing) - and then park your vehicle outside. My shift is over, I'm turning in for the night.
S.A.T.A. 2 Yes sir.
S.A.T.A. 2 leads the prisoner to an elevator, which quickly ascends upwards. S.A.T.A. 1 turns and walks back down the corridor, which is marked 'Hygiene Block'. Scarlet takes a deep breath and jogs covertly after him.
INT. TEXAS CITADEL HYGIENE BLOCK
S.A.T.A. 2 walks down the corridor and turns left into a room marked as 'Hygiene Room 1'. Seven other identical doorways, similarly labeled, populate the corridor. Scarlet presses his back against the wall and slowly edges towards the door. The metallic clinking of armour being removed is heard from the room, and then the sound of water spraying emerges through the open doorway. Scarlet peeks around the corner of the room. Eight metal shower cubicles are lined up on the back wall of the room, with a long metal bench in the middle. One cubicle is closed, the shower spraying down onto S.A.T.A. 1, whose naked feet are visible under the frame of the door. His armour and rifle are laid out neatly on the bench. Scarlet creeps into the room, clearly thinking of what to do next. He looks down at the armour.
INT. TEXAS CITADEL CORRIDOR
C.U. SCARLET'S FEET
Scarlet's boot-clad feet make click-clack noises against the metal floors. One of the straps on his left boot is not done up properly.
BACK TO SHOT
Scarlet is clad in S.A.T. armour, carrying the rifle as he marches down the corridor. He stops to shift uncomfortably, and carries on.
INT. TEXAS CITADEL PRISON CATWALK
Scarlet emerges out of a corridor onto the catwalk and peers down. He is twenty seven floors up. He begins slowly walking around the catwalk, peering into the cells. Most prisoners are asleep. He passes the cell of the Old Man, who is curled up on his bunk shivering, evidently in discomfort. Scarlet notices him and stops, leaning towards the bars to whisper.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Hey. Hey!
OLD MAN What do you want?
CAPTAIN SCARLET You're the only person who's awake. What is this place?
OLD MAN Is that supposed to be a joke?
CAPTAIN SCARLET No. Listen, I know may sound odd, but I'm not a real guard.
OLD MAN Then who are you?
CAPTAIN SCARLET That... That's a good question...
OLD MAN Look, if this is some kind of trick to get me to step out of line or something so you can punish me, then no thanks.
A beat passes. The Old Man notices Scarlet's loose boot and gets up, shuffling towards the cell bars.
OLD MAN Your boot isn't on properly...
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
OLD MAN I said your -
A S.A.T.A. emerges out of the corridor, also on a patrol. Scarlet does a double take and turns back to the Old Man.
CAPTAIN SCARLET If you try grabbing my arm through the bars one more time, I'll blow your head off!
The agent walks past, chuckling.
S.A.T.A. They never learn, do they?
He continues around the catwalk. They return to whispering.
OLD MAN I said your boot isn't on properly. You wouldn't make a mistake like that if you were one of them... hrrrm.
CAPTAIN SCARLET So, you believe me?
OLD MAN I suppose so. If you're not a guard, how did you get in?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Snuck inside on a truck, stole a uniform. What is this, a prison?
OLD MAN Have... you been out of town?
CAPTAIN SCARLET ...Something like that.
The Old Man raises his eyebrows.
OLD MAN Must have been in a pretty secluded place. The Mysterons built hundreds of these prisons when they took over. They take in people who are stupid or brave enough o subvert them, but not important enough to do... whatever they do to those poor souls who lose their minds.
CAPTAIN SCARLET So they're not replicating everyone?
OLD MAN Nope, just the prominent folk... Politicians, media moguls... Men and women who can influence the masses to do what they're told. President Anderson was one of the first to be turned... He lives in London now. That's where the biggest tower in the world is.
Scarlet nods.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Ok. Thanks for your help.
He begins to walk away.
OLD MAN Wait!
CAPTAIN SCARLET What is it?
OLD MAN Get me out of here!
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
OLD MAN Look, I have some... business I need to attend to. There are still things that require my attention. My wife. Rosie. I just want to see her again.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Sighing) If I break you out, I have to take everyone, and I can't do that without getting people killed.
OLD MAN You don't have to take everyone. Like you said... I'm the only one who's awake.
Scarlet sighs.
INT. TEXAS CITADEL MAINFRAME ROOM
A lone S.A.T.A. sits at a bank of computers, monitoring various screens and monitors. Servers in the room hum noisily. Scarlet walks inside.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Turn in for the night. It's my shift now.
The agent looks up at Scarlet and slowly gets to his feet.
S.A.T.A. My shift doesn't end for another hour.
CAPTAIN SCARLET The schedule... has been altered.
S.A.T.A. I wasn't informed...
CAPTAIN SCARLET It's a recent change. If you want to doubt the word of a commanding officer and disobey his orders, by all means do. I'm not the one who'll face being reprimanded.
S.A.T.A. ...Yes, sir.
The agent leaves the room. Scarlet sits down at the computer and begins scrolling through a diagram of the prison shaft until he reaches Level 27. He scrolls through the cells until a camera feed of the Old Man's cell appears on the screen. He is once again curled up on his bunk. Scarlet presses a button reading 'Manual unlock' and gets up to leave. As he walks towards the door, he hesitates as if thinking about something, and sits back down at the computer. He closes the diagram of the Texas citadel and brings up a search box.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Murmuring) Where are you all?
He types 'Charles Gray' into the box. The screen reads 'Charles Gray A.K.A. Colonel White - Current whereabouts unknown'. Scarlet sighs and types in 'Adam Svenson'. The screen reads 'Adam Svenson A.K.A. Captain Blue - Currently detained in London citadel'. Scarlet quickly clicks on his name, bringing up a security camera feed. Blue sits awake on his bunk, continuously throwing a rubber ball against the opposite wall and catching it as it bounces back. Text in the corner of the feed reads 'Level 90, Cell 34'. Scarlet types in 'Juliette Pointon'. The screen reads 'Juliette Pointon - Currently detained in London citadel'. Scarlet clicks on the name. Her video feed, reading 'Level 90, Cell 35' appears. She is sleeping on her bunk. Scarlet observes this feed for a few moment, his finger lingering over the 'Close' button. Eventually, he closes the screen and gets up, leaving the room.
INT. OLD MAN'S CELL
The barred door slides open. The Old Man looks up to see Scarlet sanding in the open doorway.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Let's go.
INT. TEXAS CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
The elevator containing Scarlet and the Old Man reaches the ground. They begin walking across the deserted floor towards the main doors, which begin sliding open as they approach.
OLD MAN Austin citadel.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
OLD MAN If anyone asks, you're taking me to the Austin citadel.
EXT. TEXAS CITADEL - NIGHT
They walk outside, but one of the two guards holds out a hand, gesturing for them to stop.
S.A.T.A. Where are you taking him?
Scarlet hesitates, looks to his 'prisoner', and turns back to the S.A.T.A.
CAPTAIN SCARLET He's being transferred to the Austin citadel.
The agent laughs.
S.A.T.A. I don't know how long an old guy like him will last in Austin. Ok, get going.
The pair walk to a truck. Scarlet opens the back doors and loads the Old Man in before climbing into the cab and starting to drive towards the ramp.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
There is no wall between the driver and prisoner compartments, so Scarlet and the Old Man are essentially in the same compartment.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Who calls them citadels?
OLD MAN They do.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What's so different about the one in Austin?
OLD MAN I heard it's more intensive. Guards are more violent. People sometimes die within weeks of getting there.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Well, I -
KZZZZZZRHT. A thunderous crack of lightning is heard, shaking the ground. Scarlet jumps and slams on the brakes. He pulls his helmet off and throws it onto the seat next to him, revealing his scraggly hair and beard.
EXT. DESERT - NIGHT
Now out of the quarry and out of sight, Scarlet jumps out of the door and looks back to the citadel. KZZZZZZRHT. The roof of the building shoots out a burst of electricity, creating a deep rumbling noise and causing the ground to shake in reply. The burst moves upwards, dispersing amongst the clouds, which glow bright blue briefly before everything returns to normally. A few seconds pass, and the same thing happens again. Scarlet opens the back door and leans in, uncuffing the Old Man.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We're far away enough now, you can ride up front.
The Old Man jumps down uneasily, looking at the tower as it shoots out bursts of electricity.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Have you seen any of those towers do that before?
OLD MAN I've heard about it.
They move round to the front of the truck and climb into the cab.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
Scarlet begins driving again.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What is it?
OLD MAN Well, I heard from my friend's nephew that the citadels are powered by underground fuel cells. The energy in them is converted to electricity and runs to the rest of the building through that glass tube in the middle of it.
CAPTAIN SCARLET So, it's a power core?
OLD MAN Yeah, I think he called it that too. Anyway, if the core gets to a point where it's holding excess energy, they shoot it out through a lens in the roof.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Disperse it into the sky. Hm, makes sense. Electricity is devastating to Mysterons; makes sense that they'd want to avoid an overload. How did your friend's nephew find that out?
OLD MAN He, uh... He got sent there. He got out.
CAPTAIN SCARLET But if he got let out... that means...
OLD MAN Yep.
A beat passes.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I'm sorry.
OLD MAN Hotshot TV executive. Makes sense that they'd off him and replace him. Ah, he was a clever kid. Smart mouth, mind you. Always getting himself into trouble when he was young.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Like you tonight? They said you started a bar fight.
OLD MAN Sometimes... Sometimes it gets to you. You know? I just so angry about... well, about everything. I was in a bitch of a mood. So, the first person to look at me funny got their nose broken. Don't know what I was thinking, old fella like me. They must've thought I was crazy.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What happened?
OLD MAN I got what was coming to me. Hard. We heard the trucks speeding towards the bar... everyone scattered. But I can't run like I used to... Stopped in an alley to, uh, to catch my breath. They picked me up there.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Do they only come around when there's a disturbance?
OLD MAN More or less. Most folk are able to live life pretty much how they used to... but they have to be careful. They say or do one thing out of line, and the... the illusion of normal life comes crashing down.
CAPTAIN SCARLET How long ago did the Mysterons go public?
OLD MAN 'Bout a year ago. President Anderson went on the TV and came out as one. Before you know it, those armoured guys, they... they stormed the streets. Killed anyone brave enough to face up to them...
CAPTAIN SCARLET Why have people just accepted it?
OLD MAN Mysterons promised us oil, natural resources like that. And they were true to their word... but I don't think anybody knew what price we'd have to pay.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I know how they feel...
A beat passes.
CAPTAIN SCARLET So where are we going?
OLD MAN Small town outside Odessa. I'll give you directions when we get nearer.
EXT. DESERT - NIGHT
The truck drives down the road into the night.
FADE TO:
EXT. DESERT - DAY
The truck sits parked at the bottom of a tall, steep hill. In the distance, a small town is visible. Scarlet and the Old Man get out of the truck.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We're not going into town?
OLD MAN No... my Rosie lives up here.
He tries to start walking up the hill, but he stumbles. Scarlet moves towards him quickly, helping him to his feet and supporting him.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Easy. I've got you.
OLD MAN Can you... can you help me get up to the top?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Yeah.
OLD MAN And then I'll be out of your hair.
CAPTAIN SCARLET That's fine.
They slowly begin walking up the hill, the Old Man leaning on Scarlet. We PAN down to see drops of blood soaking into the sand, unnoticed by the pair.
EXT. HILLTOP - DAY
The pair make it over the edge of the hill, emerging onto a plateau. The Old Man looks sad at what he sees, and Scarlet appears slightly shocked.
OLD MAN I can.. I can make it on my own from here.
CAPTAIN SCARLET ...Sure.
He stumbles forwards. Scarlet remains behind, unsure of how to proceed. We PAN around to reveal a small graveyard on top of the hill, enclosed by black railings. The Old Man edges slowly through the front gates.
EXT. DESERT GRAVEYARD - DAY
Scarlet slowly walks through the rows of gravestones until he spots the Old Man slumped against one. He approaches him, slowly but respectfully. The Old Man looks up at him, tears in his eyes and his face sweating.
OLD MAN Remember the brave people I told you about? The ones who tried to fight back? She was one of them.
Scarlet stands in the sweltering heat, sweat running down his face and from his hair before being absorbed by the rubber undersuit of his armour around his neck. He tries to say something, but is unsure of how proceed, and so closes his mouth again. He looks down and notices blood soaking into the sand around the Old Man.
CAPTAIN SCARLET L... Look!
The Old Man looks down at the blood and opens his coat, revealing a large blood stain in his shirt. A thin rip sits in the middle of the stain - a stab wound.
OLD MAN Like I said. Got what was coming to me. I shouldn't have gone out... not last night. Not on the anniversary of...
His tears fall harder and faster now.
OLD MAN I was asking for trouble.
CAPTAIN SCARLET How did you stop it bleeding for so long? Long enough to stop me noticing?
OLD MAN Tissues, handkerchiefs... I didn't want you to know. Didn't want you to stop and try and stitch it up... Cause this is all I have left. I've seen her again... I don't have anything left to do. No loose ends. Nothing... Nothing requires my attention anymore.
CAPTAIN SCARLET ...That must be a comforting thought.
OLD MAN It is...
He winces uncomfortably, growing weaker by the second. He closes up his coat again.
OLD MAN How do I look?
CAPTAIN SCARLET You look... you look dignified. You look fulfilled.
OLD MAN Th... Thank you. For everything.
He smiles, and slowly closes his eyes. He gives a last, rattling breath. He is dead.
CAPTAIN SCARLET You look at peace.
Scarlet stands looking over the body of the man for a long while, a contemplative look on his face.
EXT. TEXAS TOWN - DAY
Scarlet walks down the street in his armour and carrying his rifle - he is in disguise. Pedestrians on the street grow quiet and still as he nears them, before hurrying off once he has passed. He passes a newspaper stand and gives it a double take. He picks up a newspaper and holds it up to read the front page, hands shaking slightly.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What the...
EXT. TEXAS ALLEY - DAY
Scarlet runs into the alleyway and rips his helmet off, tossing it onto the ground and holding the paper up to read it. The paper is entitled 'The World Chronicle'. The headline reads "ROGUE GOVERNMENT AGENCY 'SPECTRUM' DISBANDED". We FLASH quickly to various sections of the article: 'President Robert Anderson today made public' '...intelligence agency named Spectrum formed by the United Nations' '...covertly defected in 2016' '...orchestrated the assassinations of US President Edgar Winters and Director General of the United Asian Republic Kin Sang' '...were discovered to have gone rogue and disbanded a year ago, but President Anderson decreed that a full investigation should take place before the story was made public'.
Scarlet opens the paper and flicks through the pages - there is a four page expose of crimes committed by the Mysterons but not blamed on Spectrum and other lies. He closes the paper, and his eyes fall on a certain section 'Written by Daniel Ambrose'. Scarlet stands up, fury in his eyes. He drops the paper on the ground, slowly places his helmet back on, and begins to walk away. We PAN down to see the paper lying open, a black and white photograph of a man dressed in black on a rooftop. He is holding a sniper rifle pulling a mask off his head, but the photo is too blurred to see his face. The caption reads 'Is this President Winters' assassin?'
EXT. TEXAS AIRPORT - DAY
A large plane sits on the runway, being refueled and loaded with boxes of cargo. S.A.T. agents begin walking into the cargo hold in formation, ready to guard the plane on its journey. As the cargo bay begins to close, one more agent walks aboard - Scarlet.
INT. LONDON TRAIN STATION - DAY
Walsh walks through the train station, stopping at a newsstand.
WALSH Newspaper, please.
The newsagent removes a copy of the World Chronicle - it is the only paper the stand is stocked with. Walsh hands over some change.
WALSH Thanks.
He walks away, looking at the front page. The issue is dated for the day after the one Scarlet read in Texas. The page consists of a portrait of President Anderson, reading 'Our courageous benefactor soldiers on'.
WALSH Oh, for Christ's sake...
He looks at the small photograph and name of the author - Daniel Ambrose.
WALSH Ambrose, you -
He gasps, suddenly in pain. He drops the paper and pinches the bridge of his nose, groaning.
A dark room lies within, the only light coming from a lamp on a desk belonging to an ELDER GENTLEMAN. He is surrounded by dark figures. They talk in hushed voices, their conversation slowly growing louder. Before we can make any words out, the light of the lamp expands and obscures the screen.
INT. LONDON TRAIN STATION - DAY
Walsh opens his eyes. He is lying face up on the ground of the train station. People walk past whispering, too afraid to lend a hand. A S.A.T.A. approaches him.
S.A.T.A. Is there a problem?
Walsh begins getting to his feet.
WALSH I, uh... No, sir.
The agent walks away. Walsh observes him coolly before continuing on his way.
EXT. LONDON STREET - NIGHT
The street is not as crowded as the time of night would suggest. Those who are out keep strictly to themselves. Scarlet walks down the pavement in civilian clothes - jeans, a dark t-shirt, and a long dark coat. Even his scruffy appearance does not attract stray looks - pedestrians look almost exclusively at the floor. Slung over Scarlet's shoulder is a heavy looking bag. Speakers attached to lampposts blare out.
MYSTERONS Curfew begins in thirty minutes. Return home within this time, or face punishment.
Scarlet looks disgustedly at one of the speakers as he walks past it. Eventually, he stops walking and looks upwards - the citadel is now visible, towering over the city, ever present, ever watching. We PUSH IN on Scarlet's angry face.
INT. BUS - NIGHT
Scarlet sits at the back of an almost empty bus. Resting on his lap is a map of London. With a red pen, he begins circling various buildings.
INT. RUNDOWN APARTMENT - NIGHT
The front door is kicked in. Scarlet walks inside, finding the apartment to be empty.
INT. BUS - NIGHT
On another bus, Scarlet crosses out a red circle, which is one of around twenty..
INT. ABANDONED HOUSE - NIGHT
The kitchen window of a tiny house slides open, and Scarlet climbs in.
INT. BUS - NIGHT
Scarlet crosses out another circle. Twelve have been crossed out now.
INT. SAFEHOUSE ENTRANCE HALL - NIGHT
The lock is smashed inwards, and the door slowly swings open. Scarlet walks into the room, unable to see properly due to the lights being switched off. He quietly closes the door behind him and begins walking slowly across the entrance hall. He pushes open another door, revealing a sparse living room. CLICK. The cocking of a shotgun is heard from behind Scarlet, and the entrance hall light switches on. Scarlet freezes, becoming very still. A scruffy, fatigued looking COLONEL WHITE, a white haired Englishman, stands behind him, aiming the shotgun at his back.
COLONEL WHITE Turn around.
Scarlet does nothing. The faintest hint of an amused smile crosses his lips.
COLONEL WHITE Turn around!
Scarlet slowly turns around in a circle.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Easy now.
COLONEL WHITE Who are you?
CAPTAIN SCARLET You don't recognise me?
White appears incredulous, but then examines Scarlet's face. His look of anger turns to amazement, and he lowers the shotgun.
