The doors swing open as we are taken into The Blue Pad as a couple walk out. The room is filled with cigarette smoke, suits range from bright orange to pale red, the dresses range from bright yellow to hardly being a dress at all. On the stage, infront of a skinny looking fellow with exotic orange hair playing the piano is Breathless Mahoney. He short blonde wrap stops at her sapphire earrings. Red lips match her red dress which stops about half way to her knee. She grabs ahold of the microphone as the men begin to howl like dogs and there dates just get a tighter grip on their arms. She begins to sing Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable”, adding a seductive tone to it-
Breathless Mahoney- (Singing)
Unforgettable
That’s what you are
Unforgettable
No near or far
Like a song of love
That clings to me
How the though of you does things to me
Never before
Has someone been more...
-As she continues to sing, we follow a man who’s just gotten up from his chair and is making his way toward a door near the stage. His combed back light orange hair rests on the blood colored coat with thin black stripes. He goes through the door and begins to head up a series of stairs-
Breathless Mahoney- (Off Screen, Singing)
Unforgettable
In every way
And forever more
That’s how you’ll stay
That’s why darling
It’s incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable...
Two
-He enters a door and the music has faded away. The room is centered around a table and around this table are three men. Flattop: sporting a purple suit, his head is completely flat with his wriggly red head going in all directions. Little Face: a enormous man with a face that hardly covers the rest of his head, his large body is covered with a massive green trench coat and a matching top hat. Lips: his lips hang below his chin, glossy brown hair and a purple coat wrapped around his shockingly thin body. The man we’ve been following takes a seat and speaks-
Big Boy Caprice-
Alright fellas, glad to finally sit down with you out of a court room.
-Caprice has a strikingly handsome face with the exception of the “ass chin”-
Big Boy Caprice-
Of course, thanks to Lips for letting us use his joint.
Lips-
No problem Caprice.
Big Boy Caprice-
Now, I’m not here to settle this war, we all know it’s going on till we are all dead.
Little Face-
Of course.
Big Boy Caprice-
Not here to ask for us to band together.
Flattop-
Why would you?
Big Boy Caprice-
But I’m here to see if we can make this easier for us.
Lips & Little Face & Flattop-
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
Big Boy Caprice-
Calm down boys, calm down. I’m of course talking about someone who is a pain to all of us. I’m talking about the righteous, good for everything pretty boy that wants us ALL behind bars, I’m talking about Dick Tracy.
Lips-
Dick Tracy is a problem.
Flattop-
He’s got four of my men in the slammer, one of them is my brother, one of them is my mother.
Big Boy Caprice-
Which one is that?
Flattop-
Same one.
-Caprice looks around the room in a moment of awkward silence. Little Face lights up a cigar and sticks it in his mouth-
Little Face-
So, what are we going to do about it?
Lips-
Yeah Caprice, what we gonna do about it?
Flattop-
Yeah, what are we a-gonna do about it?
Lips-
Shut up, I already said that.
Big Boy Caprice-
We are going to kill Dick Tracy.
Flattop-
I already tried that.
Big Boy Caprice-
And?
Flattop-
He’s still around, right?
Big Boy Caprice-
COME ON GUYS!
-Caprice waves around his hands violently-
Big Boy Caprice-
He’s only a man. He can be killed!
Lips-
Flattop already tried it!
Big Boy Caprice-
We can do it. I CAN DO IT!
-Big Boy puts a shotgun, from under the table, onto the table. Flattop quickly grabs the barrel and tightly holds onto it-
Flattop-
I can do this.
Big Boy Caprice-
That’s the spirit.
Lips-
But I thought Flattop already tried to kill Tracy!
Flattop-
I saw a bullet go straight through that hat! Man still stood!
Big Boy Caprice-
You know the hat doesn’t cover his entire head.
-Flattop takes a moment to think and finally understands-
Flattop-
Dear god! You’re right Caprice!
-Caprice shakes his head-
Big Boy Caprice-
Go get him.
-Flattop, with shotgun in hand, runs out of the door-
Big Boy Caprice-
Lips, Little Face, round your men up, tell them all that Tracy has to go down. Then we can go back to killing eachother.
Lips-
Will do so.
Little Face-
I sure will Big Boy.
