DEDICATION AND DETERMINATION
EXT. MATT'S FRONT PORCH - DAY
Matt's cell phone rings. Matt answers it.
MATT
Yeah? Yeah, I'll be down in a
minute.
Matt grabs his pencils and book covers. He begins to walk to
the school.
INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY
Matt walks into the cafeteria and is soon surrounded by
football players on the team.
ADAM
Hey, look at this little b*tch.
MATT
f*ck off, douche bag.
DEREK
Oooh, listen to him talk smack.
ADAM
Really not too smart on your part.
I advise that you apologize.
MATT
Screw you.
ADAM
Keep talking.
MATT
Man, shut the hell up, I will
knock your ass out right now.
Derek turns Matt around and punches him in the stomach. Adam
turns him around again and punches Matt in the face. Matt
falls.
EXT. FOOTBALL TEAM'S PRACTICE FIELD - DAY
9 MONTHS LATER
Football team is running the lap. The coaches are talking.
COACH JACKSON
You don't think that this plan we
have is gonna be going hard on
them?
COACH KAMPMAN
Personally, I don't think that
we're being hard enough on them.
Coach Kampman walks over to the team who has just finished
running.
COACH KAMPMAN
Time for some Up-Downs! On the
whistle!
Coach Kampman blows the whistle, and the team drops. They
get up, and he does it again. They drop again. He begins to
speed up, and they continue to drop and get back up. He
blows the whistle twice, and they stop.
COACH SCHNYDER
Time for your individuals! Get!
The team goes to different parts of the field, according to
position.
INT. LOCKER ROOM - DAY
Matt is sitting at his locker, towel around his waist. One
of his friends, Jesse, walks over to him as he gets dressed.
JESSE
Nice to see some new guys out.
MATT
Well, I couldn't play any football
recently.
JESSE
Couldn't hack it?
MATT
It's not that I couldn't hack it,
I just had a shoulder injury, and
I couldn't play for 6 weeks. We
only had 8 games that year, I saw
it as pointless to even keep
going. I gave up a lot of stuff
for football, and if I wasn't
gonna play, I wasn't gonna stay.
JESSE
I see. So what you do in your
spare time. You know, when you're
not at practice or in the weight
room?
MATT
At my house, playing Madden.
JESSE
Seems like you're a pretty big
football fan. Who's your favorite
NFL team?
MATT
Green Bay. Say what you want, but
they're gonna be big this year,
just watch.
JESSE
You live close don't you?
MATT
Yeah, like, right across the
street, you wanna come?
JESSE
Sure, I'll kick your ass in a game
of Madden before I go to my house.
MATT
It's on, boy.
Matt grabs his bag and they walk out of the locker room.
INT. HALLWAY AT SCHOOL - DAY
Matt is walking down the hall and passes one of his friends,
and one of the cheerleaders, Katelynn.
MATT
What's up?
KATELYNN
Oh, hey Matt. Not much, how are
you doing?
MATT
I'm doing alright.
KATELYNN
Saw you guys practicing the other
day.
MATT
Really?
KATELYNN
Yeah, and you guys have to get
your act together if you want to
win this year.
MATT
What's that supposed to mean?
KATELYNN
Well, you guys aren't at the top
of your game. It looks like
there's room for improvement.
MATT
How do you know that? You've seen
us practice. That means that half
of our team is good, because they
were running all over the other
half. It doesn't help that the
other half was JV kids, since we
don't have many Varsity guys.
KATELYNN
Hey, I think I'm entitled to my
opinion.
MATT
Never said you weren't but you're
turning into everyone else. You
have no belief in your football
team. I hate when you guys do this
shit. We work for the whole
off-season. Spend every moment
that we can in the weight room, we
do everything in our power, so you
guys can tell us that we suck.
The late bell rings, and Matt looks at the clock.
MATT
Shit! I'll see you later, alright?
KATELYNN
Yep, see you later.
Matt runs off and Katelynn walks off the other direction.
INT. COACH JACKSON'S CLASSROOM - DAY
Matt walks in. Everyone looks at him. He waves, and the
class starts laughing.
