EXT. NEW YORK POLICE DEPT. - NIGHT
Over Music - "Heroes" David Bowie
The doors to the building are opened when out walks CHRISTIAN MEYER, a respected cop. He has a chiseled jaw and is dressed sharply with a long overcoat. He yells into the building.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Good night, Doris. I'll see you tomorrow morning.
He begins to walk down the empty side walk, it's late. CHRISTIAN reaches his car, one of only a few on the block. For a summers night, it's very chilly. He takes out his key and unlocks the car and opens the drivers seat door. All of a sudden he's ambushed by two men. One large, the other slightly smaller. He kicks him to the ground, stomping him. CHRISTIAN begins to fight back. But it's no use as the larger man places CHRISTIAN'S head between the car and the car door, repeatedly they slam the door into CHRISTIAN'S head. CHRISTIAN begins to bleed, coughing up blood. The two men stop and move aside as an older man, MITCHELL KENNA steps forward between them.
MITCH KENNA
Goodbye... Christian.
In that instant, MITCH pulls out a gun. He looks down on the fallen CHRISTIAN and smiles, a satisfied smile.
The scene cuts to black.

TONY WEST, young, medium sized and unshaven lies on a couch, asleep. The TV is on, almost blaring. Some shopping network, his mother, SUSAN WEST, 43, walks in. She's cleaning.
SUSAN WEST
Tony, honey. You're gonna need to wake up, sweetheart.
TONY stirs, groaning.
TONY WEST
What time is it, ma?
SUSAN WEST
12, and you know I need you outta here soon.
TONY rises. He's wearing his casual clothes, likely at a party the night before.
TONY WEST
Those old bats better not touch my drums.
We see drums in the corner of the living room, by a window.
SUSAN WEST
Well, maybe you shouldn't leave them out in the open. Besides, what would my friends want with drums?
TONY WEST
I don't know, their your friends, not mine.
TONY checks his pockets. His phone, and wallet are intact. He checks his wallet and is depressed by the low amount of cash he has, $10. TONY heads to the door.
TONY WEST
OK, I'm heading off. Later.
SUSAN looks up.
SUSAN WEST
Alright, be home in time for dinner.
There is no reaction from TONY as he heads out the house.
EXT. STREET - DAY
TONY WEST is heading down a street, towards what looks like a cafe.He enters and sits down in a booth, also in the booth is ANDREW STOKES, a similar age to TONY, but slightly paler, with jet black hair. ANDREW has a coffee in hand. He's adding sugar.
ANDREW STOKES
So, Tones. What's up?
TONY WEST
Not too much, man. My mom's driving me up the walls. Always having the old bags over all day.
ANDREW smirks.
ANDREW STOKES
Tony, I know what you need.
TONY WEST
What's that?
ANDREW STOKES
A damn job. You've been floating around aimlessly for way too long. Look at me, man. I just started working for a guy, pays great, and works easy. Maybe I can get you a meeting with him?
TONY shakes his head.
TONY WEST
No. Look, I know I'm pathetic. But things always seem to work themselves out for me. Besides, if I ever want a job, I'll I need yo do is drop my fathers name at a few places, and BAM! They'll sign me on, no problems.
ANDREW STOKES
Tony, things aren't that simple. Sure, there's a lot of respect for your dad around these parts. But that for your dad, not for you. My dads in the force, you don't see me getting things handed to me of a silver platter.
TONY WEST
Yeah, but my dads a hero. People don't forget things like that.
There's a brief silence between the two. TONY stands up.
TONY WEST
I'm gonna go order a burger. You want one?
ANDREW shakes his head.
ANDREW STOKES
I had a big breakfast.
TONY heads up to the counter, a young woman, BELLA ROCHESTER is purchasing a muffin. She's wearing a nurses uniform.
BELLA ROCHESTER
(To the cashier)
Oh, I left my purse back at work. Um.
She turns and looks to TONY, she smile, shyly.
BELLA ROCHESTER
I'm so sorry, but you wouldn't happen to have 3 dollars, would you?
