This is easily the best film I've read in 2009, I loved everything about it.
Without sucking up to Blag too much, just wanna give him a well done for writing such a story.
I've read the other reviews to see the general consensus and to see whether we shared similar opinions, turns out we do.
Right so the breakdown of it,
I thought the story was clever and interesting, I could relate to the character of Max, I sometimes felt like parts of Max's character were perhaps easier to write because of your past, I'm not sure if I'm meant to say that or if its already been said? I'm sorry, but I did feel sympathy for his character being so lost and broken,
I liked the character of Emma, but also felt she was a tad under-used, but I'm not sure how else you would have wrote her in more scenes, her character kind of similarly reminded me of my sister, in how she's always been like a mother figure to me, I liked how she so desperately wanted to be part of Max's life
I thought Helena was perfect, she was exactly what Max needed and she was beautifully written with these beliefs and I thought that their relationship should have been extended quite a bit, it did seem a bit fast for "I love you's" but I really was a Max/Helena shipper.
I did notice that Max and Dr Connelly had similar scars on their arms, which had me already guessing the twist, wondering if they were the same person, but I wasn't sure, I just wanted to find out.
I didn't really think much of the Danny character, I liked him and all, I liked how his and Max's relationship changed over a course of weeks and how Max finally got to stand up to the school bully, I liked the fact he was the MP's son which tied in nicely to the twist
One of my favourite scenes is where Max realises sneaks into the Connelly's house because he realised Dr Connelly was lying and we found Danny in the attic, that's pretty much the scene that had me gripped like wanting to find out more, not saying the rest of the film didn't have me hooked, but yeah.
It was an intriguing read
I'm gonna quickly move on to the twist, because I've been re-writing this review for about a half hour now, because I dunno what to say other than "It's great. See it NOW"
As I stated up there, I noticed something wasn't "normal" about this story when I read about the similar scars, but wasn't sure where it was heading.
I've read the Fight Club-esque comments in other reviews, and I agree to an extent, but it also reminded me of Drop Dead Fred, but in a non-humourous way, only because she has to take tablets to stop her mind seeing this guy, - kind of the opposite really. but yeah.
Amazing twist, I didn't see it coming and the scene where he re-enters the Connelly's house where it seems abandoned and the mention of a squatter made me instantly realise it was the tablets.
There's so much more to touch up upon I might save the rest for the FOTW thread
Now the real ass-kissery part;
I think Blag has a real knack for writing and think he should write more of these sort of films, I definitely thought it was fantastic because it was his first original film, and not a remake/adaption,
There's definitely talent here, and if I was to chose for a film on here to be made into an actual film, it would be this and Hanelle's A Moral Aroma
I would like it if everyone read this, because so much happens and it ties beautifully together and in a way, my only regret is not reading it sooner/faster.
I don't really have any negatives as such, except maybe the speech that Dr Connelly gave Max in the carpark was a bit too long, don't get me wrong, it was necessary.. I hope you know what I mean?
I'm very impressed with it though. It was a great read and I look forward to what you produce in the future.
I also think you're in for a big chance in the reelies this year.
I'm gonna rate it 9/10 because it leaves room for improvement and perfection to be made.
I think whatever amendments you make to this film will only make it better as it has the potential to be greater than it already is.
So you want me to write my address here or PM it to you?
You know, for the cheque you said you'd send..
