EXT. NEW YORK CITY
We see a blue river with dozens of snowflakes falling down on to it. An NYPD helicopter flies across it shining its spotlight across the river. It flies towards NEW YORK CITY.
There is a sweeping shot of the streets of New York. The helicopter flies over the streets
A helicopter lies burning at the base of the building. Beside it are misc. pieces of the building. Red alarms go off inside the building. A SWAT vehicle pulls up and people get out and go into the building.
We PAN up the building of the AESIR CORPORATION building. The camera turning around the building until makes a 360 as we first saw it. SWAT officers run up the stairs inside the building as we PAN up the side of the building. On top is Max Payne holding a sniper rifle.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger. And then it was all over. The storm seemed to lose its frenzy. The ragged clouds gave way to the stars above.
Jim Bravura is inside the NYPD helicopter that pulls around in front of MAX.
JIM BRAVURA
(Over Megaphone)
Max Payne, this is Deputy Chief Jim Bravura from the NYPD. We've got the building surrounded. Throw down your weapons and lie down with your hands behind your head!
Max drops the sniper rifle and puts his hands behind his head. SWAT officers run up behind him.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
A bit closer to heaven.
FADE OUT
INT. POLICE STATION
SUPERIMPOSED: Three Years Ago
FADE IN: Max Payne and Alex Balder and in an office at the Police Station. Max sits in a chair, in front of Alex's desk. He has his feet propped up on the desk as he sips a cup of coffee. Alex stands on the other side organizing papers and knocking down Max's feet every now and then.
ALEX BALDER
So Max, you've been on the force for...how many years?
MAX PAYNE
Uh...three years. Why Alex?
ALEX BALDER
Well, I was just wondering - you don't have to. I wanted to know if...you wanted to join the DEA.
MAX PAYNE
(Laughing)
No, Alex.
ALEX BALDER
What's so goddamn funny about that, huh?
MAX PAYNE
Well it's just that, I have a family. They come first, you know?
Alex sits down at his desk and takes a sip of his coffee.
ALEX BALDER
Yeah, I guess so.
MAX PAYNE
I love Michelle. I love my baby too.
ALEX BALDER
Man Max.
Max stands up and puts on his leather jacket that was lying on the back of the chair. He picks up his suitcase.
MAX PAYNE
What?
ALEX BALDER
You're really living the American Dream.
MAX PAYNE
(Laughing)
All I need is Wally and Beaver. (Pause) I'll see ya later Alex.
ALEX BALDER
Stay safe Payne.
Max walks out of the door smiling.
Max is driving home in his car and he gets outside his house. A bunch of little kids are all playing on the hot summer day.
INT. MAX PAYNE'S HOUSE
Max Payne walks into his house in New Jersey. He is wearing a suit and tie. On the side of his coat is a police badge. Max looks around as he sets down his briefcase. His wife seems to be missing.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Life was good. The sun setting on a sweet summer's day. The smell of freshly mowed lawns, the sounds of children playing. A house across the river on the Jersey side. A beautiful wife and a baby girl. The American Dream came true.
MAX PAYNE
Honey, I'm home!
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
But dreams have a nasty habit of going bad when you're not looking. The sun went down with practiced bravado. Twilight crawled across the sky, laden with foreboding.
MAX PAYNE
Michelle? Honey, anybody home?
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
I didn't like the way the show started, but they had given me the best seat in the house: front row center.
Max looks around and walks into the kitchen. He looks down and sees a syringe filled with a green liquid. Max slowly pulls his gun out of his holster located on his chest.
MAX PAYNE
Michelle? Are you there?
There is a rummaging noise upstairs. The phone next to Max rings. He picks up.
MAX PAYNE
Hurry, call 911. Someone is breaking into my house.
CALLER
(On Phone)
Is this the Payne residence?
MAX PAYNE
Yes. Why?
CALLER
(On Phone)
Good. Then I can't help you. Goodbye.
The phone clicks and Max throws it down. The sound of a baby crying and a gunshot drowns everything else out. Max takes a sharp turn for the stairs. He runs up them and heads into the Bathroom.
MICHELLE
(Off-Screen)
Please no! Don't hurt me.
Max runs for the door connecting the Bathroom and the Bedroom. He turns the knob and the door is locked. We hear a gunshot.
MAX PAYNE
WHAT IS GOING ON?
He runs around and enters the baby's room. The clouds and sky blue wallpaper has splatters of blood and a weird graffiti symbol. The graffiti is a black "V" with a syringe going through it.
Max turns and sees a crib knocked over with a small young baby covered in blood. It has a gunshot in it's torso. MAX leans over and picks it up. He starts to cry. He sets the baby in its crib.
A junkie pulls out a gun and aims it at Max. Max turns and shoots the junkie in the leg. He then shoots him in the torso twice. The junkie hits the wall and smears blood all over it. We hear another shot as Max gets up.
MAX PAYNE
No. This can't be happening.
Max runs into his bedroom and sees another junkie tries and escape out the window.
Max dives for his shotgun and he slides across the floor to grab it. He cocks it and shoots the junkie trying to escape. Max drops the shotgun after he gets up. He looks at his dead wife lying on his bed. She bleeds at her stomach.
MAX PAYNE
(Crying)
No....Michelle...
FADE OUT TO BLACK

EXT. NEW YORK CITY
SUPERIMPOSED: Present Day
Snow falls on the Black Screen. It fades into NEW YORK CITY. Snow falls very heavily on the city. Everything is covered in it. There is no one outside on the streets of NEW YORK CITY.
INT. DINER
There is an old-timey diner and Max Payne sits in it eating a donut and sipping a mug of coffee. He looks up at a TV not far away from him.
We zoom in to a TV.
MALE NEWS REPORTER
There's has never been a snowfall as bad as this before. It's honestly like we've never seen. I suggest you all stay in side or get inside as soon as you can. It will not stop for somewhere around a week.
He turns to his female co-anchor.
FEMALE NEWS REPORTER
Thank you Jim. And now we are reporting on the success of the new Aesir Corporation. It was about two months ago this company formed and it's already one of the biggest around right now. More after this commercial break.
The telephone rings and the chubby guy behind the counter picks it up.
COOK
(To MAX)
Hey you.
Max looks away from the TV and towards the cook.
COOK
Yeah, are you Max Payne?
MAX PAYNE
Depends...whose asking?
Max stands up and grabs the phone from the cook. He holds it against his chest.
COOK
Some guy named "B.B."
Max puts the phone up to his ear.
MAX PAYNE
Max here.
Max sits down on a red stool at the counter.
B.B. (OFF SCREEN)
Hey Max. Are you busy?
MAX PAYNE
No, not at all. Why?
B.B. (OFF SCREEN)
Well I was wondering if you could meet Alex down at Roscoe Street Station. There's some suspicious shit going' on down there. I just want to make sure he's got back-up.
MAX PAYNE
What's he working on down there?
B.B.
He's finally tracked down those V Dealers. We need you down there to help with the bust.
MAX PAYNE
Yeah, I'll get down there A.S.A.P.
INT. ROSCOE STREET STATION
A silver train pulls into the underground station at Roscoe Street. The train has a red circle with a number four inside on the side of it.
Part of it is covered in rust and it looks new but beaten. The doors slide open slowly and Max walks out.
He is a little older than as we previously have seen him, three years older to be precise. He is wearing a black leather jacket with an open collared shirt under, showing a white t-shirt. His black pants and shoes go along with his brooding image.
As Max steps out he looks around for his friend ALEX BALDER. He goes investigating around. He walks up to the Men's Bathroom. Max pushes the door open.
He walks down the narrow hallway leading into the bathroom and he looks at all of the graffiti. He notices one of them is a Black V with a syringe in it.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
There it is. The same symbol that once haunted my hallway...and now my nightmares.
Max moves forward and opens the door way into the Men's Bathroom. He looks down stunned. On the ground is a dead security guard. He has a bullet hole in his head and two in his chest. There is blood all over the ground next to him.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
In the business we call this over-kill.
He pulls out his Beretta, quickly turns around and walks back out to the subway platform. When he gets there two mobster in front of him, with their backs to him.
One is holding a Pump-Action shotgun and the other is holding a Beretta. Max holds his Beretta firmly in his hand as he slowly steps out of the doorway. It slams shut and makes a noise.
The mobsters turn around and see Max. He shoots at the man with the shotgun killing him. The man's shotgun slides shortly in front of a garbage can. He dodges bullets coming towards him and hides behind the metal garbage can not too far away.
The mobster still shoots the garbage can. He looks at his gun and sees that it is empty. The mobster hides behind a part of a wall leading towards another part of the train station and reloads.
Max leans around the can and sees the shotgun in front of it. He quickly grabs it and stands up. Max turns around the corner as the mobster is done reloading his gun. Max gets his shot out first and kills the man. Max drops the Shotgun and pulls out his Beretta.
He holds it with both hands very carefully as he walks down a corridor towards a set of stairs. He quickly runs down them and enters an abandoned area. He sees a boarded off track area with a yellow old train car in front of the boarded area.
Max walks over to the yellow car and tugs on the yellow door of the train. It doesn't open.
MAX PAYNE
Damn...
He turns around and runs up a set of stairs and up another floor from where he got off. There is a silver door in front of Max and he looks at the number pad on the wall next to it. There is a blue light on the number pad. Max enters some numbers in and it goes red with a buzzing noise. He walks down a hallway holding his gun. Max turns into a bathroom.
MAX walks in and sees a thug holding a shot gun up to another man's head. There is another thug standing next to the first one, he holds a Desert Eagle. Max pulls out his two Beretta's from under his coat jacket and opens up on the two guys. They fall backwards and hit the ground. Another man comes out from a stall holding a machine gun and shoots at Max.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
Max dives and kills the man holding the machine gun, dodging the bullets.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Max gets up and walks over to the man on his knees. The man is crying on the ground. Max walks up to him and pulls him up.
