Okay, now, with the TV board a bit jumbled, I finally found my way to where I left off, so forgive me being late, and forgive all the jumble.
"Fragments" has been a good show in the past, a show which has garnered a high amount of tension in readers, it seems, and has made me impressed with each episode, blankly reading on with the assumption that it knew where it was going. This is the first episode that truthfully fills me with a confidence, a solid base, that it can easily enter a second and third season kicking. This is that one episode, perhaps not the greatest, but the one all magical shows have in which it transforms from a chalky entertainment to a storyline paved with complexity and depth; true storytelling, essentially, original and new. It has a goal now, and just perfect timing, as I am happy to see the show now has a target to hit.
Starting with one of the finer openings in recent episodes, we are handed some heavier stuff then the show has, lately, dished out. There is repenting, guilt, loss, and all the stuff you don't expect to find in an adventure/mystery crossroad. An excellent judge of writing, I thought, was to have the ability to take the characters in your project, and see if it is just as thrilling to watch them sort out their inner affairs, as it is to watch them propel the plot. This, along with the general tone, have given this airing a much darker feel to it, one I hope carries through, at least throughout the season. It is a much more mature, sophisticated feeling which practically bathes in fine-execution, as it handles its characters in a very smart manner; not as pawns, but as people, something that even the best shows often get wrong.
The pace really picks up at the later half, starting in the law office, and from the on out, it is a thrilling tour de force of action writing. Things happen quickly, concurrent, and create a suspense that, in this show, have rarely been matched since the start, where everything came to us slwoly and with great mystery. As the show gets better and better, it also stays close to its roots, which really differentiates it from many other shows that are praised or recognized here; it may learn new tricks, but it always seems the same old dog that we loved the first going.
Overall, it is my understanding that the finale is coming up, and if I am not mistaken, then I am going to go back and read the show again, as this is not a show you get oof lucky with by a casual viewing. It is a commitment and does take going back to, but I hope, and am sure, it will be worth it. I may even need to re-edit some reviews as I find more I didn't see, and apply new tohught to older material. Either way, I cannot wait for the next show, finale or not, and hope Daz continues writing with his always present gusto, and his newly found, darker tone.
