Casablanca and the Movies
Episode #1
casablanca3491 - Casablanca
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello, MR Directors and patrons, and welcome to the first episode of “Casablanca and the Movies”. This is one of our special episodes where no new films are released, allowing me the time to dive into the Movie Reels’ directors, the films of MR, and other special topics, including an interview with director indy42. Now, I’ll jump around a little this episode, so please try and stay with me, however, there are a lot of things I want to get to, and I don’t want to keep you here too long, so I can spread a little over to the next episode.
I would like to start out by taking a peek at new, upcoming films. Let’s take a while, really look into them and maybe we can get an idea of what they are like.
First, let’s take Rockstar Production’s new film ”Humanity…Gone?”, one of my most anticipated films, as it seems to not only have a wonderful, surreal quality to it, but also good drama, really good drama. It seems moving, terrifying in how deep it goes. I was pulled in, just by the teaser, which was short, and gave us nothing, but it is strangely compelling. Especially the line at the end, easily missed, but offers a wonderful tableau of feelings and interpretations that only seeing the film will clench. Here is the teaser he released a while ago:
*Clouds shadow the sun.
Trees blow into the wind.
All of a sudden a clap of thunder is heard.
The bright day turns into a dark night.
One man stands with his pockets inside his pants while the rain pours onto him.
His open shirt with a silver chain around his neck.
Black pants, no shoes.
He stands in the street,
as headlights from a car show up behind him.*
J.B.
"No........Not like this."
Notice how he writes each line, it comes off as a poem, a song, some sonata towards death and chaos, and its almost frightening. I can picture this being a dark film, an imaginative film, one that takes us somewhere new and scary, but curious, none the less. Speaking of curiosity, Rockstar later released a new trailer which answered many questions but brought up so much new ones. It is quite lengthy so let us just examine parts of it, segments I find important. The trailer starts like such:
A cherry red mustang heads into the driveway. A man in a collared shirt with a matching blue tie steps out and into his house. He eyes his wife, cleaning a wine glass with a towel.
-Matthew-
“Hi Honey”
-Sara-
“Hi baby”
I can picture a suburban scenario, where it builds up to someone having a nice life, in a nice town, and this might be the intro. We may start with being shown a man who is completely normal with a decent job, a caring family, and a lovely house. Then, however, things go bad, it appears, when:
He slowly steps down the stairs, to see the glass on the floor. His wife and daughter, no where in sight. He calls their names.
-Matthew-
“SARA? SAMANTHA?”
He hears an explosion outside. He opens the door to find in houses, cars crashed, and mayhem. Yet, nobody to be found.
Now, to me, it appears that the world basically ended. This is probably the plot of the film coming out right at us. So, right now we have man who lives a normal boring life, then one day, randomly the world ends and only he is seemingly left alive. Then we are introduced to more characters, making it appear that a few others lived and the film may be a drama taking place after the end of the world. The characters are:
A business man walks down the street in his suit watching the streets be devoured in flames. Explosions, smoke, distant noises without a single soul to be seen nor heard.
The sight changes to the perspective of a woman, with a few scratch marks on her face, watching a skyscraper crumble down from a distance in shock and awe.
The scene changes to an older black man, his face filled with tears, as he pets a dog from his porch. He watches a house across the street burn to the ground.
In a new fading scene, a teenager is shown walking around a deserted hospital with a confused expression. He pulls an IV plug out of his arm and walks out two doors, with light overtaking him outside the doors.
An interesting cast of characters, and this film is bound to be loaded with many interesting interactions and scenarios, maybe some disagreements, maybe some heated tension, maybe even a love story thrown in. Whatever it is though, it doesn’t look like it will be a conventional film. The trailer starts into a series of almost surreal imagery, that though isn’t bizarre, has an artistic method to them.
The elderly black man is shown bowing on a stage, covered in spotlights with a smile upon his face. He takes another bow as all the lights turn out.
Fading into another scene, J.B. chomps on a cigar, and smacks a woman down to the ground. The scene then fades into the dark woman cocking a shotgun and pointing it blank in front of her.
Matthew is then shown next to the scratched woman, on top of a building. The sun sets in front of them as they share a kiss.
So, in conclusion, I believe we can expect a great movie from Rockstar, an intense picture, a twisted film, and an incredible ride.