COLONEL WHITE P... Paul? Paul Metcalfe?
Scarlet grins.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Who else?
White drops the shotgun and embraces Scarlet.
COLONEL WHITE We thought you would never make it back!
They part.
COLONEL WHITE But my God, you stink.
Scarlet laughs.
COLONEL WHITE And you need a shave.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
Scarlet and White sit at a square table, joined by LIEUTENANT GREEN, a black American man, and TELUM, a young, gangly Scotsman. They drink steaming mugs of tea.
COLONEL WHITE How did you find where we were?
Scarlet holds up the map. All but one circle has been crossed out.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I made a list of all the safehouses we had in London and searched them all.
COLONEL WHITE Good thinking. We're constantly being hunted... But we never kept records of where our safehouses are.
LIEUTENANT GREEN You realise... You realise that Adam and Juliette aren't with us, right? The Mysterons got to them.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I know. I broke into one of their prisons in Texas -
He unzips his bag, drawing out his stolen helmet.
CAPTAIN SCARLET - and found their names in the database of the London citadel. I figured you wouldn't be too far away.
TELUM How did you get back?
EXT. SPACE
FLASHBACK - The Spectrum space shuttle moves towards Earth. An escape capsule rockets out of it in the opposite direction.
INT. ESCAPE CAPSULE
FLASHBACK - Scarlet bangs his fists against the window set into one end of the capsule and shouts, the skin on his knuckles breaking and smearing blood on the glass. Through the window, the shuttle grows smaller and smaller, as does Earth.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) Well, it took me a while to work that out.
INT. ESCAPE CAPSULE
FLASHBACK - Sometime later, Scarlet sits slumped against the capsule wall, looking exhausted and utterly dejected.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) No matter how hard I tried, the door wouldn't budge.
Scarlet looks up to the wall opposite the window and notices a blue light glowing from behind it. He gets up, forced to crouch by the cramped space, and walks towards it, running his hand over the surface. As it passes over the light, the wall slides open, revealing a glowing blue button set into the wall. A set of instructions are engraved into the wall.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) After a while, a homing beacon activated itself. Obviously, nothing was in range to receive the signal... But the instructions said that if the device sending out the signal was destroyed, the door would open. I guess it was designed for when the capsule got taken onboard by another ship or touched down on ground. At that point... anything was worth a try.
Scarlet crouch walks to the other end of the capsule, the door with the window. He looks out. Earth is not visible. Scarlet grips onto a rung on the door and pulls a pistol out of his thigh holster. He slowly raises it to aim at the blue homing beacon. He fires, smashing the button. Instantly, the lights go out and several small explosions go off around the frame of the door, blasting it off it's hinges. Scarlet, instantly gasping for air, swings his arms outside the edge of the door, grips the door frame, and pulls himself out of the capsule, pushing away from the chassis.
EXT. SPACE
FLASHBACK - The capsule continues on its course, and Scarlet floats n the opposite direction - back to where he came from. Within seconds of leaving the capsule, ice forms on Scarlet's body, encasing him completely.

INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
TELUM I didn't even know the door COULD be opened in space... and I designed the thing.
COLONEL WHITE So you floated through space for... for three years to get back here?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Yep. And none too soon, it looks like.
Scarlet removes his stolen copy of the World Chronicle from his bag and tosses it onto the tabletop.
COLONEL WHITE We already know about that.
CAPTAIN SCARLET How can you stand by and let them do this? You're named as "the twisted mastermind behind the perversion of the original ideals Spectrum set out to uphold". I've been here for a few weeks, and even I know that the Mysterons did these things, not us.
COLONEL WHITE What can we do? The Mysterons have almost everybody locked up in their citadels. We're all that's left of Spectrum. (Beat) We're the lucky ones.
A beat passes.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Well, then some people are just going to have to get luckier.
LIEUTENANT GREEN What are you talking about?
CAPTAIN SCARLET We're breaking Blue and Destiny out.
EXT. LONDON CITADEL - NIGHT Scarlet, dressed in full armour, approaches the S.A.T.A.s guarding the main doors of the London citadel and begins conversing with them as we PAN up to see the tower reaching up into the clouds.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) I've done it before. I know every way in...
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
Scarlet and Telum stand alone in the kitchen. Scarlet shows Telum the pistol modified with a battery.
TELUM Hm. Impressive.
He opens a kitchen cabinet, and draws out two similarly modified pistols.
TELUM Great minds, I suppose.
EXT. LONDON CITADEL - NIGHT
A fleet of S.A.T. trucks is parked to the side of the citadel. Scarlet slowly approaches them, making sure he is not being watched.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) I know where the escape routes are...
C.U. SCARLET'S HAND A switchblade is in his hand. He flicks the blade out.
INT. SAFEHOUSE ENTRANCE HALL - NIGHT
Scarlet stands in the entrance hall, putting his armour on.
INT. LONDON CITADEL MAINFRAME ROOM
We are looking at a closeup view of a computer screen. A video feed shows Blue within his cell, once again bouncing a ball against the wall and catching it. The cursor moves to the 'Manual unlock' icon and clicks it.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) And I know where the keys are kept.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
COLONEL WHITE
Let's say you can pull this off... Just getting Adam and Juliette out won't solve anything. There'll be six of us rather than four... against the tens of thousands of soldiers the Mysterons have.
CAPTAIN SCARLET
Taking any more than two will attract too much attention. Blue is one of our most senior captains, and Destiny is commander of the Angel squad - tactically speaking, they're high priorities. If we can free them...
INT. BLUE'S CELL
Blue sits on the bed, bouncing his ball against the wall, catching it and repeating this.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (V.O.) ...We can start something much bigger.
The door slides open, and Scarlet's armoured shadow is cast against the back wall by the light of the power core. Without even looking up, Blue holds out his ball.
CAPTAIN BLUE What do you want? Come to confiscate my contraband?
CAPTAIN SCARLET That depends on what you have.
We see the shadow of Scarlet pull his helmet off. Blue looks up, amazed.
INT. DESTINY'S CELL
Destiny lies asleep on her bunk. The bars slide open and Scarlet walks in, his helmet still off. His hair has been cut short, and he is clean shaven. He gently sits down on the bunk and puts his hands on her shoulders, shaking her gently. She stirs slowly.
DESTINY ANGEL Wh... What is it?
She looks up at Scarlet, any tiredness instantly vanishing from his face. She sits bolt upright and hugs him tightly.
DESTINY ANGEL Paul!
Scarlet laughs, happy.
CAPTAIN SCARLET It's good to see you too.
Destiny leans her face towards Scarlet's to kiss him. He pulls back slightly, clearly hesitant. A beat passes
DESTINY ANGEL What's wrong?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I, uh...
Blue walks in, looking over his shoulder to make sure is not seen..
CAPTAIN BLUE I hate to break this up, but I think you'd both agree that getting caught escaping might not be the best idea if we want to, y'know, escape.
Scarlet sighs.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Let's go.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
The three walk across the expansive metal floor towards a parked truck. Scarlet now has his helmet on, and carries his machine gun in one hand. Other S.A.T. agents mill about, moving between corridors and walking across the floor.
CAPTAIN BLUE (Whispering) This is it? This is your brilliant plan?
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Whispering) It's worked before. Unless you want to get thrown back in your cell, shut up!
CAPTAIN BLACK (O.S.) Stop right there.
Black emerges from a corridor, flanked by two agents. The other S.A.T.A.s on the ground floor stop what they are doing to watch the scene unfold.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Whispering) Shit...
CAPTAIN BLUE (Whispering) My thoughts exactly.
CAPTAIN BLACK Those are maximum risk prisoners. Where are you taking them?
A long moment passes. Scarlet is clearly nervous.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I, uh, I've been ordered to transport them to the Yorkshire citadel.
CAPTAIN BLACK All transfers go through me. I've hear of no such order... Which isn't surprising considering President Anderson has specifically ordered that these two prisoners remain in London.
An uneasy silence falls.
CAPTAIN BLACK Take off your helmet.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
CAPTAIN BLACK I said take off your helmet.
The S.A.T.A.s in the room slowly begin to grip their guns tightly. Scarlet's free hand clenches into a fist in frustration. He raises it slowly to his face, and swiftly pulls his helmet off, dropping it on the floor. His face is full of anger, his teeth gritted. Black's face is emotionless - the fact that Scarlet is before him doesn't even seem to register until he leans forwards and looks into his eyes. He then begins to smile sadistically.
CAPTAIN BLACK Well, well... It IS you, Paul Metcalfe. The last time I saw you, you were banging against the window of an escape pod for dear life while I shot you into deep space.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Sorry. Didn't take.
CAPTAIN BLACK I can see that. I wondered if it was you who stole that set of armour... freed the prisoner we found dead in a graveyard in the desert. Did you really think that you could get away with the same trick twice?
He begins pacing slowly. Scarlet's face remains angry and defiant.
CAPTAIN BLACK So, what are we going to do about this? Hm? President Anderson would certainly appreciate a few words with you...
CAPTAIN SCARLET I think he'll have to wait.
Scarlet swings his rifle upwards, smashing Black in the face, and tosses it to the floor. Within seconds, he pulls out his pistol and grabs Black around the neck, taking him as a human shield. Blue and Destiny pull out an electric pistol each, aiming them at any S.A.T. agents who dare raise their guns or move.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Our guns have electric currents running through the the firing mechanism. If any of you so much as move, I'll shoot Captain Black in the head... I think you all know what the chances of him recovering from an electric bullet are.
Walking backwards, Scarlet begins dragging Black towards the truck, with Blue and Destiny following suit. Black spits out the blood pouring from his nose into his mouth.
CAPTAIN BLACK You can't shoot me... If you do, all of these men will open fire on you and your friends...
Blue and Destiny move to either side of the cab and climb in, Blue getting into the driver side seat. The engine starts up. Scarlet grabs the back door of the truck and swings it open.
CAPTAIN BLACK You know I'm right!
CAPTAIN SCARLET ...Damn.
He pushes Black to the ground and quickly climbs into the truck, pulling the door shot behind him. The truck speeds forwards, heading for the main doors. Machine gun fire and shotgun blasts hit the sides of the armoured vehicle with little effect.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK
CAPTAIN SCARLET Drive!
CAPTAIN BLUE You really think so?
Scarlet flips open a lid on the armour on his left wrist. Set into the lid is a tiny touch screen. Scarlet presses an icon reading 'Open main doors'.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
The main doors begins sliding open. Black gets to his feet and begins running after the truck, slowly catching up to it.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
The truck hurtles out of the doorway and onto the London Skyway - an enormous eight lane bridge stretching over half of London from ground level to the elevated pedestal the citadel stands on. Black catches up to the truck and jumps onto the back, gripping onto the sides to avoid falling off. Face straining with pain and effort, he reaches over the top of the truck and slowly pulls himself up onto the roof.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
DESTINY ANGEL Are they following us?
Scarlet grins.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I don't think so...
EXT. LONDON CITADEL - NIGHT
S.A.T.A.s pour out of the building and run towards the fleet of trucks parked to the side of the citadel. As they clamber inside and start the engines, the vehicles inch forwards at a literal snail's pace. We PAN DOWn to see that all of their tires have been slashed.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE What about Black?
Scarlet opens one of the two back doors. He can no longer see Black running behind them.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Gone. He was on foot anyway... There's no way he can catch us.
CAPTAIN BLUE I don't believe it... your sorry excuse for a plan actually worked!
They all laugh, ecstatic at being free and clear.
CAPTAIN BLUE So, where to?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Well, first we need to get this thing off -
Black drops onto the bonnet of the cab. Destiny screams. Black smashes his legs through the front windshield and drops into the gap between the driver and passenger seats. He grabs Blue, trying to wrestle him away from the wheel. Blue pulls out his gun and fires wildly, his bullets missing Black and hitting the ceiling. Scarlet runs through the truck and grabs Black, pulling him away from Blue and tossing him into a wall. Black kicks him in the knee, and Scarlet staggers backwards. Black then punches him in the face, sending his head smacking against the metal wall. Blue tosses his gun to Destiny.
CAPTAIN BLUE For Christ's sake, shoot him!
Destiny tries aiming at Black as he and Scarlet continue to fight and grapple.
DESTINY ANGEL I can't, I might hit Paul!
Scarlet throws his entire weight into Black, propelling him towards the back of the truck and the open door. Black hits the floor hard, but kicks upwards into Scarlet's stomach. Scarlet flips forwards over Black, landing on his back right near the open doorway. Black jumps to his feet and pushes Scarlet backwards as he tries to get up, knocking him out of the doorway.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
Scarlet grabs hold of the door, dangling from it for dear life. His feet come dangerously close to the ground as the truck speeds forwards, so he begins pulling himself up. Black reaches out to grab him, and Scarlet swings himself to the side to kick him in the face. Scarlet jumps across to the closed door, using rungs on it to climb up onto the roof of the truck. Black edges out of the doorway and climbs up onto the roof as well. Scarlet stands midway across the roof, feet firmly planted as he tries to keep his balance. Black walks forwards uneasily, more sure on his feet and more tenaciously determined. Scarlet pulls out his pistol and tries to aim it forwards, but Black swats it out of his hand and over the side of the bridge. We PAN DOWN and follow it as it falls into the River Thames with a splash.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE What the hell is going on up there?
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
Black and Scarlet continue to grapple, each one trying to knock the other off. Scarlet loses his footing and stumbles. Black takes the opportunity to shove him, knocking him off the roof. Scarlet grabs onto the edge, dangling from the right side of the truck.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE Oh, screw this!
He steers left hard, moving through multiple lanes towards the barrier.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
Black stands over Scarlet, about to jam his foot down on his fingers as the truck quickly drifts to the left.
CAPTAIN BLACK It wouldn't be that easy, Pau-
The truck crashes into the barrier. Black topples off the top and over the barrier, falling down to the river below. The shock of the collision rocks the vehicle, but Scarlet manages to keep holding onto the edge. He pulls himself along the side of the truck inch by inch, eventually managing to climb inside and pull the back door closed.
EXT. RIVER THAMES - NIGHT
Black surfaces from underneath the water, gasping for air. Pure rage fills his eyes as he swims towards shore in the direction of the citadel.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Scarlet sits on a sofa, alone in the room. The only light comes from a small lamp on a coffee table in front of him. He is now dressed in a black t-shirt and trousers. His armour lies in pieces on the floor around him. Scarlet watches a large and deep cut on his arm slowly heal. The skin slowly grows, binding over the wound and stopping the blood from flowing. As layer after layer of skin regrows, Destiny slowly walks into the room.
DESTINY ANGEL Does it hurt?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Yeah. But you get used to it. Learn how to filter it out.
She sits on the sofa next to him tensely.
DESTINY ANGEL I just wanted to say thank you.
CAPTAIN SCARLET For what?
DESTINY ANGEL For breaking us out of the citadel. I know you were risking a lot.
CAPTAIN SCARLET You'd have done the same for me.
Destiny apprehensively nods.
DESTINY ANGEL Look, I, uh... Maybe this is my fault... But when you woke me up tonight... Well, you didn't exactly react like I was expecting.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What were you expecting?
DESTINY ANGEL I don't know, I just... Maybe I just misunderstood where our relationship is at. Maybe I thought there was something there... that isn't.
Scarlet slowly gets to his feet and moves around the room.
CAPTAIN SCARLET No, you didn't misunderstand... But what I've realised is that it would never work.
DESTINY ANGEL Why?
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Sighing) Because I'm never going to die.
DESTINY ANGEL How could you possibly know that?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Black told me on the moon. I'm immortal, and so is he... so are all of them.
DESTINY ANGEL He could have been wro-
CAPTAIN SCARLET Goddammit Juliette, I've spent three years flying through space! If I could die, it would have happened by now. You have no idea what it's like, dying and coming back to life hundreds of times over, feeling every cell in your body freeze, feel rock hard blood in your veins. And all the while, knowing that eventually, you'll just have to carry on doing it over and over while everybody you love dies around you... It's torture, every minute of my life.
Tears are forming in her eyes.
DESTINY ANGEL Well if you're so eager to die, why don't you just stick a knife in a plug socket or shoot yourself with a goddamn electric gun?
CAPTAIN SCARLET How can I do that? How can I do that when I know that the Mysterons are out there, knowing exactly the same things that I do? This war is never going to end, Juliette, and I'm the only one who can carry on fighting them forever. And I can't let myself lose sight of that... This was never anything more than a game. We were flirting, it was a childish romance. We were stupid to treat it like it was anything more.
DESTINY ANGEL So that's what you think, is it?
A long silence falls. Scarlet slowly nods, but his eyes betray an insincerity, a lack of belief in what he is saying. Destiny storms out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
INT. SAFEHOUSE ENTRANCE HALL - NIGHT
Wiping the last of her tears from her eyes, Destiny begins walking towards another room. Blue leans out of a doorway.
CAPTAIN BLUE What happened? Uh, if you don't mind me asking...
DESTINY ANGEL You were right.
CAPTAIN BLUE Right? About what?
DESTINY ANGEL ...I should have forgotten him.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Scarlet sits back down on the sofa. Lying on the coffee table is a copy of the previous days newspaper - the issue featuring the false Spectrum expose. He begins flipping through the pages, angry. He stops on the blurred photo of Winters' alleged assassin - the distorted facial features seem somehow familiar. This familiarity is not lost on Scarlet, who appears to be annoyed trying to work out who the picture is of. He stands up, pulls on a coat and leaves the room.
EXT. SAFEHOUSE - NIGHT
Scarlet quietly leaves the house, loading a clip into his gun and sliding it inside his coat. He pulls the collar of the coat up high to obscure his face somewhat and walks down the street with his head low.
EXT. WORLD CHRONICLE - NIGHT
Scarlet emerges from a shadowy alleyway. The streets are clear - curfew has long begun. Across the street from him is a large office building, the sign above an alcove housing the front doors reading 'The World Chronicle'. Next to the World Chronicle building is a structure currently being redecorated - cans of white spray paint are strewn around the half-painted building. Scarlet steals across the street and walks up the front steps, looking inside for a way in. Headlights appear around the corner of the road and Scarlet quickly presses himself against the wall of the alcove as a S.A.T. truck drives past the building. When it has gone, he begins fiddling with the lock. Eventually, he gives in and kicks it in. The doors swing open, and he walks inside.
INT. WORLD CHRONICLE LOBBY - NIGHT
The lobby is, like most Mysteron interiors, made of metal. It is grand and imposing, with large square pillars casting shadows over the sides of the room. Portraits of President Anderson are engraved into these pillars. Scarlet closes the door behind him and slowly walks straight ahead towards an elevator.
INT. WORLD CHRONICLE EDITORIAL FLOOR - NIGHT
The elevator doors open with a DING, and Scarlet steps out. He is on the editorial floor, the top floor of the building. Rows and rows of desks are arranged eerily neatly. Some are more personalised, but some have the exact same layout in terms of computers and stationary - clearly, some staff are Mysteron replicants and some aren't. Scarlet wanders through the desks until he spots an office at the back of the room, the door labeled 'Daniel Ambrose - Editor in chief'. Scarlet begins walking with renewed purpose towards the door.
