Plot
Anne Howard (Paltrow) has finally managed to get her hands on psychotic serial killer Jester (Cillian Murphy) after hunting for years. When interrogating him, she manages to learn about a tale in the unwritten book of the mysterious Jester; when camping out in the woods one night, a terrible turn of murder occurs which leaves a group of teenagers helpless an running for their lives. As the story unfolds Anne gradually begins to feel more and more uncomfortable and in threat after realizing that she really is in the presence of the ever unpredictable Jester.

Notes: The Story is set in a modern English Countryside town. All characters are British and speak with the native accent. Rashida and Ross are seeing each other.
Story 1
The scene opens with detective Ann Howard walking around the interior of a shed. Jester, in a cloak and mask, is tied to a chair in the middle of the room. Ann turns to Jester and pulls up a chair next to him.
Ann: Tell me why, Jester?
Jester is silent.
Ann: I’ve let you keep your little cape and mask, and now you are going to answer my questions or I will put you though pain. Understand?
Jester is silent.
Ann: Understand?
Jester is silent.
Ann shakes her head and wipes her face with her hand. Suddenly she lunges forward and punches Jester in the stomach.
Ann: O.k. Tell me how you did it. Just that.
Jester is silent.
Ann: How about why?
Jester is silent.
Ann:Tell me, Jester. Did you get a little kick out of it? Like the taste of blood?
Jester laughs.
Ann: You fucked freak? How?!
Ann goes to punch Jester again. A flash back begins.
Story 2
The scene opens in a silent room. A girl (Sky Thompson) is lying on a single bed. It is early morning. Suddenly the door bangs open and a group of friends enter. Dan Peacock, Rashida Lopez and Ross Fisher all enter.
Ross: Wake up bitch.
Bobby: Oi… monkey girl…
Dan: Bobby… (Moaning)
Rashida: Come on.
Sky: Piss off.
Rashida: Bite me. Come on.
Ross: Come fucking on. You don’t need to tart yourself up. So fucking hurry.
Dan: Sky, I’ll wait out side if you want.
Sky: Mmmmmmm….
Bobby: This is god. You are in hell.
Dan: God is in heaven you dick.
Ross walks up to her and pulls of the sheets.
Ross: Oh, nice arse.
Rashida: Oi!
Sky kicks her leg up and kicks him in the chin.
Sky walks out of a house. It is early morning. The sun is up. She has a rucksack. She puts it in the truck of a car. She walks back inside. By the doorway she shouts bye.
Bobby: Come on Mother Fucker! Get in the car!
Sky: Alright.
The car drives round the corner and picks up Toby and Ways who are waiting by a bus stop. They enter the car.
Ways: Good day everyone!
Bobby: Well you got screwed last night didn’t you! (Laughs)
Ways: (Laughing uncertainly) Yeah.
Ross: Who the hell is that?!
Ways: That is Toby. Some dick.
Sky: Leave him alone! Come in Toby, we don’t bite.
Rashida: Looks like he’s the one that bites.
Sky: Piss off him guys!
Dan: He’s alright.
Bobby: For a rat, yeah.
Sky: Come on Toby. One more to get.
Ross: Another person you never told us about?
Sky: I met him at a bar. He’s well alright. Apparently he writes music.
Ross: Oh… I get why you’re with him now.
Bobby: Does he play you?
Sky: Shut up! One: I’m not with him, and two: I invited him because I like him as a mate.
Dan: Yeah… mate.
Rashida: You better hope Ways don’t steal him.
(Laughter.)
Ways: Bitches. I don’t steal mate’s boyfriends.
Bobby: No, just your mum’s.
Ways: Funny, dick.
(The car pulls around the corner where a man is waiting outside a house.)
Sky: Be nice. He’s a bit quiet.
(Jason enters the car.)
Sky: Jason, this is Ways, Dan, Rashida, Ross, Bobby and Toby.
Jason: Hi, you alright.
Ross: Alright mate.
Rashida: What’s up?
Bobby: My cock.
Ways: Crude, you arsehole.
Story 1
Ann is pacing again.
Ann: Look up.
(Jester doesn’t reply.)
Ann: Look up now!
(She grabs Jesters throat and raises his head.)
Ann: Why? One more time. Just the why.
Jester: Why detective? Because he sent me. He sent me to kill and destroy.
Ann: Who sent you? Damn it, who?!
(Jester laughs.)
Ann: What sick bastard would send you to kill people?! What person could be so evil-?
Jester: Evil? Oh no. He is a great man. Life is the true evil. A cruel path that leads to eventual death. Life is evil. Death is our savior.
(Ann punches him.)
Ann: Are you trying to justify what you’ve done?
Jester: Justification…
(Jester begins to laugh.)
Story 2
The car is pulled over at a café. It is late afternoon.
(The group is sitting in a café.)
Sky: Toby, you want anything?
Toby: Err, no, no… I’m fine.
Dan: Hang on. I got to make a phone call.
(Dan leaves)
(Jason, who has been absent from the table, returns and sits down. He dry washes his hands.)
Jason: Any of you work?
Ross: I work part time for a tiling company. It pays for my student loan.
Rashida: I don’t work. Parents are loaded.
Jason: Toby?
(Toby looks up. He has been reading.)
