"Wonderland Serpent"
CLOSE on a clock just as it ticks onto ONE O'CLOCK.
CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM - DAY
PAN across a small room. Colored balloons are pasted to the bright and colorful walls.
A child's room.
"Runaway" by Dell Shannon plays cheerily as we stop on a little boy. His back FACES the CAMERA as he stares idly out of the window.
Just outside is a deformed old tree. The boy watches day escape him until he sees SOMETHING. It's small and leathery skin whisps through the grassy yard.
A SNAKE.
The boy perks up, carefully opening the little window. He climbs out and onto the back patio rooftop, his shoes grinding against the shingles making a god awful noise.
He grasps a large brittle tree branch and scales down, following the serpent as best he can.
Inside the bedroom the door opens.
SHERYL
Charlie?
Charlie?
The middle-aged brunette pokes her head in, smiling.
SHERYL (cont.)
Charlie? Where are you at?
Charlie? Where are you at?
Her eyes become stricken with fear as she notices the window open.
EXT. WOODS - DAY
Charlie scurries low between big thick trees and shrubery, clumsily tripping over fallen branches and potholes.
His eyes desperately scan the ground, struggling to keep up with the snake. It's alligator-like green skin pierces through brush, a thin and flawless red stripe curling around it's body.
As his speed increases, the CAMERA becomes a blur of tree, grass and sky.
Faster and faster until it finally...STOPS.
Charlie has exited the forest into an enormous brown and dry field. The grass stirs again as he races forward. ZOOM OUT to reveal his coming destination...
An abandoned train bridge.
EXT. FIELD - DAY
Marianne exits her car, looking out along the field, catching a glimpse of her son.
MARIANNE
Charlie!
Charlie!
As she runs through the field we see Charles ahead about fifty yards. He is walking strangely and not looking back despite Marianne's desperate calls.
MARIANNE (cont.)
Charlie, stop right now!
Charlie, stop right now!
Suddenly she trips, falling hard on her stomach. She grimaces in pain, holding her sprained ankle.
BEAT.
Marianne eventually makes it to her feet and hobbles as quickly as she can until she reaches the old out-of-use train bridge. It looks un-safe and is missing many railroad ties. The ones that are there, are chipped and weak. To her amazement, Charles stands directly in the center of the bridge. He stands at the edge, looking down at the violent water current below.
The scene is now becoming clear. The scene from S1 Episode 6 "The Red Herring".
EXT. TRAIN BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS
Marianne stares in awe at the seemingly catatonic Charles as she struggles to balance on her ankle.
MARIANNE
Charles! What in the hell are you doing?
Charles! What in the hell are you doing?
He continues to look directly below at the ravaging water. Not batting an eye at her screaming and pleading. She is now in tears, begging for him to come to her.
She slowly makes her up way to the bridge and even more slowly makes her way across it, almost falling in on more than one occasion. She makes it about twenty-feet away from him and holds onto a rail.
MARIANNE
Charles, please!
Charles, please!
He stares straight down.
MARIANNE (cont.)
Charlie, grab Mommy's hand. Let's go home.
Charlie, grab Mommy's hand. Let's go home.
BEAT.
MARIANNE (cont.)
Come on, Charlie!
Come on, Charlie!
Out of nowhere he looks directly into her eyes. An out-of-this-world smile then appears on his face.
Suddenly he lets himself fall forward and drop somewhere around thirty feet down into the violent river!
MARIANNE (cont.)
Charlie! No!!!
Charlie! No!!!
Marianne stares down in horror.
CUT TO BLACK.
A faint ticking is heard as-
CLOCKS: Absentis Vicis
Comes into view before slowly dissolving away.