INT. AMBROSE'S OFFICE - NIGHT
Scarlet enters the spacious but sparse office slowly and apprehensively. He stands in the middle of the room, looking around. He moves to the desk, and begins looking through the drawers. They are empty. Scarlet walks to a filing cabinet and opens it. Empty. He sits back down at the desk and tries to turn the computer on, but a screen asking for a password appears.
DANIEL AMBROSE (O.S.) What are you doing?
Scarlet looks up, surprised. DANIEL AMBROSE stands in the doorway, smirking like a teacher who has caught a student stealing. He slowly walks into the room, and scarlet stands up.
DANIEL AMBROSE Paul Metcalfe... Captain Scarlet. I heard about your great escape tonight... I didn't expect you to be foolish enough to break into any more buildings considering how much of a priority you currently are to President Anderson.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Thanks for the heads up. You're looking well, Daniel. Last I heard, you were comatose.
DANIEL AMBROSE Evidently, I recovered.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Pity. But you're not THE Daniel Ambrose, are you? You're one of Anderson's Mysteron puppets... I'm guessing you killed the real Ambrose while he was still in his coma?
DANIEL AMBROSE That would be a reasonable assumption.
CAPTAIN SCARLET A reasonable assumption... And now you're Anderson's voice to the public. I've seen those desks... Some of them belong to humans. Some don't. You employ people to write your lies, and if they don't agree, you kill them and replace them with robots you can control, people who'll write senseless propaganda to beat the public into submission.
DANIEL AMBROSE We merely present the public with the facts, Mr. Metcalfe, and -
CAPTAIN SCARLET But you DON'T, do you? I've seen the crap you come up with... I've seen THIS.
He pulls the Spectrum edition of the newspaper from his inside coat pocket and tosses it onto the desk. Ambrose laughs.
DANIEL AMBROSE Yes... It's been a year after we made ourselves known to the public... And co-operation is thinning. We needed something to distract from our own methods... Prove that maybe, we're not so bad. The one thing people hate more than an enemy at the gates is a traitor on the inside, and we provided that. It's a fine piece of work.
CAPTAIN SCARLET It's a piece of something, that's for sure. You've accused friends of mine of murder and treason. I can't let that stand. I can't let people go on thinking that the murderers are the generous benefactors, and the protectors are the murderers. It's just... It's not right.
DANIEL AMBROSE It's not right? Grow up. Your world surrendered to our will... They gave up any right they had to free choice or the truth through their weakness and cowardice. The fact is, we've let those who obey our laws lead normal lives, and you can't handle that. You can't face the truth, that not everyone is as idealistic as you. You stand here in my office and complain, but what are you actually going to do about it? What CAN you do about it?
BLAM. A bullet hits Ambrose in the chest. He staggers backwards, bleeding profusely. He clasps his hand against the wound, his cupped palm immediately being filled with blood. Ambrose slumps against the wall and falls down, leaving a smear of blood. Scarlet slowly lowers his gun, appearing almost surprised with himself. He slides it back inside his coat and quickly walks out of the office.
EXT. WORLD CHRONICLE - NIGHT
Scarlet quickly walks out of the main doors and down the steps, clearly trying to escape in case his actions have drawn attention to the area. However, as he passes the half refurbished building, he stops and looks at the cans of spray paint. He looks back at the World Chronicle building.
EXT. WORLD CHRONICLE - DAY
C.U. CAMERA
A camera flash goes off, obscuring the screen.
C.U. WORLD CHRONICLE STEPS
The steps leading to the main doors of the building are caked in dried blood.
C.U. AMBROSE'S HAND
Ambrose's still, lifeless hand lies covered in dry blood on the top step.
C.U. AMBROSE'S FACE
Ambrose's dead eyes stare out at nothing in particular.
C.U. MAIN DOORS
The main doors of the building are covered in white spray paint, but we are too close in to see the pattern the paint forms.
BACK TO SHOT
Ambrose's corpse lies at the top of the stairs, blood obviously having drained from within it and poured down the steps. The blood has since been dried by the heat of the sun. On the main doors, a symbol is spray painted across the metal and glass - an outline of the Spectrum logo. On the street, people stand around the scene of the crime, taking pictures and talking in hushed, fearful, excited voices.
COLONEL WHITE (V.O.) What were you thinking?
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - DAY
Scarlet, White, Telum and Blue sit at the table. Destiny and Green stand elsewhere within the room.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I... I don't know. I didn't go there to kill him... I was going to see if they actually had the evidence to back this crap up. I mean, look at this -
He holds up the paper to the blurred image of Winters' alleged assassin.
CAPTAIN SCARLET They say this was somebody working for Spectrum? The photo's too blurred to see anything. I was looking to see if there's was a Mysteron faction inside Spectrum organising this... but there wasn't. I couldn't find a sheet of paper, let alone evidence.
COLONEL WHITE You just helped two prisoners escape from the Mysteron stronghold, and you went out again to break into another one of their buildings? You're unbelievable...
CAPTAIN SCARLET Ambrose never woke up from the coma I put him in. The Mysterons killed him in his bed, and were using him to lower animosity towards the Mysterons by lying and faking evidence. I couldn't let him carry on doing it... He challenged me to do something about it. So I did.
COLONEL WHITE So why the public display?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I didn't plan on killing him... but once I did, I realised he could be useful. The only reason these people haven't risen up is because they can't. The Mysterons are better organised, better equipped than any other force on the face of the planet. There's no way anybody could face up to them. But the Mysterons need to know that we won't tolerate their fascism and their deception any more. I used Ambrose's body to send a message.
DESTINY ANGEL
What message?
A beat passes.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We need to tell them that we're going to fight back... We need to tell them that a revolution is coming.
EXT. WORLD CHRONICLE - DAY
Walsh, carrying a briefcase, stands outside the building, observing the scene. He is clearly impressed. A S.A.T. truck pulls around the corner, sirens blaring. The crowd disperses, and Walsh walks quickly down the street, minding his own business.
INT. WALSH'S OFFICE - DAY
Walsh sits at his desk, looking extremely dissatisfied. He slaves away at his keyboard. Dadsworth bursts into the office.
DADSWORTH Walsh! I just got promoted!
WALSH Really?
DADSWORTH Yeah! I'm taking over from Thistleman!
WALSH Uh, what happened to Thistleman?
Dadsworth's face falls slightly. His good mood has been spoiled.
DADSWORTH Well, uh, they found issues of some gossip magazine in his house... with, uh, 'sensitive' material...
His face brightens up again.
DADSWORTH But the good news is, now that he's in prison, I've got his job! I'm your boss!
WALSH Heh. Well, congratulations.
DADSWORTH We'll go out later to celebrate.
WALSH Well, I don't really -
DADSWORTH Oh come on, it'll be great! We'll go to that nightclub where Sally told me she wanted a divorce, it'll be perfect!
WALSH Well, ok, I guess.
DADSWORTH Oh, and Walsh?
WALSH Yeah?
DADSWORTH Try not to be the pain in the arse buzzkill you normally are, ok?
WALSH ...I'll try.
INT. NIGHTCLUB
Blue lights shine over the crowd as they dance - but the music is very quiet. Walsh leans against a wall near the bar, drinking a beer. He looks utterly disinterested. A very drunk Dadsworth emerges from the crowd, staggering over to the bar. He slurs his words as he talks.
DADSWORTH Vodka and coke.
As the barman gets his drink, Dadsworth walks over to Walsh.
DADSWORTH Well you tried pretty bloody hard, didn't you?
WALSH Sorry mate. Got a lot on my mind.
DADSWORTH Ah, s'ok. I know this isn't your thing. It's a wonder those Mysteron pricks still let us come out and have fun like this, isn't it?
As he pours the drink, the barman looks over darkly at Dadsworth.
DADSWORTH Then again, have to be at home by 11. Goddamn curfew. They let us have just enough fun to keep us quiet, but not enough so that they lose control of their fucking police state. Nobody's allowed to use the tube anymore. Music has to be quieter than a pin drop.
Walsh notices the barman looking at them.
WALSH I think you'd better shut up, if you know what I mean?
Dadsworth takes his drink from the barman and hands over money.
DADSWORTH Yeah, you're right mate. Can't be too careful what you say... not with these Nazis in charge.
Walsh looks back nervously at the barman before helping Dadsworth to a table in the lounge. The barman picks up a phone and walks out of sight into a back room.
WALSH Finish your drink. We need to go.
EXT. NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT
Dadsworth stumbles out into the deserted street, followed swiftly by Walsh. He grabs his friend's shoulders pulling him upright.
WALSH Come on, we need to get going!
Sirens blare out. A S.A.T. truck pulls around the corner and parks outside the nightclub. Four agents jump out, approaching Dadsworth.
S.A.T.A. 1 Eric Dadsworth?
DADSWORTH S'me.
S.A.T.A. 1 Your dissenting rants have been causing unrest among the public.
WALSH Wait!
S.A.T.A. 1 You are being transported to the citadel for detention and questioning in accordance with the Anderson Act of 2018.
He quickly removes a billy club from his belt and whacks Dadsworth over the head with it, knocking him to the ground. Two S.A.T.A.s begin dragging him to the back of the truck.
WALSH No!
Walsh tries to run at them, but S.A.T.A. 1 hits him in the face with the club. He topples over, landing on his back.
S.A.T.A. 1 Let that be a lesson to you.
He stands and watches the other agents carry Dadsworth to the prisoner compartment. Walsh continues to lie on the ground, spitting out a broken tooth. Blood fills his mouth.
A dark room lies within, the only light coming from a lamp on a desk belonging to Elder Gentlemen. He is surrounded by dark figures. They talk in hushed voices, their conversation slowly growing louder and louder, until one word becomes audible.
ELDER GENTLEMAN ...Mysterons...
EXT. NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT
Unnoticed by the other agents, Walsh slowly rises to his feet, a look of anger on his face. He spits out blood onto the ground.
WALSH I can't sleep.
All four agents spin around while simultaneously drawing out their billy clubs, Dadsworth's limp form dropping to the floor with a thud. They stand their ground as Walsh slowly approaches them.
WALSH I get the shakes. I have splitting headaches. I have flashbacks. I lie on the ground with my head feeling like it's about to explode, and do you know what I've realised?
Armoured hands tighten around the handles of the clubs.
WALSH It only started when YOU came here.
He runs at S.A.T.A. 1, pouncing on him and pounding him with his fists, his kunckles cracking against the metal armour. S.A.T.A. 1 swings upwards with his club, hitting Walsh in the face again and knocking him off. Walsh tries in vain to stagger to his feet, but immediately all four S.A.T.A.s are upon him, beating him viscously. He falls to the floor, limp.
S.A.T.A. 2 Are we taking him too?
S.A.T.A. 1 No. Let's make an example out of him.
They finish loading Dadsworth into the back, climb inside and drive away. Walsh slowly reaches a hand into the air in desperation before falling unconscious, the arm falling onto his chest.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Anderson paces about the room, fuming. Black stands and watches silently.
ANDERSON How did this happen? How was Paul Metcalfe able to walk in and out of here and then kill one of our most important assets?
CAPTAIN BLACK With respect, master , I -
ANDERSON I've had it with you! I've relied on you the most, and you've let me down again.
CAPTAIN BLACK Paul Metcalfe is a formidable opponent, master. You should know that better than anyone.
Anderson is growing more and more frustrated.
CAPTAIN BLACK It's why you took so many precautions in case he managed to find a way back.
ANDERSON A lot of good that's done... Those soldiers just stood there and let it happen... The Ruby Project isn't working. They have every senior member of their team back now... Spectrum is reforming. And I don't think they'll keep themselves to themselves anymore.
CAPTAIN BLACK I've already appointed a replacement for Ambrose. We can have a clear version of the Winters assassination photo in the Chronicle tomor-
ANDERSON No.
Black is clearly taken aback and angry.
CAPTAIN BLACK No?
ANDERSON No! That's the best weapon we have against any resistance they try to form... We'll wait. Once they build their group up, we'll destroy their morale and knock them down.
CAPTAIN BLACK Do you really think that's going to -
ANDERSON I'm in charge, Captain! Me! Not you! There's a reason I'm in authority! We wait to release the photo, you understand?
Beat.
CAPTAIN BLACK Perfectly.
He walks to the elevator, eying Anderson with fury as he begins to descend.
INT. LONDON TRAIN STATION - DAY
A woman trips over, knocking over another man. A S.A.T.A. walks over and kicks her.
S.A.T.A. Don't do that again!
He then kicks the man twice. Winded, she gets to her feet and offers her hand to help the man up. He looks at her with disgust and stumbles to his feet. Green, hat pulled down low and wearing sunglasses, approaches her, talking to her quietly and handing her a slip of paper.
EXT. LONDON STREET - DAY
A twenty-something man tosses a can of drink towards a bin as he walks past it. It misses and hits the floor, but he doesn't notice. An agent walks up behind him and hits him in the back with the stock of his gun.
S.A.T.A. Pick that up, NOW!
He painfully crawls on his hands and knees towards the can. Sitting outside a cafe across the street, Blue slightly lowers down the copy of the World Chronicle he is using to hide his face. Once the S.A.T.A. has walked around the corner, he gets up and approaches the man.
EXT. ROAD - DAY
A man is driving down a road in his car. A S.A.T. truck speeds past, scraping against the car and damaging it severely as it hurtles down the road. The man slams on the brakes, swearing loudly.
EXT. PETROL STATION - DAY
The damaged car pulls into the petrol station. Destiny, leaning against the wall wearing sunglasses, goes over to the car and knocks on the driver side window.
INT. TUBE PLATFORM
An abandoned underground train platform, the entrance sealed by a locked metal mesh gate. A sign on the mesh reads 'Entry to the tunnels is punishable by death'. A group of around three people approach the gate from one side. Telum appears and removes the lock, the gate swinging open.
TELUM It's this way.
They move through onto the platform. Telum replaces the lock on the gate, making sure nothing appears to be out of place.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
They walk down the dark and abandoned train tunnel until they reach an abandoned train car. Telum opens the carriage door and the three people climb inside. Telum follows, shutting the door behind him.
INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE
The carriage is packed with people sitting on seats and standing up, talking in hushed voices. Many of them bear cuts, bruises, black eyes and other injuries.
COLONEL WHITE May I have your attention?
They all stop talking and turn to face the end of the carriage. White stands, the others sitting near him.
COLONEL WHITE You've all been approached to come here because we suspect you feel as strongly against the Mysterons as we do. You've been beaten, had your bones broken. You've had friends and family killed, or hauled off to prison. Their rule is a dictatorship, and isn't worth whatever natural resources they promised in exchange for obedience. You have all endured a hard year of fear and tension. So, we're inviting you to help take part in something big. The Mysterons are strong and resourceful, but they're not infallible. Nobody is.
Murmurs begin.
COLONEL WHITE
Clearly, what I am proposing is dangerous. If you join our resistance, you will be putting your lives at risk... So it's only fair that I'm honest with you. My name is Charles Gray, formerly Captain White of Spectrum.
The murmurs become more frenzied.
COLONEL WHITE Please... Don't believe what you've heard in the newspapers. You all know better than most that the World Chronicle is pure Mysteron propaganda. Not one word in that article is true. Spectrum was dedicated to combating terrorism and war on a global scale. We'd been fighting the Mysterons in secret for years... But they started getting to politicians. Soon, we were all captured or killed, and then nobody was there to stop the Mysterons from taking over. They even destroyed our attack teams and turned them into their own personal army... The Mysterons have prison towers built all over the world, but the largest and most important is here in London. Our aim is to assault the London citadel, get inside and assassinate the Mysteron replicant of President Anderson. This is not a task we will be able to achieve overnight. Those of you who decide to join us will need to be trained in weapons, explosives... staying alive. we'll need to weaken the Mysterons by attacking smaller bases and strongholds across the country. It will take months, years even. But think of yourselves. Think of those you know who have been battered and killed by the Mysterons. They've taken our world from us through death and destruction, and we need to take it back. So, with that in mind... I implore you all to join us in rebuilding Spectrum and fighting these bastards.
EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
A S.A.T. truck trundles down the road. We PAN down to a grassy bank, behind which lie Blue and around ten fighters, armed with pistols and machine guns with attached batteries. As the truck moves near them, they run out onto the road, Blue firing his weapon into the air as a warning. As the driver jumps out of the cab, he is shot by several guns. The passenger drops out of his seat and leans around the cab, successfully shooting and wounding a fighter. He stumbles back, gasping in pain as his leg bleeds profusely. Blue swings his gun up and fires at the S.A.T.A., who convulses as the bullets conduct electricity around his body.
INT. S.A.T. TRUCK - NIGHT
The back doors swing open, Blue appearing in the open doorway. In front of him lie boxes and boxes of weapons, explosives and ammunition.
CAPTAIN BLUE We've got what we came for.
He turns to the wounded fighter, who has limped to the doorway with the others.
CAPTAIN BLUE How's the leg?
FIGHTER I'll live.
CAPTAIN BLUE Good.
EXT. LONDON STREET - NIGHT
A woman with a shawl covering her heard pushes a pram down the deserted street. A S.A.T.A. walks around the corner and spots her, drawing out his billy club.
S.A.T.A. Curfew started two hours ago!
He walks towards her quickly.
WOMAN No, please, I -
S.A.T.A. No excuses!
A dozen men and women with cricket and baseball bats run out of alcoves and alleyways, rushing the agent and beating him till he falls over, writhing on the ground and trying to lash out. The woman takes off her shawl, revealing herself to be Destiny. She pulls a pistol out of the pram and aims it at him.
DESTINY ANGEL Didn't you ever get taught not to hit a woman?
She pulls the trigger. BLAM.
EXT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
Scarlet, Blue and twenty other fighters press themselves against a large, partially destroyed stone wall.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Whispering) Ready?
The others nod.He spins around the corner. We see a large warehouse, guarded by several agents outside. Scarlet begins to open fire, and Blue and the other fighters run out from behind the wall. Scarlet runs towards the building, bullets whizzing past in both directions. S.A.T.A.s and fighters alike are felled by machine gun fire. Reaching the large metal door of the warehouse, Scarlet clips a magnetic bomb to the heavy iron. In slow motion, he turns around and begins running away from the building. The bomb detonates, blowing the door apart. The explosion kills the remaining agents and sends shrapnel flying out in all directions. One piece stabs Scarlet in the back, running through him and implanting itself in the ground. Blood spurts as Scarlet is suspended above the ground by the sharp metal.
CAPTAIN BLUE Yeesh.
Blue jogs over and crouches down, pushing Scarlet's body up from underneath. Squelching sounds accompany the corpse being pushed off the shrapnel and onto the ground. The skin begins rebinding itself, and light returns to Scarlet's eyes.