-Caprice shakes Lips’ hand and pats Little Face on his large back as they leave. Lips stays, he walks over to the window to see Little Face squishing into his white Oldsmobile. Big Boy Caprice walks across the street to get into his red Oldsmobile. They both drive off. Lips pulls out a bottle of vodka from a large brown drawer across the room and takes a few chugs from his massive lips, wetting them well-
Lips-
MUMBLES!
-A chubby man in a red vest with light purple suit pants along with a yellow polka dotted red shirt walks in the room. His face is slacked and his speech is mostly mumbles-
Mumbles-
Yes?
Lips-
I need you to get ahold of Dick Tracy for me, alright?
Mumbles-
Sure thing boss!
-Mumbles walks out of the room, bumbling. Lips smiles but it’s hard to tell. Cut to the skyline again. The moon just looks brighter and now stars begin to gleam from inside the green fog. In an alleyway, a woman in a fur coat and a fur hat takes a walk, her curly dark hair going down to her shoulders, holding a purse. In a quick pace, a dumpster opens along with a mugger in a raggedy brown suit and with a bad shave pulls out a knife as he grabs the woman by the front, pressing her against the wall-
Mugger-
The money, give me all the money!
Woman-
Please! Please! I have no money!
-The Mugger laughs hysterical and just tightens his grip around her neck-
Mugger-
Money, money, money, that’s all I want!
-She screams, he starts to press the knife against her cheek. A drop of blood forms-
Mugger-
I’m not kidding sweet-cheeks!
Dick Tracy- (Off screen)
Neither am I punk.
-The mugger turns to see Dick Tracy. Wearing his glorious banana raincoat and matching fedora. The black suit underneath can be seen along with the bright red tie held by undershirt’s white collar. The shoes, shiny and black, touch the wet concrete. He smiles his handsome smile that suits his handsome face-
Mugger-
Oh Cow-Knockers!
-The Mugger drops both the woman and the knife as he raises his fists-
Mugger-
I-I.. I can take y-you!
-Tracy pulls out his gun and points it straight at the mugger-
Dick Tracy-
Are you sure about that?
-The Mugger questions this for a second but quickly darts off, Dick Tracy is no slow-poke and quickly chases after him. They run from alleyway to alleyway, each one equally covered in trash and bums; eventually the Mugger meets a brick wall in bright red. He starts hammering at it with his fists. After a few seconds of tears, he turns around to see no one in sight, relief flows through him-
Mugger-
Thank God, I lost him.
-A click noise is heard, the Mugger lifts up his hands to see that he has been handcuffed. He slowly turns around to see Dick Tracy, in the flesh-
Dick Tracy-
Did you really think he could get away from me?
-The mugger frowns, Dick Tracy begins to lead him to his police car as we zoom out to the skyline, the green fog is now absent-
“Dick Tracy”
-Cut to the Police Station, Dick Tracy walks in as phones go off and officers quickly answer them, he enters a door that reads his name-
Voice-
Oh Dick.
-Someone sits in his chair, Dick Tracy takes a defensive stance, always prepared-
Voice-
Where were you?
-The chair turns around to reveal Tess Trueheart. Her gorgeous red hair complements the black dress under the black coat. She smiles-
Dick Tracy-
I was at work you know.
Tess Trueheart-
I do? I mean, is it so wrong for a girl to wonder where her date went when he left and promised to be right back?
-A quick flash shows us Tess Trueheart and Dick Tracy at a opera house seeing a lush production of “Phantom of the Opera”. Tracy’s slick black radio watch goes off-
Commissioner- (Radio Watch)
Calling Dick Tracy! Calling Dick Tracy! We got a report of a mugging!
-Tracy quickly turns to Tess-
Dick Tracy-
I’ll be back, promise.
-She just rolls her eyes as he makes his way out. We return to Dick’s office-
Dick Tracy-
I’m sorry Tess-
Tess Trueheart-
-Dick! You know this isn’t the first time this has happened! Do you honestly expect me to keep up with this?
-Dick closes his door-
Dick Tracy-
Listen Tess, I have a duty.
Tess Trueheart-
Dick, I know this but your job just gets in the way of everything. Remember that night at Rafael’s Diner?
Dick Tracy-
Huh-uh.