TONY reaches into his pocket and pulls out his wallet. All he has is the $10 dollar note.
TONY WEST
Um. Ah, yeah. Sure.
TONY pulls out the $10 and hands it to BELLA.
TONY WEST
Sorry. No change.
BELLA passes over the note to the cashier and she takes out the change, handing it back to BELLA.
BELLA ROCHESTER
Thank you so much...
BELLA reaches out, looking to give the change to TONY. But TONY is looking into BELLA'S eyes, obviously attracted to her. He suddenly realizes her gesture.
TONY WEST
Oh, ah. No. You keep it.
BELLA grins.
BELLA ROCHESTER
You sure?
TONY WEST
Yeah. I don't need it.
BELLA looks down.
BELLA ROCHESTER
Well, thank you again.
BELLA walks away before TONY can think of anything smart to say. TONY walks back to the booth and sits, still looking at BELLA.
ANDREW STOKES
What? No burger?
TONY WEST
No.. No burger.
ANDREW turns and she's that TONY is looking at BELLA.
ANDREW STOKES
Your taste could get you into trouble, buddy.
TONY WEST
What do you mean?
ANDREW STOKES
That's the niece of Mitchell Kenna.
TONY'S jaw drops.
TONY WEST
THE Mitch Kenna?
ANDREW nods. TONY seems strange, the name Mitchell Kenna means something to him.
TONY WEST
How do you know?
ANDREW STOKES
I know everything, Tony.
ANDREW is still stirring his coffee as he looks at a newspaper. TONY sees this.
TONY WEST
Are you ever going to drin---
TONY stops mid sentence when he realizes ANDREW'S knuckles are bloody and bruised.
TONY WEST
What happened to your hands?
ANDREW stops stirring the coffee and hides his hands.
ANDREW STOKES
Nothing.. I...
They are interrupted by the ring tone of TONY'S phone. TONY answers, it's his mother, SUSAN.
SUSAN WEST (o.s.)
Tony, honey. Can you bring some wine home? Edwin and Caroline are coming for dinner.
TONY WEST
Uh, yeah. Sure, I don't see why not. I won't be able to stay long enough for dinner though.
SUSAN WEST (O.S.)
Why is that?
ANDREW chuckles, winking at TONY.
TONY WEST
Ah, I'm going to a party with Andrew.
SUSAN WEST (O.S.)
OK, then just drop it off when you can.
TONY WEST
No problem. I'll seen you soon.
TONY hangs up the phone. ANDREW sports a sly grin.
ANDREW STOKES
I wasn't aware of a party.
TONY shrugs.
TONY WEST
I've had to get out of dinner with Ed and Caroline. I hate hanging around the oldies.
ANDREW STOKES
Fair enough.
TONY WEST
So, what are you doing tonight?
ANDREW takes a brief pause.
ANDREW STOKES
Work. You know? The thing that people do to make a buck.
TONY gives a sarcastic laugh.
TONY WEST
You know, I still don't understand what it is that you do exactly.
ANDREW STOKES
Yeah. Neither do I.
INT. MITCH KENNA'S NIGHT CLUB - DAY
MITCH KENNA sits at a desk, he appears to be counting money within his office. Suddenly there is a knock on the door.
MITCH KENNA
Who is it?
BELLA ROCHESTER
It's me, Bella.
MITCH scoops the cash into a draw.
MITCH KENNA
Come in.
BELLA opens the door and smiles upon entering.
MITCH KENNA
Ah, my favorite niece!
BELLA smirks.
BELLA ROCHESTER
You're only niece. Uncle Mitch, do you mind if I bring a few friends to the club tonight, I know how you feel about me hanging around at night.
MITCH takes a moment to think, he then smiles.
MITCH KENNA
OK, sweetheart. That's fine, just as long as you keep away from the older men. I know them, and how they think and I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you.
BELLA ROCHESTER
Thanks.
BELLA goes to leave.
MITCH KENNA
Hang on. Will you be here for dinner? Mike and the new guy are bringing back pizza.
