SPOILERS
Over the last few days, I finished the show “Point”, and wrote these comments. I decided to save them, and add them up in one thread.
Point: Pilot (Part 1)- This was a very well done episode; and seemed to actually have a lot less action then I recall. There is the “Koyaanisqatsi” montage, and that is about it, except for the man being shot in the bank. My favorite character of this episode is, for sure, Johnson, who seems mysterious and powerful. I do like Tanner too, but she is not dived into as much this episode. My favorite moment would be the conversation towards the start that starts with education and then leads to the bag underneath the table. I like the whole “the stuff” bit. It was well written. Another favorite scene would be the ending as well. Overall, a very enjoyable episode but almost a bit too complex to be mysterious yet, so I will see if things are cleared up. I also liked going back to “8:03”, almost a flashback.
Point: Pilot (Part 2)- This is even a better episode then the first. It had many, many good moments. The almost eerie moment when Alex finds out Li knows her name, the ending with, again, a mysterious Johnson. It was, for sure, an episode with more tension in it, and more suspense. I think I like that aspect of the show better then the dramatic angel, actually, because it shows how well pacing the show has. It isn’t too long to trudge through, but is kept short and brief. Wonderfully written piece of work, and, so far, the best thing you have done.
“The Fence”- A very thrilling episode that offered a lot more answers then it did questions. Derek was really the main source of attention here, and how happy I am to be back to seeing Johnson with his flight. This episode felt different than the others, as it didn’t centrally focus around the bank robbery, and I am curious to see if the next few episodes will also be in a similar manner, creating more and more subplots. The “Mike” subplot is probably my favorite storyline yet. It was not as complex as the rest of the show, but the ending sure was great. My second favorite ending yet (Pilot: Part 2) being my first.
“…Of No Return”- Going into this, I was assuming the title referred to the point of no return Alex told Li about. I was glad to see I was right, because after last episode not really getting into the robbery, I love how this one went back in time and showed us everything from their view. (Especially the phone conversation with Alex, and how he learned her name). The ending was good, and was more of a cliffhanger then a twist. Johnson is a lot more in this then I thought he would be, and this bank robbery is really becoming complex in what is going on. I am not worrying yet, though, as I think you will explain; but it sure is a conspiracy. I loved the opening too, by the way. That and Marie, but I am left wondering if her final words (half finished) mean anything). I am also curious how big of a role Leonard will have in the show, if much of anything.
“A Wrinkle in the Timeframe”- This episode was relatively shorter then the others and really moved the story along besides opened much up. However, it does seem now then Johnson has a side schedule and his own plans. I did love the part with Johnston and the hostage, though, along with the snipers. It is little things like that which makes this show completely unpredictable. Even though it sounds like it is uneventful, I still say it is one of the better episodes due to technical reasons. The pacing was good, the opening was good, and there still was a nice, mysterious moment with Tanner and the man she shot.
“4:42”- I am almost getting frustrated with how confusing this is all getting! There seems to always be more and more to this plot, now with the least suspicious guy in the world, Gerald. I did think he would come in somehow, though, but it seems like a bigger part then I thought. Either way, I loved Johnson in this episode, who was really the main focus. The whole hotel scene is actually a very great segment. And it always seems like Johnson gets, as people say, “low class” hotel rooms. I love how shady he is. Overall, a very confounding episode. Thrilling too, but this one is a real brain twister. I need to go back and look at a few parts, I think. And I really want to know what is in the deposit box!
“The Body Under the Blood”- What an unusual episode. First, the fade to black. Second, how so much of it seemed to be history, and getting into the past. It was much more dramatic then anything in the show has been so far. Gerald was a delight in it, and boy was he in it! Quite a bit. I am starting to like Johnston, actually, and starting, also, to think that Lenny may now be one of the most mysterious characters. The opening was good, not the best, but good. The ending was fine, good as an unusually dramatic one, but maybe it is meant to set the stage for a dramatic inner demon subplot? At least this episode was a whole lot less confusing then the last one was, and it seems this was made to sort of fill in blank spots rather then provide tons of twists. Good episode, though, not a bad one at all.
“Blank”- I was glad to see that this was a relatively longer episode then most, as, right from the opening, I liked it. This also had one of the finer moments of the show thus far, Scott calling Derek, and then us seeing Scott later as one of the men who is with Tanner. As well as the ending, as it seems that this show is going to branch into organizations. I hope so, as I do love Derek, who is slowly launching his way to my favorite character. (Just behind Johnson). I like everything about this episode, and would, no doubt, say it is the best episode of the later half of the season, maybe the best. The bug in Johnson’s room was actually very surprising, as I didn’t think it would happen, and also suspenseful. Alex is finally getting a good role, the one she deserved. For a while, she has seemed to just be on the sidelines.
"All Good Things Must Come to an End"- First off, I love the letter opener being used as a weapon. I always thought that letter openers made the best weapons. Secondly, this was, by far, bar none, the best episode to date. It had it all and some; and clearly opened the wonderful plot of a secret organization. “Point” really is one of the finest shows on MR, and I grew pretty addicted to reading it, at least, I enjoyed how easy it was to read and how complex it got. It may seem breezy, and it is, but it does require thinking. I was happy to see what was in the deposit box, and shocked too. I loved the surprise, and think that it will be the stepping stone to setting up the next season. And I love the scene from “Blank” used, and then what occurs after. Thank god you use footnotes and clues, as it makes it so much easier to follow. Another thing, dear God! It was a massacre at the end! That made my mouth drop open more so then anything else in the show. A lot were killed, including Lenny, and more. A perfect ending to the bank robbery plot that consumed the season. And how neat was Johnson being arrested. The ending was also interesting. It is odd how the papers were burnt, since it seems that this whole robbery was for nothing, and now I am very, very curious as to where Season 2 will go.
Overall, this season marks, not only the best thing Indy has ever done, ever, but also one of the finest shows on MR, and its reputation is only bound to grow with Season 2. This is great, complex, and mature writing. I love the well-done characters, who are both human and mysterious. The show has a heavy emphasis on plot, and I am very happy it got nom. for a Reelie. In terms of what else Indy has done, it is a revelation for his writing career. I would love to talk about this show with Indy soon, ad when more people read, maybe we can do a film club of the week thing with it. I will list what interested me most from the season:
-What was in the safety deposit box.
-How the robbery would end up.
-Gerald.
-Johnson’s hotel room escapades and what he was doing.
-Marie, for some odd reason
I plan to start Season 2 as soon as possible, since the first episode is released, but this time will be replying directly to the episode threads.