Toby: Sorry.
Jason: That’s alright.
(There is a long pause.)
Ross: DO-YOU-WORK?!
Toby: Who me?
Ross: My god.
Rashida: Fucking hell. Yes you.
Toby: Sorry. N- No, I don’t.
(Ways comes to sit down. She has a bottle of water.)
Rashida: Is that for your fanny rash?
Ways: Shut up!
Ross: Isn’t it for your rash?
(They laugh.)
(Sky comes back and sits down.)
Sky: Where is Bobby?
(Bobby appears in the background.)
Bobby: I don’t know where I am to be honest. Although I think I’m gonna be in Ways knickers later.
(Laughter.)
Ways: You? In my knickers? Listen mate, I don’t wear boxers.
(Sky laughs.)
Ross: I don’t get it.
Sky: I do. Nice one Ways.
Ways: Thank you.
Bobby: Did I just get insulted?
Rashida: As far as I can tell.
Jason: Listen, if we go by this map, then it’s about another hour up the main road yet. Then the first right into some country road. Then we follow that to the end.
Bobby: Is that the map Dan got us?
Sky: Talking about Dan, has anyone seen him?
Jason: He went to make a call I think.
Sky: He isn’t by the phones.
(The group leaves the café searching for Dan. They find him in the car, sleeping.)
Ross: Wake up you lazy bastard.
Story 1
Ann: Come on Jester. I haven’t turned you in have I? It’s just you and me. No police, no tape recorders, just you and me. Now are you going to talk or not? Would you like to die Jester? I could get away with it you know. Killing you and leaving you here to die.
Jester: You can’t do anything too hurt me.
Ann: Want to bet on that Jester.
Jester: Have you ever heard of the chaos theory?
Ann: I have Jester, but what’s that got to do with anything?
Jester: They say-
Ann: That a single butterfly’s gust can cause a hurricane? It’s a theory, never proven. But what has that got to do with-
Jester: It’s like the ripples of a stone. One ripple could travel and grow. That one ripple could become a tsunami.
Ann: Don’t fuck around. Where is this going?
Jester: The world is the stone, my life the sea, the tsunami? (Light chuckling) me…
(Ann punches Jester again.)
Story 2
A car is driving up an empty road. It is late afternoon. Seven. Interior car, back seat.
Bobby: And then the fucker punched him. Do you remember that Ross?
The car explodes in laughter.
Ross: I would have kicked his arse if he wasn’t six feet tall.
Dan: You shat yourself.
(More laugher.)
(Front seat.)
Sky: Where is this place? The map said two miles down from the last turning, right?
(Jason is sitting next to her.)
Jason: Yer, but the maps crap, that’s why I threw it.
Sky: Balls…
Jason: I think we are lost.
Sky: Bull shit! What do we do? Should we turn around?
Jason: There’s a whole forest around us. Why do we need to go a park to camp? Wouldn’t the wild be better?
Sky: What about bears and wolves and shit?
Jason: Guys what do you want to do?
(Back of car.)
Rashida: Camp here will do. We can party loud then.
(Cheers erupt in the back seat.)
(Front of car.)
Sky: Err, I don’t know. Ways, what about you.
Ways: Hey, I’m easy.
Ross: That’s why Harris left her!
(More laugher.)
Ways: Fuck you.
Bobby: That you.
Ways: What?
Sky: Toby?
Toby looks up from a book.
Toby: Don’t mind.
Bobby: You sure Toby? You might wet yourself.
Dan: Bit of an adventure.
Sky: Well…
Jason: Settled.
Bobby: Party!!!
The car pulls up at the side of the road and everyone gets out with back-packs.
Sky: No phones.
Rashida: What?!
Dan: Part of the dare.
More laughter as they walk into the forest. They find a campsite and set up. Dan says he needs a piss and leaves. Later that day they are all sitting around a fire. Dan has returned.
Bobby: I’m fucking starving.
Ways: Yer, looks like it fatty.
Sky looks at Toby who is sitting to the side reading a book.
Sky: Toby, you want anything?

Ross says in a girly voice.
Ross: ‘No, fine’.
Laughter.
Sky: Leave him alone.
Bobby: Why is he even here?
Sky: Because I asked him to come.
Rashida: Why? He’s a freak.
Jason looks up sharply. He has been staring at the fire.
Ross: Arr, fuck him.
(Toby mutters.)
Ross: What’s that?
Rashida: I think he insulted you. Sorry Hard nut.
(Ross gets up and walks over to Toby.)
Ways: Oh, leave him.
Rashida: Hit him.
Dan: Leave him alone man.
Bobby: If the freak wants to be hard then let them fight.
Sky: Toby, if he hits you hit him back.
Ross: Oi, who’s side are you on here?
(Dan gets up and stands in front of Toby.)
Dan: Leave off him man.
Ross: What ever.
(Ross sits back down.)
(Sky leaves the fire and goes over to Toby.)
Sky: You should stand up for yourself.
Toby: I don’t like trouble. And besides, my dad always used to say: "people like that always get what’s coming to them."
Sky: Yeah, but Ross isn’t going away is he? He’s here for the next few days just like you.
(Sky leaves Toby and sits besides Dan.)
Sky: Thanks for sticking up for him, Dan.