MAX PAYNE
Are you okay?
SECURITY GUARD
Yeah I'm fine.
MAX PAYNE
What do you know about that silver door?
SECURITY GUARD
It's the control room.
MAX PAYNE
Can you take me there?
SECURITY GUARD
Anything for a guy that saved my life.
MAX PAYNE
Let's go.
CUT TO: Max and the security guard are standing in front of the silver door. The security guard pushes buttons and we see the screen on it turn green and a beeping noise is heard. He pushes the door open while Max stands against the wall on the right of him.
Inside the room two thugs stand with shotguns. The both open fire on the security guard. He files back and hits the silver door that closed behind him. Max opens the silver door from the other side and walks in.
He steps over the dead body and pushes on trough another door. A group of men with weapons turn around and draw their weapons. Max dives behind a metal desk with buttons on it. They all shoot at him while the metal desk gets sprayed with bullets.
Max stands up and shoots at the men. He kills all of them but one. He spins around and shoots at the last one, who is trying to run out the door.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
BULLET P.O.V
We see the bullet fly in slow motion towards the back of the man's head. The camera spins around and the bullet flies out of the front of his head.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Max walks over to this red door and he opens it, then walking through said door. He walks up to this big lever system. He pulls a lever so that the yellow abandoned train car will get power.
CUT TO: Max is in the yellow train car. He pulls a lever and then the train starts to gain power. It goes towards the bordered up tunnel. The train crashes through and opens up a way to an old tunnel from the 1940's.
MAX PAYNE
Well that was interesting.
He gets out and looks around the abandoned train area. Two thugs run up and they shoot at Max. Max quickly disposes of them.
CUT TO: Max is in a back area of the old train station. He sees a door to get out but it is locked and covered in explosives. He turns and sees this tunnel leading up to the Roscoe Street bank.
INT. roscoe street bank
Max gets into a vault at the back and he looks out of it. A group of men in ski masks are holding Colt Commando's. They turn around and see Max.
THUG
(Yelling)
Get 'em.
Max dives out of the way. He starts to throw big stacks of bills at them. He hits the one who yelled at him square in the head. While the man is dazed Max aims his gun at him and shoots him the head.
The rest of them run to the central part of the bank. Max runs over and takes the thugs rifle. He rolls behind a counter and unloads on them. They manage to miss most of his bullets.
Max leans against the back of the counter and sees a big bag of gold coins. Max runs over and picks it up. One of the thugs stands up and stars to shoot at Max. The thug starts running at him. When he gets close Max swings the bag of coins and hits him in the face.
Max takes cover behind the desk once more. He looks over and sees a Shotgun. He picks it up and looks at both the shotgun and the bag of coins. Another thug peaks out over the desk he is hiding behind and looks around. All of a sudden the bags of coins fly into the air. Max pops up and shoots the bag of coins.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
The coins go flying everywhere. Most of them go flying right at the thug. They hit him repeatedly over most of his face and chest. He screams while they hit him. He falls to the ground covered in blood and coins.
EFFECT: NORMAL
One more thug can't be found as Max looks around. He presses a button on the counter desk and another vault opens. We see another thug in there, holding a grenade.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
He throws the grenade at Max. Max runs towards it and jumps in the air. He grabs the grenade in mid-air and quickly tossing it back. While he lands he presses a button to close all of the vaults.
EFFECT: NORMAL
We hear an explosion from inside that vault. Max opens a different vault parallel from the where the explosion took place. Max walks into it and looks at the table.
On the table are some detonators, a large sum of money and some Aesir Corporation Bonds.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
This would have been a huge payout for whoever was doing this job.
Max picks up the detonators and looks at them in his hand.
CUT TO: We see a door inside the Train Station. We see Alex Balder behind a gate. He holds his gun out.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
The down suddenly explodes in a burst of flames. It pushes the door forward.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Max steps out from the rubble, coughing. Smoke surrounds him. When he sees Alex he lets out a little smirk.
ALEX BALDER
Max, what the hell are you doing?
MAX PAYNE
Alex...am I glad to see you.
ALEX BALDER
What's up with this place? It's like the freakin' City Morgue down here. I have never seen more corpses in my life.
MAX PAYNE
It's an armed robbery. A tunnel job straight through the Roscoe Bank vault through the old station wall. Is this why...
ALEX BALDER
Is this Lupino's doing? Lupino's men? Really?
MAX PAYNE
I guess we got lucky.
ALEX BALDER
Something like that.
MAX PAYNE
Can you get out of here?
ALEX BALDER
Nah, it's locked.
CUT TO: A man dressed in a black tailored suit, wearing black sunglasses, holding a gun walks down a set of stairs out of view behind Alex. He aims his gun at Alex. Something is special about his gun. The handle is golden and the rest of it is very metallic. It is a nice expensive gun.
ALEX BALDER
We've gotta get outta here. If it's Lupino, it's...
The gunman shoots ALEX in the back, killing him.
MAX PAYNE
Alex? Alex!
MAX looks over behind Alex, he pulls out his gun and tries to hit Alex's killer.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
He was dead and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. The look in his cold dead eyes looked up accusingly, as if this was my fault. As if I could have stopped this. If only I could.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
Max walks away from Alex's dead body.
FADE OUT
FADE IN:
Max walks up the steps out side on the streets of New York. He hears the sirens of the NYPD roaring towards him.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Next Stop: Jack Lupino's Hotel.
Ext. LUPINO'S HOTEL
Max walks up to Lupino's Hotel. He goes up to it and yanks the door open.
INT. LUPINO'S HOTEL
Max walks around the hotel, peering around the corners. MAX is on the look-out for Jack Lupino. Two twin brothers walk around a corner towards Max. They are the Finito Brothers. They are Lupino's Enforcers.
JOEY FINITO
Well...well..well...Max Payne.
VIRGILLIO FINITO
Pain to the Max.
MAX PAYNE
Well, if it isn't the Finito Brothers. Why don't you point me towards Jackie Boy?
JOEY FINITO
Let's take a trip to his office.
INT. JACK LUPINO'S OFFICE
The Finito Brothers walk in front of MAX. They go behind a desk. MAX sits down on a couch. Behind the desk Joey opens a drawer and looks down at the gun in it. Virgillio grabs a bottle of scotch and pours three glasses.
JOEY FINITO
(Laughing)
Payne in the butt, Max Payne.
MAX PAYNE
You're killing me. Did you make that up yourself, or did you get some wino downstairs to come up with it? (Beat) Don't answer that. A rhetorical question. (Beat) I got something for the boss. Lupino around or what?
VIRGILLIO FINITO
That kind of depends who's asking' - a friend or a junk squad plant! But don't answer! It's one of them... ah... how'd you put it... rhetorical questions.
JOEY FINITO
He uh..Did leave a message for anyone who comes by...
Max leans to the right and Joey sees his badge and gun under his coat. Joey feels around for his gun.
JOEY FINITO
(Cont.)
He said, this was specifically to cops...
Max stands up and almost reaches for his gun. Joey whips his out and aims at Max.
JOEY FINITO
(Cont.)
He wanted to say "Bye."
Joey opens fire on Max. Max flips behind the couch and rolls. He crouches over behind a wall. Max pulls out his Desert Eagles and gets ready. He rolls to the side and puts three bullets in Virgillio's head. Joey takes a glass of scotch and throws it towards Max. Max shoots it in mid-air and then shoots Joey four times in the chest.
Max stands up and gets a breath. He snoops around the room. On the table is a letter from Vinnie Gognitti to the Fintio Brothers. The letter explains that a "V" deal is going down at the hotel and the Finito's along with Chicago mobster Rico Meurte are to see the deal through. MAX reads it and on the bottom we see the number 313, with the name Muerto by it.
CUT TO:
Max walks down the hallway of the hotel and looks at the TV.
NEWS REPORTER
(On Screen)
This is Weather Warning in effect. We advise you to not go anywhere tonight. There is a very strong blizzard going on right now and there is no need to be outside.
NEWS REPORTER #2
Thanks Jill. We have word on a mass killing at Roscoe Street Station. Our source says that DEA Detective Max Payne killed over 20 men there tonight, one of them was his own partner Alex Balder. Word is that Max hired these men to help rob Roscoe Bank and once they got inside for him, he brutally murdered them all. He is armed and very dangerous. Do not try and stop him. Report to the police right away if you do see the victim.
Max stands with his gun by his side in his hand. He watches the TV.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
I was always told life wasn't fair. (Pause) Life has a way of pointing this out to me again and again.
He keeps walking until he gets to room 313. He opens the door with his gun out rigid in front of him. He opens the door and in front of it is a chair with a shotgun on it. The shotgun is hooked up to the door. It goes off and shoots Max right in the leg. Max falls backwards into the wall. He gets up and starts to limp. He looks around the room and walks to a desk with a diary open.
MAX PAYNE (V.O)
I didn't read much of it; the pain affecting my greatly. All I picked up was a V deal going down tonight. Here. In a conference room downstairs.
CUT TO:
Max walks outside the conference room. He gets to the door and puts his ear up to it. Max peaks through the crack in the door.
Four men stand around a large table, two on each side.
DEALER
Okay now listen. I don't want this shit all over the streets. Just your neck of the woods. No dealing' in the Russian area, got it? I understand the tension but let your guns do the work. Got it?
BUYER
Yeah, yeah, I hear ya.
DEALER
So you got the money?
BUYER
O'course I got it. $5,000 in non-sequential bills liked you asked.
The buyer's associate sets a briefcase on the table and opens it, showing the two the money. The buyer points his gun at his friend and then at the table. He sets his briefcase on the table and opens it also. Inside are vials of green liquid. The dealer picks it up and shows him.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Tonight I'm not a cop. I'm just here to settle the score. Might as well make sure they don't get any business done.
Max kicks the door open pointing his weapon. He shoots at the dealer. He hits the vial making it explode and killing the dealer in the process.