BELLA ROCHESTER
Um, I might. Depends on if they want me to work late at the hospital.
MITCH nods.
MITCH KENNA
I'll see you later on then.
BELLA leaves the room, closing the door. MITCH goes back to counting his money.
EXT. STREET - EVENING
We find our protagonist, TONY, walking down a street. An oddly familiar one. It's the same one in which CHRISTIAN MEYER was murdered. TONY enters a convenience store, close to the former crime scene. He walks by the clerk.
INT. STORE (that moment)
TONY WEST
Hey. Ah, where are your cheap wines?
The clerk, never lifting his head from a newspaper he's reading points to the back of the store. TONY nods and makes his way down the the back of the store. He searches the rack and picks one out. He reads the label, not that he really cares what's in it, just browsing. Suddenly the reflection of a man appears in the glass. The man taps TONY on the, shoulder.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Simon?
TONY turns.
TONY WEST
Pardon?
CHRISTIAN appears to be frustrated.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
You're not Simon... How can you see me?
TONY WEST
Um...
TONY looks around the store, and then to the clerk who is still buried in his magazine.
TONY WEST (cont')
With my eyes. Do you need help or something?
CHRISTIAN looks clean, he's wearing a suit, but is clearly shaken up.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
I need Simon.. Simon West.
A look of shock comes across the face of TONY. He all of a sudden becomes threatened.
TONY WEST
How do you know that name? Why do you know my fathers name?
CHRISTIAN stares into the eyes of TONY.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Tony... Is that you Tony?
TONY is taken aback by the fact that CHRISTIAN knows his name. TONY freaks out and heads to the counter. CHRISTIAN follows, reasoning with TONY.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Look, Tony. I'm Christian Meyer. A friend of your fathers. Don't you remember me?
TONY WEST
You can't be Christian Meyers, he's dead.
They reach the counter. TONY places the wine on the counter. The clerk looks up.
CLERK
That will be $11.50.
TONY reaches into his pocket, but he remembers that he has no cash on him.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Tony, listen. I need you're help.
TONY turns to CHRISTIAN
TONY WEST
Just leave me alone!
The clerk looks at TONY confused.
CLERK
Uh, dude? Who are you talking too?
TONY'S head shoots to the clerk.
TONY WEST
You.. You can't see him?
CLERK
See who? There's nobody there. Heck there's no one in this store but you and me.
TONY turns and looks at CHRISTIAN then back at the CLERK. He then grabs the wine and rushes out the store. The CLERK stands.
CLERK
Hey! You need to pay for that!
EXT. STREET - (THAT MOMENT)
TONY is walking at a fast pace, CHRISTIAN follows.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
You can't walk away from me. I won't go away until you help me! For some reason I've been brought to you. If you just stop we can figure this or, maybe go and see your father!
TONY continues walking.
TONY WEST
Just go away! You're freaking me out!
CHRISTIAN MEYER
You have to help me!
TONY WEST
NO! GET AWAY!
TONY turns and throws the bottle for wine, it flies straight through CHRISTIAN'S body and smashes on the concrete behind him. TONY stops, he stares at CHRISTIAN.
TONY WEST
How?
CHRISTIAN MEYER
I've been brought back to finish something off. I'm not here for you. I just need to see your father.
TONY turns and closes his eyes.
TONY WEST
No! You're not there... You're not real.
TONY continues walking, his eyes shut and hands over his ears, ignoring CHRISTIAN.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Tony. Please!
TONY walks, not realizing that he's approaching a road. A car is speeding towards him.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Tony! Look out!
As soon as TONY steps foot on the road the cars breaks are hit, but the car still hits TONY. Hard.
INT. HOSPITAL - DAY
TONY opens his eyes. His shoulder is bandaged and his head bandaged. He looks to the side, his mother is sitting beside him, holding his good hand.
SUSAN WEST
Honey, you we're in an accident. You're going to be fine.