Dan: I don’t like bullies man. Ross may be my mate but I don’t like him bullying anyone.
Jason: I’m going for a piss.
(Jason leaves.)
Bobby: I need food… is that thing done?
(He points to a pot over the fire.)
Ways: Has it been an hour? Fucking no, so don’t ask dip shit.
Rashida: Big speech for a little innocent girl.
(Everyone laughs.)
Ways: Shut up! That was a mistake. You wankers!
Dan: I don’t get it.
Bobby: You isn’t heard the story? When we were in Amsterdam, in a club Ways was stripping on a pole, this crazy old man jumped up on stage and announced that she was just a little lost girl and we should stop staring at her.
Rashida: Or God will be angry!
(They all explode in laugher except Sky, Dan and Toby.)
(Later that night only Sky and Ways are left by the dieing fire.)
Sky: You don’t have much luck do you?
Way: What do you mean by that?
Sky: Don’t worry… I noticed you eying up Jason earlier.
(Ways looks around.)
Ways: He’s so hot. Is he single? He’s one of your friends right?
Sky: Really, I don’t know. I met him at work and we’ve kinda been friends ever since. He’s never asked for more and neither have I.
Ways: You mean relationship wise.
Sky: No! Anyway, his name might not even be Jason for all I know.
Ways: What do you mean by that?
Sky: Well sometimes he does respond to that name.
(The camera pans to Toby playing Chess with Dan.)
Dan: Your move.
Toby: Check mate.
Dan: What? Where?
Toby: There.
Dan: Good game. I’ve got to go a piss.
(Sky walks over to Toby. He gets up.)
Sky: He must have drank a gallon at that café. All he does is piss.
Toby: Yeah… I… I got to go. I’ll be back!
Sky: Calm down. Take your time.
(Sky shakes her head as Toby walks away.)
Story 1
Ann has pulled up a chair and is looking at Jester.
Ann: How do you kill? How can you pick up a knife a stab someone?
Jester: Even the strong minded are prone to insanity. In one sense, I could argue that we are all slightly mad. But it knows that you are mad. That’s when you can control it.
Ann: You really believe that? You’re ill. You need to be sectioned.
Jester: Fear life, for that is the true face of evil.
Ann: What?
Jester: When the darkness consumes your soul, that’s when you find peace.
Ann: Do you believe in God?
Jester (smiling): If there is a god, then I would be dead. I think my master would like you.
Ann: Did someone hire you to kill them?
Jester: Brings a whole new meaning to blood money, doesn’t it?
Ann: I can see myself killing you tonight. Stop fucking around!
Jester: I don’t need sexual pleasure.
Ann: You ill bastard.
Story 2
The group are split apart talking with each other.
(Sky is singing)
(Ross and Bobby are rapping)
(Ways is writing on a piece of paper.)
(Rashida is singing)
(Jason is on his own writing new to Toby.)
Jason: I call it ‘Harmony of the Night’. Like it?
Toby: Well… it’s alright.
Jason: You don’t like it.
Toby: No, no… its o.k.…
(Ways comes over.)
Jason: Help me out here. He’s useless.
Ways: Sure.
Jason: Can you read music?
Ways: Yep.
Jason: Read this. Tell me what you think.
(Jason gives Ways a sheet of music.)
(Ways brow creases in interest as she reads.)
Ways: It’s beautiful…
Jason: Thanks.
Ways: Did you write this?
Jason: Kind of. A friend of a friend helped we write it.
Ways: It’s so deep. Emotional yet, in a good way, lacking personal views. What’s it called?
Jason: Harmony of the Night.
Ways: No, no…it’s going on about a mercy killing right? A wife killing her dieing husband? Hmm…. How about… Bloodless Harmony?
Ross (shouting): How about Blood Harmony?! Like your knickers!
Bobby (shouting): Full of blood. Screaming a harmony when you’re on the loo!
Ways: Shut up dick. Not funny!
Jason: A bit… nah, its good. But I didn’t intend to sing the notes though.
Ways: I was gonna say. There well high.
Ross: Like your tits!
Ways: Your not even making any sense with your insults now, you sad fanny.
Bobby: Did you just call us a ‘fanny’?
(Ross and Bobby burst out laughing.)
(A figure can be seen in the background watching them all.)
(Later that night the tents have been set up.)
(Ross is sitting by the camp fire. He hears a rustle. He turns sharply. He sees a figure and smiles he walks over to the trees…)
Story 1
Ann is pacing.
Ann: So, you kill them and then leave a little nice trail for the police to follow.
Jester: Kill? That’s such a harsh word…
Ann: But we find that it’s a dead end and we are back to the beginning. Do you ever feel guilty about your killings, Butchering? You know, I would love to get into your head. You know that? Do you like what you do?
Jester: Do you know what goes on in my head? A little saying that says: ‘fuck you’.
Ann: So you want to be difficult, do you? O.k., o.k.
(Ann punches Jester again.)
Jester: I kill because he sent me. It gives me pleasure. I don’t need sex. One death and I feel whole again. I enjoy watching people brake under my thumb.
(Ann punches Jester twice.)
Ann: Don’t fuck with me!!! Now, do you like pain?
(Jester laughs.)
Ann: Do you like pain? Answer my fucking questions!