The other men pull out their weapons. Max turns quickly and shoots the dealer's friend a couple times. The buyer's friend grabs the money and flings it in the air, making it hard to see. Max rolls backwards by a table and turns it over to get some more cover.
The buyer crawls on the ground and sees a shotgun on the ground. He grabs it and starts to shoot at the table. It misses Max who leaps over the table. He shoots at the buyer who falls backwards into the wall, smearing blood all over the wall.
Max looks around for the buyer's friend. He runs behind MAX and swings at him. He hits Max in the back of the head, who falls over. The Buyer's friend leaps at Max with a knife in his hand. Before he can make it to him, Max points his gun into the air and shoots him.
Max walks into a bathroom towards the back of the room. Max leans against the wall. He looks over and sees a cabinet with painkillers inside. He turns towards it and opens it. He grabs a container and pops some of the pills in his mouth. He takes the other three bottles, along with the first, and puts them in his coat pocket. Max walks past a table and sees a key on it. It says "Bar" on a tag attached to it.
CUT TO:
Max has the key in his hand as he is unlocking the Bar. He walks inside and sees Rico Muerte standing behind the bar. Max catches him mid-sentence.
RICO MUERTE
..Two mad dog murderers are at each others neck. They go to the next room and I think it's about to be over.
We here a "MHMM" but can not see where it is from. There are strange noises coming from behind the bar.
RICO MUERTE
But no! The two go in and start playing' some Kung Fu video game.
A girl rises from behind the bar. Her name is Candy Dawn. She wipes off her mouth.
RICO MUERTE
I swear Candy, I was so mad I strangled the both of 'em with the cords from the game.
CANDY DAWN
Oh Rico you're so bad.
RICO MUERTE
I am, aren’t I?
Rico grabs her head and starts to push her down.
MAX PAYNE
Rico Muerte, Big-Time Hustler.
Both of them turn towards Max.
RICO MUERTE
Who the hell?
Rico motions for his gun.
CANDY DAWN
It's that cop!
Rico holds his gun, taking cover against the bar. Candy hides behind the counter also, pulling a very small gun around her ankle. Max takes cover behind a table in the bar. As he isn't looking Rico escapes out a door, exiting the bar.
Candy rises from the bar and shoots at MAX. He rolls out from behind the table and shoots her three times. She slides against a cabinet in the bar. Bottles break and knock over as she dies.
Max exits the door Rico does. As he turns the corner in a back hallway of the Hotel, Rico runs away with his pants around his ankles. Max shoots him in the back and walks away.
CUT TO: Max enters a back room towards the door leading out of the Hotel. He sees a switch board and a pair of headphones. Max picks them up.
RICOO MUERTE
(OFF SCREEN)
Boss...Gognitti...It's Max Payne...he came in and cap us...He killed....ugh.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
Are ya freakin' kidding me? He's a fuckin' cop. You've killed enough of those in your life, one more wouldn't hurt! Whack 'em. What's ya freakin' problem? Hello? Ya' there? Answer me!
Max sets down the head set. He walks out side the Hotel.
EXT. STREET
Max walks out side of the Hotel. The snow falls on him as he looks forward.
MAX PAYNE (V.O)
Word got out. Max Payne was at large. Turn around, walk away, blow town. That would have been the smart thing to do. Guess I wasn't that smart.
Max closes in on a group of buildings. They are owned by Jack Lupino. As he gets close one of the higher up floors explodes. MAX puts his hands in front of his face for cover. He winces and takes a glimpse.
As it goes up in flames a Black Mercedes Benz drives by. Riding shotgun is Head of the Local Russian Mob, Vladimir Lem, Don Punchinello's Rival. The car drives on by.
MAX PAYNE (V.O)
The sound ringing in my ears was the sound of a gang war going on. I needed to get as much as I can on Lupino but his building had just gotten a makeover.
Max walks in and investigates the building. He walks up the stairs to see how far he can get up. He gets up about five floors. He walks down stairs as he hears a noise.
A Pay Phone rings in the corner of a lobby. Max picks it up.
MAX PAYNE
Hello?
MAN (O.S.)
Am I speaking to Mr. Payne?
MAX PAYNE
Who wants to know.
MAN (O.S.)
My name is Alfred Woden. You must hurry. The police are on their way.
MAX PAYNE
Tell me something I don't know.
ALFRED WODEN (O.S.)
They know you are there.
MAX PAYNE
How do they know?
ALFRED WODEN (O.S.)
You must get out now.
MAX PAYNE
What's it to you?
ALFRED WODEN (O.S.)
I must go now. I will keep in contact.
*Klik*
Max starts to run back up the stairs as he hears Police Sirens.
CUT TO
EXT. STREET
Three cop cars pull up outside of the flaming tenement building. Out of it walks Jim Bravura. He holds a blow horn in his hand.
JIM BRAVURA

Max quickly makes his way up the stairs again.
MAX PAYNE (V.O)
Pretty soon the Swat team would be here to do their same old song and dance, by then I need to be out of here.
Max throws himself through a door, into a room and climbs out the window onto the fire escape. He runs up and breaks into a room. Inside the TV is on.

MAX PAYNE
Vinnie, just the man I've been killing to see.
Vinnie turns and points his gun at MAX.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
Payne! Ya' freakin' fed. I knew there was something screwy about you from day one. I mean what do ya think you're freakin' doing. You're a cop. You ain't got squat on us. You can just come in here wavin' you piece like it means something.
Vinnie shoots at MAX.

Max dives out of the way just dodging the bullet. He shoots at Vinnie and hits him in the stomach.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Vinnie holds his stomach as it bleeds.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
You shot me! You fucking shot me. You're dead.
Two thugs come in through another door. They both hold guns. Vinnie starts to run towards the window.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
Get em you apes. Shoot em. You're dead Payne. You hear me?
Vinnie climbs out the window and jumps onto a roof across the alley. The two thugs aim their weapons at Max and start to shoot at him. Max hides behind a desk and waits for them to reload. Once they do he bolts out towards the Window. He jumps out and hangs on the fire escape. Max leaps on top of the roof. He rolls as he lands. Off in the distance he sees Gognitti on top of another roof.
Max starts to run off towards him. Behind him Vinnie's thugs shoot towards Max. Max dodges all of the bullets.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Vinnie knew where Lupino was and I needed to get to him fast. Things needed to be settled with Jack. Gognitti was off fast. I don't know about angels but it's fear that gives men wings.
Max starts to catch up to Vinnie. He looks back and sees Max running towards him. Vinnie smiles and leaps off of the roof. Max gets to where he was standing. Down below is a train roaring by. On the ground is Vinnie's pistol, covered in blood.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Collecting evidence had gotten old a few hundred bullets back.
Max takes a step back and leaps on to the end of the train. He lands on it and slides around. Max grabs onto the front of the car. He slowly stands up. He kneels gently on the train, holding his gun.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
My second train ride of the night was shaping up to be just as worse as the last. The freezing wind was tearing at my face like sandpaper and razors. Somewhere in the background of the city was the wail of sirens, howling at me.
The train slows down and Vinnie jumps off of the train. He lands on his feet and starts to run. Max also jumps off slowly coming behind Vinnie. MAX shoots at Vinnie as they run after each other. Vinnie turns around a corner into a dead end. Max shoots him in the leg and he falls to the ground.
Max runs up and points his gun down at him.
MAX PAYNE
Vinnie...We need to talk.
Max kneels down and grabs him by the hair.
MAX PAYNE
(Cont.)
Where's Lupino?
VINNIE GOGNITTI
Screw you!
MAX PAYNE
Not a good start at all.
Max pushes his gun against his head strongly.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
Argh! Police brutality!
MAX PAYNE
I rate pretty high on that Vinnie. Better start talking about Lupino. Fast.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
You can't kill me in cold blood like this.
Max grabs his collar and pushes his head on the sidewalk and then pulls it back up.
MAX PAYNE
Keep telling yourself that.
He pulls his gun back and pushes it in his face hitting him hardly.
MAX PAYNE
Listen good Gognitti. I will not be anyone's fall guy. I want to know where Lupino is right now.
Max holds his gun tightly against Vinnie's head. Max waits there, holding the gun. The music in the background swells to a high note. Max pulls the trigger.
CUT TO BLACK
*Klik*
Vinnie lies on the ground, crying.
VINNIE GOGNITTI
Okay, okay! I'll tell ya. He's at Ragnarock. The nightclub. Haul me into the station. Book me. Whatever. Just don't kill me.
MAX PAYNE
I'll read you your rights at your funeral, Gognitti.
CUT TO:
EXT. RAGNAROCK
A car pulls up to big Cathedral-looking building. Purple neon letters that say "Ragnarock" stick out against the dark sky. A heavy blizzard continues on.
The car door opens and out walks MAX. He runs up to the front of the nightclub.
INT. RAGNAROCK
Max enters the dark and gothic nightclub. He cocks his Desert Eagle in his hand and starts to walk down the hallway.
He makes his way into the main part of the club. Techno music is playing all around but no one is there. Max takes a peak inside of a bathroom.
Inside there is a junkie on the floor with a rubber band tied around his arm. He takes a green syringe and injects it into his arm. When a small amount is gone he sets it down and starts to freak out.
JUNKIE
GODS FROM ABOVE, SPEAK TO ME. TELL ME WHAT I MUST DO.
The junkie turns around and sees Max behind him. He leaps up and jumps to the back of the bathroom wall. Max takes a couple of steps forward, with his gun out as the Junkie pulls a gun out of his waistband. He points it right at Max's face.
MAX PAYNE
(Sternly)
Put the gun down. Now.
The junkie doesn't listen.
JUNKIE
The gods are telling me to do this. I must follow their every command.
Max starts to pull the trigger of the gun as the Junkie does the same. They both hit each other in the arm. The junkie runs towards Max and pushes him back into the wall. He puts his gun against Max's head and tries to shoot him.