Tess Trueheart-
That’s cause Caprice robbed a bank and you just had to go. The Station has other men you know.
Dick Tracy-
If this is about Caprice, let me tell you, it won’t be long till that man is in a cell, trust me on that.
Tess Trueheart-
How could I trust you on that when I can barely trust you to eat breakfast with me?
Dick Tracy-
Tess, I love you but I have to protect this city!
Tess Trueheart-
Sometimes I think you love this city more then me.
Dick Tracy-
What will it take to-
Tess Trueheart-
Dick. I need a reminder.
Dick Tracy-
Of what?
Tess Trueheart-
Oh boy! I need a reminder that you still care about me!
Dick Tracy-
Alright, how about Rafael’s Diner tonight? Eight.
Tess Trueheart-
No running off into the night?
Dick Tracy-
I’ll leave the watch at home.
Tess Trueheart-
Promise?
-Dick grabs ahold of her hand-
Dick Tracy-
Promise.
-Tess smiles. Dick leans down to kiss her on the cheek and does this successfully. She walks out just as the Commissioner, in his blue coat with it’s green stripes and his thick mustache and bald head walks in. DA Fletcher, a fit man with straight blonde hair and a full on white suit and black tie, follows the Commissioner in to Tracy’s office-
Commissioner-
Tracy, this is District Attorney William Fletcher.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, I’ve seen your photo quite often in the paper.
DA Fletcher-
Same for you Tracy.
-The men give eachother firm handshakes-
Commissioner-
Glad I could get you two heroes finally together.
Dick Tracy-
What’s the occasion Commissioner?
Commissioner-
Glad you asked Dick, tell ‘em Fletch.
DA Fletcher-
Well, we got ourselves some warrants.
Commissioner-
Some we’ve been wanting for quite some time.
Dick Tracy-
Well tell me, I’m as excited as a boy at Christmas.
DA Fletcher-
Ever heard of “The Blue Pad”?
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, run by Lips, one of the heads of the gangs. Him and Flattop along with Little Face and of course, Big Boy Caprice, been trying to get them for years.
DA Fletcher-
Well, we might have Lips by tonight.
Dick Tracy-
Know anything I don’t?
DA Fletcher-
Well-
Commissioner-
-Well Dick, we got proof that there’s some serious illegal gambling going on there. Sent in a rookie to check it out.
Dick Tracy-
Well, what are we waiting for? I wanna finally see Lips go down.
DA Fletcher-
The place doesn’t open until tonight.
Dick Tracy-
Well, when does it open?
DA Fletcher-
At eight.
-Tracy’s face slacks-
Dick Tracy-
I’ve got a date tonight.
DA Fletcher-
Tell her your busy.
Dick Tracy-
It’s not as easy as that.
Commissioner-
You know Tracy, you don’t have to be there for us to arrest him. I mean, we’ve got plenty of officers.
Dick Tracy-
But I want to be there.
DA Fletcher-
Does Dick Tracy have a personal dilemma? Listen, you do what you have to do, whether you are at The Blue Pad at 8:30, we’re making the arrest. It’s up to you whether or not you can make it.
-Fletcher begins to make his way out but stops-
DA Fletcher-
Oh and by the way, hope you have fun on your date.
-Fletcher winks as he leaves, closing the door behind him. Commissioner turns to Tracy-
Dick Tracy-
Did you see what he just did right there?
Commissioner-
Do I detect so professional jealous?
Dick Tracy-
Hardly, I’ve racked up 10 times more arrests then he has.
Commissioner-
Well then, I’d best be on my way.
-The Commissioner leaves. Tracy sits down in his chair and begins to examine his watch. Cut to Dick’s apartment. The living room, featuring bright pink wallpaper is almost empty except a couch. Dick Tracy stands in his bedroom, also almost entirely empty except a bed and a closet. He fastens his tie and walks into the bathroom that is green tiled. Dick looks at himself in the mirror and then down at his watch. He begins to take it off and places it on the counter then begins to leave until he turns around and places the watch in his rain coat pocket then officially leaves. We see Rafael’s Diner. It’s two stores with pink neon lights lining the place. Inside one of it’s many glass windows is Tess, sitting at a table in a blue dress that sparkles down to her ankles. She smiles her frost blue lips as Tracy takes his seat. A waiter approaches in a black vest and tap-dancing shoes with a curly stache-
Waiter-
What shall it be tonight?