Jester: I’ll let you on in a little secret.
(Ann leads forward.)
Jester: I am pain…
Story 2
It is morning. Dan is up and playing another game of chess with Toby. Jason is watching.
Dan: Shit. You win.
Toby: It’s your strategy. You don’t start of with one but make one as the game begins to shape. But by that time I have the upper hand.
Dan: O.k. o.k. don’t rub it in. Do you play Jason?
Jason: A bit.
Toby: I will give you a game.
Jason: Na, I’m o.k.
(Sky walks past)
Sky: Go on.
Jason: Alright, alright…
(Jason and Toby talk as the game progresses.)
Toby: What do you work as?
Jason: I work as a waiter with Sky.
Toby: Oh, o.k.
Jason: How do you know Sky?
Toby: She and I went to the same Primary School, secondary school and now the same college. Our mothers have been friends for ages.
Jason: Cool.
Toby: So where are you from?
Jason: All over really.
Toby: Checkmate.
Jason: I believe not.
Toby: Well seen.
Jason: So what courses are you taking?
Toby: Literature is my main and favorite course.
Jason: Right.
Toby: Checkmate.
Jason (smiling): Good game. Another?
(Toby looks up at Ross. Ross points his head into the bushes.)
Toby: Err no… I need to go… a piss. I need to go a piss.
(Toby leaves. Ross sinks into the forest.)
Dan: Correct me if I’m wrong but, couldn’t you of won there?
Jason: Yes I could of.
(Rashida is behind a tent looking up at the trees. She is drawing. Bobby approaches her.)
Bobby (standing over her): I’m feeling horny.
(Rashida smiles seductively. She gets up and wraps her arms around him.)
Rashida: What about Ross?
Bobby: He went off into the forest.
Rashida: Good. I didn’t think we would have a single moment together.
(Rashida goes down on Bobby’s buckle, the begin to kiss seductively, she is wearing skirt and you see her throw her knickers on the floor, Bobby gets on top of her and they start to have sex.)
Loud voice: Where is Rashida?
Bobby: Shit!
Rashida: I thought you said he was gone?
Bobby: He was.
(They stop having sex and Bobby runs off. Rashida pulls her knickers up.)
(Ross pokes his head around the tent. He sees Rashida.)
Ross: There you are.
Rashida: I thought you went of exploring.
Ross: I did.
Rashida: What? (She pauses for a minute, then looks at Ross) You wanna do it?
(Ross looks disgusted)
Ross: No!
Rashida: Oh Come on baby, we haven’t had it since last Saturday.
Ross: NO!
Rashida: Alright!
Ross: Not now. I got to go get changed…
(Ross walks off.)

Story 2
Ann is facing Jester again.
Ann: So here we are. And me beating the crap out of you. I should really stop that.
Jester: Did anger and grief momentarily blind your sense of sanity?
Ann: I though there was no such thing as sanity?
(Jester begins to chuckle)
Jester: You’re learning.
Ann: You’re not.
(Ann punches him again)
Jester: I swear I’m-
Ann: Oh? I’m sorry. Is it hurting now? Is it beginning to hurt?
Jester: Hurt? No… make me want to tear your throat out? Yes.
Ann: You’re in no position to threaten me.
Jester: You think I’m here because of you? Oh no. I’m here because I chose to be.
Ann: What? You keep telling yourself that.
(Suddenly Jester lurches at her. He knocks her onto the floor. He comes close to her face.)
Jester: So why not finish me detective? No, no… the curiosity of the conscious mind holds you to me like glue. Your mind is weak Ann. That’s your biggest flaw.
Ann: Yours is that you don’t learn your lessons well.
(Ann head butts Jester. He falls back.)
Story 2
The fire is small and everyone is in their tents apart from Bobby and Ways. Ways is looking up at the stars. A twig snaps and she spins around. Jason appears out of the forest behind her.
Jason: Ways. I got your note.
Ways: Yer… Jason… I really like you and-
(Ways grabs Jason’s leg.)
Jason: Ways, I can’t: I don’t like you like that. I mean, we met this morning.
Ways: All I’m asking for is a shag.
Jason: I’m gonna go.
(Jason walks over to Bobby. He calls him.)
(Bobby jumps and turns around.)
(Jason sits next to Bobby.)
(Bobby offers Jason a cigarette. Jason refuses.)
Bobby: So your Sky’s friend right? She invited you.
Jason: Yeah.
Bobby: You like her.
Jason: She’s a good friend.
Bobby: You know what I mean.
Jason: No.
(Ways is seen getting into her tent.)
(There is a long silence.)
(Bobby looks over Jason’s shoulder and sees a figure in the forest.)
Bobby: Look, look did you see that?!
Jason: See what?
Jason turns around there is no one there.
Jason: What did you see?
Bobby: I saw someone in the trees. They were looking at me!
Jason: Well-
Bobby runs off into the forest.
Jason: Bobby! What are you doing?
(Jason runs after Bobby.)
Interior tent.
Rashida and Sky are sharing a tent.
Rashida hears a noise.
(Rashida jolts awake.)
Rashida: Sky, Sky!
Sky (Mumbling): What…?
Rashida: Did you hear that?
Sky: Hear what?
Rashida: That shout!
Sky: Have you got drugs on you?