COACH JACKSON
You're late. You got a reason?
MATT
No sir. I have no excuse for being
late, and I'm ashamed of myself.
COACH JACKSON
Matt, you were late, it's not the
end of the world. Now get to your
seat.
MATT
Alright.
Matt walks over to his seat and Jesse sits right next to
him.
JESSE
We're not doing anything in here
today, in case you didn't
remember.
MATT
Yeah, totally forgot.
JESSE
Why were you late though,
seriously?
MATT
I was talking to Katelynn. Arguing
with her. She said the team
sucked, I argued for us.
JESSE
Why do you even bother to talk to
that freaking whore, Matt?
MATT
Whore? That's how you're gonna
handle this situation? She's
entitled to her opinion, man. I
was just explaining our situation
out. I don't think she's a whore
though, and I know you don't think
so, either.
JESSE
You guys going out?
MATT
No, she's with Donovan. He's like,
18 and in 10th grade.
JESSE
Oh, I know who you're talking
about. He's not a stupid kid, I
don't know how he fails to get
through school. Probably gonna
drop out eventually.
MATT
Maybe when they break up I'll ask
her out. But I'm gonna wait first,
I'm weighing my options right now,
and my chances with most of the
cheerleaders aren't looking too
damn bad to be honest.
JESSE
Which one you thinking about?
MATT
Probably gonna try to get with
Deavon, but I might try Amber,
too.
JESSE
Thought you might try Natalie.
MATT
No, she's a full blown out whore
if I ever saw one.
JESSE
(Laughing)
Yeah she is.
MATT
Hey, what are you doing after
practice tonight?
JESSE
Going to the doctor. Why?
MATT
I'm thinking about having a Halo
party tonight, and I wanted to see
if you'd come. The more the
merrier.
JESSE
Yeah, I'm gonna be busy. Sorry
though.
MATT
Oh, it's no problem.
JESSE
Alright, cool.
EXT. PRACTICE FIELD - DAY
It's the end of practice, and Coach Jackson has the team
circled around him.
COACH JACKSON
That practice was alright, but I
feel that we can do better.
Tomorrow, I want you guys to come
out here, and show me that you
want to win. Show me that you want
to take Blue Mountain out of here.
Show me that you want to win more
than they do!
Coach Jackson nods, dismissing the team. The players take
their pads off and start their march to the locker room.
EXT. GAME 1 @ BLUE MOUNTAIN - NIGHT
The team is getting dressed for the game. They have their
pads on and are getting their helmets on.
COACH JACKSON
We're here tonight! We're ready to
go! Are we ready?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Are we ready?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Then get out there, and take their
heads off!
The team leaves the locker room in two straight lines, one
right next to the other. They get down to the entrance to
the field and run between the two lines of cheerleaders and
the band. They go over to their sideline and wait for the
game to get under way.
ADAM
This is what we've practiced for!
Are we ready to show everyone that
we have what it takes? Derek, are
we ready to win?
SHANE
Yeah we are! Get yourselves pumped
up! Get yourselves all ready to
go! You never know when we might
need you, so everyone get
yourselves ready!
The game starts, and Milton starts off strong. The game goes
by and at the end of the 1st Quarter, Milton is leading,
7-0. The end of the first half, Blue Mountain is ahead,
21-7. The game goes on to the 3rd quarter, Blue Mountain
leading, 28-7. Bud, Milton's QB, drops back to pass and is
hit. He goes down, and he doesn't move. The kid who tackled
him goes to the huddle, giving high-fives to his friends.
ADAM
Bud, you alright?
Adam signals for Coach Jackson and the trainer. The two run
on the field and help Bud off. The end of the game rolls by,
the final score 42-7, Blue Mountain.
ANNOUNCER
Tonight's winner is: the Blue
Mountain Eagles. Congratulations!
Milton's team walks off the field, helmets off, heads hung
low. They go back to the locker room and change quietly.
When they get on the bus, a movie is turned on(they are in a
charter bus) and everybody is quiet.
EXT. PRACTICE FIELD - DAY
The team is getting started at practice. They do their
stretches and then huddle around the coach.
