One Life
Episode #2: Scum of the Earth
--------------------
(Previously on “One Life”)
(Shot of Dejon and Wilson)
Dejon: So you don’t know why Melvin snapped?
Wilson: You can play detective. I’m just happy I’m alive.
(Shot of Darby)
Darby: The crew, myself included, don’t take kindly to new folk on the ship.
(Shot of Dr. Mesina holding a gun on Ronny)
Dr. Mesina: You are getting into that time machine…and you are going to stop your son from killing mine.
(Previously ends)
(Cristo Pictures Presents)
(Fade to Bartholomew sitting in bed)
(Onscreen: January 1654)
(Bartholomew has a book in his hand from his father)
(Cut to the words on the page)
Jenkins VO: My son, I am writing this to you before I die. It is for you and you only. Let no one else read it. This will document the time I spent on the sea and my encounters with various things that I can only describe as beyond imagination.
(Bartholomew continues to read as we cut to…)
(Darby watching him through the window)
Darby: So, he’s staying above the bar. He should be getting some sleep. We set sail tomorrow.
(Cut to scrawny person, FELIK JORDAN, standing next to him)
Felik: I don’t trust him. You think he knows about the treasure?
Darby: I don’t know. Whatever his intentions are, it would be best to keep him in the dark about everything…especially the treasure. If it’s what he’s after, he will ask questions that will reveal his true motives and, if it is what he’s after…well, we’ll just have to do something about that, won’t we?
(Darby smiles as we cut to…)
(The next morning)
(Cut to Darby and Felik onboard the ship)
Felik: Oh, I’m so tired.
(Bartholomew goes onto the ship deck and smiles at Felik and Darby)
Bartholomew: Hello. It’s a nice day for sailing, isn’t it?
(Darby just stares at him)
Darby (dryly): It’s a wonderful day for sailing.
(Benjamin notices his tone)
Benjamin: Well, I’ll be going to my cabin. I will see you soon.
(Darby just sighs)
(Cut to Bartholomew going below deck)
(Captain Parter is down there)
Captain Parter: Today is the day. You excited?
Bartholomew: Yes…very much so.
Captain Parter: You shouldn’t be.
Bartholomew: Oh.
Captain Parter: Your cabin is the room to my left.
(Cut to a rather cramped room with a hammock in the corner)
Captain Parter: Keep it clean at all times.
Bartholomew: Yes, sir.
(Cut to the massive ship leaving the harbor)
(Cut to Bartholomew resting in his hammock as the ship departs)
(He pulls out the book and begins reading)
Jenkins VO: After my third year of sailing the seas, there was a rumor of a treasure on the long-lost island “Agua De la Sangre”.
Bartholomew: A treasure?
Jenkins VO: It became one of my many interests, as it was known that pirates of the olden times used to bury treasures on islands that were not yet discovered. My motivation was ambition, but as my journey to find the treasure continued, I thought of the benefit for my family that these riches would entail. In short, the treasure became a deity for me and the hope for all my future happiness rested on finding that treasure. I now regret devoting so much time to it, for in doing so, I was never able to see you grow into manhood or guide you along the way. My choice in what the main priorities were in life was ultimately an unwise choice, and I realize that now more than ever as I think of all the years I’ve missed with my family. I am sorry.
(Bartholomew wipes his eyes as he continues to read)
Jenkins VO: It wasn’t until the fourth year that something of great import occurred…
(A knock is at the door)
Bartholomew: Come in.
(The door opens and Darby enters)
Darby: You didn’t watch the ship take off.
Bartholomew: No, I was resting up for my duties.
(Darby walks over and sits on the hammock)
Darby: Ya know, I’ve been comin’ off a bit…impolite and I don’t mean ta come off that way. Workin’ on a ship makes you a bit gristly, though, I guess. But I came to apologize for my rude behavior and, if ye have any questions, feel free to ask.
Bartholomew: Okay.
Darby: Do you have any questions?
Bartholomew: No…none that I can think of.
Darby: All right.
(Darby gets up and leaves the room)
(Bartholomew reaches for his book)
Bartholomew: What…what happened to my book?
(Bartholomew looks under the hammock, but it’s not there)
(Cut to Bartholomew’s eyes lighting up with realization)
Bartholomew: Son of a…
(Cut to Bartholomew bursting into Darby’s cabin)
(Darby is flipping through the book)
Bartholomew: Give me back my book!
Darby: I heard ‘treasure’ through your cabin door. What’s that mean, huh?