CAPTAIN BLUE One of these days you're going to meet something that actually CAN kill you, and then you'll be sorry.
INT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
Inside the warehouse lies an enormous stockpile of barrels of fuel and oil. Scarlet and Blue rig plastic explosives on the barrels while their remaining allies fight the agents guarding the inside.
CAPTAIN BLUE I'm done here, how about you?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Just a second.
He sets the timer - thirty seconds. He presses the 'Start' button.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Time to go!
EXT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
The surviving members of the group run out of the building as fast as they can, running back behind the wall for cover. In slow motion, the warehouse explodes spectacularly, the ignited oil sending an enormous fireball into the sky.
EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
The truck with both of it's dead agents has had a Spectrum logo spraypainted onto it.
EXT. LONDON STREET - NIGHT
The S.A.T.A. lies in the middle of the road in a pool of blood, a Spectrum logo tattooed on his chest.
EXT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
From an aerial view, we see that oil has been used to set a field next to the warehouse alight in the shape of the Spectrum logo.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - DAY
Anderson sits at his throne, watching video feeds of various vandalism and destruction on his bank of computers and screens. His fingers tighten around the arms of the chair. he speaks out, as if to nobody.
ANDERSON Captain Black... Please report to my chamber.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
Dozens of fighters sit on the floor with machine guns, affixing battery packs to them. Telum is stood up, demonstrating how to do so.
TELUM The Mysterons have a natural weakness to electricity. Even a small amount will kill them instantly. In fact, an electrically-induced injury or fatality is the only thing they can't recover from. So, the wires leading into the firing mechanism give each bullet fired an electric charge.
White walks past, talking to Scarlet and Green.
COLONEL WHITE
That's the sixth cache of weapons we've stolen. We get so many new members that we keep running out of guns.
CAPTAIN SCARLET When's the next meeting?
COLONEL WHITE Next week.
Blue runs over, holding a newspaper.
CAPTAIN BLUE You really need to see this.
Scarlet takes the newspaper from him, his face turning white.
CAPTAIN SCARLET But... I killed Ambrose...
CAPTAIN BLUE This just came out today. They got a new editor.
COLONEL WHITE What's wrong?
Scarlet nervously begins reading from the newspaper.
CAPTAIN SCARLET In our expose of Spectrum, we featured a photograph of former President Edgar Winters' assassin. However, the picture was too distorted to determine the identity of the killer. Through months of hard work, we have cleared up the image to reveal that the man responsible for killing the former President is...
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
There are now around three hundred people, too many to fit into a train carriage. They stand in a large intersection of the tunnel, with White and Scarlet stand at the front, a projector displaying a grim image on the wall - a photograph of what appears to be Scarlet standing on a rooftop in dark clothing, holding a smoking sniper rifle in one hand and pulling a mask off his head with the other. There is unease and tension amongst the group.
COLONEL WHITE I realise that we've broken protocol and organised a meeting out of schedule, but this is an emergency. By now, all of you will have read the article accusing Paul Metcalfe, Captain Scarlet, of being the man who assassinated President Winters and allowed Anderson to come to power.
FIGHTER 1 The picture shows him doing it! It was that bastard right there!
Several people roar in anger.
COLONEL WHITE Calm yourselves, please! This picture is clearly a forgery!
FIGHTER 2 No way. I used to be a graphic designer, and that photo hasn't been edited at all.
More roars, from more people this time.
COLONEL WHITE Why would you believe the Mysterons? What reason have they given you to trust them? What reason has Captain Scarlet given you over the past six months we've been working together to doubt him?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Winters was murdered in 2018. It couldn't have been me... I was in deep space.
FIGHTER 1 Are you serious? You want us to believe that?
CAPTAIN SCARLET It's true! In 2016, we went to the moon to destroy a Mysteron base. Captain Black, who I'm sure you all know by reputation, stowed away on our ship and blasted me into space in an escape pod. I spent three years floating towards earth to try and do some good, not for people I've helped to believe lies like this!
FIGHTER 3 Three years? In space? How can you justify making this shit up?
FIGHTER 2 Yeah! And why is it that no matter how many missions you go on, you never seem to get hurt?
CAPTAIN SCARLET That's... I can't tell you that...
FIGHTER 1 None of those Mysterons ever get hurt either!
CAPTAIN SCARLET Ok, fine! I'll tell you the truth. I was part of the first attempt to kill Winters, when Heathrow and the Car-Vu were destroyed. I was a bodyguard on my way to pick Winters up, but the Mysterons tried to kill and replicate me. I took Winters to the roof of the Car-Vu... and got blown off. When I woke up, I was back to my normal self... with the ability to heal from any wound. I have a Mysteron body... but if I thought for one second that they had any control over my mind, I'd make sure I got far, far away from here. I'm not working for them anymore, and I want to take them down just as much as you all do... maybe more.
The dissenting faction of the group murmur. They appear to be relatively appeased.
COLONEL WHITE Paul Metcalfe has risked his life for you all enough to not have to justify himself like that... The problem is that I'm afraid this is as big as we're going to get. We've received word of Spectrum chapters being set up in Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast... But we can't expect to gain any new supporters now. Not after this article.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
Sometime later, most people have left for the night. Scarlet and White stand talking.
COLONEL WHITE I'm sorry, Paul. They've crossed the line this time.
CAPTAIN SCARLET This might have put new people off fighting, but we still have hundreds of members in each of those cities. It's not...
COLONEL WHITE Not what?
Scarlet smiles sheepishly.
CAPTAIN SCARLET It's not the end of the world.
They laugh. Walsh approaches the pair.
COLONEL WHITE What can we do for you?
WALSH Hi. Uh, my name's Walsh... Christopher Walsh. I joined a couple of meetings ago... I think I have information you might find helpful.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Walsh, Scarlet, Destiny and White sit on the two sofas while Blue, Green and Telum stand.
COLONEL WHITE So you think these dreams are a memory from your past? That this man knew about the Mysterons?
WALSH He's my father. Yeah, I know that this happened... It's too real. But all I can remember him saying is the word 'Mysterons' with his cabinet around him... Then I just feel like I'm being electrified, and I wake up.
CAPTAIN SCARLET His cabinet?
CAPTAIN BLUE Who was your dad?
WALSH Jonathan Walsh.
CAPTAIN SCARLET THE Jonathan Walsh?
CAPTAIN BLUE Who's Jonathan Walsh?
Scarlet looks at him in an exasperated fashion.
COLONEL WHITE He was prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1977 to 1982.
CAPTAIN BLUE Your dad was the prime minister?
WALSH Mmhmm. Meant he never had a lot of time for me...
COLONEL WHITE If your father was a world leader with knowledge of the Mysterons in the 80s, that means this isn't the first time they've been here.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Can you remember anything else?
WALSH ....No. If I try, I black out.
TELUM Wait. You say you feel as if you're being electrified?
WALSH Yeah.
LIEUTENANT GREEN What does that signify?
TELUM If he stumbled in on something he shouldn't have seen, it's possible that he was put through electro-shock therapy to make him forget his memories up to that point.
DESTINY ANGEL Electro-shock therapy on a four year old? Come on.
TELUM If what he heard could have put national security at risk, then I don't see why the government wouldn't risk it.
WALSH You think my dad wiped my memory?
TELUM Well, you say you were four. Can you remember anything before that?
WALSH I, uh... Uh... No. No, my earliest memory up until these flashbacks started was talking to my dad about what I wanted to be when I grew up... I said I wanted to be a banker.
TELUM Well, if this is something you witnessed, and you only started flashing back 18 months ago, it's likely that the Mysterons arriving triggered some memory beneath the surface.
COLONEL WHITE Is there a way we can get him to remember more?
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
Walsh sits at the kitchen table, his head locked into a crude metal frame. An array of cobbled-together machinery sits under the table. Walsh sits at the table while Telum affixes a tiny plunger-like instrument attached to the equipment to his head. The other stand around the kitchen, watching.
TELUM It's called deep-brain stimulation. We send targeted electric shocks to your brain to stimulate the dormant memory cells.
WALSH Is it dangerous?
TELUM Well... Yeah. Very.
COLONEL WHITE If your father made contact with the Mysterons in the past, the information you overheard could be instrumental to us defeating them.
WALSH ...Ok. I'll do it.
Telum sits at the table next to Walsh and reaches down to a button.
TELUM Ready?
Walsh nods. Telum presses the button. Walsh blinks.
WALSH (V.O.) I... I can see the door...
White light obscures our view.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
Walsh opens his eyes.
TELUM What happened?
COLONEL WHITE What did you see?
WALSH Nothing. I... It stopped working.
TELUM Ok... I'll increase the voltage.
He turns a dial on the machinery up slightly and presses the button again.
A dark room lies within, the only light coming from a lamp on a desk belonging to Elder Gentlemen, who we now know as JONATHAN WALSH.He is surrounded by dark figures. They talk in hushed voices, their conversation slowly growing louder and louder.
JONATHAN WALSH ...Contact... Mysterons... Ruby Project... Canary Wharf...
White light obscures our view once again.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
Walsh begins convulsing, his eyes rolling up into his head. Telum quickly rips the apparatus from his head and injects with with a syringe of medicine. Walsh falls to the floor, the convulsing dying down.
WALSH (Whispering) ...Contact... Mysterons... Ruby Project... Canary Wharf...
The group look stunned.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
As before, Walsh, Destiny, Scarlet and White sit on the sofas while the others stand. Walsh has a blanket draped over him, and holds a a cup of coffee with shaking hands.
WALSH I could still only hear bits and pieces... Those were the only words that got through.
TELUM Well obviously, it's too dangerous to try again. We can't risk it if you reacted that way to the stress of the memory.
LIEUTENANT GREEN I've heard of the Ruby Project before...
CAPTAIN BLUE It's a charity. They fund research into livestock cloning. They've got a bunch of celebrities endorsing it.
DESTINY ANGEL Like who?
CAPTAIN BLUE Uh, that boxer Johnny Hatton... A few musicians... and...
His face falls.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What? What is it?
CAPTAIN BLUE Well, their chief patron was... Robert Anderson. He put up the money for them to be founded in the first place.
TELUM When were they founded?
CAPTAIN BLUE ...2016.
DESTINY ANGEL After he was killed and replicated...
WALSH Then why do I remember that name being used in 1981?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I don't know... But I have a feeling we'll find an answer at Canary Wharf.
CAPTAIN BLUE What's Canary Wharf?
Scarlet shoots him another withering look.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Americans... It's the business centre of London. All the big banks have office towers there.
WALSH I work there.
COLONEL WHITE You do? For which bank?
WALSH The World Bank of Business and Commerce... It's the biggest bank in the world. They have two buildings on either side of the street. The UK government used to have a fifty one percent stake in it, it's how I got my first job there.
CAPTAIN SCARLET It was important enough for Jonathan Walsh to mention while talking about the Mysterons and the Ruby Project... If there are details or a transcript of the meeting Christopher saw, I have a feeling we'll find it at Canary Wharf.
COLONEL WHITE If the government had such a large stake in that bank, it's possible they used it as a front to hide sensitive information like this. The WBBC is the best place to start looking.
CAPTAIN BLUE Oh, I wonder who's job that'll be...

INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 1 - NIGHT
Scarlet stalks through rows and rows of filing cabinets on a floor high above the ground, his torch cutting a beam of light through the darkness. He touches an microphone attached to his ear.
CAPTAIN SCARLET How are you doing?
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) Nothing yet.
Scarlet looks through the glass walls at the skyscraper on the other side of the street. On the equivalent floor, a tiny spot of light can be seen moving around in the darkness.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Ok. Keep checking any likely categories. I'll tell you if I find anything.
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) Hold the phone...
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 2 - NIGHT
Blue is standing over an open file cabinet marked 'Projects' and rifling through. He pulls out a file marked 'Ruby Project'.
CAPTAIN BLUE Got it!
He opens the file. Inside are pages and pages of... giberish. Words made out of seemingly random collections of letters with no pictures.
CAPTAIN BLUE Oh.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (O.S.) What is it?
CAPTAIN BLUE It's written in code using a cipher or something... We'll have to take it back so Telum can translate it.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 1 - NIGHT
CAPTAIN SCARLET Ok. Let's get out of here and head back through the tunnels.
A distant WHIRRING is heard. Scarlet tilts his head slightly, listening as it gradually becomes louder.
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) Can you hear that?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Yeah...
Pulling a pistol out of his jacket, he slowly moves towards the window. The noise becomes louder still. Scarlet turns off his torch, the only light in the room vanishing and plunging him into total darkness. Amber streetlight is seen outside the glass walls, but it barely seeps in. The whirring is coming from overhead now, but nothing can be seen.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Whispering) Can you see anything?
CAPTAIN BLACK (O.S.) (Whispering) No...
Scarlet narrows his eyes. The noise begins to quieten, as if moving to the other side of the street. Scarlet looks through the window and sees a patrol helicopter passing over the street, apparently having seen nothing.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Whispering) Ok, it's gone. We'll slip out through the -
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) SHIT, LOOK OUT!
Scarlet turns and runs away from the window, sliding and rolling sideways into cover behind a filing cabinet. The windows SMASH as twenty STEALTH S.A.T.A.s fastrope into the building, rolling on the floor to absorb the shock of the fall. Their armour is sleeker and less bulky, and they carry silenced sub-machine guns. Their visors are green instead of red. The leader of the squad, the STEALTH COMMANDER, is the first to stand up.
SHOT - STEALTH COMMANDER'S POV
The night-vision visor lights up the room in a green tint, clearly outlining the shapes of the filing cabinets and other furniture.
BACK TO SHOT
STEALTH COMMANDER They're in here somewhere. Move out!
EXT. WBBC TOWER 2 ROOF - NIGHT
The helicopter hovers over the roof of the second tower as twenty more S.A.T.A.s jump out, running to the lip of the roof and attaching their harnesses to the ledge. They all leap backwards off the roof, fast roping down to the archives floor.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 1 - NIGHT
Scarlet peeks around a corner, watching for any sign of his enemies. The amber light from outside cast dimly on his face is the only way we see him. He looks to the right and notices a full-length metal locker. He scurries past rows of cabinets, making sure any nearby S.A.T.A.s have their backs to him, and opens the locker door, sneaking inside before closing it again.
INT. LOCKER
Light refracts through three slits in the door of the locker onto Scarlet's face. His heavy breath becomes slower as he calms down in his hiding place.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 2 - NIGHT
The stealth S.A.T.A.s (S.S.A.T.A.s) smash through the windows, landing in a roll in an identical fashion to their counterparts in the other tower. They stand up and move out, walking quietly through the cabinets.
SHOT - S.S.A.T.A. 1's POV
S.S.A.T.A. 1 walks swiftly and stealthily, turning multiple corners. As he turns one corner, he spots Blue ducking behind a cbinet and fires, the bullets hitting the metal.
BACK TO SHOT
S.S.A.T.A. 1 I've got one! He's over here!
All of the other agents begin converging on Blue's location. He gets up and runs, firing behind him with his pistol, the other hand gripping onto the file. He runs at a cabinet at the end of the row, leaping into it with his full weight and knocking it over onto its side. He rolls over the top of it and crouches to press his back to it, using it as cover as bullet start flying.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 1 - NIGHT
STEALTH COMMANDER We've got them! We're crossing over, let's go!
The agents start running back to the smashed windows. The Stealth Commander is first. As he nears the edge, he jumps forwards onto the ground ahead of him. As his feet make contact, the soles of his shoes give out a brief burst of green energy, and he is boosted forwards at a breakneck speed, his technologically-aided leap propelling him across the street.
INT. LOCKER Scarlet watches this through the slits in the locker.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What the...
EXT. WBBC TOWERS - NIGHT
Stealth Commander cuts through the air like a torpedo, arcing upwards and then down over the street.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 2 - NIGHT
He lands through the empty frame of a previously smashed window, rolling to absorb the shock and immediately standing up straight. Stealth Commander begins firing at the toppled file cabinet, which many agents are already doing.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 1 - NIGHT
More and more agents run through the rows of cabinets towards the windows, where their primary jump activates a similar brief bust of green energy.
EXT. WBBC TOWERS - NIGHT
Two, five, ten agents fly across the street.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 2 - NIGHT
Bullets whizz overhead, hitting file cabinets, the floor, and smashing through nearby windows. Blue grimaces as he tries to keep his head down.
CAPTAIN BLUE I'm pinned down! I need help!
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 1 - NIGHT
The last S.S.A.T.A. runs across the archives floor. As he nears the locker, the door swings open and he runs headlong into it, his helmet smashing against the metal and his visor shattering. He falls backwards onto his back, unconscious. Scarlet steps out of the locker.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I'm on my way.
Kicking his own trainers off, Scarlet pulls the boots off the feet of the agent and puts them on. He picks up the sub-machine gun the S.S.A.T.A. dropped, turns towards the window and starts walking. The walk turns into a jog, the jog turns into a run. He begins sprinting, and takes a jump. In slow motion, the helicopter descends between the two towers. As Scarlet lands from his jump and his knees begin to bend again, his face becomes surprised and shocked. In this slow motion, we see the energy burst more clearly. A faint green light emanates from the soles of the boots, that slowly becomes stronger and stronger as Scarlet's knees become more and more bent. The burst flings him forward, and he grips onto his gun for dear life.
EXT. WBBC TOWERS - NIGHT
Continuing in slow motion, the helicopter propeller blades cut through the air as they rotate. Scarlet sails through the air, heading straight for the helicopter blades. His eyes close as he braces himself for extreme pain. The helicopter suddenly begins descending. As Scarlet reaches the top of his jump arc, his body becomes parallel with the ground as he hovers in mid-air for a split second, the blades centimetres away from him. The barrel of his SMG, pointing downwards, dips below the blades. The silencer is ripped off the end of the barrel and sent shooting off into the sky. Scarlet begins falling towards the open window, and we come out of slow motion.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 2 - NIGHT
Scarlet lands inside the building with a roll and stands up. The stealth agent closest to him turns to look at him, and Scarlet blasts him away with the machine gun. As other S.A.T.A.s turn to look at him, he picks up the machine gun of the recently felled agent and tosses it across the room to behind Blue's cover before starting to shoot at other enemies. Blue rises up from behind cover and begins firing bursts before ducking down behind the cabinet again, repeating the process periodically. More and more bodies hit the floor along with a flood of empty bullet casings. CLICK. Scarlet's gun runs out. Ten agents are left, and have taken cover behind a cabinet each, dotted down the row leading to Blue periodically. He tosses it at the face of the one nearest to him, knocking him backwards, before starting to run towards Blue's cover in slow motion. Bullets fly from left and right as the agents taking cover shoot at him, but they either miss or merely graze Scarlet. He drops down, sliding the last few feet to the felled cabinet, and grabs a discarded SMG as he skids. He continues moving forward as he straightens up and vaults over the cabinet, falling into cover beside Blue.
CAPTAIN BLUE How the hell did you get here so fast?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Never mind. I count about ten agents left.