She smiles, seeing that her son is fine. TONY looks up to see BELLA ROCHESTER, in full nurse uniform. TONY smiles, and BELLA returns the smile.
BELLA ROCHESTER
Tony, you've sustained injuries to your left arm and head. But other than that, you should be fine. Just watch where you walk.
SUSAN stands.
SUSAN WEST
I need to get to work now honey, but I'll come by later on when your feeling better to drive you home.
She kisses him on the forehead and leave the room. This leaves TONY and BELLA. TONY sits up.
TONY WEST
Wow. This is embarrassing.
BELLA ROCHESTER
What do you mean?
TONY WEST
Well, I was hoping to ask you out. Yesterday, I mean.
BELLA chuckles.
BELLA ROCHESTER
That would be the pain killers talking there.
Both smile.
BELLA ROCHESTER
Anyway. I'll come and check on you in about a half an hour.
She leaves room, closing the door behind her. CHRISTIAN MEYER is standing behind the door.
TONY WEST
Not you again!
CHRISTIAN puts his hands out.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Tony, please. Just hear me out.
TONY looks away.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
One year ago, I was killed. I was murdered in cold blood. Do you remember that?
TONY nods.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
I was in my prime, too young to have my life taken from me. The bastard that killed me has been alluding any convictions for years. I had the dirt that would put him away, so he took me out. He's still out there, and I've been given my chance at revenge. But as you can see...
CHRISTIAN attempts to touch the bed, but his hand goes straight through.
CHRISTIAN MEYER (cont')
.. I can't. That why I've been brought to you. To get in touch with your father so he can help me get the man that did this to me behind bars... For good.
TONY looks at CHRISTIAN.
TONY WEST
I don't understand. Why me? Why not somebody else?
CHRISTIAN MEYER
As I said. You need to take me to your father.
There's a close up on TONY'S face.
OVER MUSIC - "CLOSER" JOSHUA RADIN
EXT. NEW YORK PARK/RESERVE - DAY
OVER MUSIC - "CLOSER" CONTINUES
The camera pans up across the green grass. We find TONY and CHRISTIAN standing before a gravestone. CHRISTIAN looks to TONY.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
I'm so sorry. I had no idea.
TONY continues to stare at the stone.
TONY WEST
So, why me? I don't get it.
CHRISTIAN looks down.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
I think I understand.
TONY turns his head from the stone to face CHRISTIAN.
CHRISTIAN MEYER (CONT')
I think you're the one. The one that's going to help me get Mitch Kenna behind bars.
TONY WEST
Mitchell Kenna?
OVER MUSIC - "Closer" FADES
CHRISTIAN MEYER
You know him?
TONY'S head drops.
TONY WEST
I think he killed my father.
There's a short pause.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Well, that's why I've been brought to you. We both have our reasons to get that son of a bitch behind bars.
TONY WEST
But I'm not certain that he's the one who killed my father.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Look. I knew you're father. Me and Simon we're good friends. We both knew Mitch was a cold blooded killer. He's this city's highest criminal. You're father would turn in his grave if he knew Kenna was still out there, if his murdering me went without notice. I'm almost certain he would have been behind the death of you father. Tony, I need you to help me. We can take this case and find out what happened. Why you have to be a 20 year old kid without a father.
TONY seems unsure.
CHRISTIAN MEYER (CONT')
Simon would want you to do this. If not for me, then for him. Mitchell Kenna has lived without consequences for too long.
TONY thinks it through.
TONY WEST
OK. I'll help you.
CHRISTIAN smiles.
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Thank you. Tony, this means the world to me. I'm sorry your father had to die.
They both turn and begin to walk. They don't speak from a few seconds. TONY looks to CHRISTIAN.
TONY WEST
Christian?
CHRISTIAN MEYER
Yeah?
TONY WEST
I'm sorry.
CHRISTIAN thinks, and then realizes that the comment was in reference to his own situation.

OVER MUSIC - "HEROES" DAVID BOWIE
CHRISTIAN and TONY continue to walk together, further and further away from the camera. The scene fades.
