FADE IN: OPERATION ROOM.
HARRY
You saved him. You saved Jamie's life.
ERICA
Yeah.. I guess I-
BOOM. THE ROOM EXPLODES.
FADE TO BLACK.
FADE UP FROM BLACK.
Sophie is lying amongst the rubble, underneath a sheet of metal. She pushes the metal away and crawls out. She sees several other people also sitting up.
We hear people groaning in pain around the room.
SOPHIE
Jamie? Jake? Erica?
She turns and sees Jake limp toward her.
JAKE
What just happened?
SOPHIE
I don't know.
RINGRINGRING. It's the satellite phone in Jack's hand, ringing.
He looks at Sophie, who looks ghost-white. Carefully he holds the phone to his ear.
JAKE
Hello?
FIN (OS)
Ah, Jake. Good to know you are still alive.
JAKE
Fuck you!
FIN (OS)
Please, keep this civil. What I did was necessary. Maybe you can't understand, but it was needed.
JAKE
Why? Why did you need to blow us up?
FIN
A purge. The narrowing of boys to men.
Suddenly, Jake sees something off screen that makes his eyes WIDEN.
JAKE
No....
Sophie sees this too. She runs over, and we see-
ERICA AND HARRY, MOTIONLESS ON THE GROUND, A LARGE PIECE OF SCHRAPNEL IMPALING THEM BOTH.
SOPHIE
NOOOOO!!!!
Jake drops the phone and runs over.
Sophie
No! No! They're dead! Dead!
Jake bends down and closes Erica's eyes, which are still wide open in shock.
Jake walks back over, breathing heavily, trying to compose himself. He picks up the phone again.
JAKE
You assholes.
FIN (OS)
I came to warn you. In two day's time we will return. And we will kill all those who need to be killed. Any resistance will be crushed. I will personally put a bullet in your brain, Jake.
Jake holds his hands up and SMASHES the phone on the floor in rage.
JAKE
GODDAMMIT!!!
There is silence in the room. Martin walks over to Jake.
MARTIN
They say they are coming back, right?
JAKE
Yes.
MARTIN
I believe I can help.
JAKE
How?
MARTIN
I- I'm a mercenary. Gun-for-hire.
JAKE
Really? And how will that help us?
MARTIN
This has the basic design of a military stronghold. I can help locate the cache of weapons. They are bound to have one.
JAKE
You say you can find it?
MARTIN
Yeah.
JAKE
Okay. Grab whoever will go with you.
MARTIN
Right.
Martin walks toward a group of people who look relatively unhurt.
Jake returns to the bodies of Erica and Harry, and sees Sophie sobbing uncontrollably. He turns around and sees Jamie still sleeping, uninjured, with a large strip of bandage wrapped around his leg.
Jake walks over to him.
JAKE
Jamie.
Jamie doesn't stir.
JAKE
JAMIE!
Jamie's eyes slowly open.
JAMIE
Am I dead?
JAKE
Not quite yet.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
Martin, BEN, JOHN, and MICHAEL kick open the door to the testing room, revealing the charred hallway outside.
JAKE
Martin, wait!
Martin turns around. Jake walks over.
JAKE
Take this.
Jake hands him Fritz's gun.
JAKE
It only has a few bullets left, but it should take care of any stragglers.
MARTIN
Good.
Martin and his group walk into the hallway.
JAKE
Good luck.
Jake walks back and Sophie runs over to him, now composed.
SOPHIE
It looks like we have 6 dead. Three badly injured, the rest of us seem fine.
Jake sighs.
JAKE
Let's move everybody out of here, this room probably is going to collapse any minute now.
They begin helping some of the people out of the room. Sophie runs over and picks Jamie up and carries him out.
CUT TO: Hallway
Martin and his group run around a corner.
MARTIN
Should be around here somewhere.
Martin turns and KICKS down a door.
MARTIN
In here.
He runs in.
MARTIN
Here it is. All the guns.
His group follows him.
BEN
Wow.
They all pick up machine guns. Martin walks toward the far end of the room, and opens a door, revealing:
A HUGE PILE OF C4 BEHIND IT.
In front we see a TV screen. It flickers on. On the TV screen is... FIN.
FIN
Ah, so you found out little gift.
MARTIN
Ben, John, Michael, get out of here!
FIN
Nononono, If they go, I detonate. So please stay and enjoy my company. Michael, Ben, John, I have a little test for you.
MARTIN
What?
FIN
Not you, Martin, just your pals. So, Ben, John, and Michael, here it is: Put a bullet in Martin's head and I don't blow all of you up.
MARTIN
What the-
His group raise their guns.
BEN
Don't step any closer, Martin! He'll blow us all up!
MARTIN
I'm not moving.
FIN
Isn't this fun? Now see, Martin isn't just a mercenary. He's an assassin. He kills people for money. Good people. Not just bad ones. Puts a little lead in their skull. He likes his job, I bet. But he's a bad man. A very bad man.
Martin looks up and the screen and closes his eyes.
MICHAEL
How do we know you won't blow us up anyways?
FIN
You don't. You're gonna have to trust me.
MARTIN
Wait- wait.
Martin walks toward his group.
MARTIN
Don't shoot me.
JOHN
Stop moving!!!
MARTIN
He's right. I kill people.
BEN
Martin, stop!
Martin continues walking toward them.
MARTIN
Just one more person to kill.
Martin raises his gun and SHOOTS HIMSELF IN THE HEAD.
Martin collapses.
BEN
MARTIN!
There is silence in the room. Gunsmoke rises from the gun and a pool of blood spreads on the floor.
Beat.
FIN
Now that's cheating.
SMASH TO BLACK.
