We see an empty podium on a stage. Behind the podium is the official US Presidential seal. A dozen microphones sit on the podium. The room is silent for a moment until the President, David Garcia (Nestor Carbonell) walks from the side of the stage to the podium.
As Garcia reaches the podium, reporters frantically begin screaming out inaudible questions.
Garcia clears his throat loudly into the microphones and the room falls silent again.
Garcia: Hello, members of the press...You know why I come before you today. Today, I do not address any specific group, race, gender, or political party. Today, I address the American people, for the first time in nearly a century, we are one people. For the first time in nearly a century, we must be one people.
Garcia: And I speak to the American people, maybe for the first time, as one of you. You all know of the tragedy which befell my only son. Terrorism and cowardice such as this are on the rise in the world, despite my best efforts.
Garcia clears his throat, looks down at the podium, and continues.
Garcia: You know why we must stand together. Due to the recent events since I took the office in 2008, the world is not as safe as for democracy it once was. Various radicals have taken full control of countries with nuclear stockpiles. These radicals are a threat not only to America, but a threat to our principles and way of life as a whole. The next years may very well tell whether freedom can endure such times.
Garcia: And because of this-because of what has happened in Iraq, Iran, Russia, Korea, Taiwan, China, and even on our own soil-despite our best efforts, a conflict is very possible. For these reasons, it has been deemed necessary that we institute a national draft-the first peacetime draft in over seventy years.
At this, the press goes into an uproar. Reporters rise out of their seats, trying to question the President. A man next to Garcia on the stage points to one member of the press in the first row.
Reporter: Mr. President, what would you say to those who believe that all of these conflicts, seemingly seperate from eachother, are on a collision course, that they will form one giant conflict, the likes of which we have never seen before-World War Three?
Garcia pauses before answering.
Garcia: I'd say that I pray to God every night that they are wrong. But I also say that these days, it seems that prayers are answered less and less with every passing day. Which is why we must prepare ourselves for this conflict. We will not permit terrorists and those who support them to destroy the very foundation of our nation. We and our allies will stand strong for democracy. If democracy of all things cannot withstand this crisis, then I have little hope for the future of this world. But rest assured, if we stand united, democracy will not fall.
We see flashes of a mushroom cloud rising over a destroyed city.
Garcia: Democracy cannot fail.