(Bartholomew tries to grab his book)
(Darby and Bartholomew begin struggling)
(Darby pins Bartholomew down)
(Darby pulls out a pistol and presses it to Bartholomew’s head)
Darby: Ye think you can come onto this ship with all yer little secrets and get a free trip to the loot? I’m willin’ to kill for that treasure. Understood?
(Gunshot)
(Darby jumps and drops his weapon)
(Cut to Captain Parter standing in the doorway, his pistol pointed at Darby)
Captain Parter: Next time you lay hands on Mr. Jenkins, I’ll see to it that you go overboard.
(Cut to both Bartholomew and Darby breathing heavily)
Captain Parter: Come along, Mr. Jenkins.
(Bartholomew grabs his book and leaves the room as we cut to…)
(Nighttime)
(Captain Parter and Bartholomew are on the deck of the ship)
Captain Parter: Yer father…he was a good man.
Bartholomew: You knew him?
Captain Parter: Yeah, I knew him. He actually used to work with me on this ship.
(Bartholomew’s eyes widen as we cut to…)
(Darby’s cabin)
(Darby is laying on his hammock asleep)
(Cut to the door opening)
(Darby opens his eyes)
Darby: Who is it?
(Felik is standing there with a knife in his hand)
Felik: I heard you say you were willing to kill for the treasure. Well…so am I.
(Cut to two other crew members flanking Felik)
(Cut to Darby’s eyes widening in fear)
(Felik walks forward with the knife)
(Darby leaps off the hammock and grabs his pistol)
(He aims it at Felik)
Felik: You don’t want to do that.
Darby: Oh yes, I do.
(Darby pulls the trigger)
*CLICK*
Felik: We emptied it. It was in the middle of the floor. We’re not that stupid.
(Darby’s eyes widen even more)
(Cut to Felik charging at him with the knife)
(Darby leaps up and grabs Felik’s arm)
(They struggle over the knife but Darby is stronger)
(Cut to the knife slowly being driven into Felik’s chest)
(Felik gasps for air)
Felik: Don’t…
(Felik releases his grip and falls off the blade)
(Cut to Felik hitting the ground)
(Cut to Captain Parter clapping in the doorway)
Captain Parter: So, instead of him killing you, you kill him. Well, that proves who the stronger is.
Darby: You knew about this?
Captain Parter: Yes, I’d figured you’d be the expendable one after your fiasco with Mr. Jenkins, but your strength indicates otherwise.
(Captain Parter steps on Felik’s body and extends his hand)
Captain Parter: Let’s find that treasure, eh?
(Captain Parter’s peg leg digs into Felik’s throat)
(Darby shakes Captain Parter’s hand and smiles as we cut to…)
(Bartholomew reading his father’s book)
Jenkins VO: One thing I’d like to tell you before I write about this perilous chapter in my life. I know how you like to sail…but there is one captain whom you should never sail with for doing so will only end in despair and treachery. His name is Captain Parter.
(Bartholomew’s eyes widen as we pan out of the ship to see Felik being thrown overboard)
Bartholomew: Captain Parter…
(Bartholomew drops the book in shock as we cut to…)
(Dejon in Wilson’s room)
(Words Onscreen: January 2008)
Dejon: If they hadn’t started year-round schooling at Franklin High, we’d be on winter vacation and nobody would have been killed.
Wilson: Well, you were fortunate to get expelled.
Dejon: It shows how no summer vacation drives people crazy. People want to blame video games and movies, but that’s exactly what is. No breaks.
Wilson: Whatever happened to just “crazy”? Melvin was probably born crazy.
Dejon: Possibly. I know you’re still shook up by that incident at the school, but what all did Donny Red say? Is he really sending his brother after me?
Wilson: He sounded serious. This was before the shooting though so it might take his mind off of it for a while.
Dejon: I hope so.
(Dejon sighs as we cut to…)
(Dr. Mesina pointing his gun at Ronny)
Ronny: Look…I understand that you’re going through a horrible time…but I didn’t kill your son. Melvin did.
Dr. Mesina: You’re going to fix it. You are going back in time and you are going to stop your son…or I’m going to shoot you.
Ronny: Listen, Doctor, please…you cannot travel through time! It’s impossible.
Dr. Mesina: Well, we’re gonna find out, aren’t we?
(Ronny slowly walks back downstairs)
(Dr. Mesina keeps the gun on Ronny as they head for the time machine as we cut to…)
(Dejon and Wilson walking down the street at night)
Wilson: I can’t believe you’re hungry.
Dejon: Look, man, we’re going straight to the 7-Eleven and back, okay? I just need a snack to help me think.
Wilson: Well, let’s hurry up. This is around where Donny and his brother live.
(Cut to somebody sliding the window open to Dr. Mesina’s house)
Dejon: Hey, do you see that? Somebody’s breaking into that house.