Rashida: No! There was someone shouting.
Sky: Yeah…
Rashida: Sky!
Sky: Go back to sleep!
(Later, there is a scream.)
(Both of the girls jolt awake.)
Rashida: You can’t tell me you never heard that.
(Everyone runs out to the centre of the camp.)
Rashida: What the fuck was that?!
Sky: Where’s Jason?
Rashida: And Bobby. He didn’t come back to the tent.
(There is a second scream.)
(They all look towards the forest.)
Ways: They must be in the forest.
(Ross comes out of the bushes.)
Sky: Where have you been?
Ross: A shit. Get the Swiss knife and let’s go.
(Toby sneaks out of the bushes into the group.)
Rashida: I told you. Bloody bears. A Swiss knife isn’t going to do anything.
Toby: Bears are usually scared of loud noises, if-
Ross: Shut up prick. If a bear sees you it’s going to charge and kill.
Dan: Ross-
Ross: No! I aint having that prick stand there and tell a big bastard bear aint going to kill on site! No fucking noise is going to scare a bear away!
Dan: Ross-
Ross: What!
Dan: He is reading a survival guide book.
(Ross looks between Dan and Toby.)
Ross: Oh.
Sky: We should go after them.
(Sky walks of. The others look between themselves and slowly follow.)
(Dan runs to catch up with Sky.)
Dan: Sky. Look shouldn’t we wait for morning? They might have just thought they saw something.
Sky: Like what? A bear?
Dan: Come on. Just wait till morning.
Sky: Fine.
Dan: Good.
Sky: I’m going to go look for them myself. I’ll search for an hour and then come back.
Dan: What?! I’ll come with you.
Rashida: No Dan. Please stay here.
(Rashida grabs his arm.)
Rashida: You too Sky.
Sky: Ross, give me your knife.
(Ross hands it over.)
Sky: My dad was once attacked by a bear. He taught me how to defend myself against them. Toby was right about the noises.
(Sky slips of into the night shadows.)
Dan: Shit!
Ross: Come on mate.
Dan: How can you let her go alone?! We’re the damn men! What if the bear kills her?
Ross: Don’t be like that. It was her choice. Bobby’s my mate too. He’s probably playing a prank.
Dan: What? With a man he has just met?
Ross: Well, that Jason fella seemed a bit weird anyway.
Rashida: You leave him alone!
(Dan pulls free of Rashida and slips of into the forest.)
(Sky is running though the forest. She stops when she sees something on the floor. It’s Jason’s sheet music.)
Sky: Damn it! Jason!!!
(She continues to run. Finally she comes to a clearing. There is a bush ahead. She hears rustling. She approaches the bush. She pulls it back. She sees a figure. She goes to shout when a gleam catches her eye. There person is holding a knife. She sinks back into the bushes and watches. The figure slumps a body over there shoulder. Bobby’s face catches the moonlight. Sky covers her mouth in shock and scrambles back into the bushes.)
(The figure jumps out to where Sky just was. It looks around before sinking back into the bushes.)
(Sky can be seen hiding behind a tree, covering her mouth.)
Story 1
Ann is sitting facing Jester.
Ann: So why the name ‘Jester’?
Jester: I like games.
Ann: I don’t suppose you like losing.
Jester: I always win.
(Ann laughs.)
Ann: You aren’t winning now.
Jester: Oh, I am. You don’t know it yet but for you its games over.
Ann: Are you threatening me again, Jester?
Jester: No, I’m making a promise. I will make you pay detective…
(There is a silence.)
Ann: you lose Jester. I have you tied up. No police to stop me from killing you. And I do plan to kill you by the way.
(Ann smiles.)
Jester: Ways… yes that was one of there names. She spilled like a pig.
(Jester laughs. Ann punches him.)
Story 1
Back at the camp. It is early morning.
(Rashida is biting her nails looking into the forest. Suddenly Ross busts out of the bushes.)
Rashida: You bastard! You scared a sit load out of me!
(Toby can be seen coming out the forest too.)
Ross: Where the fuck are they?!
Rashida: I don’t fucking know! Why did you leave me alone?!
Ross: Come on. We’re going back to the cars.
(Ross begins looking though the things on the floor)
Toby: What about Sky and-
Ross: Shut up, fuck ass!
Rashida: No! We wait!
Ross: Fuck waiting! What if that bear smells the food we cooked last night? What if it comes here? I can’t see Toby wrestling with a bear, can you?
(Ways comes out of her tent.)
Ways: Listen, I’m crapping myself but I really don’t think that there are bears in this area.
Ross: Fuck off! You heard those screams!
Ways: What if it wasn’t Bears?
Ross: Oh no, it was the magical fairies from the magical city of Bullshit! Where’s the damn compass?!
Ways: Well, what if it was a person…?
Rashida: I think that Bobby had it.
Ross: Shit…
Ways (emotionally): Hey! What if it was..?
Ross: Was what?
Ways: What if it was a person?
Ross: Yeah, the bloody countryside killer. I can see it now. Stupid slag.
Ways: Piss of you prick! People might be dead and you are mucking around!
(Ross lurches at her.)
(Ways screams. Rashida jumps in front of him.)
Rashida (emotionally): calm down! Calm fucking down!