COACH JACKSON
I know that this wasn't what you
wanted on Friday night. I didn't
want that either. But this week,
we have a chance to redeem
ourselves. We have the chance to
get up to .500. We play our uptown
rivals, Warrior Run. Are we gonna
take that opportunity?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH HARPER
Then I want you guys to go out on
Friday night, give it your all,
and prove that we want to win this
game!
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Go with your position coaches.
We're testing 40 yard dash times
today.
The team goes to their position areas, and they do they do
their 40 yard dash times. When that is done, actual practice
begins. The team practices hard, and their conditioning
coach arrives.
COACH THOMAS
I saw you guys play on Friday
night.
Everyone on the team looks at one another. None of them seem
to know what they want to think.
COACH THOMAS
It wasn't the happiest moment of
my life to see that game. I think
that you guys have a lot of room
for improvement. Blue Mountain is
a good team, but I think that you
guys could have won that game.
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH THOMAS
We're gonna start doing daily
conditioning workouts all week
every week. It starts tonight!
Most of the players let out a groan or moan of some sort.
COACH THOMAS
I don't want to here you guys
complaining. If you guys want to
lose, be my guest, but if you want
to win, I can guarantee that my
workout will work wonders on you
guys.
Most of the team sits back down around him after hearing
this.
COACH THOMAS
One condition though, is that you
guys have to want to do this. No
half-assing it.
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH THOMAS
Alright, enough. It starts now.
Line up at the goal line.
COACH JACKSON
What do you have planned for them
tonight coach?
COACH THOMAS
Speed City.
MATT
What's 'Speed City'?
COACH THOMAS
You run 4 40-yard dashes, then you
run 4 30-yard, then 4 20-yard,
then 4 10-yard. Then you're done.
That's all we're doing tonight.
MATT
Alright. Sounds easy enough.
The team lines up, and Coach Thomas lines up at the 40-yard
line. They do their first one, and line up on him. They do
their next one, and line up back on the goal line. They
continue to do this. They then move back and do the same at
the 30-yard line. Then at the 20. Then at the 10. When
they're done, they circle around, and coach tells them how
he thought practice went.
COACH JACKSON
Gentlemen. You did very well
today, and I think this is a big
improvement on last week. I don't
just say this stuff either.
COACH SCHNYDER
He's right. You guys did awesome
today, and I think at this rate,
we just might beat Warrior Run.
That's what you want, right?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
I can't hear you!
TEAM
(louder this time)
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Alright! Then prove it, come
Friday night!
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Get out of here! Go get changed,
have fun tonight, stay out of
trouble, and come back healthy
tomorrow.
INT. WEIGHT ROOM - DAY
Matt is on a bench, lifting weights. His spotter, Jesse is
right behind him.
JESSE
This is all that you can bench?
MATT
Dude, I haven't been lifting
weights for years.
JESSE
You should have started earlier. I
don't think you're gonna start by
the end of the season at this
rate.
MATT
I know. I'm basically going to
live down here at the end of the
season. After we play
Montoursville, this will be where
you find me.
JESSE
Good, because you're gonna need
it.
MATT
I know. I'm gonna need the weight
room and I'm gonna need Coach
Thomas making me do those
conditioning workouts.
JESSE
Yeah, you gotta love Coach Thomas
MATT
Damn right. That Speed City
workout was the bomb.
JESSE
I guess I'm glad that one of us
liked it.
MATT
It's not that I liked it. I did
like it, but it felt like it could
do something to help me by next
season. You know, tht's what we're
hoping for.
JESSE
Yeah, hopefully we get onto some
amazing stuff though.
MATT
Well, I'm not sure about amazing
as in cool, but what I heard was
that it will get harder up to
midseason, and then it's all
downhill from there.
JESSE
I didn't hear Coach say that, but
I heard on TV that that's what
you're supposed to do. It will do
the least damage and you'll be
better off that way.
MATT
Yeah, I heard it on TV, too.
JESSE
Well, I guess we'll see how that
turns out. I've heard from some of
the older kids that his workouts
work wonders, and he's one of the
best conditioning coaches in the
entire state.