Tess Trueheart-
How about-
-Tess opens her menu and takes a quick peek-
Tess Trueheart-
The... “Saucy El’Fonso Spaghetti”?
Waiter-
And you?
Dick Tracy-
What she’s having.
Waiter-
And for a drink?
Dick Tracy-
Wine.
Waiter-
White or red?
Dick Tracy-
Wine.
Waiter-
Good choice.
-The Waiter takes their menus and walks off. Dick Tracy looks at the clock, “8:10” it reads-
Tess Trueheart-
You see? Isn’t this nice?
Dick Tracy-
Yeah.
Tess Trueheart-
Oh! So, I was working the other day, getting some paperwork done and you know what I see?
Dick Tracy-
Wha-
Tess Trueheart-
-I see this cute little kid, pick-pocketing this fella, right in broad day light! But the kid must be good at it because the guy doesn’t even notice, that kid runs into the apartment, right across the street, doesn’t come out till my day’s work is nearly done, anyways, he comes out with this black eye, and he’s back to pick pocketing, poor child, probably stealing to keep his folks in the house getting abused cause he ain’t brining enough in. I really think something oughtta be done.
Dick Tracy-
I could get him.
Tess Trueheart-
I didn’t mean about arresting the kid for Pete’s sake Tracy! I meant about saving him, getting him a good home and all.
Dick Tracy-
Well, you’d make a great mom.
Tess Trueheart-
You really think so? How sweet Dick.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, sweet, I guess.
-Tracy glances at the clock, “8:12”-
Dick Tracy-
When the heck is our food going to get here?
Tess Trueheart-
I’d say another 20 minutes.
Dick Tracy-
For the wait it is, it’d better be the best meal I’ve ever had.
Tess Trueheart-
You seem ancy tonight.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah well, this DA Fletcher is bringing down Lips tonight.
Tess Trueheart-
Isn’t that good?
Dick Tracy-
I don’t know, I’ve been working for years to get him down on my own terms and the kid walks into office and the next day he’s got Lips.
Tess Trueheart-
Sounds alot better then the last DA, what’s his name?
Dick Tracy-
Morgan.
Tess Trueheart-
What happened to him?
Dick Tracy-
I brought him in.
Tess Trueheart-
For what?
Dick Tracy-
Accepting bribery.
Tess Trueheart-
Oh, explains alot.
-Dick glances the clock yet again, “8:14”. He sighs. Cut to The Blue Pad, the room is filled with as much smoke as ever and just as well crowded. Again, Breathless Mahoney is on stage as the strange looking fella plays piano. Breathless wears a gorgeous red skirt with a red top that frees her belly, along with this bright outfit is long red gloves with flowing blonde hair. She sings Nina Simone’s “Pirate Jenny”-
Breathless Mahoney- (Singing)
You people can watch while I’m scrubbing these floors
And I’m scrubbin the floors while you’re gawking
May’be once ya tip me and it makes ya feel swell
In this crummy southern town
In this crummy old hotel
But you’ll never guess to who you’re talkin.
No. You could’nt ever guess to who you’re talkin.
-The doors open as the Commissioner walks in, behind him is a troop of officers in bright blue uniforms and behind them is DA Fletcher. They all wait a moment-
Breathless Mahoney- (Singing)
Then one night there’s a scream in the night
And you’ll wonder who could that have been
And you see me kinda grinnin while I’m scrubbin
And you say, what’s she got to grin?
I’ll tell you.
-The police pull out there guns-
Commissioner-
ALRIGHT! THE SHOW’S OVER!
-Breathless stops singing. Lips, in his purple and green swirl suit, slurping on tea cups of vodka looks up. DA Fletcher makes his way to the head of the army of officers, proudly flashing his warrant-
DA Fletcher-
I have a warrant for both a search of this place and the arrest of Lips on multiple counts of running illegal gambling.
-Lips tips his head down as if they wouldn’t recognize him. He secretly tapes a button under his table. A door opens and Mumbles, holding a machine gun, jolts in the run firing at the officers, he makes a few hits but Fletcher and the Commissioner hit the floor, the Commissioner pulling out his gun and firing a few rounds, missing Mumbles, he begins to reload his gun as the rest of the officers fly out the front door to avoid begin shot at-
DA Fletcher-
Commissioner, give me the gun.