(Everyone looks at Ross as if he is mad. Ross storms off.)
Ways: He was gonna hit me…
Rashida: Just leave it Ways.
(Sky suddenly comes busting though the bushes. She is panting.)
Rashida: Shit. Ross, get here!
Ways: Fucking hell. You look like you have seen a ghost.
(Sky is panting heavily. She is holding Rashida’s arm tight.)
(Ross runs up to her.)
Ross: What happened? Tell us!
Rashida: Let her calm down Ross! She is shaking.
Ross: Where is Bobby?!
Sky: He’s… he’s… he’s dead…
Ross: Fuck, shit balls!
(Ross shouts at the sky.)
Sky: Rashida, we have to get out of here. There’s something here with us…
Rashida: A bear?
Sky: No damn bear! I saw something dragging Bobby’s body.
Rashida (whispered): A person…?
Sky: I think so.
Ways: Fuck this. Can we leave? Please let’s just get home. Please?
Sky: I think the others are as a good as dead. Get Dan and we will go.
Ways: I thought he went in after you?
Sky: What?! No! Christ sake.
Rashida: He’s dug his own grave. Let’s just go.
Sky: The car was somewhere, roughly, northeast. If we head in that direction… Come on, the sooner we leave the better.
(There is a sudden noise. The group sharply turns to look into the bushes.)
(Dan bursts out.)
Ross: Where the fuck have you been man?
(Dan falls to the floor. He has a gash in the side of his thigh.)
Rashida: Oh god…
Ross: Shit it!
(Ross goes over to Dan.) |

Sky: No! Move away. I took a degree to be a doctor. My older brother got his. I never, but I know enough to help.
(Ross walks of into the bushes. Rashida goes after him.)
Rashida: Ross…
(Ross is sitting on the floor crying.)
(Back at the camp.)
Ways: He seems to go off alone a lot, don’t you think?
Sky: Yeah I do. But that don’t mean anything.
Ways: Sky, what did you see? Was it a person?
(Pause.)
Sky: I think so.
Story 1
Ann is standing over to Jester again.
Ann: The urge to shoot you is growing.
Jester: Then give into that urge. The killing instinct.
Ann: No, I’m gonna take a tip out of your book and watch you suffer. Killing you would be all too easy.
Jester: Easy? Many have tried to kill me before. And you know what? Some of them are the bodies you find. I have warned you Ann.
Ann: Still making threats? I’ve got another question. Have you ever loved?
Jester (smirking): The last time I loved, you found a poor girl hanging upside down in her room, with her guts spilt out on the floor.
Ann (breathing heavily): You sick person. Don’t worry. It’s all going to end tonight.
Jester: For who Ann, for who?
Ann: You.
(Jester begins to laugh again.)
Story 2
It is late afternoon. Dan is slowly waking up.
Ways: He is awake!
(Everyone comes rushing over.)
Dan (weakly): Where am I?
Sky: With us at the camp.
(Dan’s eyes suddenly go wide and he starts screaming.)
Rashida: Calm down!
Sky: Dan, Dan its o.k. come on Dan.
(Dan finally calms down.)
Dan: I said it was gonna kill us all. We were little pigs ready to be slaughtered.
(There is a silence.)
Sky: Who said that Dan?
Dan: The Freak…
Ross: Did you tell it where the camp was? Did it follow you?!
Sky: Lay off him, Ross.
Ross: What if its here? What if it’s coming? Dan’s screaming is like a fucking beacon! We have to move.
Sky: Get him up. We go, now!
(The group begins to trap though the forest. Ross and Ways help up Dan.)
(finally they get to a point.)
Ways: Sky, I really don’t think that we can go much more tonight. We’re all tired.
Sky: No. another mile north and we stop. We could reach the car by tomorrow morning.
Ways: Listen, we just want to rest.
(Sky turns around. Everyone is looking at her.)
Sky: No. keep moving.
Ross: Who the fuck died and made you boss?
Sky: Bobby, Jason and us if we don’t move.
Dan: Please Sky. Come on.
Sky: Fine. I try to help!
Ways: We know you are.
Rashida: My feet are killing me.
Sky (muttered): That thing is going to be killing us.
(There is a silence.)
(Later)
(Rashida walks up to Dan who is slumped up against a tree.)
Rashida: You alright?
Dan: Surviving.
Rashida: Good.
Dan: I know about your affair with Bobby. I thought I would warn you. It’s a bit obvious.
(Rashida is silent. Finally she gets up and walks over to Sky.)
Rashida: Sky, Dan has a headache. Have you got anything strong for him?
Sky: Yeah, in my backpack. Drop one tablet into one of the water bottles. One will do. There strong.
Rashida: Thanks.
(Rashida goes over to Sky’s bag. She gets out 10 tablets and puts them into one of the water bottles. She then walks over to Dan and drops the bottle in front of him.)
Rashida: Here, drink this.
(Dan picks up the bottle.)
Ways (shouting): Wait!
Dan: What?
Ways: I saw you put tablets in there Rashida.
(Sky comes over.)
Sky: That’s alright. He has a headache.
Dan: No I don’t.
Sky: What?
Ways: Rashida?
(Rashida looks around. Everyone is looking at her.)
Rashida: Fuck you all!
(Rashida runs of into the forest.)