Next, lets take a new comic book film called “The Raven”, a film being released by Xplayadam. Like “Humanity…Gone?”, it has a short teaser, which doesn’t give us much except for a mood, possibly a mood we can expect to see in the story. It starts on an odd note, with:
The limbs of the trees are twisted into fierce shapes, all hanging close together like a row of hanged men. In the midst of this physical madness is a Rachel Roth. Skin as pale as death, dark bags under her eyes and hair as black as can be, with a very skinny figure. She wears tight black long sleeve and dark jeans. She looks toward at a old looking tree-
From this we can get quite a bit though. Look at all of the word selection, fierce, twisted, madness, death, as black as they can be. It is obvious that he is trying to create an eerie mood, a dark atmosphere, which leads me to believe that he is trying to craft more then just a comic book film. Also, look at all the detail about Rachel, he is showing us some early character design, which often means that there will be some character development in the film, which usually entails some good drama. Later, we are told that a scene happens where:
Rachel lets go and marvelous flash of darkness strikes from her wrists and blasts through the tree and beyond, her eyes widen in amazement-
Rachel looks down to see nothing on her wrists. She returns her eyes to the tree to see half of it missing and a black smog rising from it-
-Rachel falls on her knees and begins to shed tears-
From this we are let into even more character drama, as we are shown the most potent of all drama, inner conflict. She does not want her powers, does not want to stick out, and thus has emotional pain. Pain which probably propels the story and forces her to do what she does. Thus, I believe that we will be surprised at a movie which isn’t what we expect. It won’t be the action, adventure everyone may picture, but instead a good drama about a scared and flawed girl.
Well, that is it for upcoming films for this episode, expect more next time. Now, I would like to post an interview I had with director indy42, and then possibly say a few words about his career and future career.
Interview With Indy42
Q: Hello, indy42. It is my understanding that your next two films include The Punisher and Parody Movie. Previously, in my last episode, I commented how your films are usually based around a few action or thrilling scenes, is this true with these films?
A:I do have a fondness for thrillers, action movies in particular, and a lot of my movies and scripts are thrillers. This is true for "The Punisher" which is an action-superhero movie. It's based around a series of increasingly violent gunfights and fistfights. With "Parody Movie", however, I'm trying to write sort of a wild comedy, about how it must be like for the two writer/directors to keep farting out flicks like "Disaster Movie" and "Meet the Spartans" all the time.
Q: Do you think you are a better at screenplays or filmed movies? I notice you have a little of both, and I have only had the chance to "see" some of your films, not "read". Will I detect a similar style?
A: No, I don't think so. You may notice differences in dialogue and pacing. I think the main difference is that my scope, especially for written work, is a lot bigger than what I can pull off with a limited budget/time. To an extent, the style may be the same, based on thrills, but the script will have probably have expletives, which I can't really say at home, and the action will be much bigger.
Q: Would you say that your scope, as you called it, for your upcoming film "The Punisher" reaches for new heights, or does it try to charm us with "B-Movie" action and tongue in cheek fun?
A: Hopefully a little of both. The action scenes in "The Punisher" are an integral part of the movie, and I hope they entertain, but there are quite a few scenes in there that should hopefully elicit a laugh or high-pitched "Ewww!". I would liken the violence to something in an 80s actioner, trying to be intense and fun at the same time. Way, way waaaay over the top is how I would describe the violence, especially the deaths in "The Punisher". The Punisher himself is an increasingly grim character, but I try and surround him with entertaining elements, as to not drown the movie in it's own sorrow.
Q: I notice that A Sound of Thunder has yet to make a profit, do you often find it difficult to market your films, or do you think that the demand for action films and thrillers have died down?
A: I think A Sound of Thunder, specifically, was released amidst practically no ads or promotion, and I think it suffered from that. I am happy it hit even, so I've lost almost no money on the deal. Action movies and thrillers will always be in demand, because they are so easy to read, and fun. Who doesn't like shoot-em-ups?
Q: Do you suspect that the "Jacob's Corruption" will only hit even as well? Also, what do you expect from "The Punisher", and are you happy at how it turned out? Which is your most personal film, which is your favorite of your own?
A: I expect from "The Jacobs Corruption" that it will hit even as well. If it goes past that, that's good. I think it will, thanks to your review and the fact that it's gotten more publicity than "A Sound of Thunder" by far. I expect "The Punisher" to go farther than "Shattered Illusion", probably 20 or more tickets. It's a superhero movie, which gets big business, and an action movie, and one of the movies to be released under the brand-new "MR Marvel Universe". I'm releasing for as long as possible. I'm putting a lot of chips into "The Punisher" Also, my most personal film was my first, "Shattered Illusion", because I wrote it before joining MR and I also plan on filming it next summer.