Commissioner-
Why?
DA Fletcher-
Let’s face it, I got better aim.
Commissioner-
Alright!
-Commissioner hands Fletcher the gun who quickly takes a shot and hits Mumbles in the shoulder who quickly falls to the ground holding onto his new wound. Fletcher stands up to see that Lips has made his escape, he goes over to Mumbles, and pulls him up. The Commissioner finally gets up-
DA Fletcher-
Commissioner! Come get this guy in cuffs. We can now add conspiracy to murder to Lips’ warrant.
-Fletcher smiles triumph-fully. He looks over at Breathless he just tosses her head down and smiles seductively. Cut back to Rafael’s Diner. Tracy looks at the clock, “8:51” it reads as Tess takes her last bite of her spaghetti, washing it down with wine. Dick’s plate has only had a few bites and his glass is still full-
Tess Trueheart-
You alright?
Dick Tracy-
Yeah. Why?
Tess Trueheart-
You’ve barely touched your food or even taken a drink.
Dick Tracy-
I’m the designated driver.
Tess Trueheart-
Oh.
Dick Tracy-
Did you think I’d really drink some if you were?
Tess Trueheart-
You wouldn’t get drunk with a glass.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, well, what if I’m a light weight.
Tess Trueheart-
You’d never know.
Dick Tracy-
True. Anyways, it’d be best if we get on our way now.
Tess Trueheart-
Why? As they say, “the night is young”.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, well, you don’t need a weather man to know which way the wind blows.
Tess Trueheart-
True. Where do you wanna go?
Dick Tracy-
I don’t know. Maybe it’d be best if I went home, got a day’s work ahead of me and I need my rest.
Tess Trueheart-
Rest? When does Dick Tracy ever rest?
Dick Tracy-
Taken this night off only delays the night’s work for tomorrow.
Tess Trueheart-
Well, you don’t want to get your sleep at my place?
Dick Tracy-
I’d be flattered but my place is more close to the station.
Tess Trueheart-
Tracy, I live a five minute walk away from you.
Dick Tracy-
Well, you know with the prices of gas these days.
Tess Trueheart-
Fine, let’s go.
-Dick Tracy gives a sly grin as they both stand up and begin to leave. Cut to the sidewalk, it seems Tracy offered to walk Tess home. They walk till they reach her doorstep-
Tess Trueheart-
Well, I had a good time with you tonight and am glad you sticked to you promise.
Dick Tracy-
The watch is at home, it was hard to leave it but for you: anything.
Tess Trueheart-
Such a sweet heart.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, well, you keep safe.
Tess Trueheart-
As always.
-Tracy and Tess kiss. She waves as she walks to her doorstep and closes the door behind her. Tracy quickly pulls out his radio watch and applies it, pressing it’s button-
Dick Tracy-
Tracy to Commissioner: why didn’t you call me?
-Tess looks at her window to see Dick talking into his watch, she sighs then closes the curtain-
Commissioner- (Radio Watch)
We had plenty of men, besides, you said yourself you were on a date.
Dick Tracy-
Yeah, well, what happened?
Commissioner- (Radio Watch)
Mumbles sprung on us, by the time Fletcher could get him down Lips was long gone.
Dick Tracy-
This wouldn’t have happened if I was there!
Commissioner- (Radio Watch)
Calm down Dick! Listen, we got Mumbles and a couple of witnesses who didn’t instantly run out of the door.
Dick Tracy-
I’m on my way.
-Tracy begins to make a run back to his Oldsmobile, gets in and starts driving toward the station. Cut to the Police Station: The interrogation room. The walls, all gray and plain, have no windows. There’s just a chair and a table with two seats. Mumbles sits at one end. On the other chair is DA Fletcher. Tracy walks in, closing the door behind him-
DA Fletcher-
You missed it Dick, it was a real mess.
Dick Tracy-
If I would have been there, we’d have Lips here instead.
DA Fletcher-
We’re lucky to have anyone.
Dick Tracy-
Has he spoken yet?
DA Fletcher-
Yeah, but heck if I know what he’s saying. I got a gal waiting for me at my place, I better go.
Dick Tracy-
Good luck.