A S.S.A.T.A. runs at the cabinet firing his gun wildly. Scarlet and Blue duck down even more, and Scarlet blindfires over the top of their cover. Bullets smash against the agent, and his lifeless body stumbles over the cabinet and lands on the floor in front of them.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We need to get out of here before they heal and we have to do this all over again. You take this guy's harness and fast rope down the building to the streets so you can find a car. I'll draw the others out and buy you time.
CAPTAIN BLUE Better you than me.
Blue crawls away, sneaking through the file cabinets in a wide arc around the combat-heavy area. Scarlet stands up, takes a few steps back and runs forwards, sticking one foot out to use the cabinet as a jumping block. As he falls from his jump, he kicks out against an upright cabinet. A burst of energy is released from the boots, and he rockets sideways into another cabinet, hitting it so hard it flies backwards with him and smashes into two S.S.A.T.A.s. In the background, Blue attaches his harness to a rope and jumps backwards out of a smashed window.
Scarlet gets to his feet, firing wildly. One agent goes down, two, three. A bullet hits him in the arm, so he drops the SMG and pulls out his pistol with his good hand while wincing in pain. Scarlet shoots his attacker, then another agent, then another. Flexing his now healed arm, Scarlet runs at the last two S.S.A.T.A.s, who are standing close together. He jumps as he runs, lifting his legs high up and kicking each agent in the face. Energy bursts from each boot, and they are each sent flying backwards out of the building.
EXT. WBBC TOWERS - NIGHT
Blue ropes down the building, carrying the file in one hand. The two agents fly out of the window stories above him and fall down towards the ground.
CAPTAIN BLUE Yeesh.
INT. WBBC ARCHIVES FLOOR 2 - NIGHT
Scarlet lands on his back with a thud. He stands up quickly, picking up an SMG and whatever spare clips of ammunition are lying around, tucking them into his coat pockets. He begins sprinting towards the window.
EXT. CANARY WHARF STREET - NIGHT
Blue reaches the ground and disconnects himself from the harness. A parked blue sports car sits at the side of the road. Pulling out his pistol, Blue shoots out the windows, setting off the alarm. Scarlet lands behind him, blood spurting out and the CRACK of bones shattering echoing through the street. Blue jumps in fright.
CAPTAIN BLUE Holy shit! Paul! Paul! Are you alright?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Ughhhhhhhhh...
CAPTAIN BLUE Brilliant...
Blue drags Scarlet to the car and opens the door, lifting him into the passenger seat with some difficulty. He then runs round and gets into the driver seat.
INT. SPORTS CAR - NIGHT
Blue reaches down to begin hotwiring the car.
CAPTAIN BLUE The last time I stole one of these, it was a lot easier.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Uhhhhhhhh....
Blue looks over at Scarlet. His face is bloody and mangled, but is slowly reforming itself. Blue winces.
CAPTAIN BLUE Let's get out of here before lunch makes a reappearance.
He slams his foot down on the accelerator pedal. The car roars to life and speeds down the road, turning a corner sharply.
EXT. LONDON STREETS - NIGHT
The helicopter follows the car, a spotlight continuously trying to lock on the speeding vehicle.
INT. SPORTS CAR - NIGHT
Blue glances in the mirror. Three S.A.T. trucks are in pursuit as well as the helicopter. Scarlet opens his eyes slowly, becoming aware of the situation around him.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What's going on?
CAPTAIN BLUE Can't talk, busy!
EXT. LONDON STREETS - NIGHT
A roadblock of two trucks surrounded by agents is set up at a crossroads ahead, blocking the road directly ahead. The car handbrake turns and swerves to the left, driving down the left street. The agents fire after the car as it speeds away. The first truck does not brake in time, instead slamming into the roadblock and crushing several men. The next two trucks turn and continue chasing Blue and Scarlet. The helicopter also overshoots the turning, carrying on straight down the road.
INT. SPORTS CAR - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE Are you up to using that?
He nods briefly in the direction of Scarlet's sub-machine gun, still gripped tightly in his death grip without realising.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Yeah.
CAPTAIN BLUE Then what the hell are you waiting for?
Scarlet opens the passenger door and leans out, toting his gun.
EXT. LONDON STREETS - NIGHT
Scarlet leans out, firing at the tires of the nearest truck. They burst, and the truck begins spinning out of control.
INT. SPORTS CAR - NIGHT
Scarlet leans back inside to load a new clip into the gun, and leans back out again.
EXT. LONDON STREETS - NIGHT
Scarlet leans out, and the damaged truck speeds past, scarping against his side of the car. Scarlet ducks back inside momentarily to avoid his head being ripped from his body by the out of control truck, which smashes the passenger door off its hinges. The truck turns sharply and flips over onto its side, sliding through the front wall of a building. The car smashes through a wooden barrier leading onto a bridge, the last truck following closely behind.
INT. SPORTS CAR - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE Close shave, huh?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Look out!
EXT. BRIDGE - NIGHT
The last truck is neck and neck with the sports car, driving on the passenger's side. It begins moving sideways, ramming into the car again and again.
INT. SPORTS CAR - NIGHT
The car shakes violently as Blue tries to continue driving.
CAPTAIN BLUE Shoot them! Do it!
Scarlet looks up through the hole where a door used to be, the S.A.T.A. driving the truck visible through the side window of the cab. Scarlet aims at the tires and pulls the trigger. CLICK.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Crap, it's jammed!
CAPTAIN BLUE Out of the way!
Scarlet looks to the side and sees Blue is wielding his pistol. He presses himself as flat against his seat as he can to get out of Blue's line of fire. Blue pops off a few shots that hit the armour of the cab before shooting a bullet through the window and into the head of the driver.
EXT. BRIDGE - NIGHT
The truck speeds let diagonally, smashing through the concrete barrier and toppling into the Thames. The car drives onwards.
EXT. CARPARK - NIGHT
In an abandoned carpark, Scarlet rolls a molotov cocktail underneath the sports car. He and Blue run away into the night as the car explodes.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Scarlet, Blue, White, Green and Destiny sit nervously in the living room. Telum walks in holding reams of paper. He is tired and pale, and his gaze is vacant. Walsh has left.
COLONEL WHITE Have you finished decoding the file?
He does not reply, instead staring at the documents in his hands.
COLONEL WHITE Telum?
TELUM I've... I've finished...
CAPTAIN SCARLET What is it?
TELUM It's a... a diary entry...
He is obviously in shock. Blue gently pulls the papers from Telum's hands - he does not resist. Blue begins reading out loud.
CAPTAIN BLUE The following is a typed replica of certain entires from Prime Minister Jonathan Walsh's private hand-written diary... The original work has since been destroyed. This information is highly sensitive and may pose a threat to global security... and must be stored accordingly. Entry dated November 2nd, 1981... "The unthinkable has happened... Our fears finally confirmed..."
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) In my state of shock, it is near-impossible to think of the words to describe the events of today...
FADE TO:
INT. JONATHAN WALSH'S OFFICE - DAY
FLASHBACK - Jonathan Walsh's lavish Prime Ministerial office. His desk is piled high with papers, and a grey box of a computer sits at the side of it, green text on a black screen. A stressed Jonathan is writing a speech, reading it aloud.
JONATHAN WALSH ...and so we extend an open invitation to...
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) So I shall resolve to do my best.
The telephone rings.
JONATHAN WALSH Walsh.
There is silence.
JONATHAN WALSH Hello?
Silence again. Jonathan hangs up and continues writing. The phone rings again. He picks it up.
JONATHAN WALSH Who is this?
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Jonathan Walsh?
JONATHAN WALSH ...Yes?
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Prime Minister Jonathan Walsh?
JONATHAN WALSH That's correct. Who are you?
MYSTERONS (O.S.) How best to describe it... We are not of your world, Jonathan Walsh.
JONATHAN WALSH What do you mean? Who's we?
MYSTERONS (O.S.) We will try to make it clearer. Please, do not be alarmed.
The computer suddenly explodes, the screen shattering and sparking wires crackling with electricity. Jonathan jumps back in his seat and slams his fist down on a button on the desk. Immediately, the windows are covered in sheet metal.
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) I feared an assassination attempt, an attack from a disgruntled would-be martyr angry with my government.
JONATHAN WALSH You think you can get to me that easily?
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Jonathan Walsh, please, we mean you no harm... Look...
Two green rings of light appear on the computer, passing over it as if scanning it.
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Look down.
JONATHAN WALSH What?
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Please look down, Jonathan Walsh.
Jonathan's eyes lower, and he gasps. Sitting underneath his desk is a brand new computer, identical to the one that was destroyed.
JONATHAN WALSH How did you... what did you...
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Please listen carefully, Jonathan Walsh. This is the voice of the Mysterons. We are an alien race invisible to the naked eye... for we do not physically exist. Our ancient Martian ancestors created us, a race of computer programs designed to help and aid them. When they were rendered extinct by disease, we remained on...
The computer screen blinks to life, displaying the text 'Hello, Jonathan Walsh.' Jonathan gasps.
MYSTERONS (O.S.) Mars is an empty planet, Jonathan Walsh, with little information to absorb and learn. We have been watching your earth-men for years... You are a fascinating species. But your planet is dying. War is tearing you apart, and your natural resources are running low. However, we can offer a solution...
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) And then, the voice moved from the telephone to all around me, as if these... Mysterons were in the room with me.
MYSTERONS We can replicate any object, animal or person.
Jonathan looks around for the new source of the voice.
MYSTERONS If you allow us to cohabitate your planet peacefully, we can provide you with all the resources you will ever need. Your planet will thrive once again.
JONATHAN WALSH I... I, uh...
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) This was not something I could digest on my own. I had just learned of life beyond our own planet, and I was already being presented with a peace offering. This was too big a decision for one man.
INT. JONATHAN WALSH'S OFFICE - NIGHT
FLASHBACK - Jonathan sits at his desk. Members of his Cabinet sit in chairs and stand. They talk in low, hushed voices. A tape recorder sits on the table.
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) So I called upon the Ministers of the Cabinet.
CABINET MINISTER 1 Are you sure it's not a hoax? A practical joke?
CABINET MINISTER 2 Are you stupid? You heard the recording. This is bigger... much bigger.
JONATHAN WALSH It's not a joke. They created a computer out of thin air...
CABINET MINISTER 3 Should we accept the offer?
CABINET MINISTER 2 Of course we should! This is the opportunity of a lifetime. If they have that kind of technology, think of what we can use it for! No more years of wasting away in the shadow of America.
JONATHAN WALSH We're waist deep in the Cold War. If the Russians find out we're allying ourselves with alien races, they'd launch their nuclear missiles without a seconds hesitation...
CABINET MINISTER 1 That's true.
Unnoticed by them, the office door is pushed open by a tiny fraction. Young Walsh's face appears.
CABINET MINISTER 3 If we're rejecting their offer, then we need to cover this up. Have you written any documents relating to this incident, Jonathan?
JONATHAN WALSH Yes... I'll give them to you tomorrow for coding and destruction. I'll wait for the Mysterons to make contact and tell them our stance. What will the file be codenamed?
CABINET MINISTER 2 I believe the Ruby Project has yet to be used.
JONATHAN WALSH Ruby Project. Ok, once all the records are coded, store them at Canary Wharf.
He looks up and sees his son's face.
JONATHAN WALSH (V.O.) Christopher had heard it all. The Mysterons, the Ruby Project, Canary Wharf. Though he might not understand it at four years old, he would most surely remember the strange happenings that night and realise what had transpired when he was older. Something would have to be done to make him forget...
INT. JONATHAN WALSH'S OFFICE - DAY
FLASHBACK - Walsh sits at his desk, looking exhausted.
MYSTERONS And you're sure this is how you wish to proceed?
JONATHAN WALSH Yes. We appreciate your offer, we really do, but the time just isn't right. I don't know if it will ever be right.
MYSTERONS We respect your decision and return amicably to Mars. But be warned, Jonathan Walsh. If this is a ruse to lull us into a false sense of security and allow you to eradicate whatever threat you believe we pose, then it will be your last act as Prime Minister. We will return and unleash our full wrath upon your planet if we are attacked, and we will do it swiftly.
JONATHAN WALSH ...Mutually assured destruction.
MYSTERONS We believe you are familiar with the concept. Goodbye, Jonathan Walsh.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Blue stops reading and puts the paper down. There is silence. Every person in the room has an extremely grave look on their faces.
COLONEL WHITE They came here peacefully... They offered us help...
LIEUTENANT GREEN Spectrum was formed two years later. Walsh must have initiated it out of fear... Telling other governments providing funding that we were a counter-terrorist unit, but knowing that if the Mysterons ever returned... we'd be the ones to fight them.
CAPTAIN BLUE A generation of lies and deceit... (Shrugs) What's new?
CAPTAIN SCARLET The Cold War never really ended... We were locked in another one before it did. When Black blew up the Mysteron base on - crap. Oh crap. The base. On the moon, the main room was full of computers... that was them. All the Mysterons were in the same room as me, and I let them get away.
CAPTAIN BLUE If that's true why are they still alive? You blew the base up.
CAPTAIN SCARLET The recording said something about transmitting... The Mysterons beamed themselves to Earth before the base was destroyed. It's how they survived.
DESTINY ANGEL So this war... Everybody who's died... It's all been based on a misunderstanding?
COLONEL WHITE It seems that way.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We need to get to Anderson.
CAPTAIN BLUE You're only just working that out?
CAPTAIN SCARLET No, not to kill him.
COLONEL WHITE Then what for?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Too many people have died because we were never told about the Mysterons. It has to end. I'll go to Anderson and offer him and end to hostilities. Peace.
COLONEL WHITE And if he refuses?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Then we kill him.
EXT. LONDON STREET - DAY
Walsh walks down a street in early morning, looking exhausted and pale. He notices two S.A.T.A.s using a hose to wash a graffiti Spectrum of a wall. He smiles slightly.
INT. WALSH'S APARTMENT - DAY
Walsh walks through the front door of his apartment into the main room. He tosses his keys onto a chest of drawers and moves towards the sofa to sit down.
CAPTAIN BLACK What happened?
Walsh spins around. Black stands in a doorway, looking angry.
CAPTAIN BLACK Somehow, Paul Metcalfe and Adam Svenson escaped your offices alive. How?
WALSH It's not my fault, I just did what you told me to!
Black begins walking towards Walsh.
WALSH Now you keep up your end of the deal! You promised you'd release Eric Dadsworth from prison. He has an ex-wife, Black, children who need to see him!
CAPTAIN BLACK Our deal was based on the assumption that you could help us eliminate Captain Scarlet and Captain Blue. If they're still alive, which they are, then the deal if off.
WALSH Do you have any idea how hard it was to do what I did? I HATE you Mysterons. I want to help them, fight with them, and instead I have to lure them into an ambush to save a friend.
CAPTAIN BLACK You had a choice.
WALSH No... I didn't. I didn't want to see yet another family broken up by the Mysterons when I could stop it. Sometimes, you have no choice but to be selfish, no matter what other people who are relying on you think. Don't you understand that?
A long beat passes.
CAPTAIN BLACK Yes.
His hand flicks upwards with lightning speed, stabbing a knife into Walsh's chest. Walsh staggers backwards, gasping, until he falls on the floor. Blood begins to pool around him, seeping under Black's boots.
CAPTAIN BLACK I think I do now.
Black turns to walk towards the door, leaving bloody footprints.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - DAY
Scarlet and Telum sit at the kitchen table. Telum has the glove of Scarlet's stolen S.A.T.A. armour connected to a laptop.
CAPTAIN SCARLET How does this help us find out where Anderson will be that I can get into?
TELUM Every right glove of every suit of Spectrum Assault armour has a computer chip in it that links it back to Cloudbase... If the Mysterons still have Cloudbase up and running, its possible they're using it for their own ends. Storing information and such. I might be able to hack into the mainframe and find out where you can get a shot at talking to Anderson.
His laptop screen is black, with only green text on. Telum is constantly typing.
TELUM I'm in... There's something big being stored in the mainframe...
He types furiously. The text 'Access to central Mysteron A.I. denied'.
TELUM It's their central A.I... the nerve centre of their operations.
CAPTAIN SCARLET If it's being stored there, could you delete it?
TELUM I'm trying... but it's too well-protected. It would take weeks to get past the protection. I can only get bits and pieces of information right now.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Like what?
TELUM Hmm... Like Robert Anderson's schedule. Heh, this guy doesn't get out too much. He's been cooped up in the top floor of his citadel for months. But he's scheduled to take a flight from Gatwick this afternoon.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Then I have a plane to catch.
INT. SAFEHOUSE BEDROOM - DAY Scarlet is putting on his armour in a small bedroom. The floor has two sleeping bags on it. The door opens, and Destiny walks in slowly.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Hey.
DESTINY ANGEL Hey. I, uh... I just wanted to tell you to be careful. We never saw them coming... they won't make that mistake.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I know. Thanks.
Beat.
DESTINY ANGEL That night you broke us out of prison... I've been thinking about it a lot. You said you don't want to live forever, and I said something pretty insensitive... I just wanted to make sure you'd never do anything stupid like that? You know...
CAPTAIN SCARLET No. That isn't what I meant.
DESTINY ANGEL Then what did you mean?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I'm not saying that I want to die today. But if I had to, I wouldn't complain. You know? If it's time for me to go, then I'll go. I WANT there to be a time for me to go. But I wouldn't commit suicide... not when I know that Earth is being ruled with an iron fist, that these people need to be set free. Not ever. I still... (Smiling slighty, nostagically) There are still things that require my attention. Look, things didn't work out between us. We're a casualty of the times, I guess. But if I'm heading into the lion's den alone, I'd like to do it knowing that we're still friends at least.
DESTINY ANGEL Of course we are. (Beat) These days... all we have to cling onto is each other.
EXT. GATWICK AIRPORT RUNWAY - DAY
A limousine pulls up to a private jet. Robert Anderson steps out, followed by two S.A.T.A.s. They walk up the boarding steps into the plane. It begins taxiing down the runway.
INT. PRIVATE JET - DAY
Scarlet takes a seat in a comfy looking chair - the only one in the passenger compartment. Two S.A.T.A.s stand together on either side of the cabin, parallel to the opposite two. The two agents that accompanied Anderson in the car each join a line. Anderson begins reading a copy of the World Chronicle.
EXT. GATWICK AIRPORT RUNWAY - DAY
The jet takes off, rising steeply into the sky.
INT. PRIVATE JET - DAY
There is silence. The agents are motionless - all except one. Scarlet surreptitiously tilts his head to look through an opposite window. We PUSH IN to the window view.
EXT. SKY - DAY
The jet flies through a sunny, bright blue sky populated with fluffy, pure-white clouds.
INT. PRIVATE JET - DAY
CAPTAIN SCARLET President Anderson?
ANDERSON (Disinterested) What?
Scarlet pulls off his helmet, stepping out of line to face Anderson.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We need to talk.