Ross: Rashida!
(The group begins to follow. They run into another clearing. Bobby is hanging on a tree. He is badly beaten and dead.)
Toby: Oh dear god…
Ross: Fuck no, no no, no, no… No!
Ways (sobbing): Why?
Sky: He’s dead. Let’s just move on.
Ross: What kind of sick mother fucker would do that?! What are we doing here? Why is this happening to us?
Sky: I don’t know. Please, let’s move on. We can be at the car by morning.
(Ways runs of to be sick. Toby follows her.)
Sky: Damn it…
(Sky sits down and begins to sob in her hands.)
Ross: Fuck this shit man.
(Suddenly there is another scream.)
(The group runs though the trees until they come to a clearing. Rashida suddenly flings herself into Ross’s arms.)
Rashida: Help me!
(Suddenly a rope around Rashida’s leg is pulled and she is pulled into the forest. Ross runs after her but is thrown back by an unseen ‘thing’. He scrambles hastily back on his hands and knees.)
Ways: What was it?! What was it?!
Ross: The fucking devil! We’re all going to die! Fucking run!!!
(The group continues to run back into the forest. Whispering can be heard around them. Ross is at the back of the line. Suddenly something jumps on him. He is holding the knife and stabs it. The thing slides back into the bushes.)
Ross: Keep going! I only scraped it. It’s going to come back.
(They continue to run until they finally stop by a clearing. They all drop from tiredness.)
(Suddenly the bushes start to rustle. Ross stands up holding the Swiss army knife. The bushes part and Jason runs tough. He is covered in blood and looking wild.)
Sky: Jason?!
Toby: I think he is hurt.
Ways: God, help him!
Ross: Wait! You’re forgetting he has been missing all-night.
Jason: Run you fools. Its hunting!
Dan: What’s hunting? What is it that we’re running from ay? Does anyone know what this thing is? It’s just someone in a fucking mask!
Jason: No. I’ve seen it move. It’s like a monster. It bit into Bobby’s face! Bobby’s dead! He’s dead! We need to go!
Ross: You’re not going anywhere.
(He points the knife at Jason.)
Sky: What are you doing?!
Ross: Where have you been?!
Jason: There’s no time! Run!
Ross: Answer me!
(Suddenly the trees part and it steps out. It is wearing a black over-coat and a blank black and white mask. It is holding a butchers knife that is dripping with blood. It slowly raises the knife and points at Ross.)
Jason: Run!
(They all run screaming. Ross, Toby and Dan follow Jason. Ways follows Sky. Toby screams for help.)
(Finally, Jason stops running and Ross, Dan and Toby catch up with him.)
Ross: Jason, what the hell was all that shit?!
Dan: Ross-
(Ross jumps at Jason grabbing him by the throat. The two fall to the floor. Dan attacks Ross and pulls him off.)
Dan: We’re all in this together. So we need to work as a team. Ross there’s no ‘I’ in team.
Ross: No but there’s an ‘e’. Every man for himself isn’t that right Jason.
Jason: We are being hunted. Now isn’t the time.
Ross: Then when is? When it kills us all?!
Jason: O.k. what the fuck do you want to know?
Ross: Where the fuck was you!
(Jason rubs his neck.)
Jason: I followed that fool Bobby into the forest. He’s dead. It killed him. It went for me but I ran. It chased me all night. I hid in a tree for the night. I heard screams so I followed them. I saw it. It was watching you all.
Dan: Who the hell is IT?!
Jason: ITS a killer.
Ross: When I looked into its eyes, I saw death… like the devil was laughing at me…
Jason: Devil maybe. It moves like it’s not human.
Toby: Christ…
Ross: It’s going to kill us… it’s hopeless.
Toby: Please just stop.
Ross: Shut up!
Dan: Shush!
Ross: Don’t tell me-
(A twig snaps. Jason points and they all hide in a ditch.)
(‘It’ walks past in the background.)
(There is a distant shout. ‘It’ goes.)
(Ross gets up.)
Ross: Fuck this shit.
Jason: You swear too much.
Ross: I’m going to find the car and we are going to leave.
Toby: What about the girls?
Ross: You think I’m staying here any longer, you stupid prick?
Toby: I’ve got more sense than you.
(Ross punches Toby. Toby gets up and runs off.)
Dan: Toby!
Ross: Leave him.
Story 1
Ann is standing over Jester.
Ann: So tell me about the mask.
Jester: It’s a symbol.
(Ann laughs.)
Ann: You think I’m scared of a mask? Really you need help, mentally.
Jester: Let me tell you a little fact of life. Since mankind could think straight, man has tried to see what’s coming next, see the future. Some think they can. Well, your face is a dead giver-way. You see, if a man is at gun point he will try to talk his way out of it. He can see the effect his words are having by the expression on the gun mans face: weather or not his words are having effect. Well, if I have a blank mask no one will know what effect there useless words are having.
Ann: Clever. So really I should un-mask you so I can see the effect my words are having right? Well I don’t need to un-mask you, Jester. No matter what: I’m going to kill you. I don’t need to see your face: I don’t know who you are, seeing your face isn’t going to help. But seeing you die is.
Jester: Oh, but there is more. In the blank mask they see what they don’t what to see.
Ann: What?