Q: Do you think it is risky to put so many chips into "The Punisher"? If it does poorly it will be tragic for you. However, I, for one, can guess that it doing quite well, I want to see, and I'm sure many others do to. You wrote Shattered Illusion in a different style though, sort of, like the title suggests, with a shattered narrative. Can we expect any more films written like this?
A: It may be a little risky to put so many chips into "The Punisher", but I have no doubt it will pay off (I know at least 10 people will buy tickets... I hope). I wrote "Shattered Illusion" during a time when I was very interested in non-linear
storylines, and watched films like "The Prestige" and "The Killing", which are both non-linear. I don't think I'll write any more films like this, but you never know!
Q: It is known that you release many films, I believe you told me that you have two coming out in 1 week. Does this cause you any strain? Do you think it impairs your full potential writing ability?
A: I almost had two films coming out in one week, but I moved one film a week later. I don't think this causes me any strain, as I like to write fast and for example "The Punisher" took me only 2 weeks to write and "The Jacobs Corruption" was filmed and finished a few months ago, before I joined Movie Reels, as was "A Sound of Thunder". The only film I am working on right now is "Parody Movie". I only work on one project at a time. I think as long as I manage my time wisely and devote a few minutes each day to a script, I can finish movies quickly and release them in good time. I think I write to the best of my ability, and without any formal training or teaching on writing scripts, I don't have much to rely on other than gut feeling.
Q: Are you planning any future film that you anticipate doing well? Can you imagine a deviation from your style, as you described to me, to either please a general audience or satisfy yourself artistically?
A: I am prepping to write the "Untitled indy42 project", which is a surreal murder mystery taking place on a beach. It's a deviation from my usual style, and I am still trying to work out the kinks in the story. It's another one of my bike-ride ideas. I get a lot of movie ideas while biking to or from school, as my mind has the tendency to wander. I got the ideas for "Shattered Illusion", "Parody Movie", and now this from bike rides. The Untitled project is a straight narrative, however it involves both visual and auditory hallucinations, which become more prevalent as the story moves on. It's my most "artistic" script to date, and not chock full of gunfights and car chases, but rather on the conflicted character himself.
Q: And finally, for benefit of the show, how do you like "Casablanca and the Movies"? Do you think there is anything we can change, something we can add? Do you think it could be a long running show? Thanks for the interview.
A: Yes, I do think "Casablanca and the Movies" could a successful, long running show. It gives you a chance to go in-depth about different movies and personally I found it constructive in terms of criticism, which is always good. Maybe you could try reviewing TV shows, like for next week when no new films are being released.
It's been a pleasure being interviewed, Casablanca!
Well, that was quite a nice and revealing interview. And I don’t know about you, but I am interested in where his writing is heading. Now indy wrote Shattered Illusion and made Sound of Thunder as well as Jacob’s Corruption. He sounds like a director who likes to do a lot of different ideas, and since he said he wrote Shattered Illusion before he learned about MR, I think that, that style is the true indy42, as it is obviously a film that comes from his heart, it can form inspiration, and it is somewhat different then the typical film. In his upcoming surrealistic film, we may be able to expect a return to form, but until then we are with The Punisher and Parody Movie, two films which are “modern” indy, besides “classic” indy. Parody Movie is still in debate in my mind, I haven’t quite decided anything on it yet, however, The Punisher I know quite a bit about, and I even read a scene from it. I would like to, with indy’s permission, post a line or two from the scene to give you a taste of what to expect.
FRANK
I don’t like what I’ve become, but
I have no choice. The events are in
motion. I need to make make name
known in this city. Evil cannot
just pay the police and get
off. They have to deal with me.
SAM
Frank, you’re hurt, and you don’t
really know what you’re saying.
You’re throwing away your life.
Frank looks at Sam, the most serious we’ve ever seen him.
FRANK
This is my life. Frank Castle is
dead. The Punisher lives.
So as you can see, it is relatively dark, however, I think the action and the tongue in cheek violence will compensate for a little of it and make it an overall fun, thrill ride.
Also, I would love to declare that I am going to try reviewing some older films. I will include those reviews, first I would like to add a review I wrote early in my career you never saw. It is to a film called ”Hands of God”. I was PM’d it by the director, and wrote a review to him. Forgive the review for not being as perfectly written as I try to make them now, for it is one of my firsts.