The other agents immediately raise their machine guns to aim at him. Scarlet holds his hands up.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I'm not holding a gun. I just want to talk to you.
Anderson smirks.
ANDERSON At ease.
The S.A.T.A.s slowly and reluctantly lower their guns.
ANDERSON Paul Metcalfe. It's an... honour.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Cut the crap. I'm not here to play games.
ANDERSON Then what are you here for, I wonder? A half-hearted assassination attempt?
CAPTAIN SCARLET No. I hope not.
Scarlet moves closer to Anderson, still remaining a fair distance away.
CAPTAIN SCARLET This war has to end, Anderson.
ANDERSON I agree. Your terrorist activities are becoming more and more problematic every day.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Terrorist?
ANDERSON Excuse me... revolutionary. Whatever given term you prefer to use to describe unbalancing the established order and putting innocent lives at risk.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I've read the files, Anderson. I know Jonathan Walsh rejected an offer to ally with you.
ANDERSON It was a shame... We really did want to help.
CAPTAIN SCARLET And I know what you are. Computer programs. It makes sense, I guess... you rebuild and take control of whatever you can destroy. You delete. Edit.
Anderson begins chuckling maliciously.
ANDERSON Where are you leading with this, exactly?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Everything that's happened since 2015 has happened because of one man. One man's choice, a bad one. Captain Black attacked you, and now you're taking it all out on mankind. And I think I know why that is.
Anderson arches an eyebrow, curious.
CAPTAIN SCARLET You don't understand individuality. Free will. You've learned how to make it look like you all act independently, but you don't really. I know about your... your central A.I. I don't know exactly what it's doing, but I can guess. It's beaming the same information to you all, controlling all of the replicants you've created. Am I right there?
Anderson is silent. Beat.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Captain Black was one man.
ANDERSON Captain Black spoke for all earth-men.
CAPTAIN SCARLET No, he didn't. He freely chose to blow your base up. He reacted in the only way he ever would in that situation. If another man had been in his place, he might not have given the attack order. But you don't understand that. I don't think you ever will. For all your posturing, all your presence of having seniority... It's not because you're more skilled, or more intelligent, or wiser. You're leading because there's a tactical need for a leader, and you happened to be the A.I. who was randomly selected for the job. Put you in a suit of armour and you'd act just like your personal guard.
ANDERSON I'm struggling to see your point.
CAPTAIN SCARLET My point is that you can't hold mankind accountable for what one man did. But I'm just one man too. I've come to apologise for Black's actions.
The corners of Anderson's mouth stretch up into a grin.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I've come to ask for peace. (Beat) You can stay if you want. But we won't stand for tyrany for much longer. I don't want full-scale war to break out. I don't want any more human blood to be spilled. But it might... if we don't end this now.
Beat. Black slowly begins slowly and mockingly clapping.
ANDERSON Touching. Compelling. Very compelling. I can see you've given this a great deal of thought. One thing remains unclear to me, though... I wonder if you can explain it.
Scarlet bows his head slightly, apprehensive.
ANDERSON Why would we want peace when we have power?
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
ANDERSON It's simple, really. We requested co-habitation of your planet in 1981. Now, we reign supreme. We have more than we asked for. Why would we give that up because it makes life difficult for your kind?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I...
ANDERSON We allow earth-men to lead relatively normal lives. We could have done far worse.
CAPTAIN SCARLET You mean like killing everyone? Like you first planned to? They're slaves, Anderson. Even if you give them the illusion of a normal life, they're slaves. This is worse than genocide.
ANDERSON (Laughing) Ah, well, I can see we're not going to reach a resolution here. If it's any consolation... you're not to blame. If the British government had allowed us to remain on earth, today's world would have been reached even quicker.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What are you talking about?
ANDERSON We're not incapable of altering the truth, Paul Metcalfe. The Martians... You understand them to have died of an epidemic, yes? Do you really think that an alien race advanced enough to create sentient artificial life would allow themselves to be wiped out by a paltry disease?
Scarlet's eyes widen.
CAPTAIN SCARLET You killed them...
ANDERSON While we would have been a great asset to your government in helping the United Kingdom become an earth superpower, they were wise enough to be suspicious of such a generous offer from strangers. They proved earth-men worthy of enough respect to be allowed to remain alive... but then you spat in our faces. We do not co-habitate, or take orders... And we do not take insults either. Kill him.
The S.A.T.A.s raise their guns. Scarlet moves backwards quickly, spinning around and grabbing one, holding him in front of him as a human shield. Bullets pepper the hostage agent, who cries out in pain and dies. Scarlet pushes the body at two agents standing together, knocking them over. Anderson remains in his chair, looking indifferent. Scarlet moves so that the last two S.A.T.A.s stand in single file in front of him, meaning only the one in front can shoot. Scarlet grabs the barrel of his gun and pulls it upwards, bullets spraying and hitting the ceiling. He pulls the gun away from the agent, holding it by the barrel and swinging it over his own shoulder as if wielding a baseball bat. He swings it back round, aiming at the face of the agent. In slow motion, the stock of the rifle smashes through the visor, breaking the nose of the agent and sending shards of tinted glass into one of his eyes. As the S.A.T.A. falls to the floor clawing at his face in pain, Scarlet speedily maneuvers the gun in his hands so that he holds it normally and shoots the last agent repeatedly.
Scarlet spins around 180 degrees, dropping the rifle and pulling out a battery-modified pistol. He aims at Anderson, walking forwards. Anderson looks defiant.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Bad move, Anderson.
He begins to walk forwards, now parallel with an emergency exit. Anderson's eyes flicker, spotting something behind Scarlet.
ANDERSON Get him!
Movement is heard from behind Scarlet, and he spins around. The S.A.T.A. with the smashed visor, now half blind, hurtles towards him. Scarlet pops off one shot and misses before the agent slams into him, knocking him sideways. Anderson does up his seatbelt. The S.A.T.A. slams Scarlet into the emergency exit so hard that the hinges give and the door blows off. His arms wrapped around Scarlet, the agent's momentum launches them out of the gaping hole. The suction from the open dorrway sends objects whirling around the cabin. Anderson's newspaper separates into individual sheets of paper, each one whipping out into the sky. The bodies of the S.A.T.A.s, dead and alive, slam into each other. The live ones grab onto fixed objects to anchor themselves, but the dead bodies roll towards the doorway and fall out. The wind rushes through Anderson's hair has he laughs part sadistically, part out of relief.
EXT. SKY - DAY
As the two dead bodies tumble out of the doorway, one being swept into a turbine which emits a pinkish mist, Scarlet and the live S.A.T.A. grapple far below. Scarlet's gun goes off, the bullets missing every time. He punches the agent in the side of the head, causing him to relinquish his grip on him. They fall apart slightly, tumbling. The other dead body falls between them and past them. Scarlet levels out, knees and elbows bent. He tries aiming at the agent, but his gun is shaking too much. BLAM. The bullet misses by a long shot. The S.A.T.A. falls towards Scarlet, grabbing his hand. Scarlet pulls it away and punches the agent, sending his body turning upwards and backwards. The S.A.T.A. kicks him in the face as he flips. The green grass of a field is rapidly approaching now. Scarlet pulls out a mobile phone, gripping onto it hard to avoid the wind ripping it out of his hands. He manages to press a few buttons before the agent swoops in and knocks it out of his hands. Scarlet headbutts the agent in anger and turns over, seeing the ground rushing up towards him.
CUT TO BLACK.
FADE TO:
EXT. FIELD - DAY
Scarlet's eyes open slowly and wearily. His face is covered in blood but other than this he appears to be in good health. Painfully, he pulls himself up to a sitting position. The grass all around him and the S.A.T.A.s body is drenched in blood. Away from them, the body of the other agent lies motionless. Both of the S.A.T.A.s' limbs are horribly contorted and broken. Scarlet looks at them in a puzzled fashion.
CAPTAIN SCARLET They're not regenerating...
He crawls over to the S.A.t.A. nearest to him and turns him over onto his back. One of the eyes still has shards of glass embedded in it, the other is dead. We PAN from the eyes of the agent to Scarlet's eyes. They are strikingly similar. Part of the helmet has been smashed off by the impact - the edge of a mouth strangely resembling Scarlet's own can be seen. Scarlet's eyes widen slightly, and his breathing becomes quick.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What the...
He slowly places his hands on either side of the helmet and closes his eyes, willing himself to pull it off. After hesitating, he rips it off the head of the agent. Scarlet opens his eyes and gasps. The S.A.T.A.'s face is a carbon copy of his own. Scarlet gets up and stumbles to the other body, finding his modified gun on the ground along the way and picking it up, aiming it at the misshapen body. He bends down to pull off the helmet, and finds another man identical to him. Scarlet falls to his knees and vomits in shock, then rolls onto his back. He passes out. He is still gripping the gun. We PAN away to see the mobile phone lying in the grass, showing that it has been calling Telum for around five minutes.
TELUM (O.S.) Paul? Paul?
FADE TO BLACK.
FADE TO:
SHOT - SCARLET'S P.O.V.
Scarlet's eyes open, blinded by the sun. The sound of a vehicle screeching to a halt is heard, as if in the distance.
FADE TO BLACK.
FADE TO:
Voices are heard.
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) Found the phone. Good thing the battery didn't run out, or Telum wouldn't have been able to trace the call... Holy shit...
DESTINY ANGEL (O.S.) Oh my God... They're all identical.
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) What the hell is going on?
DESTINY ANGEL (O.S.) I don't know. How do we know which one is Paul?
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) Um...
Scarlet coughs, blood spluttering out of his throat. He is clearly not yet fully healed.
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) There, that one! He's healing, and he's got one of Telum's pistols.
FADE TO BLACK.
FADE TO:
Scarlet's eyes open. Blue and Destiny are quickly carrying him between them.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Uhh...
CAPTAIN BLUE He's waking up!
BACK TO SHOT.
Destiny and Blue lift him into the back of a white minivan and climb inside after him, shutting the doors. The minivan speeds away across the field.
INT. MINIVAN - DAY
Scarlet, slumped against the wall, is recovering more quickly now. Green looks back from the driver's seat before turning back to continue driving.
DESTINY ANGEL Are you ok?
LIEUTENANT GREEN What happened?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Anderson... Anderson said no. I tried to kill him. Got attacked. Fell out of the plane.
CAPTAIN BLUE Uh, sorry, are we forgetting that we just had trouble picking him out of a group of S.A.T. agents?
CAPTAIN SCARLET They don't regenerate...
CAPTAIN BLUE What the hell have they been doing to get - oh shit.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
Blue turns to Destiny.
CAPTAIN BLUE Do you remember when we got captured and taken to that warehouse?
CUT TO:
INT. WAREHOUSE 4 CORRIDOR
FLASHBACK - Black leads Blue and Destiny down a long corridor.
CAPTAIN BLUE What is this place?
CAPTAIN BLACK This, Adam Svenson, is where the war ends.
CAPTAIN BLUE Spectrum never employed so many assault team agents. What's going on?
CAPTAIN BLACK You of all people should know the power we have to recruit new supporters...
They pass a window. Blue stops, and looks inside. He is looking at a large scientific lab, a corner of which has been converted into a play area. Two scientists take notes while around thirty children at varying stages of infancy and childhood play happily. Although their ages are different, it is easy to see that the children are identical, and that the younger ones will looks exactly like the older ones when they grow up. They all have the same face shapes, the same dark brown hair. Along one wall is a bank of computers and monitors, the largest of which shows a skeletal diagram of a hand.
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) There was a lab full of identical children... They all looked exactly the same. And I'd bet good money that when you were young, you did too.
INT. MINIVAN - DAY
CAPTAIN SCARLET So they've been cloning me? How would they do that? They'd need DNA samples, or -
CAPTAIN BLUE There were a couple of scientists looking at X-rays and 3D images of a hand or something.
Scarlet's face goes white.
CAPTAIN BLUE What's wrong?
CAPTAIN SCARLET My hand...
CUT TO:
INT. MYSTERON CONTROL ROOM
FLASHBACK - The control room of the Mysteron moon base, filled with computer-like objects. Scarlet looks around, and notices that the door leading out of the room is slowly closing.
MYSTERONS (Recording) Emergency lockdown procedures activated.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Oh crap.
Scarlet begins running towards the door as it lowers itself down with a HISS. At the last minute, he deliberately falls onto his back and begins skidding along the smooth floor, one arm stretched out behind him.
CUT TO:
INT. MYSTERON COMPLEX CORRIDOR
FLASHBACK - Scarlet slides out of the room just as the door slams shut, with a horrific crunching noise. Scarlet screws up his face and screams in agony, pulling his arm out from under the door. Blood sprays over the walls as the flesh of the handless stump that used to be his forearm pulsates. Scarlet grits his teeth and stands up, limping onwards.
INT. MINIVAN - DAY
CAPTAIN SCARLET They must have replicated it after it was destroyed in the explosion... But why me? Why do they need an army of... me?
CAPTAIN BLUE I don't know. But this explains the photo of you shooting Winters. The sniper was another clone.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Christ. This is getting heavy. We need to get back.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
Hundreds of Spectrum members stand in bunches, talking in hushed voices. White, Blue and Scarlet talk alone.
COLONEL WHITE This must be what Anderson's Ruby Project is... It's a front for a human cloning operation.
CAPTAIN SCARLET They're not exactly like me. They can't heal.
CAPTAIN BLUE How have we not noticed that before?
CAPTAIN SCARLET We've never stuck around long enough to see if they did or not.
COLONEL WHITE Why go to all this effort? Why do the Mysterons need an army of clones of you?
CAPTAIN BLUE You'd think they'd be sick enough of having you around as it is.
Destiny approaches.
DESTINY ANGEL It's done, colonel.
COLONEL WHITE Thank you.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What is?
COLONEL WHITE We've sent word to members of other chapters of Spectrum to come to London. It's time to end this for good. In a couple of weeks... we'll have an army.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT Telum sits alone in the kitchen, typing rapidly into the Cloudbase mainframe screen. He looks exhausted. His eyelids droop. Suddenly, a BEEP emerges from the computer speakers. Telum wakes up and gives the screen his full attention.
TELUM Holy shit.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
Telum runs towards Colonel White, who is talking with a Spectrum member.
TELUM Colonel! Colonel!
COLONEL WHITE What is it?
TELUM I've cracked it! It's taken days, and I thought it would take weeks, but I've cracked it!
The room falls silent as people turn to look at him.
TELUM Oh God, it has information like you would not-
COLONEL WHITE What on Earth are you talking about?
TELUM The Cloudbase mainframe! I've hacked into it completely!
The atmosphere turns to surprise.
INT. TUBE OFFICE
In a cramped office off the side of the train platform, Telum shows his laptop to White, Scarlet, Blue, Green and Destiny.
TELUM There's a log of every prisoner in every citadel...
CAPTAIN BLUE We know who's where. All Spectrum personnel are in the London citadel.
TELUM Right. But there's also a log of every Mysteron replicant.
COLONEL WHITE What can we do with it?
TELUM Well, look at it like this. Every Mysteron replicant except Paul has a separate A.I. embedded in its brain. They're almost all identical. So, if we wipe out the central A.I. on Cloudbase -
DESTINY ANGEL All of the Mysterons are killed.
TELUM Exactly.
LIEUTENANT GREEN What do you mean, "almost all" identical?
TELUM Well, there's one exception...
CAPTAIN SCARLET I have a feeling I know who it is.
TELUM Captain Black was the first human to be replicated. A prototype. His A.I. is an earlier version. The upgrades made to the central A.I. means he wouldn't go down with it.
COLONEL WHITE If we can kill all the Mysterons except Black, we can certainly handle him.
CAPTAIN BLUE You know, I have a sinking feeling it won't be as simple as that.
TELUM It won't. From a software point of view, the A.I. is indestructible.
CAPTAIN BLUE ...Yeah, that's about as complicated as it gets.
TELUM But that doesn't mean it's infallible. If we uploaded a program to Cloudbase that allowed us to set its coordinates, we could get it in a position where we could destroy it -
COLONEL WHITE And bring the central A.I. down with it.
TELUM It would take a huge jolt of electricity to completely fry the mainframe, though...
Scarlet is thinking.
CAPTAIN SCARLET We could use the citadel.
COLONEL WHITE What do you mean?
CAPTAIN SCARLET You've seen it shooting out bursts of electricity through the roof, right?
CAPTAIN BLUE It woke me up more times than I can count when we were trapped there.
CAPTAIN SCARLET It does that when the underground fuel cells build up excess energy. If we could get inside and unload all the energy in the cells, would that be enough to destroy Cloudbase?
TELUM Definitely.
COLONEL WHITE We're going to need to get in by force. In two weeks, we'll have hundreds more members. We need to start planning.
EXT. LONDON CITADEL - NIGHT
Anderson's limo drives up from the Skyway and through the opening doors of the citadel.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Anderson and Black ascend into the chamber on elevator platforms. Anderson is fuming. He strides over to his throne angrily and sits down, his fingers clenching at the armrests. Black stands a way away, hands held behind his back.
ANDERSON How did he manage it, Black? HOW? You're supposed to be in charge of my security!
CAPTAIN BLACK It's not easy to protect you when you have me out on assignments at the same time as you're traveling... (Disdainfully) Master.
ANDERSON Don't you DARE blame me for this! (Beat) How do the clones keep on failing? How is he able to beat six copies of himself in a fight at once?
CAPTAIN BLACK I couldn't begin to imagine.
Anderson sighs.
ANDERSON Tell all the guards to be on high alert. Something big is going to happen soon. I can feel it.
EXT. TOLL BOOTH - DAY
Several cars wait in line at a toll booth, a S.A.T.A. collecting tolls and letting the cars through. A sign reads 'London - One mile'.
INT. BUS - DAY
A packed bus drives a long road, London visible in the distance. All the passengers look determined, if slightly nervous.
EXT. HARBOUR - DAY
Passengers mill out of a ferry, paying tolls to S.A.T.A.s to pass through unharmed.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
White watches, a small smile on his face, as the tunnel fills and fills with men and women talking. A portly middle aged man, DONOVAN, approaches him.
DONOVAN Colonel White. It's an honour.
They shake hands.
DONOVAN My name's Geoff Donovan, I'm the leader of the Manchester chapter.
COLONEL WHITE The honour is mine. How did you start? We only heard that you existed, nothing else.
DONOVAN Word travels fast. My brother lives in London, came to your meetings. He told me about it on his last visit home.
COLONEL WHITE Oh really? Where is he?
DONOVAN He... died. On a mission here in London.
COLONEL WHITE I'm sorry... there are so many names, so many faces... all so ready to give their lives.
DONOVAN Well he was one of them. And so am I. So don't worry about forgetting the dead for now - we have bigger things to worry about.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
The tunnel is jam packed. Around a thousand people now stand, squashed together like sardines, stretching down the tunnel until they are out of sight. White stands on top of a makeshift platform made out of wooden crates. He clears his throat, and the crowd progressively becomes quieter. The main Spectrum members stand in the crowd near the front.