-Fletcher walks out and closes the door behind him-
Dick Tracy-
Finally, just some good quality time with me and you Mumbles.
Mumbles-
Yeah, whatever.
-Mumbles accent, being mostly mumbles, is still hard to comprehend-
Dick Tracy-
Alright, let’s get to tonight’s topic: Lips. Where is he?
Mumbles-
Heck if I tell you.
Dick Tracy-
C’mon Mumbles. We got you for a good long time with the two officers you took to the Hospital. So: spill the beans.
Mumbles-
Never.
-Tracy walks over to Mumbles and lifts him higher then Dick himself with just one arm as the other makes a fist-
Dick Tracy-
I’ve got myself one heck of a left hook and by golly, I’m not afraid to use it!
Mumbles-
Give it your best.
-Tracy punches Mumbles, shooting him up to the ceiling, his head makes a crack in the ceiling as he does the floor when he hits it, he holds himself in pain-
Dick Tracy-
Now, that was just one punch. Think about what I could do with two or even three while I go and get myself a cup of coffee, alright pal?
Mumbles-
Fine! Fine! Fine!
Dick Tracy-
Sorry, can’t hear you.
-Tracy walks out of the room, locking the door behind him. The lights go out. Cut to DA Fletcher entering his apartment, the place is a golden color filled with many paintings of brave eagles. He puts his coat on the coat rack and makes his way into the living room to sit on his couch. He hears his bedroom door open-
DA Fletcher-
Is that you lovely?
-In comes Breathless, wearing a night gown that stops at 14 inches from her belly button, revealing her legs. It’s black with white swirls, her hair is all loose and blonde as can be-
DA Fletcher-
Well, aren’t you looking mighty fine...
-Fletcher stands up and makes his way to her-
DA Fletcher-
The things that you make me think of.
Breathless Mahoney-
You were quite... fast at The Blue Pad tonight.
DA Fletcher-
Trust me, I’m alot faster at my own pad.
Breathless Mahoney-
I hope not, wouldn’t want things to get too fast, I can only handle so much.
DA Fletcher-
Let’s hope so.
Breathless Mahoney-
No, let’s not hope. Let’s just find out.
-Fletcher grabs ahold of her and begins to feel her body-
DA Fletcher-
Oh wow...
Breathless Mahoney-
That’s what they all say.
-Fletcher drops to the floor, standing where he did is Big Boy Caprice wearing a feathered coat in the colors of red and black, he holds a bust of a eagle which he clearly just used to knock out Fletcher-
Big Boy Caprice-
“Wouldn’t want things to get too fast, I can only handle so much”. That’s great.
Breathless Mahoney-
Whatever you say... Big Boy.
Big Boy Caprice-
God, I love you. Alright, you can come out now guys.
-Two goons, with egg shaped heads wearing matching orange suits, come out from a closet-
Big Boy Caprice-
Let’s make Mr. Fletcher, more... comfortable.
Goon #1-
Sure thing boss.
Goon #2-
Whatever you say.
-The goons pick up DA Fletcher and begin to carry him out. Caprice looks oddly at Breathless-
Big Boy Caprice-
What are you still doing here? Go to bed, you’re our excuse when they notice the DA is missing.
Breathless Mahoney-
A girl like me can’t sleep alone... Big Boy.
-Caprice awkwardly snickers and follows her into Fletcher’s bedroom. Cut to Dick Tracy’s office, the morning sun shines from his window. The Commissioner walks in-
Commissioner-
Tracy, Fletcher is missing. Know anything about this?
Dick Tracy-
First time I heard about it.
Commissioner-
Do you know where he was last night?
Dick Tracy-
Well, he told me he was going home to this dame.
Commissioner-
Who this is woman?
Dick Tracy-
I don’t know, didn’t tell.
Commissioner-
Probably should get over to his place being the master detective you are.
Dick Tracy-
I’m on my way.
-Tracy killing grabs his yellow rain coat from the side of the door and swiftly puts it on the door and by the time he’s got his fedora on: he’s out of the door. Cut to DA Fletcher’s apartment. In the light the place just looks ugly, the walls are over-crowded with paintings and the couch hardly aligns with the TV. Sitting on this couch, in a light blue bathrobe and with her hair all tied up is Breathless Mahoney, she instantly turns around when Tracy enters the room-
Dick Tracy-
Madame, sorry to be a bother but we think DA Fletcher has gone missing.