Max hits the gun and the Junkie shoots the bathroom wall. He hits the gun out of his hand and throws him into the bathroom stall. The Junkie hits him in the face a couple of times until Max pushes him against the side of the stall.
The stall wall breaks and knocks over into the next one. The junkie spins him and Max around in other positions and does what Max did to him, pushing him through the rest of the stalls.
Max hits a mirror, shattering it in the process. He struggles to get his gun out but the Junkie proceeds to slam him into the wall. The gun falls out of his hand and slides across the ground.
Max dives for his gun and is just short of it as the junkie falls on top of him. Max tries to stand up and throws him into the wall. Max inches forward and grabs his Beretta. He turns and shoots the junkie. He slides down the wall as blood smears against the wall.
CUT TO:
Max walks out of the bathroom and leans against the wall to catch his breath. The wall moves backwards slowly, revealing a secret hallway.
CUT TO:
Max walks down a candlelit hallway. He comes to a room filled with random books about the Occult. He picks them up and takes a look through them.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Klaatu varada nitko? This is some crazy stuff and I didn't like the fact that Lupino was into it.
Max walks down a set of stairs and into a dark hallway. A faint noise of a man screaming inaudible phrases. He shouts them as if he was on a timed routine; saying the same thing over and over again.
Max slowly walks into a curtained room. He walks up a small set of stairs and sees a man standing up in front of a podium. Candles are lit everywhere.
Jack Lupino stands behind his podium holding an Uzi in his hand. A black tattoo is scrawled on his face, wrapped around his eye. He looks menacing down at Max.
JACK LUPINO
I have tasted the flesh of fallen angels. I've tasted the Devil's green blood.
Max takes a couple of steps or so forward. He is very careful about where he steps so that he doesn't gain Lupino's attention.
JACK LUPINO
(Cont.)
It runs inside of my veins. I've seen beyond the world of just skin, blood and organs. More than what is before us.
Lupino throws up his hands as many people wearing hooded cloaks come out of the darkness behind the curtains. Jack sees Max walking and looks dead at him.
JACK LUPINO
(Cont.)
Yes Mother...I hear you. I understand what is going to have to happen. (Looks at Max) The Devil herself has told me what to do. I am ready to become her son! Death is upon us Mr. Payne. Sad thing is only one of us will be rewarded for this. All those who stand in our way must DIE!
Lupino signals his men to attack Max. All of the men pull out M16's from out under their robes. Max looks towards a rope dangling from the ceiling. He runs towards it while being shot at from the cloaked men.
He leaps in the air and climbs up the rope. Max holds his Beretta and looks around. He sees a tiny ledge and on it is a Molotov Cocktail. He picks it up and searches his pocket.
Quick Cut: The cloaked men gather around the bottom of the rope.
Max pulls a lighter out of his pocket and lights the Molotov Cocktail. He throws it straight down at all of the cloaked men. It hits two of the men and the other four get some tiny flames. The two that got hit fall to the ground and burn. Max lightly slides down the rope and hits the ground. He shoots the four remaining men as they were preoccupied with their flames.
Max quickly turns and sees Lupino staring at him. He holds his Uzi firmly in his hands and steps forward. As he walks away from his podium he throws it off to the side.
Lupino falls to his knees right in front of Max.
JACK LUPINO
I hear you. Do not fear for I am coming.
Max looks down at Lupino and understands. Max opens fire on him and uses the whole clip.
WOMAN
I think he's dead by now...
Max turns around quizzically. Mona Sax walks out of the shadows. She holds a Desert Eagle in her hand.
MONA SAX
...but dead or not, you've got the wrong guy.
Max walks towards him as he holds his gun out towards her head. The camera pans out and we see she is doing the same thing.
MAX PAYNE
Lisa Punchinello...?
MONA SAX
Mona Sax, Lisa's evil twin...
MAX PAYNE
Your safety's off, evil twin. You wouldn't want to hurt anyone now would you?
MONA SAX
Lisa's the damsel in distress, I'm the professional. I'd blow you away without even batting an eye.
MAX PAYNE
Sure, and you can check my credentials splattered all over the place.
MONA SAX
Lupino couldn't have framed you, not in the state he was in. We're after the same scumbag Max. Don Angelo Punchinello's the one who murdered your friend and blamed you with it.
MAX PAYNE
You know this for a fact?
MONA SAX
I've got my sources.
The two lower their guns towards each other's necks.
MAX PAYNE
I don't have a clue what's going on these days. I just shoot 'em as they come. So, who put a contract on the Don?
MONA SAX
This one's mine. I hate the guts of that sadistic wife-beater.
They both raiser their guns back up at each other's heads. We see their profiles.
MONA SAX
How about we pool our bullets for this one, Max?
MAX PAYNE
I never thought you'd ask. My trigger finger was itching.
They both lower their guns and put them away. Mona goes over to the bar and finds a bottle of whiskey.
MONA SAX
So how do you like your whiskey?
MAX PAYNE
On the rocks, as long as you don't try and slip me a mickey. (laughs)
Mona pours Max a glass and he takes it. He takes a big swig of the whiskey.
MONA SAX
Max...you're an angel...
Suddenly the whole room starts to spin and turns green.
MONA SAX
...but I couldn't have you going berserk and killing Lisa.
Max falls to the ground as everything fades to black.
INT. MAX PAYNE'S HOUSE
Max stands in his house with his suit on. The same one he wore the fateful day his wife and kid were murdered. He looks around the room everything looks blurred. Max looks at his hands and they detach and reattach from his arm. Everything has a green tint to it.
Max walks down the hallway and hears screaming. He runs up the stairs and as he runs down the hallway it gets longer and longer. He runs down the hallway as fast as he can. He turns many different times.
He runs in circles as if he was in a maze. Max finally makes it upstairs. He runs into the bathroom as he hears his wife scream for her life. As he gets to the door he flies back into the wall, shattering some of the tile. Suddenly, wooden planks cover the doorway and get nailed shut.
Max looks at a radio that is turned on.
RADIO VOICE
C'mon get him in the van....Yeah to the Hotel....Yeah the cops have to be gone.
Max looks at the radio and tries to turn the channel but he hears the sounds of a van driving down a road.
MAX PAYNE
What is going on?
RADIO VOICE
Let's go Max. Wake up. Aw screw it. He'll be dead soon anyway.
A bunch of laughter comes from out of the radio. Max looks down at his hand and sees a gun. He shoots the radio and it shatters.
Max looks up quickly and hears loud screaming from his wife Michelle. He runs out of the room and into the baby's. The hallway extends even farther than the previous one. Blood is splattered all over the Blue Skies and Clouds wallpaper. Max reaches his baby's room and sees his dead daughter on the ground.
Michelle screams even louder. Max runs into her room and sees her dead on the bed. He looks over and sees the killer's back.
MAX PAYNE
Turn around you sick bastard.
The killer turns around and looks into his own face.
PHANTOM MAX PAYNE
You did this to yourself Max. Shoulda listened to B.B. He knew what was happening. He...
MAX PAYNE
SHUT UP!
Max opens fire on himself and the body disappears in a puff of green smoke. He falls to his knees and starts to cry.
FADE OUT
INT. BASEMENT
Max suddenly gains conscience. He looks up and the camera pans out. He is sitting in a wooden chair, tied to it. In front of him is Frankie Niagara. Everything is a tad blurry.
FRANKIE NIAGRA
Max Payne...I envy your name. Pleased to meet you, I'm Frankie Niagara.
Max shakes his heads and everything focuses into view.
MAX PAYNE
Frankie "The Bat" Niagara? Niagara as in you cry a lot?
Frankie laughs as he wipes his brow. He tightens his grip on the bat and pulls it back. He swings and the bat slams against Max's head. Blood splatters. Frankie repeats this three or four times.
Max puts his head down, blood dripping from it. He breathes heavily.
FRANKIE NIAGRA
Nothing wrong with a nice laugh once in a while. Not at all. Like take me for instance.
Frankie wipes his brow with a rag.
FRANKIE NIAGRA
(Cont.)
I love cartoons. The violence in them. It's wonderful. Let's take a break. I need to take a leak, grab a cold one, and then we'll finish it off. Then it'll be check out time.
Frankie walks off up a set of stairs.
MAX PAYNE
You play, you pay you bastard.
We hear a door shut as Max is left alone in the basement all alone. He rocks back and forth in the chair. He leans back far enough and the chair breaks. The rope loosens up and he stands up. He checks his coat pockets, looking for his gun. Alas, he finds nothing. Max runs up the stairs and sees a baseball bat up against the door. Max smirks as he looks at it.
CUT TO:
INT. GARAGE
A thug holds a Beretta in his hand as he blocks the Garage entrance into Lupino's hotel. Suddenly Max walks alongside the wall so that the thug can't see him. Max pops up and swings the bat at the thug, hitting him in the head. He picks up the Beretta and walks out of the garage.
INT. LUPINO'S HOTEL
Max walks into Lupino's hotel. Over the door is police tape.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
The boys in blue had come and gone. Chalk outlines already made. Those who stayed behind are probably all dead. Only Frankie, his boys and I are here. The whole place to ourselves.
Max walks around a corner and sees a guy on the phone. He backs up so he can hear the man but is out of sight.
GUY ON PHONE
..Crazy witch. Shoulda heard her scream when the boys caught her trying to cap the Don. (Beat) The trio got her? Man that's friggin bad. (Beat) Oh shit that's worse than what Frankie's doing to this poor bastard downstairs. (pause) She's gonna take a long time to die...
Max hears noise coming from the bar and he runs towards it, realizing it's Frankie and his men. Max gets to a table in front of the bar. On top of it is a radio. Max walks up to it and turns it up louder.