Wilson: Maybe they live there and locked their keys inside. Let’s just go.
Dejon: Why would they have a ski mask on then? Do you have your cell phone? I left mine at your house.
Wilson: No, I thought you had yours!
(Dejon sighs)
Dejon: Well, somebody has to stop him.
Wilson: What is wrong with you?!?
(Cut to Dejon walking over to the open window)
(The intruder is halfway inside the window)
Wilson: I’m getting out of here, man. You’re crazy.
(Wilson runs away)
(Cut to Dejon pulling the intruder out of the window)
Intruder: What the…?
(Dejon punches the intruder in the face)
Intruder: Hey! I’m not a fighter. Could we cut a deal?
Dejon: What?!?
Intruder: So you know about Dr. Mesina’s time travel experiments, right? We could split the profit 50/50.
Dejon: Time travel? Are you serious?
(cut to the inside of a car)
(rap music blares on the speakers)
(Cut to Donny Red looking out the window)
Donny: Hey, bro, that’s the one right there that beat me up! Dejon…he’s talking to somebody! Blast that fool!
(cut to Donny’s tough thuggish big brother, KILL, in the front seat)
Kill: That’s the one?
Donny: Yeah.
(cut to Kill pulling out a semi-automatic)
Kill: Don’t nobody put their hands on my brother.
(Kill rolls down the window and aims the gun out the window)
(Dejon looks and sees the gun)
Dejon: Oh crap! Run!
(The intruder and Dejon take off running as Kill starts firing)
(Donny laughs as we cut to…)
(Dr. Mesina getting distracted by the gunfire)
(Cut to Ronny grabbing the gun from Dr. Mesina)
(Ronny pulls the trigger)
*CLICK*
Ronny: It was empty the whole time?!?
(Cut to Dr. Mesina pushing Ronny back into the time machine)
(He shuts the door and it locks)
Dr. Mesina: You see the controls! Go back to 8:00 this morning! Stop your son!
(Cut to the inside of the time machine)
(Ronny looks at the time: 12:14)
(He moves the dial to 8:00 and shuts his eyes)
(Cut to the inside of Kill’s car)
Kill: I missed him! He had somebody else with him. Do you know who that was?
Donny: I don’t know.
Kill: Looked like they were breaking into that house. Scum of the earth.
(Kill looks into the rearview mirror)
(There’s a cop car approaching)
Kill: Man, somebody called the cops! We gotta get out of here.
(Kill’s car drives off as we cut to…)
(Wilson at home worried as he holds his cell phone)
(Cut to two policemen going up to Dr. Mesina’s house)
(They knock on the door)
(Dr. Mesina opens the door)
Dr. Mesina: Hello?
Police Officer #1: Somebody called and said they saw a break-in here.
Dr. Mesina: No, everything’s fine. Are you sure it was my house?
Police Officer #2: Do you mind if we take a look around?
Dr. Mesina: No, not at all.
(Cut to the police officers looking at the window)
Police Officer #1: Why is your window open?
Dr. Mesina: My window’s open?
(Dr. Mesina’s eyes widen as we cut to…)
(Dejon and the intruder walking down the street)
Dejon: So you weren’t breaking in for money or to hurt somebody? You’re breaking in because of time travel?
Intruder: Yep.
(The intruder, ANTHONY BARNES, takes his ski mask off)
Anthony: My name is Anthony Barnes.
(Cut to Anthony extending his hand)
Dejon Michaels: Dejon Michaels.
(They shake hands as we cut to…)
(Ronny in the time machine)
(The door hisses and clicks open)
(Cut to Ronny in the basement)
Ronny: Doctor? Doctor?
(Cut to Ronny walking upstairs)
(The sun is shining bright in the sky and the clock says 8:00)
Ronny: Doctor?!? It worked! I went back in time!
(Cut to Ronny walking around the house)
Ronny: He must’ve left for the hospital. Oh crap! I have to stop Melvin!
(Cut to Ronny running out the front door)
(He breaks the window to the car next door and unlocks it)
(Cut to Ronny hotwiring the car)
(He pulls out of the driveway and speeds off)

Ronny: This isn’t just about you!
Dr Mesina: But you don’t believe in destiny!
Ronny: I didn’t believe in time travel either!
(shot of Captain Parter and Bartholomew)
Captain Parter: We deliver certain packages, sail a few courses, plunder a few towns.
Bartholomew: WHAT?!?
Captain Parter: I said we deliver packages and sail courses…are you deaf?
(shot of Dejon)
Dejon: There’s only one way this can end. I’m gonna have to kill Donny’s brother.