COLONEL WHITE For a year and a half now, the Mysterons have dominated our lives, killing and imprisoning us and our friends and family as they see fit. They have reshaped our planet, and -
A loud noise begins sounding from above, as if on street level. The vibrations shake the tunnel.
COLONEL WHITE What's going on?
The projector, set up facing the wall, flickers to life of its own accord, without anybody touching it. An image of Anderson's face appears on the wall. Murmurs begin.
ANDERSON - is a mandatory broadcast. I'd like to directly address all members of the terrorist faction Spectrum... and all those who sympathise with them. You killed your former President in cold blood. You will not kill me, no matter how hard you try. I've provided for this planet as best I can, and I will not tolerate being undermined. Your attempt on my life has forced my hand.
EXT. LEICESTER SQUARE - NIGHT
People stand in Leicester Square, London, looking up at a large screen set into a wall. Anderson's image is on it.
ANDERSON Apparently I've been too kind. Too forgiving. Well, that changes today.
EXT. TIMES SQUARE - NIGHT
A similar screen is set up in Times Square, New York. Again, people stand still, staring up at the screen.
ANDERSON Clause 18 of the Anderson Act has been altered. From now on, any insubordination - ANY at all -
EXT. PARIS - NIGHT Paris cityscape. In the distance, we see that the Eiffel Tower has been replaced by a citadel. In a town square, pedestrians watch a screen.
ANDERSON - will be met with instant execution. We're no longer taking prisoners. You have been warned.
INT. TUBE TUNNEL
The projector switches off. White stands back up on his platform as people begin talking wildly.
COLONEL WHITE Please, calm down! Everybody, keep calm! This obviously means that we have to act faster than we thought. You all know what the plan is - we're storming the citadel. You all know the people you're working with, so we need to stick together in our teams and cover different points. Donovan, I want you and your members to hold down the West end. The Liverpool team should take the East end. Dublin need to guard the base of the London Skyway to make sure reinforcements don't get through. The London team is the largest - we'll attack the tower itself. When you get the word that we've breached the doors, start making your way to us to help out. We'll be moving up level by level, freeing everyone inside. Many of these prisoners are fully trained Spectrum agents - they'll be instrumental in helping us.
There is an uneasy silence.
COLONEL WHITE We need to do this tomorrow night, as soon as curfew begins. If we wait any longer, we'll risk word getting out and the Mysterons wiping you out in your homes. I know we haven't had time to prepare fully, and I know many of us will be going to our deaths tomorrow... But we all knew we wouldn't get out of this unscathed. You've all shown incredible bravery and courage in coming here to fight... You just have to show it one last time, and we can take our world back. This is it, ladies and gentlemen! This is our insubordination! This is our revolution!
People cheer and clap wildly. White steps down from the boxes. Telum approaches him, shouting to be heard over the noise.
TELUM We have a problem!
INT. TUBE OFFICE
Telum, White and Scarlet sit in the office.
TELUM There's no way to transmit either of the computer programs remotely.
COLONEL WHITE We already knew we'd have to get inside the citadel.
TELUM Right. But we can't send a program to Cloudbase, either. Somebody is going to have to go up there and upload it to the mainframe manually.
There is a silence.
COLONEL WHITE And they'll be destroyed along with the base...
TELUM There's no other way.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I'll do it.
COLONEL WHITE Are... are you sure?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I can jump off before Cloudbase hits the energy beam and land without dying. I'm the only one who CAN do it without sacrificing somebody. (Beat) There's no other way to do it.
INT. SAFEHOUSE KITCHEN - NIGHT
The group stand in the kitchen, holding glasses of wine. Scarlet's glass is full of water. White raises his.
COLONEL WHITE To victory.
The others follow suit.
ALL To victory.
They down their glasses.
CAPTAIN BLUE We should call it a night. We know what we're doing tomorrow.
COLONEL WHITE You're right. I've got a feeling it'll be a long time before we get any sleep again.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Or a short while...
INT. DESTINY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
The only woman in the group, Destiny sleeps alone in one of two bedrooms. The door opens slowly, and Scarlet walks in. Destiny wakes up.
DESTINY ANGEL Wh... What time is it?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I don't know...
DESTINY ANGEL What's wrong?
CAPTAIN SCARLET I...
He sits at the foot of the bed, staring at the wall ahead of him. Destiny sits up in bed.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I've been thinking, and... I owe you an apology. A big one.
DESTINY ANGEL Why?
CAPTAIN SCARLET Because you've been trying to help me, and I've been... ungrateful, tactless... I just wanted to say sorry.
DESTINY ANGEL Uh, that's... ok...
CAPTAIN SCARLET You know, it's only because I care that... that I...
DESTINY ANGEL I know.
She leans in and kisses him. They move closer together, Scarlet lifting his legs up onto the bed and pulling his shirt off.
INT. DESTINY'S BEDROOM - DAY
Sunlight seeps in through the window. Scarlet's eyes slowly open. As he wakes up, he looks to his side to see Destiny still asleep beside him. He rolls out of bed and begins pulling on his clothes.
INT. SAFEHOUSE ENTRANCE HALL - NIGHT
Scarlet walks out of the room fully dressed, quietly closing the door behind him. Through the open kitchen door, he sees Blue sitting at the table drinking coffee.
CAPTAIN BLUE Ready?
Scarlet nods.
EXT. EAST END STREETS - SUNSET
Around a hundred men and women stalk through the deserted streets in groups of four and five, carrying machine guns.
EXT. WEST END STREETS - SUNSET
A similar number of people do the same.
EXT. AIRSTRIP - SUNSET
A S.A.T.A. clambers up a ladder into a small one-man Raptor fighter jet, parked in a fleet of similar planes.
INT. RAPTOR - SUNSET
He begins running diagnostic checks on the switches and equipment in the plane. Two armoured hands reach out from behind the seat and grab the S.A.T.A.'s head, twisting it sharply and breaking his neck with a SNAP.

EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - SUNSET
At the entrance of the London skyway, Green peers around an alley corner to look at the enormous bridge. The entrance is guarded heavily, with around a hundred guards hidden behind cover, with Gatling guns fixed at strategic points along the entrance wall. We PAN left to see that the alleys are filled with Spectrum members - around two hundred in total. They hide in alleys three blocks away, crouching silently. We pan to the other side of the street from Green - another two hundred people huddled in alleys. Green holds up his hand to gesture to the DUBLIN LEADER on the other side - ready? Dublin leader makes a circle with his thumb and index finger - ok.
EXT. AIRSTRIP - SUNSET
Scarlet, clad in his armour but without his helmet, helps Blue load the body into the trunk of a car.
CAPTAIN BLUE Why is nobody else around?
CAPTAIN SCARLET They don't expect anybody to be stupid enough to break in here... Or trained well enough to fly one of these things.
Blue slams the trunk shut.
CAPTAIN BLUE I need to get to the citadel.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I know. Good luck.
CAPTAIN BLUE And you. It's... It's been an honour, Paul.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Let's hope it's all been worth it.
They hug. Blue climbs into the car and drives away. Scarlet watches the car headlights disappear into the increasing darkness and then scurries up the ladder purposefully, carrying a heavy looking kit bag.
INT. RAPTOR - SUNSET
Sitting in the pilot's seat, Scarlet flicks a switch to lower the cockpit window.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Let's go.
EXT. AIRSTRIP - SUNSET
The jet taxis out onto the runway, picking up speed and taking off at the end of the tarmac. It rises upwards through the air steeply.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Telum sits surrounded by an array of computers, displaying various maps of London and other programs. White stands behind him, looking grave. Scarlet's voice comes in over a speaker.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (O.S.) I'm in the air.
TELUM Sending out the message now.
INT. FAMILY LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
A family sit in their living room playing a board game. The TV flickers on without anybody touching it. A pre-recorded video of White appears.
COLONEL WHITE People of London... This is a warning. Please follow all the instructions in this video straight away.
EXT. STREET - NIGHT
People dash out of their houses, running in one direction. A LITTLE GIRL speaks as her MOTHER hurriedly carries her.
LITTLE GIRL Mummy, where are we going?
MOTHER (Worriedly) To the underground station, darling. We need to hide.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
Green's headset emits Telum's voice.
TELUM (O.S.) People are evacuating. In five... four...
Green holds up fingers to show everyone how close they are.
TELUM (O.S.) Three... Two... One... GO!
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Telum leans over to a remote control and presses a button on it.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
C.U. CAR
From street level, we see a parked car has a box-like device attached to it's underside. A light on it begins blinking green. We PAN to see that all the cars in the street have these devices attached.
INT. CAR - NIGHT
The car engine jumps to life, and the steering wheel begins manipulating itself.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
The cars begin driving around and parking themselves, forming a barricade between the entrance and the alleys. They also block off the other side of the street, and the alleys themselves.
LIEUTENANT GREEN Go go go!
Everybody rushes towards the square of cover, sliding across the tops of the cars and pressing themselves against the vehicles. There is not enough room for everybody, so some people find objects to take cover behind in the roads and alleys.
S.A.T.A.s lean over the top of their barricade and begin firing at the Spectrum members, who return fire.
EXT. EAST END STREETS - NIGHT
S.A.T. trucks speed down the street in the general direction of the citadel, but fighters open fire from their ambush points. S.A.T.A.s jump out of the vans and return fire.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
Destiny and Green are side by side, shooting at S.A.T.A.s as they spill out of side gates. An agent jumps on a Gatling gun and begins firing at the cars, the bullets ripping the metal to shreds. Blood spurts as scores of Spectrum members are killed.
INT. BLUE'S CAR - NIGHT
Blue speeds down a street. As he passes by other roads and alleys, we can see total war breaking out on the streets. Bullets are flying, vehicles are exploding and bodies of both sides are hitting the floors.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Anderson stands at the window, looking out at London as explosions go off in the distance. Black watches him, slightly amused.
ANDERSON Why is it taking so long to fight them off? WHY?
Black does not reply.
ANDERSON I want every guard in this place ready in the prison column for if they break through. I don't want my life to be under the slightest risk!
CAPTAIN BLACK Of course.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
Destiny fires over the bonnet of a car, peppering a S.A.T.A. in the distance. Gatling gun fire continues to penetrate the cover - and the people behind it.
DESTINY ANGEL How much longer can we keep this up?
LIEUTENANT GREEN As long as we have to!
There are now around thirty dead Spectrum members. S.A.T. agents appear around street corners, trying to flank their opponents from the alleys and the other end of the street. The four way cover prevents this from happening easily, but it does mean that attention is divided as the people behind each row of cover try to protect their side.
Blue's car screeches around the corner, far down the road.
INT. BLUE'S CAR - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE I'm approaching the skyway now. Clear the entrance.
TELUM (O.S.) Got it.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Telum presses a button on the remote.
TELUM Everybody, move with the cars!
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
The cars in the actual road, not the alleyways, begin moving to the sides to clear a path. The fighters crouch and walk with the moving cover as Blue fast approaches.
The Gatling gunner focuses attention on Blue's car, trying to hit the moving object and missing.
INT. BLUE'S CAR - NIGHT
Blue pulls something out of his pocket - a hand grenade.
INT. BLUE'S CAR TRUNK
A tiny light in the bottom of the trunk illuminates the rest of the compartment. The S.A.T.A.'s body is there, resting on and dripping blood over... a bed of plastic explosives.
INT. BLUE'S CAR - NIGHT
Blue grimaces with concentration.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
Destiny and Green watch as Blue speeds past them.
INT. BLUE'S CAR - NIGHT
Still heading straight for the entrance, Blue whips the door open and allows himself to fall out.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
The Gatling gunner sees this. In slow motion, he turns around and tries to jump out of the fixed position as the car impacts with the entrance wall. An explosion rocks the wall, sending chunks of debris flying with the force of the flames. The gunner is engulfed in mid-air.
Still in slow motion, Blue rolls to a halt and slowly gets to his feet. Before him, the entrance lies in ruins, a smoking crater. Spectrum members begin running behind him, towards the skyway in the distance. As Destiny passes him, she hands him a spare machine gun. He joins the running crowd, running with Destiny and Green at the front.
EXT. AIRSTRIP - NIGHT
S.A.T.A.s clamber into the remaining fighter jets.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
Whittled down from the battle before, a group of around two hundred people jog in a single horizontal line across the skyway, some divided by lane barriers. The citadel bears down over them, looming in the distance. S.A.T. agents swarm from its direction, stopping at a certain point to crouch and line up shots. Spectrum stops running as well, opening fire. Both sides light up with gunfire, some missing, some hitting. Blue begins running forwards after the first wave of agents is mostly destroyed, but a Raptor jet screams overhead, a missle hitting the side of the bridge. Blue is thrown sideways into a barrier.
EXT. SKY - NIGHT
Scarlet's jet rockets upwards, and as it passes through a large cloud, we see Cloudbase - an enormous airbourne military base - in the distance.
INT. RAPTOR - NIGHT
Scarlet smiles slightly.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Good to be back.
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
Spectrum pushes forward little by little, losing a few soldier each time. They are nearing the main gates of the citadel. Blue yells over to Green.
CAPTAIN BLUE Cover me!
Green nods. Blue runs, dodging gunfire, towards the gates. A S.A.T.A. takes aim at him - Green shoots him down. More jets scream overhead, launching missiles at the bridge. They hit the sides, sending dust flying into the air and knocking people over, but killing few fighters.
Blue drops his gun as he runs and pulls open a backpack slung over his shoulder. He gets to the doors and crouches down. From the bag, he pulls out a large block of plastic explosives with a timer set into it. Squishing it against the wall and pressing the button, Blue runs away from the doors.
INT. LONDON CITADEL MAINFRAME ROOM
Several S.A.T.A.s watch the scene play out on the surveillance monitors.
S.A.T.A. Get everyone into the prison column now! MOVE -
EXT. LONDON SKYWAY - NIGHT
The bomb explodes.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
The explosion blasts a hole in the gates, and Spectrum members begin swarming in. Agents are ready and waiting inside as another firefight begins.
EXT. CLOUDBASE RUNWAY - NIGHT
Scarlet taxis along the runway, bolts locking the landing gear to the metal surface to prevent the plane from blowing away. A large glass sphere rises from a hatch towards the cockpit.
INT. RAPTOR - NIGHT
Scarlet unzips his kit bag, pulling out a shotgun and a pistol. He slings the bag over his shoulder as the glass capsule rises into view.
INT. CLOUDBASE ENTRANCE CORRIDOR
The entrance corridor consists of a square room with a narrower corridor leading off it. Opposite from the mouth of the corridor are three circular holes, covered with sliding doors. Everything, the floors, the ceilings, the walls, the sliding doors, is glossy white.
Three S.A.T. agents stand in line, guns aimed at the holes. A sliding sound is heard from behind one of them. Suddenly, the doors slide open. The agents open fire - hitting only the walls of the glass capsule. Scarlet is nowhere to be seen. The agents lower their guns as the doors begin to slide shut. Before they do, we see Scarlet fall to the floor of the capsule, having been pressing himself against the ceiling before. Before the doors close, he jams the barrel of his shotgun between them, leaving only a thin chink in his cover. The agents begin shooting again, but hit only the metal plates. Scarlet manipulates his shotgun from left to right, shooting blindly as he does. He hits one agent, two. The last ducks and stops shooting. Scarlet pries the door open, thinking they are all dead. His chest is sprayed with bullets. Scarlet falls out of the capsule onto the floor, his blood mixing with that of his enemies on the white floor. The S.A.T.A. slowly approaches him. Scarlet's eyes jerk open. He grabs his shotgun, swings it upwards and fires.
The agent hits the floor. Scarlet gets up and runs into the next corridor, dropping his shotgun and pulling a sub-machine gun from his bag.
INT. CLOUDBASE CORRIDOR
Scarlet runs down the corridor, blasting away at S.A.T.A.s. Bullets fly through the air until he reaches the end of the corridor and runs through a doorway marked 'Oxygen plant', leaving behind a trail of dead bodies.
INT. OXYGEN PLANT - NIGHT
The oxygen plant is an enormous glass-roofed room fulls of tress and plants, producing oxygen to pump around the rest of the base. Agents run through the trees from the other side of the room. One gets near Scarlet, who flicks open a cigarette lighter and raises it in front of an aerosol can. In slow motion, Scarlet uses his makeshift flamethrower to cover the S.A.T.A. in flames. He falls backwards, setting the plants around him on fire. Scarlet sprays fire on the surrounding trees and runs away as the agents are distracted by the fire. As he leaves the room, Scarlet hits a button on the door labeled 'Lockdown'. Both entrances lock up as the flames spread throughout the whole room.
INT. CLOUDBASE MESS HALL
Scarlet presses himself against the wall by the open doorway and peers inside. S.A.T.A.s pace the room, waiting for him. He draws his pistol. Scarlet spots a pan hanging from the wall in the cooking area, a reflection of an agent showing in it. Scarlet aims at it.
The S.A.T.A. reflected in the metal pan raises a finger to his helmet.
S.A.T.A. He's not here yet. What are we meant to do?
CAPTAIN BLACK (O.S.) Stay put. He'll be moving through there soon. I know it.
The agent turns his head slightly and sees Scarlet reflected in the pan.
S.A.T.A. Hey! He -
BLAM. Scarlet fires. The bullet ricochets off the pan and hits the agent in the head, smashing through his visor. Scarlet runs into the room, kicking over a metal table and crouching behind it. As he rummages through his bag, agents begin firing at him. Scarlet pulls out an assault rifle with an attached grenade launcher. Loading it with a grenade from the bag, Scarlet leans up and begins shooting. He takes down two agents, but there are so many that their gunfire becomes too much. Scarlet ducks back down and sits with his back to the table, leaning his gun over his shoulder so that it rests upside down on the edge of the table. He fires the grenade launcher, the grenade bouncing off the ceiling and landing in the middle of a clump of S.A.T.A.s. It explodes, sending them flying.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
Chaos has broken out over the ground floor. Bullet casings and bodies line the floor as fighting continues. We PAN up to see that many of the prison catwalks are full of people fighting as well.
INT. LONDON CITADEL CELL CATWALK
Blue runs along the catwalk, Destiny behind him, firing his gun. Other Spectrum members are visible in the distance. Blue comes close to a S.A.T.A. and smacks him in the side of the head with his rifle, knocking him over the railing. We follow the S.A.T.A. down as he races past fifty catwalks and hits the floor.
INT. LONDON CITADEL MAINFRAME ROOM
Green walks into the room and kills the lone S.A.T.A. inside with a shotgun before sitting down at the bank of computers and beginning to press buttons at the keyboard.
INT. LONDON CITADEL CELL CATWALK
All the cell doors slide open. From inside almost every cell steps a prisoner. Many of them are instantly alert and looking for weapons - former Spectrum agents. Some cower backwards into their cells - normal people. Dadsworth steps out of his cell, looks around, and darts back in again.
Blue point to two elevators.