MATT
I heard that he gets his workouts
from the best guys in the world.
He goes to their websites and
stuff, and they have some of the
workouts on there.
Adam and Derek come down.
ADAM
What's up?
Matt lays back and starts to lift again, trying to make it
look like he's not ignoring Adam, but to ignore Adam at the
same time.
JESSE
What's up Adam?
DEREK
That's all he's got on there?
Damn, I thought I was bad.
JESSE
It isn't too much less than you,
is it?
DEREK
What's he got on there? 115?
MATT
(still lifting)
Yep.
DEREK
Yeah, not too much less than me
then. I get 135 out.
Matt finishes his set and sits up. He stretches his arms
out, and gets up.
MATT
Damn. I know I could have gotten
more. I'm too tired to do it now,
though.
ADAM
You three ready for the game?
MATT
Heh. Against Warrior Run?
ADAM
Yeah, you ready for it?
MATT
Hell yeah I'm ready. I've been
waiting for this game.
ADAM
You want to help us win, right?
MATT
I know I'm not gonna get to play,
but it would be cool to see us
win.
ADAM
I'm glad you're showing team
spirit though. A lot of people
think that we don't have it in us
to win any games this season.
Matt picks up two 50 pound barbels and starts doing side
shoulder raises.
MATT
I love the fact that they base
this judgment off of our first
game of the season though. I think
that's the best part of them not
believing in us.
DEREK
I know. I laugh every time I think
about it. It's not funny, but I
just love that nobody has faith.
It pisses me off to be honest.
ADAM
We gotta get our act together. We
have to go out there and show
everyone that we know what we're
doing. We have to show them we can
win.
MATT
Yeah that's the thing. We have to
get the whole team in sync with
each other. Even our back-ups have
to know what they're doing. That's
the trouble with it.
Matt finishes with the barbels and moves over to the leg
press. He hops down and positions himself on the seat.
MATT
We're gonna have a hell of a time
doing it, too.
JESSE
Yeah we are.
ADAM
Yes, you guys. But we have to do
it. It's our only chance to win.
MATT
Don't worry, Adam. I want to win
as much as you do.
ADAM
Good.
EXT. GAME 2 V. WARRIOR RUN - NIGHT
The team is gathered around Coach Jackson, as Warrior Run is
their coach.
COACH JACKSON
Alright you guys, here it is! It's
our rivals from up the road!
COACH KAMPMAN
That's right, losing is not an
option! Not an option!
COACH SCHNYDER
Everybody's gotta pitch in a
little bit tonight you guys. Each
and every one of you is important
to our team!
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
How bad do you guys want it
tonight? Or should I reword the
question... Do you want to win
tonight?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
What time is it?
TEAM
Game time!
COACH KAMPMAN
Tonight, I want you to go out
there, and play this game like you
want to win it. I know that there
may be some good blood and some
bad blood here, because we have
two former teammates who play for
them, but we need to leave that
behind us. Don't do any talking. I
want you to let the scoreboard do
that talking. You understand?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Then get out there, and play that
game!
The captains come back from midfield and announce that
Milton will kick off first.
COACH JACKSON
Kickoff team. Take somebody's head
off while you're out there!
Nothing better than to force a
fumble on the kick off, right?
TEAM
That's right!
COACH JACKSON
Get out there and do it, then.
TEAM
(Calmer than usual)
Yes sir.
(Game montage)
Milton kicks off, and stops the return team fairly quickly.
Milton forces a punt, but the ball is fumbled and returned
for a touchdown. Milton returns the next kick to the
opponents 12, but the ball is fumbled and recovered by
Warrior Run. Warrior Run scores again. This goes on, Warrior
run scoring fairly often, up until half time, 28-0 Warrior
Run winning.
Team is in the locker room.
COACH JACKSON
Is this what you guys want? It is
the second biggest game of our
season! It is our Tomato Bowl, and
you guys are getting your asses
handed to you.
The entire team has their head down, sweat dripping from
their heads.
COACH JACKSON
I know that this isn't what you
all want! I know you want to win
this game!
