We Can Work It Out
Pilot Episode: "What Have We Here?"
Starring
Bill Smitrovich as Harrison James
Dean Cain as Harold Manson
Michael Irby as Lewis Fisher
------------------------------
The scene opens with Harrison James in his uniform. He is a highly decorated police officer, and he is looking through the police reports for the past three weeks.
Harrison- Damn. This is a lot of reports.
Tim Johnson, his partner, looks up from the book he's reading.
Tim- I know. Those damn hippies are killing each other. Soon, there ain't gonna be none of them left, and our jobs will be a whole lot easier.
Harrison looks at his partner, then back at the police reports.
Harrison- Did you ever think though, about maybe the slight possibility that the hippies are right, and this war is all for nothing? Like seriously believe that maybe America is doing the wrong thing, and we should maybe hurry out of it before something happens that we won't like?
Tim- No, I just think that those damn hippies need to give up their shit and live like normal Americans. If you can't support your country then don't live here. That's my only suggestion, and if they don't like it, I don't give a rat's ass.
Harrison- Good words, Tim.
Tim gives a half-hearted salute, jokingly, and they both chuckle a little bit.
Tim- I know, man. I know.

The next scene opens with a riot in New York. There are a whole bunch of CO's standing around a US Army recruiter's office, most of them marching around and holding picket signs, chanting angrily. The recruiters are trying to handle the situation without violence, and the CO's are just getting angrier as time passes.
Harold- This war is total bull! We don't deserve to watch our brothers and sisters die for this!
The officers are still unsuccessfully trying to smooth things out, but nothing is working. They eventually resort to violence. There is a big gang pile on one of the CO leaders, and all Hell breaks loose. There is a huge brawl going on, and police cars are seen flying down the street towards the scene. The police jump into it and the fight continually grows as the scene fades to black.

The scene fades in from the commercial in a Vietnam jungle. There are about 10 American soldiers walking around, guns in hand, looking very carefully for any enemy that they may come across. Lewis Fisher is in the front of the group, basically leading the pack.
Lewis- I can't believe this stuff, man. We're over here fighting, when all the real fun is happening back home. I'm sure you've all heard about all these riots and shit. It's amazing. I want to go back home so I can join in on this!
Tom- Oh shut up! You have got to be one of the most retarded people I've ever met!
Lewis- Dude, I was joking.
Tom- Me too, but that's not the point.
The two men continue to argue, and not long after they are arguing, gunshots can be heard. The four soldiers dive out of the way, hoping that they don't get shot. They are hidden behind anything that they can find. Tree stumps, whole trees, old logs, anything. Tom points his gun to where he can see the shots coming from, and he fires a few times. His friend, Lewis, throws a grenade in that direction and it explodes. Two Vietnamese men are seen being knocked out of the forest by the explosion. The men wait for a while, and when nothing can be heard, they start to run back to their camp.

The scene fades back in at the police department. Harrison James is seen at his desk, filling out paperwork. His phone rings. He looks down at it and answers it.
Harrison- Hello? Shots fired? 6 dead? Yeah, I'll be there then.
Harrison hangs up the phone and looks at his partner.
Harrison- Looks like we're gonna be working over time, bud.
The two men get up from their desks, put their guns in the holsters, and walk out the door, making sure the others know where they're at, and set their walkies to the same channels. When the two men arrive at the scene, the big brawl is still going on, and Harrison gets out of the car.
Harrison- Alright, you can cut it out now!
Harrison waits, but the fight is still going on.
Harrison- Jesus H. Christ.
Harrison fires his gun up in the air, and the fight stops. The crowd seperates back into the two groups, looking right at the two police officers standing there.
Harrison- This shit needs to stop. You damn hippies... You damn soldiers... Look...
Harrison takes a deep sigh.
Harrison- We are brothers, and we have brothers, overseas, fighting, and this shit goes on over here. You guys need to take a deep breath and relax for a minute. Think before you act. That phrase has always done the job when I needed it to, and I don't plan on stopping yet.
This little speech continues and the camera zooms out, slowly fading out until the big mob is just a little ball of people. The scene then fades into the jungle again, with Lewis and his friends sitting at their outpost, talking to each other about the war.
Lewis- Dude, I'm getting pretty sick of this shit. Hopefully next time they send someone else out, because I don't want to be scared I'm gonna get ambushed in the jungle every 30 seconds.
Tom- It's hard to feel like you won't though, this whole damn country is in the jungle.
Lewis- I know. The sooner the war ends the better.
The men all continue to talk as that scene fades out. The scenes cut back and forth as "We Can Work It Out" by The Beatles plays for the remainder of the episode. The words said are kind of blended into an unknown jumble of words, and the scene fades to black and the credits roll.