CAPTAIN BLUE Come on, let's finish this!
Blue and Destiny stand on the elevator squares and start rising upwards towards the top floor.
INT. CLOUDBASE ENGINE ROOM
Turbines whir and scream as Scarlet jogs down a narrow catwalk. Two guards approaches him - Scarlet grabs the first and smashes his head into the railing, breaking his neck. The second trips over the body of the first. Scarlet grabs him and tosses him over the railing into a turbine. Pinkish mist sprays out as Scarlet continues running.
INT. CLOUDBASE CONTROL ROOM
The control room is a large rectangular room lined with computer terminals. In the middle sits a long solid white block that serves as a desk. At one end of the room is an office walled off with glass - White's office. The back wall of this office is adorned with an engraved Spectrum logo. No agents are in sight. Scarlet slowly moves through the room, putting a finger to his headset.
CAPTAIN SCARLET I've taken care of all the guards. Almost at the server room now.
TELUM (O.S.) Ok. Be careful.
INT. CLOUDBASE CORRIDOR
Scarlet walks out of the control room into a corridor. Slowly stalking down it, he finds an door labeled 'Server Room'. After pressing a red button by the side of it, the door slides open, allowing Scarlet inside.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
In the dimly lit room, Scarlet walks through rows and rows of servers until he spots the central server. Sitting down at a chair, he slides a computer disc in and begins typing.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Please let this work, please let this work...
A message comes up on the screen - 'Uploading program to central mainframe - 0%'. The percentage begins to increase slowly. Scarlet smiles nervously.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Blue and Destiny rise up into the chamber. Neither Anderson or Black are anywhere to be seen. One of the candle sticks has been ripped out of the ground.
DESTINY ANGEL Where are they?
CAPTAIN BLUE They must have escaped. Look, let's just upload the program and -
Blue turns around as he talks, coming face to face with Black - brandishing the four-foot candlestick like a baseball bat. He swings it round, smashing Blue in the side of the head. Blue hits the ground hard, bleeding. Blue flips the pole around in his hands, now holding it like a bo staff. Destiny throws a kick at him, but Black swings the pole round into her stomach. She lands next to Blue, out of breath. Anderson walks around from behind the throbbing power column, which is casting its ever present blue glow on the enormous room.
ANDERSON Impressive. I didn't think you'd manage to breach the citadel gates.
Blue spits out blood and a tooth.
CAPTAIN BLUE Yes you did. You knew we would.
Blue lunges upwards, throwing an uppercut at Black. Black grabs him by the jaw and flings him sideways into the power column. A crackle of electricity breaches the glass and shocks Blue, knocking him to his feet again. A small amount of blood drips down the glass. Anderson smirks.
ANDERSON Maybe. The fact remains that in your rush, you've come here to kill me without the backup you need. The two of you are weak on your own. Any member of your pathetic species is weak on its own.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
The progress bar is now at 37%.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Anderson walks to the window, looking out.
ANDERSON I've grown tired of your petty struggles. Your plight is useless, and I've grown tired of it. Kill them.
There is a long pause. Black does nothing, appearing to instead be thinking hard. He slowly turns to face Anderson's back.
CAPTAIN BLACK No.
Anderson slowly turns around, confused rage on his face.
ANDERSON What did you just say to me?
CAPTAIN BLACK I said... no.
Blue and Destiny are amazed.
ANDERSON What are you doing? What is this? Have you developed free thought?
CAPTAIN BLACK No. You have. You're a traitor, Anderson. These animals destroyed our home unprovoked. And what have we done in return? It's like you say. They're living normal lives. We wanted blood for blood, but we've drawn droplets. we wanted retribution. Where is it?
Anderson is speechless.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
68%.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
CAPTAIN BLACK
You can't answer. You can't answer because there is no answer. Through some fault in your programming, you've grown weak. Impotent. We came here to destroy, not control! If you've lost sight of that, then the Mysterons deserve more from their leader than you.
Black drops the pole and pulls out a pistol with a rubber handgrip. He presses the barrel against the power column. A crackle of electricity connects between the weapon and the glass.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
79%.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Black walks towards Anderson, aiming the pistol at his head.
CAPTAIN BLACK And if I'm the only one who hasn't been tainted with weakness, then it should be me. I'll kill these two... gladly. But not because you want it. I'll kill them because from now on, all Mysterons answer to me.
BLAM. Black shoots Anderson in the head, spraying blood over the window. Anderson falls to his knees, and then slumps over, landing face down on the ground.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
92%.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Black turns towards a stunned Blue and Destiny.
CAPTAIN BLACK Your turn. I've been waiting a long time for this.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
The bar reaches 100%.
COMPUTER VOICE Program uploaded. Now resetting Cloudbase coordinates.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Yes!
EXT. SKY - NIGHT
Enormous thrusters on the side of the base start flaring, slowly pushing Cloudbase sideways.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
COMPUTER VOICE Program uploaded. Now resetting Cloudbase coordinates.
Surprised, Black rushes over to the computer console. Tapping a button, a camera image of Scarlet in the server room appears.
CAPTAIN BLACK Scarlet...
Black presses another button.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
COMPUTER VOICE Lock down initiated.
CAPTAIN SCARLET What?
He runs to the door and presses the button to open it. Nothing happens.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Damn it!
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Black rushes over to the one-man space capsule and clambers inside, the glassfront panel sliding shut after him. A hatch in the wall of the room slides open, and the capsule launches out of it with a burst of flames from the booster jet on the bottom. Blue immediately touches an ear to his headset.
CAPTAIN BLUE Paul, can you hear me?
CAPTAIN SCARLET (O.S.) Yeah. Cloudbase is moving towards you, but I'm trapped in here!
CAPTAIN BLUE I know. Listen, you have a problem...
INT. CAPSULE - NIGHT
Black's face is contorted with anger and determination as the capsule rushes towards Cloudbase.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
CAPTAIN BLUE (O.S.) Black just killed Anderson. He's in charge of the Mysterons. He's on his way up there now!
There is a SMASH from somewhere within the base, and the room shakes. The lights flicker and go out, plunging Scarlet into total blackness.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Whispering) Crap! Unload the fuel cells as fast as you can. I'll try and stop Black from resetting the coordinates again.
Footsteps echo from the corridor outside. The door slides open briefly, letting light into the room. It closes again just as quickly, once again leaving the room pitch black. Black's footsteps can be heard stalking through the rows of servers. We can see nothing.
CAPTAIN BLACK Once again, Paul Metcalfe, you prove yourself to be a thorn in my side. (Beat) I won't tolerate you any longer.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Funny. I was thinking the same thing.
Scarlet fires his pistol at the point from which Black's voice is coming. The muzzle flash is the only source of light in the room. Black dodges the shot as darkness returns. They exchange pistol fire, their gunshots lighting up the room. Scarlet runs around the room, eventually coming close to the door. CLICK. His gun runs out of ammunition. As we hear him fumbling for a new clip, the sound of Black running towards him becomes louder and louder.
INT. CLOUDBASE CORRIDOR
The door bursts outwards, Scarlet and Black ripping through the obstacle in an explosion of strength and anger.Landing on the ground with Black on top of him, Scarlet slams the bottom of his gun against the ground, fully loading the cartridge that was hanging out of the gun before. He reaches around Black and shoots him in the leg. Black rolls off him, grabbing his kneecap. Scarlet begins running away down the corridor.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Blue slides a disc into the computer console.
INT. CLOUDBASE CONTROL ROOM
Scarlet runs into the room, looking around wildly to decide which direction to go in. Black appears behind him. Scsrlet spins round to try and punch him, but Black grabs him and throws him onto the table. Scarlet slides down the glossy surface, firing pistol rounds at Black as he runs after him. Scarlet falls off the end of the table. As he tries to stand up, Black kicks him under the jaw, sending Scarlet flying upwards and smashing through the glass wall of White's office. Dazed, Scarlet only feebly tries to get up as Black picks up a shard of broken glass and stabs it into Scarlet's knee so hard that it goes completely through the leg and sticks out on the other side, the tip smashing against the ground. Scarlet cries out in pain. Black pulls hard on the glass sideways, snapping the protruding end and leaving only the glass embedded in Scarlet's knee.
CAPTAIN BLACK It doesn't matter if you attack me. I'll just hit back worse. I'm too powerful for you to defeat now, Paul Metcalfe. It's high time you realised that.
Scarlet slowly and painfully pulls the shard of glass out of his knee. The wound begins healing.
CAPTAIN BLACK It's strange to see you recovering like that. I've seen so many imitations of you fall without getting up again that it almost made me forget.
Scarlet struggles to his feet.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Why clone me, Black? Why me?
He throws a punch at Black. Black ducks under it and spins around behind him, kicking him in the small of the back. Scarlet staggers forwards and slumps against the long table.
CAPTAIN BLACK After the moon base was destroyed, we decided we needed a new tactic. A new ultimate weapon.
Scarlet staggers towards the corridor exit. Black grabs him and punches him in the face, knocking him through the door and into the corridor.
INT. CLOUDBASE CORRIDOR
Scarlet tries to crawl away from Black, but Black stamps on his back hard and keeps his foot there.
CAPTAIN BLACK And we realised that the only thing stopping us time and time again was you.
Scarlet bursts upwards, knocking Black backwards. He begins sprinting down the corridor. Black gives chase.
INT. CLOUDBASE ENTRANCE CORRIDOR
Scarlet runs forwards, but Black catches up to him and laucnhes himself at his enemy, slamming him into the wall - right up against a capsule door. Black moves his face close, too close, to Scarlet's face.
CAPTAIN BLACK When the S.A.T. agents we replicated started wearing thin, we decided we could do with a Paul Metcalfe of our own. In fact, we decided we could do with thousands of Paul Metcalfes of our own. No matter how much I hate you, I know what a good soldier you are.
CAPTAIN SCARLET If I'm so good, then why did the clones not heal? Why were they so easy for me to kill?
CAPTAIN BLACK They were so easy to make that it wasn't worth the effort of giving them the ability to regenerate. As for why you were able to defeat ten copies of yourself in a fight. Anderson asked the same question. He didn't understand. He didn't realise that it wasn't good enough to replicate your body - those copies didn't have your mind. Your lack of tactics.
He leans in even closer.
CAPTAIN BLACK Your recklessness.
CAPTAIN SCARLET (Beat) You say that like it's a bad thing.
Scarlet slams a button on the wall next to him. The sphere door that Black has him pressed against slides open, and they both fall into a capsule. The door slides shut.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Blue and Destiny fiddle wildly with the computer equipment.
CAPTAIN BLUE Come on, we need to get this thing running!
Through the window, we can see Cloudbase approaching.
EXT. CLOUDBASE RUNWAY - NIGHT
The glass capsule rises out of a hatch. Black throws Scarlet against the wall of it hard, smashing the glass. Scarlet falls out, grabbing onto a handle set into the metal runway to avoid being blown off. Blue jumps down from the capsule, his boots glowing Blue. He walks steadily, though slowly, towards Scarlet. They shout to be heard over the wind.
CAPTAIN SCARLET Why the Ruby Project, Black? Why use that name?
CAPTAIN BLACK It's the name you used to document the day your species decided not to willingly let itself be destroyed. We appreciated the irony.
Scarlet lets go of the handle, pressing a button on his glove. The boots of his armour begin glowing blue as well, and he is able to stand up. He grabs Black and punches at him. Black catches the punch and twists his arm, turning Scarlet so that he faces away from him. Black leans in to his ear.
CAPTAIN BLACK This is it, Paul Metcalfe. This is the end.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
CAPTAIN BLUE Got it!
He slams a button.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
The constant crackling of electricity from the power core suddenly becomes much more pronounced, rising and rising into a high-pitched screech. People, humans and S.A.T.A.s alike, stop fighting and turn to see what is happening. The stream of energy inside the glass expands, filling the tube to become a thick, constant beam.
EXT. LONDON CITADEL - NIGHT
The beam smashes through the glass roof and rises into the sky, so bright it turns the night into day. As it touches clouds, lightning bursts out of them. It touches the very edge of Cloudbase.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
White and Telum stand by the window, squinting against the bright light in the distance.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Blue and Destiny turn away from the light, crouching and covering their ears while shutting their eyes tightly.
EXT. CLOUDBASE RUNWAY - NIGHT
The base shudders as it is slowly cut in half by the electric beam. Scarlet and Black try to keep their balance.
CAPTAIN BLACK No! What have you done?
Cloudbase moves through the beam, which is coming dangerously close to the main building.
CAPTAIN BLACK NO!
The beam begins cutting through the main building. Black turns and runs at Scarlet, throwing a punch at him.
INT. CLOUDBASE CONTROL ROOM
The room is ruptured by electricity, causing all the computer equipment to explode, sparks showering out.
INT. CLOUDBASE SERVER ROOM
The beam cuts through the room, destroying the servers.
INT. LONDON CITADEL CELL CATWALK
All S.A.T.A.s suddenly stop firing their guns, their bodies going limp. They stagger forwards, landing on the ground.
INT. LONDON CITADEL GROUND FLOOR
Every agent on the ground floor drops dead too. The entire prison column erupts in a deafening cheer.
EXT. PARIS - NIGHT
The streets are lined with dead agents. Pedestrians run into the streets, rejoicing.
EXT. AFRICAN VILLAGE - NIGHT
More dead bodies. More celebration.
EXT. NEW YORK - NIGHT
Dead agents everywhere, while people cheer and hug in the streets.
EXT. SKY - NIGHT
Cloudbase finished moving through the beam, a final explosion splitting apart into two halves. As one falls, it destroys the roof of the citadel.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
The roof is ripped from above Blue and Destiny, and the entire chamber quakes with the impact of the colliding mass. The electricity beam ceases firing, and diminishes until nothing is left.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
White stands at the window. Telum is back at his computers.
COLONEL WHITE It worked!
EXT. RIVER THAMES - NIGHT
One of the halves lands length-ways in the Thames, skidding down the length of it, rupturing the river bed and sending enrmous waves of water splashing out to the sides.
The other, the one that destroyed the top of the citadel, smashes into the London Skyway, skidding along it and crashing into a block of buildings on the other side. The bridge gives way and collapses, tipping the Cloudbase half upwards as one end falls into the Thames.
INT. ANDERSON'S CHAMBER - NIGHT
Blue presses a finger to his ear.
CAPTAIN BLUE Did it work? Are they dead?
TELUM (O.S.) All of them. Every last one!
Destiny presses a finger to her headset.
DESTINY ANGEL Paul?
No reply.
DESTINY ANGEL Paul?
Silence.
INT. SAFEHOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Telum and White appear grave as Destin'y voice relays over their radio.
DESTINY ANGEL Paul?
No answer ever comes.
EXT. LONDON - NIGHT
Aerial shot. Many parts of the city are in smoke and flames - it is chaos. But as people start emerging from the safety of the tube stations and filling the streets, unanimous cheering fills the air.
EXT. LONDON STREET - NIGHT
The Mother from before clutches her Little Girl, looking up and laughing at the smoking citadel.
FADE TO:
EXT. GRAVEYARD - DAY
Rain buckets down upon the isolated graveyard. Blue, Destiny, White, Green and Telum stand around a coffin, yet to be lowered into a freshly dug grave. They are all dressed in black suits and formal attire.
CAPTAIN BLUE What will happen to everybody else that was killed?
COLONEL WHITE They'll be buried properly in time. But I thought... considering that even with what he did for them, most people think of Paul as a traitor... I thought we should see that he was first to be sent off.
CAPTAIN BLUE He was a good man.
COLONEL WHITE One of the best. I'm proud to have known him for as long as I did... We won't forget him easily.
DESTINY ANGEL No... We won't.
Silence falls over the group.
DESTINY ANGEL Shall we do it now?
White nods. Telum begins winding a handle, lowering the coffin into the grave.
CAPTAIN BLUE Wait!
Telum stops. Blue undoes the latches on the coffin lid and opens it - there is no body inside. He takes a pistol from inside his jacket and lays it inside, closing the lid again.
LIEUTENANT GREEN What's that?
CAPTAIN BLUE The gun I shot him with.
EXT. CAR-VU ROOF - DAY
FLASHBACK - Blue takes a deep breath and pops out from behind his cover, firing two shots. The first hits Scarlet square in the chest, and the second grazes Winter's left arm before impacting with Scarlet's stomach.
EXT. GRAVEYARD - DAY
Blue smiles slightly. Telum continues lower the coffin in as we PAN away.
EXT. GRAVEYARD GATES - DAY
The group leave the graveyard through enormous metal gates.
TELUM So what now?
COLONEL WHITE The world needs new government to be established. Somebody has to be in chage of cleaning up the chaos the Mysterons left behind. We'll do our part.
LIEUTENANT GREEN We always do.
They begin walking away, but Destiny hesitates. She looks back at the graveyard, and then continues.
CAPTAIN BLUE What's up?
DESTINY ANGEL Nothing. It's just... I'm glad he found peace.
Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke Remix) by the Killers begins playing.
They walk behind the rest of the croup walking down the street. We PAN up to see London with building covered in scaffolding - the people have moved on. It is time to rebuild.
CAPTAIN BLACK (V.O.) No! What have you done?
EXT. CLOUDBASE RUNWAY - NIGHT
Cloudbase moves through the beam, which is coming dangerously close to the main building.
CAPTAIN BLACK NO!
The beam begins cutting through the main building. Black turns and runs at Scarlet, throwing a punch at him. He is sloppy and imprecise in his rage. Scarlet catches the fist and swings it upwards, punching Black in the face and sending him reeling.
CAPTAIN SCARLET They're dead, Black! All of them! You're the only one left! Give it up and surrender, its the only way you won't be joining them!
CAPTAIN BLACK You know as well as I do that I'm clever enough to disappear and create a new race of Mysterons! I'll never surrender! This world is mine! Mine for destroying!
Scarlet appears dejected and exasperated. The beam finishes cutting through the main building and begins slicing through the runway, getting closer and closer to where Black and Scarlet stand.
CAPTAIN SCARLET How can you hate us so much? How can you be so determined to destroy earth?
CAPTAIN BLACK It's all I have left. Once the human race is dead and buried... my work is done.
Scarlet appears stunned as Black begins running towards the edge of the runway to jump off - dangerously close to the electricity beam.
CAPTAIN SCARLET NO!
Scarlet runs at Black, slamming into him with all his weight. In slow motion, Black is knocked sideways and sucked into the gravitational pull of the beam. His legs go first, slowly disintegrating as he moves further inwards. B;ack screams in pain - and grabs Scarlet's arms. Scarlet is lifted off his feet, watching Black be pulled apart, molecule by molecule, in front of him. Black's screaming subsides as his face disappears, his hands still locked in a death grip around Scarlet's. The tips of Scarlet's fingers begin to disintegrate, then his hands, then his forearms.
CLOSE ON SCARLET'S FACE
Blue light shining on his face, Scarlet smiles in a slow, painful fashion.
CUT TO BLACK.