RADIO ANNOUNCER
..The fact is that all of the victims in the Ragnarock shootings were known criminals. Many of them had large amounts of V inside their blood. Reliable sources say that Max Payne was also shot and killed in the shootings, although no body has been found yet.
Max flicks the radio off and walks towards the bar. On the table is a hand-written letter to Frankie from The Don.
"I want Max Payne to die like the dog he is. He must suffer and be through the same amount of pain he has put us through. Frankie I know you can handle this. You are my man..."
Max walks into the bar and inside are Frankie and his men. Max gives him a stern look. Frankie looks around at his men.
FRANKIE NIAGRA
Boys...leave me alone with Payne. I can handle him.
Max looks at the doorway he stands in and sees Frankie's bat. His name is inscribed on the side of it.
CUT TO:
Frankie's boys stand outside the bar. We hear the sound of someone being repeatedly hit with a baseball bat. The open the door and it cuts to a shot of Frankie Niagara dead, bleeding on the floor, lying in front of Max's feet. Max drops the bloody bat on the ground.
EXT. LUPINO'S HOTEL
CUT TO: Max walks out of the Hotel's back entrance. He opens a car door and gets inside.
EXT. STREET
Max drives in the car down the street and he sees a pair of Taillights behind him. The car roars in front of him and cuts him off. Max stops the car. The car that cut him off was the same one that drove in front of him when the bomb went off. He gets out of his car and sees Vladimir Lem.
He holds his hand out as if it was a gun.
VLADAMIR LEM
Bang! You're dead Max Payne.
Max walks towards Vlad.
MAX PAYNE
What's this supposed to be Cops and Robbers?
Max throws his arms out to his side shrugging his shoulders.
MAX PAYNE
(Cont.)
Look, you want something with me, get in line.
Vlad walks forward and holds out his hand telling Max to calm down.
VLADAMIR LEM
Peace, man, relax. You know you are a news item? "Armed and Dangerous". Look Max, I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse...(laughs) I've always wanted to say that.
MAX PAYNE
It's a bum rap. I've been framed.
VLADAMIR LEM
That's a moot point. I don't care what you did or did not do. I'm sure you had a good reason for doing it. Want to hear me out?
MAX PAYNE
I'm listening.
VLADAMIR LEM
Punchinello messing with V is bad for business all around, but that's not all. There's this guy who used to do jobs for me. His name's Boris Dime.
EXT. DOCKS
The camera pans on a cargo shop called "Charon".
VLADAMIR LEM (V.O.)
See Boris is the captain of this cargo ship called the "Charon". Now that bastard has moved over to the other side. Punchinello's side. His ship's loaded with the best of the best in firearms. Guns. My business.
CUT TO:
Boris Dime is inside his ship next to crates of weapons.
VLADAMIR LEM (V.O.)
If Don Punchinello gets those weapons, I have lost the war. Then you'll really have your work cut-out for you.
CUT TO:
A group of Dime's men hold very hi-tech shotguns and machine guns.
EXT. STREET
We see Vlad and his partner standing by Max again.
VLADAMIR LEM
So as you see, if you want to get to the Don you're gonna need some heavy duty equipment. I'm just the man you need to help you out. All you gotta do is get to Boris and pop two in 'em. Then just change the flag under my rule.
Vlad holds his hand out suggesting Max to shake. He looks at him seeing what his answer is. Max reaches out and shakes.
MAX PAYNE
Let's get this show on the road.
EXT. DOCKS
Max walks up to a gate by the docks. We can see the ship the "Charon" in the distance. Max walks over to a small room, where the controls for the gate are.
CUT TO
We see a guard on the inside reading a magazine and eating some noodles. The door flies open and Max shoots the guard in the head. He hits a button on the control panel and lets it open.
CUT TO
Max walks in-between some empty cargo boxes. He turns around a corner as a thug spots him. The man pulls out a shotgun. He pulls the trigger as Max dives out of the way. Max rolls and shoots the thug.
Max turns around the corner and sees two more thugs. They turn quickly and Max shoots them both. They go flying back in the air. Max turns around another corner and is almost towards the ship.
Suddenly a big fork truck comes speeding towards Max. He shoots and kills the driver but it continues to go forward. Max looks to the side and jumps inside of an open Cargo container.
The fork truck goes full speed ahead and crashes into a fence. On the other side of the fence are gasoline barrels. The fork truck punctures the barrel and gas leaks out. We see the truck start to catch on fire.
Max walks out of the Cargo container and sees the fire. He starts to walk in the other direction as it blows up behind him. He continues to walk in the other direction.
CUT TO:
INT. CHARON
Boris Dime and some of his men sit inside of the ship. They hear the explosion and immediately see it. Boris looks at his men.
BORIS DIME
Well don't just fucking stand there. Get to it.
His men run off out a door.
EXT. DOCKS
Max walks up to the ship and sees there is no way on. He looks over at a building with a window directly across from the ship.
CUT TO
INT. WAREHOUSE
The window shatters as a thug flies out of it. He lands on top of the cargo ship. Max looks out the window. He puts his gun away and takes a couple of steps back. He runs forward at full speed.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
Max jumps out of the window. He flies through the air over a big gap and into the cargo ship. He rolls as he lands and stands up when he finishes the roll.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Max pulls out his gun and walks forward towards a room on the ship.
INT. CHARON
Max walks through a door-way and sees Boris Dime holding an Uzi. He is scared.
MAX PAYNE
Boris. How's it going? You know Vladdy sent me over here on a little business, you know what that is?
Boris turns around surprised.
BORIS DIME
You! What are you doing here?
MAX PAYNE
I asked a question Boris. I'd prefer it to be answered.
BORIS DIME
Yeah I know what you are here for. (Beat) What? Is Vlad angry that I switched sides? Not my fault. Fucker was always switching sides. Working with the government I hear. Can't have someone fucking up my business. Let me guess, he sent you on a suicide mission to change some shit around. He wants you to take over my ship, is that it?
MAX PAYNE
I wouldn't say suicide mission at all. I am not done at all. I'm not ready to die yet. Not at all. I've got to get to the bottom of this.
BORIS DIME
Oh yeah I heard that. You killed your partner. Right there in cold blood at Roscoe Street Station.
The two start to circle the room as they talk to each other.
BORIS DIME
(Cont.)
Why’d you do it?
Max holds his gun up towards Boris's head.
MAX PAYNE
Listen here and listen good Dime. I did not kill Alex. He was my only good friend on the force. I was framed. You're just one of the many stops on this wicked train ride of a night. I am not afraid to get rid of you, right here and now. If I'm going down why not bring some people with me?
Boris holds his gun up too.
BORIS DIME
I don't think you have what it takes Payne. There is no way you are going to kill anyone and everyone who gets in your way.
MAX PAYNE
I lost count around 100. Go ahead. Test me Dime.
BORIS DIME
Let's just calm down.
They both put their guns down. Max quickly raises his gun and shoots Dime in the leg. He falls down from the shot. Max hides behind a table and looks over it to shoot Dime. He limps out the door as Max is left behind.
Max runs out the door and sees Dime running up a set of stairs into the control area. Max shoots at him but misses, hitting the walls and stairs. Boris falls down against the corner of the room and picks up a Grenade Launcher. He loads it by putting a grenade inside of it.
Max comes through the doorway and shoots Boris before he can get a shot off. Max is relieved that he got rid of Dime,
CUT TO:
Max stands in front of a bunch of crates filled with guns. He takes everything he needs. He throws his old Beretta away and pulls out a nice, new Desert Eagle. He also takes a shotgun and a machine gun. Max hears a voice coming from a speaker. Max picks it up.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
Dime? You there? It's Angelo. What's going on?
MAX PAYNE
Angie! Tell me, how much did Dime cost you? Better have not been much more than his name.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
Max Payne?
MAX PAYNE
Gee you catch on fast Angie.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
You're dead you little punk.
MAX PAYNE
Are you sure you're not confused with your boy Dime here? But you are right. (Pause) We should get together to talk.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
You son of a...
Max turns it off and picks up a big duffel bag. He starts piling guns into it.
EXT. DOCKS
Max walks towards Vlad, who is leaning against his car.
VLADAMIR LEM
Did you get everything you need?
Max lifts up the bag he is holding. Vlad sees it and nods. Max gets in front of him.
VLADAMIR LEM
I owe you Max Payne. Anything you need, just call.
He hands Max a business card as he shakes hands with him.
MAX PAYNE
This is my solo job. Once I get done Punchinello won't be anyone's problem.
Max picks up his bag and starts to walk to his car. Vlad puts his hand over his shoulder and they walk together.
VLADAMIR LEM
Clear as vodka. But just so you know, if you're ever in a rock and a hard place, just whistle. (Looks down at Max) This could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
Max opens his car door and throws the bag inside.
MAX PAYNE
You're really digging this big time gangster act, aren't you?
VLADAMIR LEM
You know me Max. I can't get enough of it. So where are you headed exactly?
CUT TO:
Max drives down a street and parks on the side of the road. He gets out and trudges through the blizzard.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
I got to find a way to get to Punchinello. No matter how much firepower I have, I couldn't get to him at his manor. I can only hope that he won't pass a chance to hear me beg. Say he's won.
Max walks into a phone booth and shakes the snow off of his coat. He picks up the phone and dials a number.
MAN ON PHONE (O.S.)
Hello.
MAX PAYNE
This is Max Payne. I want to cut a deal.
MAN ON PHONE (O.S.)
Max who? Payne? Is this a joke? I'll...
We hear a noise as if someone grabs the phone out of the man's hand.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
Payne! You're a dead man!
MAX PAYNE
Yeah that's what everyone's been telling me. (Beat) Look, I've got your ship and her cargo. I want to meet. No Payne, no gain. Capice?
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
...(sound of a man breathing out)you know my restaurant?
MAX PAYNE
Yeah I know it.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
One hour. Not a minute too soon or late. (Line goes dead)
Max hangs up.
