Sonic the Hedgehog
Genre: Animated (obviously) Action/Comedy/Drama
If I recall correctly, in the long long ago there was another TV series here based on the only character ever to give Mario a run for his money. That series, much like the four "real" cartoons based on Sega's pride and joy, was canceled. As a huge fan who owns nearly every single game in the series (excluding one that was only released in arcades), I think I know the problem. Like video game movies that go along with them, none of these series tried very hard to respect the source material. Video game adaptations need to be treated the same way as superhero adaptations (like Mortal Kombat did), and that is what I will do. I'm hoping that my faithfulness to the original will deliver what makes the series great to me to a whole new audience while also giving fans a pleasingly familiar yet original experience.
Given the seemingly young target audience, many people don't think about the surprisingly deep story that is expressed, largely without any dialog, through the so far nine (and in a week, 10) main games in the series. This show will use this story, taking parts originally written 15 years apart and tying them together to clarify and expand on the rich history. The average 20 minute run time (without commercials) will usually have each episode covering one Zone (or world, as they're known to non-Sonic fans) in a directly continuing storyline common to many Japanese anime shows and recent American dramas. Each season, having roughly ten episodes, will cover one game (starting with Sonic 2), with stories already planned for up to seven seasons, assuming the show is successful. Several episodes are already written and will be released on a weekly basis, starting with the pilot which will be submitted tonight.
The series begins with Sonic the super-speeding hedgehog defeating Dr. "Eggman" Robotnik's latest plan to create a robot version of the blue blur to defeat his nemesis. Eggman reflects on his previous defeat after trying to use the mythical Chaos Emeralds to power the ARK, a weaponized space station based on his grandfather's original, and get revenge on the government that destroyed the first one and murdered his family. However, after learning the reason the emeralds didn't work was that there was one he didn't know about, his ambitions reignite. Now Sonic and his new pal Tails, a flying fox and the only one who can keep up with the speedster, need to collect the Chaos Emeralds out of Eggman's grasp, free the animals he's enslaved to run his factories, and prevent him from powering up a weapon with the power to destroy the planet.