COACH KAMPMAN
There really isn't anything we can
say. You all just need to pull
your heads out of your asses and
win this God Damn game!
The team comes from their locker room and run onto the
field. Warrior Run watches the team go out, and they smile
the whole time. The second half starts, and Milton receives.
They get to inside the ten and Bud, Milton's QB, throws an
interception, which is somehow, returned for a TD. This
continues with Milton not doing much of anything, and
Warrior Run winning. This goes up until the end of the game.
ANNOUNCER
I'd like to thank everybody for
coming out tonight, the final
score of tonight's game, Warrior
Run 43, Milton 0.
The team walks into the locker room, heads hung low. They
sit in there lockers and put all of their game equipment in
the cage to be washed. They then go back to their lockers
and get their stuff ready for Tuesday's practice.
COACH JACKSON
I don't know what to say to you. I
did everything in my power to help
you out. A coach can't win a game
alone. It's all up to what you can
do! It was there, you guys had a
huge chance, multiple chances, and
you blew it. I just... Words can't
explain it.
Most of the kids leave. Matt is still sitting in his locker.
He is hanging his head in his hands, and Coach Jackson sees
him.
COACH JACKSON
You gonna be alright?
MATT
(Picks head up)
Oh yeah, I'm alright. Don't worry
about it, coach.
COACH JACKSON
Alright. See you Tuesday then.
MATT
Yeah, see you Tuesday.
EXT. MATT'S FRONT PORCH - DAY
Matt's cell phone rings. Matt answers it.

Are we ready to show everyone that
we have what it takes? Derek, are
we ready to win?
SHANE
Yeah we are! Get yourselves pumped
up! Get yourselves all ready to
go! You never know when we might
need you, so everyone get
yourselves ready!
The game starts, and Milton starts off strong. The game goes
by and at the end of the 1st Quarter, Milton is leading,
7-0. The end of the first half, Blue Mountain is ahead,
21-7. The game goes on to the 3rd quarter, Blue Mountain
leading, 28-7. Bud, Milton's QB, drops back to pass and is
hit. He goes down, and he doesn't move. The kid who tackled
him goes to the huddle, giving high-fives to his friends.
ADAM
Bud, you alright?
Adam signals for Coach Jackson and the trainer. The two run
on the field and help Bud off. The end of the game rolls by,
the final score 42-7, Blue Mountain.
ANNOUNCER
Tonight's winner is: the Blue
Mountain Eagles. Congratulations!
Milton's team walks off the field, helmets off, heads hung
low. They go back to the locker room and change quietly.
When they get on the bus, a movie is turned on(they are in a
charter bus) and everybody is quiet.
EXT. PRACTICE FIELD - DAY
The team is getting started at practice. They do their
stretches and then huddle around the coach.
COACH JACKSON
I know that this wasn't what you
wanted on Friday night. I didn't
want that either. But this week,
we have a chance to redeem
ourselves. We have the chance to
get up to .500. We play our uptown
rivals, Warrior Run. Are we gonna
take that opportunity?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH HARPER
Then I want you guys to go out on
Friday night, give it your all,
and prove that we want to win this
game!
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Go with your position coaches.
We're testing 40 yard dash times
today.
The team goes to their position areas, and they do they do
their 40 yard dash times. When that is done, actual practice
begins. The team practices hard, and their conditioning
coach arrives.
COACH THOMAS
I saw you guys play on Friday
night.
Everyone on the team looks at one another. None of them seem
to know what they want to think.
COACH THOMAS
It wasn't the happiest moment of
my life to see that game. I think
that you guys have a lot of room
for improvement. Blue Mountain is
a good team, but I think that you
guys could have won that game.
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH THOMAS
We're gonna start doing daily
conditioning workouts all week
every week. It starts tonight!
Most of the players let out a groan or moan of some sort.
COACH THOMAS
I don't want to here you guys
complaining. If you guys want to
lose, be my guest, but if you want
to win, I can guarantee that my
workout will work wonders on you
guys.
Most of the team sits back down around him after hearing
this.
COACH THOMAS
One condition though, is that you
guys have to want to do this. No
half-assing it.
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH THOMAS
Alright, enough. It starts now.