FADE INTO:
EXT. RESTAURANT
Max stands in front of the run-down restaurant named "Casa Di Angelo" Max walks up to the door knocks. No answer. He looks frustrated. He knocks again. No answer. Giving up, he turns the door knob and walks in. When he enters he hears a small click. He notices a wire being pulled as he closes the door behind him.
Filled through out the room are barrels of gasoline. Max sees a flame being started from where the wire is. He quickly catches on and starts to run towards the kitchen door. As he gets half way through the main room the flame hits a knocked over gasoline barrel and causes a huge explosion.
Max turns the corner in the kitchen. The fire grows faster and faster. It roars behind Max. He makes his way towards another part of the restaurant. As he runs down a narrow hallway his feet splash in the gasoline. In the room where he is a bunch of tables and chairs block the doors. Without thinking he climbs on top of the mound. He knocks them out of the way and tries to open the door. It is locked.
Max looks around. A vent opening catches his eye. He climbs the mound and knocks out the opening. Fire starts to catch onto the tables and chairs. Max pulls himself into the vent. The fire roars below.
Max crawls through the vent, looking down every so often to see if there is a safe place for him to get to. He buts one of the openings with his guns.
We see an empty kitchen. A vent grater falls down and hits the floor. Max follows from out of the vent. When he gets down he notices boxes and boxes of gun powder. He suddenly bolts for a doorway. He goes into a basement. We see the fire reaching the gun powder. Max, knowing his time is limited, tries to find a way out.
He sees a window up by the ceiling of the bar. He runs towards it and jumps up, throwing his arms out of the window. He holds himself up into the air and wiggles his way through.
The restaurant's roof explodes. Max cringes from the blast. He walks out into the street and sees Vlad's car. It stops in front of him. The backseat window rolls down. Vlad peers out from it.
VLADAMIR LEM
Max...we saw your smoke signals from further away.
INT. VLAD's CAR
Max closes the door as he gets in next to Vlad.
VLADAMIR LEM
We'll drop you off at Punchinello's manor.
MAX PAYNE
Sounds good to me.
Vlad looks at Max.
VLADAMIR LEM
When this is all said and done, look me up. (Beat) I could use a professional like you (smiles).
Max grins.
MAX PAYNE
Sounds good to me.
EXT. PUNCHINELLO MANOR
Max stands outside of the manor with his Desert Eagle in his hand. He runs up and hides behind a bush. He looks around.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Punchinello wanted Payne. He'd get pain.
Max runs around towards the back. He rolls under the window.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
(Cont.)
There were no rules in this situation. It wasn't about how smart I was or how strong.
He makes a dash towards the back basement door.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
(Cont.)
It was chaos and luck. Anyone who thought different was a damned fool.
Max gets to the door and opens it. Inside are dead bodies everywhere.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Someone had left the door open and got rid of all the guards. (Beat) My money's on Mona.
Max closes the door behind him.
MAX PAYNE (V.O)
(Cont.)
No one here is getting out alive.

Max walks up the basement stairs into the manor. The room is rustic but beautiful. It brightly shines as the whole room is lit. Max cocks his gun and gets ready. Three men walk down the stairs all holding guns in their hands. The man in the center motions so that the two men go separate ways into different rooms. The man in the looks sternly at Max. He breathes heavily, concentrating at his target down the stairs. He's wearing a really nice black suit.
VINCE MUGNAIO
Max Payne...didn't think you'd still be alive after what happened at the restaurant.
MAX PAYNE
Yeah funny thing about that. Looks like someone set it on fire. (Quick Pause) Although you wouldn't know too much about that, would you?
VINCE MUGNAIO
(shrugging shoulders) Not a thing. (grins)
Vince walks up to Max and throws his arm around his shoulders.
VINCE MUGNAIO
C'mon. Let's take a walk.
The two walk towards a kitchen.
CUT TO
They enter the kitchen. In the center of the room is a chair. Catching on, Max struggles but it's too late. Vince wraps around his neck tightly and throws him in the chair. One of the three men from before ties him up against the chair.
Vince takes off his suit coat. Around his shoulder is a gun holster. He puts his gun inside of it and looks at Max.
VINCE MUGNAIO
We're gonna have a blast.
The other man of the trio comes through the door. He laughs at Max. In his hand is a gallon of gasoline. The man holding the gasoline's name is Joe Salem. The other man is Pilate Providence. Vince takes the gallon of gasoline and sets it on the table. They duck tape Max's mouth as he struggles.
VINCE MUGNAIO
So Max...you had it all. Until someone took it away. Now nothing can stop you until you get what you want.
Max stares at him. Beads of sweat roll down his face.
VINCE MUGNAIO
(Cont.)
FUCK THAT! I mean come on. How many times have we heard that same old sob story.
We hear a noise from a door behind Max. Two thugs hold carry a black body bag. We see the head and it vaguely looks like someone we know. Vince looks at them.
VINCE MUGNAIO
Which one?
THUG #2
Don't know. We'll find out soon enough. The other is bound to show up anytime.
VINCE MUGNAIO
(laughs) (looks at Max) Guess that's another bitch of yours killed.
Max shakes in the chair angrily. He looks at the body bag realizing what had just happened. Vince punches him in the face.
VINCE MUGNAIO
Shut up you fucking pig. You've caused enough damage to us. No more.
Vince grabs the gallon of gasoline. He pours it over Max's head. Max tries to get out of the chair but it is too stable. Vince looks at Joe.
VINCE MUGNAIO
Hey, Joe.
Joe looks up, his eyes peering above his sunglasses.
VINCE MUGNAIO
(Cont.)
Go see if the Don wants any part f this.
Joe walks over to an intercom. He presses a button.
JOE SALEM
Don Angelo. We're roasting the pig. Vince wants to know if you wanna see it.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
Just get it over with you idiots.
Joe looks at Vince and he nods in response. He goes over to a table to get some matches. He looks down and sees some Tarot Cards. A "Tower", "The Devil" and "Death". He smiles and picks them up.
VINCE MUGNAIO
Everyone. Out.
JOE SALEM
But...
VINCE MUGNAIO
Leave. Now.
They follow orders and leave out the backdoor.
VINCE MUGNAIO
Lisa, for some reason, liked these a lot. See I think she was leaving you a message. See the tower is obviously the mansion. (switches card) The Devil is the Don. (switches card) This...death.
Vince looks at Max strongly.
VINCE MUGNAIO
(Cont.)
Death...I'm pretty sure you can figure that one out for yourself.
He lights the match and stands about a foot away. Max glances down his coat, remembering his gun. As Vince starts to throw it on Max, he leaps forward. The match goes over his head. Max is still bound to the chair as he tackles Vince. One of the legs on the chairs breaks off as Max lands. He throws himself back and breaks the chair.
Suddenly Max stands up and takes his gun out. Vince tries to get up but Max stomps on his face. He takes the duck tape off of his mouth and pulls out his gun.
MAX PAYNE
I am death.
He pulls his trigger and the bullet hits Vince in the face. Max grabs Vince's gun and walks out the backdoor, into the dining room. Before he goes through the door he sees the power switches. Quickly, he runs back and grabs the matches. He brushes off the gasoline into a cup and turns off the power.
CUT TO:
Four men are sitting in the dining room as the lights suddenly go out. We hear a noise as the door opens. We hear a splash on the table. The men have no clue what is going on. A match strikes and the table is suddenly lit on fire. All of the men's guns are still on the table. We see Max holding out both Desert Eagles. He shoots Joe Salem and Pilate first. The other two thugs try and grab their guns from the table. Max shoots one of the men.
The last guy gets set on fire from the table. He screams and jumps out the window.
Max walks into the main room and heads up stairs.
He walks down a hallway as a phone rings. Max picks it up.
ALFRED WODEN (O.S.)
Max Payne?
MAX PAYNE
Talk to me.
ALFRED WODEN (O.S.)
Alfred Woden. (Beat) You've got company. An armored helicopter just landed on the manor grounds. You must hurry.
MAX PAYNE
The more the merrier.
The phone line goes dead and Max hangs it up. He walks towards a door. There is a soft voice coming from a room at the end of the hallway. As Max gets nearer we can make out what he says.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO (O.S.)
...Outside my door...hurry. He's coming for me...come on! Please...
Max kicks the door open and the lock shatters off. Max holds his Desert Eagle out in his hand, aiming at Don Angelo. He sits at his desk. He quickly throws the phone down and collects himself, no longer weeping. Max puts his gun against the Don's forehead. Suddenly, he starts to cry.
DON ANGELO PUNCHINELLO
No, wait! I was just doin' what I was told, couldn't refuse. She's someone high up in the government somewhere, I think, I don't really know. Please...
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
He was trying to buy more sand for his hourglass.
Max takes his gun off of the Don's head. *Sigh*
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
I wasn't selling any.
In one smooth quick motion Max flings his gun back up in the air and shoots.
CUT TO:
We see the main room again. There is a knock on the door. All of a sudden the door bursts open. A bunch of men in suits walk in. They all hold M16's. In the middle of all of them is Nicole Horne. She holds an Uzi in her hand and walks up towards the stairs.
CUT TO: Max hears everything going on downstairs. He looks out the door and sees the group coming for him.
NICOLE HORNE
Max Payne...how sweet that you made it this far with your little killing spree.
She reaches inside her jacket and pulls out a green syringe. She holds it up towards Max. As he backs away the suits grab him by the arms and restrain him.
NICOLE HORNE
Be a good boy now.
Nicole rips open his button down shirt, under his leather jacket, and injects it into his chest. The suits let him go.
MAX PAYNE (V.O)
Sooner or later everything catches up with you. You'd find out that lady luck was really a hooker, and you were fresh out of cash.
Max falls to the ground and we hear a thud as he hits. Nicole and her men start to walk out.
NICOLE HORNE
We are done here. Take me to Cold Steel gentlemen.