Breathless Mahoney-
I know.
Dick Tracy-
Why didn’t you report this?
Breathless Mahoney-
I had just woken up when I found out he wasn’t here. I’ve had a rather... rough tonight. You see, I was singing at The Blue Pad and-
Dick Tracy-
-you’re a witness. So, this must’ve been how Fletcher found you. What’s your name?
Breathless Mahoney-
Breathless... Breathless Mahoney.
Dick Tracy-
Well Breathless, I think it’s best if we continue down at the station.
Breathless Mahoney-
Are you going to try and rub it out of me?
Dick Tracy-
Well-
Breathless Mahoney-
-cause I wouldn’t mind if I did it to you.
-Breathless stands up and grabs ahold of Tracy’s arm-
Breathless Mahoney-
I hear that interrogation room has a lock on it and sometimes... well, the lights just go out for hours.
-Tracy lifts her head up with his hand, almost as if he were going in for a kiss-
Dick Tracy-
We’ll just have to see about that.
-Cut back to the Police Station, Tracy leads Breathless Mahoney, know wearing a silk short dress with her hair all straightened out, through the station as most of the coppers stop what they’re doing to stare at her beauty. Dick closes the interrogation room behind him, Breathless takes a seat, it seems that Mumbles is still in the corner, asleep-
Breathless Mahoney-
So, how are we going to start this? From the bottom up or the top down... I prefer the latter.
Dick Tracy-
You’re going to tell me what you were doing at The Blue Pad.
Breathless Mahoney-
Singing.
Dick Tracy-
Do you normally sing there?
Breathless Mahoney-
All the time Daddy-O.
Dick Tracy-
Did you know that Lips ran an illegal gambling club up stairs?
Breathless Mahoney-
Honey... I didn’t no nothing with what Lips was doing: I just sung.
Dick Tracy-
How’d you get hired?
Breathless Mahoney-
I just showed of my... talent.
Dick Tracy-
You know anything about Mumbles over there?
Breathless Mahoney-
Never seen him.
Dick Tracy-
So, the entire time you sung at The Blue Pad you knew nothing of what was really going on?
Breathless Mahoney-
I’m just a singer.
Dick Tracy-
Alright. Listen.
-Dick Tracy pulls out a card and hands it to Breathless-
Dick Tracy-
If you know anymore on the whereabouts of Fletcher or what went down at The Blue Pad, you be sure and give me a call, alright?
Breathless Mahoney-
I’ll make a note of it.
-Dick Tracy opens the door as Breathless walks out, blowing Tracy a kiss on the out. Tracy closes the door and grabs a glass of water that’s been on the table, he throws it at Mumbles who, now soaking wet, wakes up-
Dick Tracy-
Mumbles, know anything about Breathless Mahoney?
Mumbles-
Tastier then a box of cracker jacks.
Dick Tracy-
What was that?
Mumbles-
Cracker jacks.
-Dick Tracy, still not able to tell what Mumbles is saying, just leaves the room with Mumbles, soaked, in the dark. Cut to Tess Trueheart, she’s at a hair salon behind the counter, filing paperwork as paper get some of the worst haircuts you can imagine, the men look just like they signed up for the army and the women look butch. Across the street, there’s a kid wearing a rusty brown coat, holy sneakers and a half torn tie along with a generic “orphan” hat. He watches people go by and occasionally pickpockets one or two. Tess watches him until Dick Tracy walks in to a straight walk infront of the counter-
Tess Trueheart-
Tracy! What are you doing here?
Dick Tracy-
The kid you were talking about last night, that him?
-Tracy points to the kid-
Tess Trueheart-
Yeah, that’s him, poor thing.
-Tracy rushes out of the door and to the kid, who’s just pick pocketed a elderly man-
Dick Tracy-
Kid.

-Green fog engulfs the skyline as the bright moon begins to rise. Noise booms from a nearby club, light bulbs spell out “The Blue Pad”, with a marquee under it reading “It’ll leave you breathless”.
-Tracy rushes out of the door and to the kid, who’s just pick pocketed a elderly man-
Dick Tracy-
Kid.