Line up at the goal line.
COACH JACKSON
What do you have planned for them
tonight coach?
COACH THOMAS
Speed City.
MATT
What's 'Speed City'?
COACH THOMAS
You run 4 40-yard dashes, then you
run 4 30-yard, then 4 20-yard,
then 4 10-yard. Then you're done.
That's all we're doing tonight.
MATT
Alright. Sounds easy enough.
The team lines up, and Coach Thomas lines up at the 40-yard
line. They do their first one, and line up on him. They do
their next one, and line up back on the goal line. They
continue to do this. They then move back and do the same at
the 30-yard line. Then at the 20. Then at the 10. When
they're done, they circle around, and coach tells them how
he thought practice went.
COACH JACKSON
Gentlemen. You did very well
today, and I think this is a big
improvement on last week. I don't
just say this stuff either.
COACH SCHNYDER
He's right. You guys did awesome
today, and I think at this rate,
we just might beat Warrior Run.
That's what you want, right?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
I can't hear you!
TEAM
(louder this time)
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Alright! Then prove it, come
Friday night!
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Get out of here! Go get changed,
have fun tonight, stay out of
trouble, and come back healthy
tomorrow.
INT. WEIGHT ROOM - DAY
Matt is on a bench, lifting weights. His spotter, Jesse is
right behind him.
JESSE
This is all that you can bench?
MATT
Dude, I haven't been lifting
weights for years.
JESSE
You should have started earlier. I
don't think you're gonna start by
the end of the season at this
rate.
MATT
I know. I'm basically going to
live down here at the end of the
season. After we play
Montoursville, this will be where
you find me.
JESSE
Good, because you're gonna need
it.
MATT
I know. I'm gonna need the weight
room and I'm gonna need Coach
Thomas making me do those
conditioning workouts.
JESSE
Yeah, you gotta love Coach Thomas
MATT
Damn right. That Speed City
workout was the bomb.
JESSE
I guess I'm glad that one of us
liked it.
MATT
It's not that I liked it. I did
like it, but it felt like it could
do something to help me by next
season. You know, tht's what we're
hoping for.
JESSE
Yeah, hopefully we get onto some
amazing stuff though.
MATT
Well, I'm not sure about amazing
as in cool, but what I heard was
that it will get harder up to
midseason, and then it's all
downhill from there.
JESSE
I didn't hear Coach say that, but
I heard on TV that that's what
you're supposed to do. It will do
the least damage and you'll be
better off that way.
MATT
Yeah, I heard it on TV, too.
JESSE
Well, I guess we'll see how that
turns out. I've heard from some of
the older kids that his workouts
work wonders, and he's one of the
best conditioning coaches in the
entire state.
MATT
I heard that he gets his workouts
from the best guys in the world.
He goes to their websites and
stuff, and they have some of the
workouts on there.
Adam and Derek come down.
ADAM
What's up?
Matt lays back and starts to lift again, trying to make it
look like he's not ignoring Adam, but to ignore Adam at the
same time.
JESSE
What's up Adam?
DEREK
That's all he's got on there?
Damn, I thought I was bad.
JESSE
It isn't too much less than you,
is it?
DEREK
What's he got on there? 115?
MATT
(still lifting)
Yep.
DEREK
Yeah, not too much less than me
then. I get 135 out.
Matt finishes his set and sits up. He stretches his arms
out, and gets up.
MATT
Damn. I know I could have gotten
more. I'm too tired to do it now,
though.
ADAM
You three ready for the game?
MATT
Heh. Against Warrior Run?
ADAM
Yeah, you ready for it?
MATT
Hell yeah I'm ready. I've been
waiting for this game.
ADAM
You want to help us win, right?
MATT
I know I'm not gonna get to play,
but it would be cool to see us
win.
ADAM
I'm glad you're showing team
spirit though. A lot of people
think that we don't have it in us
to win any games this season.
Matt picks up two 50 pound barbels and starts doing side
shoulder raises.
MATT
I love the fact that they base
this judgment off of our first
game of the season though. I think
that's the best part of them not
believing in us.