As the she walks out of the room everything goes fuzzy. Fade to black.
The room fades back in, everything has a green tint to it as before. Max looks around the room. The phone rings and Max picks it up.
MAX PAYNE
Hello?
VOICE
...Don't lose it! It's Valkyr, the drug! Snap out of it. Try and remember what happened...
The voice fades as Max looks at the phone weird. He drops it and takes a look at the door. He walks through it.
CUT TO:
INT. MAX PAYNE'S HOUSE
Max walks into his living room. His wife walks up to another him.
MICHELE PAYNE
Max, something happened at the office today. A strange memo about Vikings or something.
The other Max hugs her.
OTHER MAX PAYNE
Honey, I've got to run, you can tell it all to me this evening.
MICHELE PAYNE
Have a nice day honey...
The scene fades out.
Fade into the bedroom. Michelle stands in front of a man with a gun. Max stands behind him. He grabs him by the shoulder and spins him around. He sees himself. The real Max freaks out and falls to the ground.
Fade Out
EXT. STREET
We see Max lying on a street. He opens his eyes and shakes his head. He coughs and throws up on the street. He just lived through an overdose.
NICOLE HORNE (V.O.)
Take me to Cold Steel.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
That's the only lead I had.
Max gets up.
CUT TO
Max walks up to a car and breaks into it. He starts the car and drives off.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
There's a Cold Steel Foundry about a half a mile out of town.
Max pulls up to the foundry and gets out. He walks up towards it. He crouches stealthily along the side of the building, out of the way.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
The bad trip had put me in a crazy mood, adrenaline pumping through my aching veins.
He runs up to a pipe and jumps onto it, climbing up the side of it. He reaches the rooftop and stands up straight.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Staggering on the mill rooftop in ice and snow and wild wind, I was a ninja, my kung-fu was strong.
Max looks down at a skylight. Inside the building are a group of men. He knows what he must do to get in, but he is weary.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
I wasn't kidding anyone. At best I was Superman on kryptonite, about ready to fall to the ground.
Max pulls out his Desert Eagle and gets ready. He backs up against the wall and starts to run. He dives off of the rooftop and crashes into the window.
He lands on top of a bunch of crates. He breaks through them and hits the ground with a thud. The guards look at the mess and pull out their guns. One of them runs over to a wall and presses an alarm. A loud wailing noise drowns out everything.
Max starts to get up and sees the guards leaning closer. Max quickly stands up and races away from them. They start to shoot at Max. Max finds a doorway and leaps into it. He kicks the door closed as he lands.
The guards shoot at the windows but they do not shatter as the glass is very strong. Max sees an elevator off towards the back of the room. He runs towards it and gets inside.
CUT TO
Max is on a lower level and gets off of the elevator. A radio plays in the background as Max looks around what looks like an office.
RADIO ANNOUNCER
...Life-threatening weather conditions...A record-breaking killer storm...in the city's history...forecast shows...bad weather is going to continue throughout...
Max walks away from the radio and sees a walkie talkie lying on a desk. There is a faint sound coming from it. Max turns it up so he can hear it.
MALE VOICE
...perimeter breached. The facility has been compromised. Initiate Operation: Dead Eyes.
Max sees another elevator and walks up to it. This one is much nicer. He walks into the narrow area and presses a button. The doors slam shut.
CUT TO:
*Bing!* the doors open as Max walks out. He enters a big silver room. On the floor is a military looking symbol. Max thinks he knows what it is. A flash of the Valkyr symbol shows up over it. The two are almost identical. The military one is golden and has an eagle behind it.
Max walks through a hallway into a room. Inside is a computer. He presses the spacebar and the screen comes up. "TOP SECRET: PROJECT VALHALLA" Max starts to read off of the screen.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
"Top Secret. Project Valhalla. US Army. Yggdrasil Network. Valhalla: The otherworldly place in Norse mythology where the bravest heroes spent their afterlife feasting and fighting forever, their wounds miracuously healed night after night. Valkyr: The maidens who chose the most courageous Viking warriors and carried them to Valhalla. 2001. The research objective is to create a chemical substance to enhance the stamina and morale of troops. 2005. Results Unsatisfactory. Project Cancelled.
Max stares at the screen as he starts to piece together what happened.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
(Cont.)
Someone had decided to continue the sick experiment unauthorized.
Max scrolls down and continues reading.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
(Cont.)
Project compromised. Data leak, fix the damage by any means necessary. Security clearance red, authorized by the project lead. Field-Test, double the dosage for all the remaining test subjects, observe and record the subject’s behavior in an urban setting. Drop of point at...
Max stops reading. He stares in disbelief.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
The drop-off point was located at my address. File's dated three years ago.
Max gets up and walks away from the computer. He shakes his head multiple times. When he reaches a turn in the hallway some of the guards are there, holding guns at Max. He quickly doubles back down the hallway, escaping. The guard picks up his walkie talkie.
GUARD
Commence self destruct.
The guard pushes a button on the wall and a gate goes down. They walk back towards the stairs and to an exit.
CUT TO
Max looks around for a way to get out. He sees goes through a door and looks up a set of stairs. A timer on the wall counts down until the explosion. Max runs up the stairs as fast as he can. He keeps running until the time hits :03. He looks out the window next to him and without thinking he jumps out.
As he hits the ground the building explodes. Flames rush over Max. He stumbles trying to not get caught on fire. Max walks away from the flames.
He walks off into the night.
CUT TO BLACK
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Everything pieced together now like a jigsaw puzzle. The Project-Valhalla test subjects had killed my loved ones. The rest was all simple body count math. The finger was pointed at one person...
CUT TO:
Nicole Horne in her office. She sits down at her desk. She thinks she has gotten away with it all.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
(Cont.)
Ms. Valkyr herself.
CUT TO:
INT. MAX'S APARTMENT
Max walks through the door and takes off his coat. He sets down his gun and sits on his bed.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
I haven't slept in ages.
CUT TO:
Max lies down in his bed for the first time in a long time. His phone rings. Max is too far in his slumber to answer. It goes to the voicemail.
B.B. (OFF SCREEN)
Hey Max, this is B.B. What the hell happened at Roscoe Street? Maxey, I'm gonna go out on a limb here. We need to talk. We need to talk this through and come up with a plan. 2:30 AM. Choir Communications' Garage.
EXT. CHOIR COMMUNICATIONS GARAGE
Max walks towards B.B. He wears a black tailored suit and matching sunglasses. His blonde hair is greased back and he has a smug grin on his face.
B.B.
Maxey!
Max walks up to him and gets in his face.
MAX PAYNE
What the hell does B.B. stand for anyway? Backstabbing bastard?
B.B.
Hey, hey, calm down Max.
He reaches in inside of his coat to grab something. Max gets uneasy and motions for his gun. B.B. pulls out a cigar.
B.B.
C'mon Max. Have a cigar.
Max rests his hand again.
MAX PAYNE
I don't smoke.
B.B. smiles at Max and puts the cigar away.
B.B.
Max, you have no idea how big this is. You have no idea...
Max leans in and points his finger right at B.B.'s face.
MAX PAYNE
I think I do. You're a bribe-taking bent cop who sold out my partner. Those mobsters in the subway were a dead giveaway, hard to miss.
B.B. takes off his sunglasses and puts them inside his jacket. He rubs his temples as he shakes his head.
B.B.
Max, I didn't sell him out. Trust me...
MAX PAYNE
I bet this was exactly how it was with Alex. All up close and personal.
B.B.
Max...you cannot win this one.
A pair of lights appears behind Max. They appear to be headlights from a van behind B.B. The snow grows heavier.
MAX PAYNE
No, but I sure as hell can make sure none of you do.
The van behind B.B. starts to take off. B.B. reaches inside his coat and pulls out a gun. The handle is golden and the rest of it is very metallic. Max reaches for a Beretta inside his coat. The van roars ahead. It splits in-between B.B. and Max. B.B. rolls backwards as Max dodges the van.
B.B. sees Max and fires shots off at him. Max runs out of the way, behind a car. Max fires off shots at B.B. B.B. runs off down the same way the van went. Max follows closely behind. As B.B. makes his way around a corner he takes cover and fires off shots at Max.
Max halts and takes cover behind a car. As B.B. reloads his gun Max notices a fire extinguisher. Max shoots it as B.B. leans around the corner. The contents inside blind him as they spurt out.
Max takes this opportunity to make his move. He runs down the pavement down by B.B. He shoots him right in the chest. B.B. falls backwards and hits the ground. His blood forms a puddle around his body. Max looks down at the body and then walks away.
As he makes his way towards an elevator a phone rings. Max walks over and picks it up.
MAX PAYNE
Yeah?
ALFRED WODEN (O.S.)
Max Payne?
MAX PAYNE
Whatever does it for you.
ALFRED WODEN
Good. This is Alfred Woden speaking. I can give you the name of your enemy. Come to the Asgard building immediately. We are expecting you.
The line goes dead and Max looks at the phone, confused.
INT. ASGARD BUILDING
Max opens the main door and inside is Alfred Woden, waiting for him on the main steps. He wears wire-frame glasses. One of the lenses is pitch black, serving as an eye patch.
ALFRED WODEN
Mr. Payne. (nods) Let's go inside. The others are anxious to begin.
MAX PAYNE
The others?
ALFRED WODEN
Despite the general misconception, this building actually predates the city hall building by two years, being the oldest municipal building still in use at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Max looks around at how old everything is.
MAX PAYNE
Heh, no kidding.
CUT TO:
Max and Alfred walk into a boardroom of sorts. A group of men are sitting down at an oval table.
ALFRED WODEN
Max Payne, I'd like to introduce you to my colleagues in what we call The Inner Circle.
He motions at all of the men in front of them.
MAX PAYNE
Someone's been watching too much X-Files.
ALFRED WODEN
You have seen the files on Project Valhalla. We can fill the gaps, provide you with the information missing from those files. We were all involved in the early stages of that project during the Gulf War.
