One Life
Episode #1: "Life and Death"
--------------------
(Cristo Pictures Presents)
(Fade to Dejon getting off his bike and entering the house)
(His mom, SANDRA MICHAELS, is getting her keys and approaching the door)
(When she sees Dejon, she throws her arms around his neck)
Sandra: Oh, thank God. I thought you could’ve been dead!
Dejon: The fight wasn’t that bad.
Sandra: What? I’m talking about that crazy kid that shot up your school. They weren’t releasing his name, but apparently some kids and a teacher got shot. Where were you?
Dejon: I was expelled for fighting. A shooting? They didn’t say who exactly got shot?
Sandra: No…you got expelled? I’m glad you weren’t there, but I can’t believe you g…
(Dejon is ignoring her and pulls out his cell phone)
(He dials a number)
(The phone rings a couple of times)
Wilson: Hello?
Dejon: Hey, Wilson, man, where are you?
Wilson: Hello?
(Dejon pauses)
Wilson: Speak up!
(Dejon sighs)
Wilson: I can’t hear you! Speak up!
Dejon: Stupid frickin’ voicemail.
Wilson: Don’t you feel stupid for talking to a voicemail? Ha ha! I’m not here right now or I’ve got my phone turned off so leave a message at the beep.
Phone: *beep*
Dejon: Wilson, this is Dejon. Call me back.
(Dejon ends the call and sighs as we cut to…)
(A grim-faced Melvin sitting alone in a room with a two-way mirror)
(He’s rubbing his hands together constantly)
(On the other side of the glass, detectives look in at him)
Detective #1: Kid’s psycho. No doubt about it.
(Melvin looks up and smiles directly at the detectives through the mirror)
Detective #2: Gives me the creeps.
Detective #1: He can’t see us, can he?
Detective #2: Of course not.
Detective #1: I’m gonna get him to talk.
(The detective enters the room)
(He sits across from Melvin)
(Melvin sighs and looks at the detective with a wry smile)
Detective #1: You’re goin’ away for a long time. You’re not gonna see your friends, your family. Your dad is on his way. You’ll no longer be living at your mom’s house. Your new home is prison until the trial and then they’ll probably give you the death penalty. Your life is over…because you ruined those kids’ lives and that teacher’s life just because they had something to live for and you didn’t. Got any religion? If so, when they give you the injection, you got nothing but flames to look forward to.
(Melvin laughs at this)
Melvin: I don’t believe in God.
Detective #1: Well, then, believe this. If you don’t get the death penalty, you’re getting life without the chance of parole. Nothing but bars, confinement…most inmates break down on the second day.
Melvin: Look…I don’t care. I really don’t. So please, detective, stop wasting your time. I’m tired of hearing you speak.
Detective #1: Then you talk. Why’d you kill those kids?
Melvin: You really want to know? It was…fun. It was the best experience in my life…to know that I wielded power over life and death. It was fun to watch them scream. It was fun to watch them die. It was so unexpected…that they would go to school and never come back. That they would die in their blood. They didn’t know, but I knew…and soon they knew. Have you ever seen a person know that they are going to die? The fear in their eyes is so poignant, so beautiful…so addictive. I even shot some of the students twice until the police showed up and brought me here. I’ve never had such a rush in my life.
Detective #1: You are truly sick.
Melvin: Not sick, detective…I am free.
(The detective gets up and walks out of the room)
Detective #1: He doesn’t even care he killed those people.
Detective #2: The father is here. He wants to speak to him.
(The detective moves aside to show the worried face of Ronny Martin as we cut to…)
(Dr. Mesina writing his son’s obituary with a pen)
(He starts to write it)
(After a few seconds, he crumples up the paper and throw it to the floor)
Dr. Mesina: One life. This is not real…this is not true…not my son. It’s not going to be my son. It’s not going to be anyone’s child. I’m going to stop it. I’m going to stop it. One life is going to stop it!
(Dr. Mesina leaps up and heads into the basement)
(The television in the basement is on the news channel)
Newscaster: Due to the high crime areas around Franklin High, it was unknown whether the shooting was a result of the gang violence that had been frequent there. It is know revealed that this school shooting is comparable to Columbine and Virginia Tech with 20 people confirmed dead and at least 15 injured. The shooter was a disturbed youth, Melvin Martin.