DEREK
I know. I laugh every time I think
about it. It's not funny, but I
just love that nobody has faith.
It pisses me off to be honest.
ADAM
We gotta get our act together. We
have to go out there and show
everyone that we know what we're
doing. We have to show them we can
win.
MATT
Yeah that's the thing. We have to
get the whole team in sync with
each other. Even our back-ups have
to know what they're doing. That's
the trouble with it.
Matt finishes with the barbels and moves over to the leg
press. He hops down and positions himself on the seat.
MATT
We're gonna have a hell of a time
doing it, too.
JESSE
Yeah we are.
ADAM
Yes, you guys. But we have to do
it. It's our only chance to win.
MATT
Don't worry, Adam. I want to win
as much as you do.
ADAM
Good.
EXT. GAME 2 V. WARRIOR RUN - NIGHT
The team is gathered around Coach Jackson, as Warrior Run is
their coach.
COACH JACKSON
Alright you guys, here it is! It's
our rivals from up the road!
COACH KAMPMAN
That's right, losing is not an
option! Not an option!
COACH SCHNYDER
Everybody's gotta pitch in a
little bit tonight you guys. Each
and every one of you is important
to our team!
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
How bad do you guys want it
tonight? Or should I reword the
question... Do you want to win
tonight?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
What time is it?
TEAM
Game time!
COACH KAMPMAN
Tonight, I want you to go out
there, and play this game like you
want to win it. I know that there
may be some good blood and some
bad blood here, because we have
two former teammates who play for
them, but we need to leave that
behind us. Don't do any talking. I
want you to let the scoreboard do
that talking. You understand?
TEAM
Yes sir!
COACH JACKSON
Then get out there, and play that
game!
The captains come back from midfield and announce that
Milton will kick off first.
COACH JACKSON
Kickoff team. Take somebody's head
off while you're out there!
Nothing better than to force a
fumble on the kick off, right?
TEAM
That's right!
COACH JACKSON
Get out there and do it, then.
TEAM
(Calmer than usual)
Yes sir.
(Game montage)
Milton kicks off, and stops the return team fairly quickly.
Milton forces a punt, but the ball is fumbled and returned
for a touchdown. Milton returns the next kick to the
opponents 12, but the ball is fumbled and recovered by
Warrior Run. Warrior Run scores again. This goes on, Warrior
run scoring fairly often, up until half time, 28-0 Warrior
Run winning.
Team is in the locker room.
COACH JACKSON
Is this what you guys want? It is
the second biggest game of our
season! It is our Tomato Bowl, and
you guys are getting your asses
handed to you.
The entire team has their head down, sweat dripping from
their heads.
COACH JACKSON
I know that this isn't what you
all want! I know you want to win
this game!
COACH KAMPMAN
There really isn't anything we can
say. You all just need to pull
your heads out of your asses and
win this God Damn game!
The team comes from their locker room and run onto the
field. Warrior Run watches the team go out, and they smile
the whole time. The second half starts, and Milton receives.
They get to inside the ten and Bud, Milton's QB, throws an
interception, which is somehow, returned for a TD. This
continues with Milton not doing much of anything, and
Warrior Run winning. This goes up until the end of the game.
ANNOUNCER
I'd like to thank everybody for
coming out tonight, the final
score of tonight's game, Warrior
Run 43, Milton 0.
The team walks into the locker room, heads hung low. They
sit in there lockers and put all of their game equipment in
the cage to be washed. They then go back to their lockers
and get their stuff ready for Tuesday's practice.
COACH JACKSON
I don't know what to say to you. I
did everything in my power to help
you out. A coach can't win a game
alone. It's all up to what you can
do! It was there, you guys had a
huge chance, multiple chances, and
you blew it. I just... Words can't
explain it.
Most of the kids leave. Matt is still sitting in his locker.
He is hanging his head in his hands, and Coach Jackson sees
him.
COACH JACKSON
You gonna be alright?
MATT
(Picks head up)
Oh yeah, I'm alright. Don't worry
about it, coach.
COACH JACKSON
Alright. See you Tuesday then.
MATT
Yeah, see you Tuesday.