MAX PAYNE
What's the catch?
Max grins at Alfred.
ALFRED WODEN
We would very much like to blow this thing wide open. But alas, our hands are tied.
Alfred and Max both sit down at the table. One of the men on the end passes a folder down the row to Alfred. He opens it. Inside is a picture of Nicole Horne.
ALFRED WODEN
Her name is Nicole Horne. She was the key figure in Project Valhalla.
He slides the picture in front of Max.
ALFRED WODEN
(Cont.)
When the funding was discontinued, she simply refused to quit. She knew exactly what she had in her hands. Nicole Horne is head of the Aesir Corporation. She has more than half the city in her pocket.
Alfred looks at Max dead in the eyes.
ALFRED WODEN
(Cont.)
This must be kept under wraps. If you try and go public with this, we will deny any relations or knowledge of it. We need you...to take her out. Afterwards we can protect you, make all of the charges go away.
We hear a loud noise from a different area of the building.
CUT TO:
A group of men in suits carrying gun run through the hallways. They are making their way towards Max and the Inner Circle.
CUT TO:
Alfred looks around unsteadily.
ALFRED WODEN
Max, you must get out of here now.
Max and Alfred stand up and he motions him towards the door. They open the door and they can see the men in suits running up a small set of stairs.
Alfred shuts the door and pulls Max backwards.
MAX PAYNE
How am I supposed to get out?
Alfred looks off to the side at something we cannot see.
ALFRED WODEN
Thankfully it's only a one story fall.
WUICK-CUT TO:
EXT. ASGARD BUILDING
A window crashes and breaks as Max flies through it. He gets towards the ground and rolls to break his fall. Max quickly gets up and sneaks away as gunshots come from the room.
Max runs up to a window and opens it. He climbs through.
INT. ASGARD BUILDING
Max enters a Security Control Room. He looks at all of the different rooms. He finds the Inner Circle room on a screen. Inside he sees a group of dead bodies. One man is left standing. Alfred Woden stands there, alive, holding a gun in his hand. He puts it in his coat pocket and walks out of the room.
EXT. STREETS
The snow is harder than it has ever been. It rages on as Max walks the street. Max opens the back door of the stolen wheels he had parked a block or two away. He pulls a big black bag and throws it in the front. He gets into the driver seat.
INT. CAR
Max starts the car and starts to drive.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
Mine plan wasn't the most original one. An eye for an eye, the first principal for revenge, still going strong. The cardinal rule in going after someone with an intention to kill was to not make it personal. Mine was.
He parks in front of the Aesir Corporation building. He reaches inside his black bag and pulls out another Beretta. He takes both of them and reloads them both. He takes some extra ammo for both and puts them in his pocket. He puts them in holsters under his jacket. He also pulls a couple grenades out of his bag and puts them in a coat pocket. The last thing inside his bag is a picture of him and Michelle. He stares at it for awhile.
He sets the picture down and gets out.
INT. AESIR CORPORATION
Max walks through the front door of the building. He walks through the metal detector goes off. Suddenly a man comes walking up by Max. He holds his gun right at him.
SECURITY GUARD #2
You are not allowed access to this building sir, sorry.
Max continues to walk forward.
SECURITY GUARD #2
Sir! You are not allowed access here at this...
The man is cut-off as Max punches him right in the face. The man falls on the ground and picks up his walkie talkie.
SECURITY GUARD #2
Ms. Horne, we have an intruder. Do you...
NICOLE HORNE (O.S.)
I can see him on my screen. Take him out.
SECURITY GUARD #2
Yes mam.
The security guard gets a grip on his gun and gets ready to shoot at Max. Max quickly turns around and grabs his Beretta. He shoots the security guard in the head. Blood splatters all over the floor. Max runs up a set of stairs onto the next level. He walks in a small lobby and hears a *ping* from the elevator. He turns and aims his gun at the opening. Inside is Mona Sax, also holding her gun out.
MONA SAX
Max, we gotta stop meeting like this.
MAX PAYNE
Mona. Looking good.
A loudspeaker tunes in from above.
NICOLE HORNE (O.S.)
It'll be a cold day in hell before I'll let a NARC cop stop me. Ms. Sax, do your job.
They keep their guns pointed at each other.
MONA SAX
Relax Max, you're a nice guy. I don't kill nice guys.
She lowers her gun.
MAX PAYNE
You're not bad yourself.
Max does the same.
MONA SAX
It was different when Horne wanted Punchinello dead, to cut her ties to the mafia. He deserved to die.
MAX PAYNE
Same goes with her; she's the bad guy here.
MONA SAX
All depends on which side you're playing for.
MAX PAYNE
And which side would you be on Mona?
Mona smiles and starts to say something but gets cut off by a bullet shot at Max.
MONA SAX
MAX!
She knocks him out of the way. The bullet intended for Max hits her in the head. Blood spurts out the back of her head, hitting the elevator wall.
Max whips out his other Beretta and opens fire on the man who shot at him. The elevator door closes as Max kills the man. He pounds on it.
MAX PAYNE
Mona!
He presses the up button rapidly. When the doors open blood is all over, but no Mona. He gets in and goes up. The loudspeaker chimes in again.
NICOLE HORNE (O.S.)
Goddammit, you do your job and kill Max Payne.
Max smirks and reloads both of his guns. The elevator door opens and 5 men hold machine guns at Max. He smiles and rolls out of the elevator, shooting at all of them. One gets hit and falls backwards. The other 4 relentlessly shoot at him.
Max remembers his grenades. He takes one out of his pocket, tears off the pin and launches it at them. It hits and they start to run but are too late. The grenade explodes knocking them every which way.
Max walks into the next room. The room is empty and silent. Mechanical blinds start to open themselves off at the big window off to the side.
A helicopter is revealed behind the shutters. The pilot notices Max and shouts to someone behind him. A appears at the opening by the side and pulls a chain gun with him. Max takes off for the door across the large room.
The man stars to shoot at Max.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
The bullets hit everything in the room. The couch stuffing flies in the air. The marble floors get destroyed. Max keeps running forward.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Max opens the door for the next room. He looks around for where to go next and notices that there is another tower. He is in the wrong one. He runs for an elevator. When getting in he notices that it is on the outside of the building. The helicopter flies around and sees him. Max presses the down button as fast as he can. The elevator doors close but it goes nowhere. He looks down and sees anther elevator car going to the other tower. Max shoots his window out and gets ready to jump.
EFFECT: SLOW MOTION
Max jumps in the air and goes above the other elevator. The helicopter shoots at him. Max shoots his gun at the top of the elevator, eliminating the glass. He lands inside of the elevator.
EFFECT: NORMAL
Max pushes the up button and it starts to go up. The elevator follows him all the way up. It gets to the top floor and Max quickly gets out.
He sees a room labeled "Presidential Suite". He walks towards it slowly. He knows this is it. He opens the door and looks across at Nicole Horne. She looks at him with fierce eyes. Then, she claps.
NICOLE HORNE
Very good Mr. Payne. Very good.
He walks closer to her.
NICOLE HORNE
(Cont.)
So what is it that you want? Redemption? Your wife back?
MAX PAYNE
Don't.
NICOLE HORNE
(Cont.)
I suppose that's a touchy subject. Too bad the stupid bitch stuck her nose in my business.
MAX PAYNE
Don't you dare.
NICOLE HORNE
(Cont.)
Having her killed was the only rational situation. I'm glad we hit the right house that day. Wouldn't have mattered though.
Max stops dead in his tracks. Nicole looks at him awkwardly.
NICOLE HORNE
(Cont.)
What? You want me to come out and say it? If you're looking for sorry or some other form of apology you can walk right out that door.
Off in the distance sirens can be heard.
NICOLE HORNE
(Cont.)
It's ridiculous how far you got. Good thing they'll be here soon.
Nicole pushes a button under her desk.
NICOLE HORNE
(Cont.)
Any last words Mr. Payne?
MAX PAYNE
I'll see you in hell.
The shutters next to him open and the helicopter is there again. It shoots at Max. Nicole runs towards the wall next to her. It opens and leads to a stairway on the roof. Max dodges the bullets and follows. Nicole is all the way at the top while Max is at the bottom. He shoots at her but misses. She runs through a clear doorway and locks it behind her. She is on another side of the roof.
Max sees the helicopter try to land on the platform but can't because of the severe wind and snow. It is blinding. Max runs over to the other side and sees a large Radio tower on top of the roof. He sees the wires that hold it up and good idea. Against a wall is a sniper rifle. He picks it up and shoots the first wire.
The helicopter starts to land. Max leans so he can shoot the other one. He does and the tower starts to lean towards Nicole and the helicopter.
The helicopter lands and Nicole gets inside. Max reaches in his pocket for his grenade. He pulls off the pin and throws it at the tower. Right as it hits the tower it blows up. The tower knocks over and lands right on top of the helicopter. It explodes.
The platform it is on breaks off the tower and falls towards the ground. They both hit the ground and explode. Max walks through the bridge connecting the towers. He walks over to where Nicole was as it is now unlocked.
Max looks down at the wreckage.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger. And then it was all over. The storm seemed to lose its frenzy. The ragged clouds gave way to the stars above.
The snow seems to die. Everything is calmed.
The other SWAT officers come up behind him. They faintly shout out commands at Max. They put the handcuffs on him and walk him down the stairs.
EXT. AESIR CORPORATION
The SWAT officer escorts Max out of the building. Jim Bravura walks through the crowd of people and reporters.
JIM BRAVURA
(Looks at Max)
You gave us one hell of a ride. Take him to central booking.
As Max is put into the car he sees Alfred Woden in the crowd. Alfred grins at Max. Max sits down inside in the car and smirks too.
MAX PAYNE (V.O.)
All was right in the world.
Max grins.
"Karma Police" by Radiohead starts to play.