(Melvin’s picture flashes onscreen)
Newscaster: The police aren’t giving out much information, but there seems to be no apparent motive as to the shooting.
Dr. Mesina: Oh my God…Ronny Martin. The kid looks just like his father.
(Dr. Mesina runs upstairs, grabs a coat, and rushes outside as we cut to…)
(Dejon riding his bike)
(His cell phone rings and he answers it)
Dejon: Hello?
Wilson: Man, where were you? I thought I was gonna die!
Dejon: I was expelled for fighting Donny. Did you see the shooter?
Wilson: Of course I saw the shooter! He shot up my classroom. He killed Mr. Andrews. It was Melvin. He went crazy. He was shooting everybody! There was blood everywhere, man!
Dejon: All right, just calm down.
Wilson: Calm down?!? I just saw most of the kids in my class die! It was horrible!
Dejon: All right.
Wilson: Man, after this…nothing seems real. Nothing is as bad as thinking you’re gonna die. Not even Donny’s threats are big compared to this.
Dejon: I told you before, I’m not scared of him. Look, where are you?
Wilson: I’m at home. I wasn’t injured and my parents picked me up from the school.
Dejon: All right, I’m coming over.
Wilson: On a lighter note, Donny said he’s sending his brother after you. But the shooting is probably on most of the students’ minds so just be careful.
Dejon: Wait a minute. So Donny’s brother is coming for me now?!?
Wilson: Yeah. You sound concerned.
Dejon: Donny’s brother is gang-affiliated.
Wilson: WHO CARES?!? Look, Donny talks a lot of crap. It’s nothing compared to this shooting. Why’d Melvin do this?
Dejon: I don’t know. Look, I’ll talk at your house. I’m on my way.
Wilson: But…
(Dejon ends the call and gets back on his bike as we cut to…)
(Ronny Martin entering the interrogation room)
(Melvin looks up and smiles at his father)
Ronny: What…what happened?
Melvin: Well…I shot up my classroom.
(Ronny looks like he’s close to tears)
Ronny: Why?
Melvin: Ha…like you care. That’s funny, DAD.
Ronny: Look, I know you’ve been through a lot, but still you can’t do things…like…that! WHY?!?
Melvin: Because I wanted to. Because I liked doing it. But you wouldn’t know one thing about my interests, would you?
Ronny: No, don’t try that. This is on you. You killed innocent people.
Melvin: Ha…like I care.
Ronny: You…you’re a monster. You destroyed the lives of innocent people! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!?
Melvin: Because…it…was…FUN…to kill.
Ronny: That’s it?
(Melvin sighs and doesn’t reply)
Ronny: That’s all you’ve got to say?
(Melvin stays silent)
Ronny: Then you are dead to me.
(Ronny leaves the room)
Detective #2: Mr. Martin…
(Ronny brushes past them)
(Cut to him leaving the police department)
(He gets into his car and locks the doors)
(He starts the car)
(He puts his head on the steering wheel and begins sobbing
(There is a knock at his window)
(Ronny looks up to see Dr. Mesina outside his window)
Ronny: Doctor?
(He rolls down his window)
Dr. Mesina: Let me in.
Ronny: What do you want?
Dr. Mesina: The shooting…we can fix it. Let me in.
Ronny: Fix it? Are you out of your mind?
Dr. Mesina: Look…I can change things. Just let me in.
Ronny: How? How are you gonna change things?
Dr. Mesina: Trust me. Just let me in and we’ll drive back to my house. I have something I need to show you.
(Ronny ponders it for a moment and unlocks the doors)
(Dr. Mesina gets in)
Ronny: Where to?
(They drive off as we cut to…)
(Bartholomew looking up at a huge ship)
(Onscreen: January 1654)
Bartholomew: It’s better than I imagined.
(Captain Parter walks up and startles him)
Captain Parter: Well, good for that. Everything else is probably gonna be worse than ye can imagine. You ever been on a ship before?
Bartholomew: Yes, but that was small deliveries and the ship I sailed on wasn’t half as big as this.
Captain Parter: The sea ever given you any troubles?
Bartholomew: No…the delivery sea routes are always calm. It’s the same with any delivery route…including the one your ship is taking. Am I right?
