After a round-trip flight from Chicago to London, Buck Williams and Rayford Steele, a journalist and airline pilot, respectively, find out that dozens of people have gone missing from the plane. When they land at O'Hare, they find that millions are missing, and it's all over the world. They both go in their own separate fashions to finding the answer to what's going on while Nicolae Carpathia, the President of Romania, uses this tragedy for his rise to fame.
