Ok, never been good at reviews so Hanelle forgive me if this seems a tad messy.
Right, so what we do on this site is post amateur work and review. I dont know about everyone else but when I start any work that isn't professional it always takes me a few pages to actually get comfortable and read it. For the ten pages or so of an amateur script I am really aware i'm reading something that someone like myself would write; which is usually something riddled with problems and some times messily written or not fully realised.
However, i'm often surprised by the level of maturity, creativity, skill and genuinely genius crafting that I find in some of the scripts on MR. The Warmth was the last film to wow me and SCF is one of those elite writers of the site that I can feel incredibly comfortable when reading there work. Hanelle is top of this list.
So going going into a Hanelle script I am aware that she is one of the best writers of the site and i'm going to have no problem settling to whatever world she presents for me.
Now for the film.
Hanelle has a gift for writing very natural dialogue. When i'm writing I sometimes struggle with crafting speech that fits the character. Hanelle even goes as far as to showing how a character pronounces a word. This is just one of those little micro features which made me feel so comfortable when reading the script.
Actually the script itself has a brilliant layout. Hanelle throws in a lot of little moments which are so unlike script work but feel so perfect in setting up the tone of what is happening. A personal favourite is when she swears during a description of a scene. Also, actually putting in music tracks for us to listen to is a great interactive way of helping a reader slip into the world she has written.
As to the actual plot... It isn't very often that I come across a film that I actually dont understand. I mean, I studied surrealist cinema and even understood most of that, so I feel kinda disappointed in myself that I didn't fully understand 'Route 66'. Its a grand story told on such a small scale. Its allusions to The Divine Comedy and this idea of breaking free of society and conventions drives the story.
I dont want to ruin too much of the plot but there is a scene towards the end set in the bar where a character offers some explanation to whats going on... The idea of being able to live out your sickest fantasy's and do whatever the fuck you like, no matter how sick or perverse is probably something we're all quick to deny. But how many of us would actually pass on the offer to do whatever the hell we liked and without consequence? The ultimate hedonism is offered in this script and it set my heart racing to read.
The overall tone and scene description gave me the impression of a 21st century Fight Club. Hanelle is our David Fincher and our David Lynch in this gritty nightmarish surreal tale.
I dont understand it, which annoyed me. I read it once. Then I went back and read several parts again, then I read the ending twice more hoping for it all to click in place. It didn't. But you know what? I shall never forget this film. Its brilliantly written and plotted and beyond interesting. I felt like some scenes were dragging me into a trace like state. I'm not sure how Hanelle does it but the script has an air of mystiques to it. I feel like I'm almost not Worthy enough yet to understand it. I feel somewhat like the main character of Percy; put through this nightmare without fully understanding whether I was in heaven, hell or someplace between.
I've kinda noticed this script is pretty vague but "Route 66" has kinda un nerved and shaken me. For a short piece of writing to achieve that is just such an achievement.
Something else that is annoying me is that I cant actually flaw the film. I'm trying to think of something that needed work on or something that didn't quite fit, but i'm in such awe of what I just read that I feel it was perfect. If anything, my only complaint was I wanted more. A lot more.
I feel like i've just taken drugs. Hanelle has such a good way of sucking people into her scripts....
So to summarize this slightly bizarre and crap review, "Route 66" is a mini masterpiece that has bested my feeble mind and left me crying in the corner of the shower, fully dressed.
10/10