Captain Parter: You really don’t know, do ya?
Bartholomew: Know what?
Captain Parter: Well, I’m not one to spoil the surprise. Just don’t expect this to be yer normal deliveries.
Bartholomew: I’m up for anything.
Captain Parter: Heh…the sea is more treacherous than even ye are prepared for.
(Captain Parter chuckles and walks off)
(Cut to Bartholomew entering a pub)
(He sits down in a corner with his drink)
(A man, DARBY COOK, sits across from him)
Darby: How are ya? My name’s Darby Cook. Heard you’re the new guy that’s gonna be on the ship.
Bartholomew: Yes, my name is Bartholomew.
Darby: Interesting. Ya know, I just want to tell ya, sort of as like a forewarning so that nothing happens unexpectedly. The crew, myself included, don’t take kindly to new folk on the ship.
Bartholomew: Oh really?
Darby: Yes, really. But, since we couldn’t talk Captain Parter out of this one, we’ll have to tolerate ye, I suppose. But don’t expect us to be yer friends. You catch my drift, boy?
Bartholomew: So what delivery routes does the ship traverse?
Darby: Ha ha ha. Very funny. Don’t be in the way, whelp.
(Darby gets up and walks out)
(Bartholomew is puzzled and takes a sip of his drink as we cut to…)
(Dejon knocking at a door)
(Wilson answers the door on the second knock)
Dejon: You look like you haven’t slept in days.
Wilson: That’s how getting nearly killed makes you look.
(Dejon enters the house and sits on the couch)
Dejon: So you don’t know why Melvin snapped?
Wilson: He’s a recluse. There were probably a lot of factors.
Dejon: I dunno. It just seems weird, ya know? Melvin may have kept to himself, but he doesn’t seem like the type of person to shoot up a school.
Wilson: Well, he did…and he almost killed me. He shot some of the students twice. I saw people die. It scared the heck outta me.
Dejon: I’m curious now.
Wilson: Curious? What do you mean, curious?
Dejon: Why did Melvin snap? I’m curious about that. Besides, he killed my classmates…almost killed you. I wanna know why.
Wilson: Oh, I don’t know…maybe because he’s psycho, ya THINK?!?
Dejon: I’m just wondering.
Wilson: Well, you can play detective. I’m just happy I’m alive.
(Dejon sighs as we cut to…)
(Dr. Mesina going into the basement with Ronny following)
Dr. Mesina: Hurry, I need to show you something.
(Ronny looks a bit worried)
Ronny: Why are we in your basement?
Dr. Mesina: It’s down here. Come on.
(They enter a room in the basement filled with desks)
(A huge cloth is over an unseen item)
Dr. Mesina: Here it is. I haven’t tried it yet, but if my calculations are right, this is the first working time machine in over 200 years.
Ronny: Excuse me…what?!? Did you say “time machine”?
Dr. Mesina: Do you believe in destiny, Mr. Martin?
Ronny: No, I don’t.
Dr. Mesina: But don’t you see? The car crash…our meeting, it all fits. You have to go back in time and stop it.
Ronny: Okay…are you sure you didn’t hit your head on the way in here?
Dr. Mesina: No, I am absolutely serious.
Ronny: So am I. You need a doctor, Doctor.
Dr Mesina: Look, just listen to me. You should go back to this morning and, instead of going to work, go to your ex-wife’s house. Stop your son before it is too late.
Ronny: Listen, I am getting tired of these games. I’m going home.
(Ronny walks out and goes up the stairs)
Dr. Mesina: Wait!
(Ronny turns around to see Dr. Mesina pointing a gun at him)
(Ronny freezes and looks at Dr. Mesina)
Dr. Mesina: You are getting into that time machine…and you are going to stop your son from killing mine.
(Ronny gulps)
(cut to black)
NEXT TIME ON “ONE LIFE”
(shot of Darby)
Darby: I’m willin’ to kill for that treasure. Understood?
(shot of Ronny’s excited face)
Ronny: Doctor?!? It worked! I went back in time!
(shot of Dejon)
Dejon: Time travel? Are you serious?
(cut to a man with a gun pointed out of the window of a car)
Dejon: Oh crap. Run!
(cut to black)
(gunshot)
