2x09– “... Of No Return”
I think it’s fairly obvious right off the bat that Scott is working with C.O and is planning to lead Harding and Alex into a C.O laid trap. The white room scene and exchange between C.O and Cereghino seems to prove that theory correct. It’s an interesting way to go and gives a nice, intriguing start to the opening of the episode.
Derek, on death’s door is raced to the hospital where Clare once again has to try and save someone’s life. Clare has pretty much been a useless character all season, I’d have like to have seen something out of her, more than the typical “I’ll see what I can do” type stuff.
Scott taking Alex and Harding to a motel is what it i, and as you’d expect from a show like “Point”, the shooting starts almost immediately as a green car pulls up outside. As Scott and company duck for cover, there’s a flashback to Scott being held in the basement of the Johnson Company. I really enjoyed C.O’s phone conversation with Fin Black in “Escalation” and I like Fin’s introduction here, discussing the Directors with Scott. We saw the director’s briefly with C.O earlier in the Season and I wanted to hear a little more than “they are not people you’d want to piss off.” We already know that, now give us some new information. The confirmation that Scott has indeed agreed to sell Alex and Harding down the river was the right move. It was obvious when he appeared in the previous episode and it was made even more apparent at the start of this one. I liked that you didn’t beat around the bush, put it out in the open and when Scott doesn’t betray them and instead helps save them (which I’m predicting he will do) it’ll be more of a hero moment for him.
Wells investigating the bodies of those killed at the Gun shop in the fire fight with Derek was a nice scene. Finding out that all these people (now deceased0 had two letter names, all of which began with “C” was interesting and I hope to find out why.
The conversation between Alex and Harding should have taken place a long time ago. It’s been an age since Li was mentioned and again, earlier in the Season seemed to be a large part of the plot that has been almost forgotten about since. Also, Alex telling Harding he would be going to prison would have played better earlier on, showing there’s distrust there. Now she’s worked with him for a while, divulged intimate details of her personal life with him, and kissed him for no reason whatsoever, it just seems random and kind of out of place.
C.O’s conversation with Scott before meeting with the board of directors was well written and I liked ~C.O’s line after revealing there’s a mole in Derek’s group. I’m predicting the mole is Sophie who was shown with a gun in the first episode of the season and has done little of note since then. Also, little wrinkle in the timeframe, earlier in the episode Fin was seen talking Scott and it took place before this meeting. However the meeting in question supposedly took place “Power”, which occurred before C.O’s phone conversation with Fin, inviting him down to California.
The final flashback proved my theory correct as Scott refuses to go along with C.O’s plan and escapes, which is the Scott that’s rushed to Alex and Harding’s rescue. Scott also reveals that there’s a mole in Derek’s group to Alex and Harding which gears us up for an interesting finale.
Overall, this episode was very well constructed. You did a good job of teasing Scott to be a traitor throughout the episode and laid it on thick with the attack on the motel, the hurrying along of Alex to get to a certain destination. Which played into the plan C.O and Scott constructed. It all lead up to a really good reveal, that whilst I predicated still managed to please me when it took place. The side story with Clare working on Derek to save his life and Wells and Sophie looking into this Cult C.O and the others are a part of were slightly thrilling but worked for what they were. It was nice to see Sophie and Wells get a chance to do something important which makes a change to the background roles they’ve had all Season long. Overall, this was the most ambitious episode of “Point” to date and was also one of the best constructed. I’ve been critical of the use of flashbacks throughout this Season however in “...Of No Return” it worked to the episodes benefit and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