Jester: Like you look at me now. You see a mastermind. You don’t know what’s under the mask. I might be a farmer.
Ann: So what did your victims see Jester?
Jester: They saw death. They saw the Devil.
Story 2
The girls are walking though the forest.
Ways: We have to get to the car.
Sky: I know.
Ways: Because of Bobby’s stupid dare all the phones are in the car.
Sky: I know.
Ways: The compass is back at camp.
Sky: I know.
Ways: I can’t see the sun. That thing is going to come back.
Sky: I know.
Ways: It’s gonna kill us.
Sky: I know! Christ! You’re really not helping, are you? We are here, there is no changing it. So shut the hell up and let me think!
Ways: I’m trying to help, you bitch! You made us come here! It was your damn idea!
Sky: No it wasn’t! It was Danny’s! I organised it you ungrateful cow!
Ways: Oh sorry. Thanks for getting me killed!
Sky: I have been trying to help people all day and everyone has been working against me! Everyone!
Ways: That’s because it’s all you fault! |

(Suddenly there is a crack. The girls duck down into a ditch. It walks past.)
(The girls wait. Finally they get up.)
Ways: I should have stabbed it.
Sky: What?
Ways: I picked up Ross’s knife. He dropped it and I picked it up.
Sky: Well done. You better hope that we need it less than they.
(Suddenly there is another creak. The girls duck back into the ditch.)
Ways (whispered): I’m going to kill the freak…
(A figure jumps out and Ways dives out of the ditch and stabs the figure in the leg. Sky and Ways jump out of the bush. The person she stabbed is Toby.)
(Toby groans)
Ways: Oh God. I’m so sorry. Toby…
(Sky helps Toby up.)
Sky: What have you done?
Ways: I didn’t mean it. He jumped out. Why was he in the forest in the first place?
Sky: What if he dies?
Way: Fuck, please I didn’t mean it. What was he running from?
Toby: I think Ross might -
(Toby collapses.)
Ways: Oh, no, no, no…
Sky: Toby please…
(There is a silence.)
(Sky lets Toby drop.)
Sky: Ways you… (Sobbing) why is this happening?!
(She begins to scream at the sky.)
Ways (sobbing): Shhhssshhh! Please…
(Suddenly It Jumps out of the bushes. It suddenly jumps out on top of Ways and smashes her head on the ground. Ways is knocked out. The killer turns to Sky. Sky picks up the Swiss knife which had fallen on the floor. She holds it in a shaking hand. The killer tilts its head and pulls out a massive butchering knife. Sky begins crying. Next thing we see is Sky lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The killer pulls Ways into the forest.)
(Back with the boys.)
(Dan is standing by a tree. Ross is peeing.)
Dan: Jason, what do you know?
Jason: It’s fast and brutal. It knows who we are.
Dan: What do you mean?
(Ross walks over to them.)
Ross: O.k. Let’s go.
Jason: Hang on, a bit longer. I’m tired.
Ross: Wait? So that thing can get us?!
Jason: How do we know you’re not going to lead us to it?
Dan: What do you mean?
Jason: Since we have been here you keep sneaking of on your own and not returning for ages.
Ross: Now not the time.
Jason: Priceless.
Dan: No. Jason is right. Answer he’s question.
Ross: You wanna know?! You wanna fucking know? Alright then. The first night we were here, I caught that prick, Toby, having a bash. I have been… I made him…
Dan: That’s sick man.
Ross: You don’t think I know?! That bitch, Rashida, has been screwing around behind my back!
Jason: You… really?
Ross: Fucking yes! Get over it!
Dan: I can’t…
Ross: Now drop it. Can we go now?
Dan: No, wait here.
Ross: What?
Dan: Listen. I remember where… where Bobby was. I’m going to sneak back and find the compass.
Ross: We’ll all go.
Dan: No, I was an army cadet in school. I can be quiet on my own. My dad taught me how to scout. Trust me.
(Dan leaves.)
Jason: Trust…
Ross: What does that mean?
Jason: When I confronted that thing it told me that it was going to kill us all. Bobby was first. It knew our names.
Ross: And? It could have been watching us.
Jason: Not likely. You remember yesterday. When we arrived Dan wondered off and didn’t return for ages.
Ross: You think he’s-
Jason: Maybe…
Ross: Can we forget what happened with Toby?
Jason: There are bigger things to worry about.
Ross: If Dan… no, he wouldn’t…
Jason: Explain how it has known where to find us.
Ross: What if he is leading it here now?
Story 1
Ann is facing Jester again.
Ann: I thought you weren’t religious.
Jester: I thought you were an honest cop.
Ann: What?
Jester: Well, shouldn’t you have handed me over to the police? When I get put away, I’m gonna tell them all about you.
Ann: What makes you think that you are going to live though the night?
Jester: Death is my friend.
Ann: Shall we test that theory?
Jester: There was one man in particular. I tore out his wind pipe.
(Ann punches Jester again.)
Story 2
Jason and Ross are crouching behind a tree.
Ross (whispered): I aint got my knife!
Jason: What?
Ross: I don’t have it!
Jason: Just use a damn branch!
Ross: Yeah…
(Suddenly Ross turns to see “it” standing about 3 metres away looking right at him. Jason backs up. Suddenly Dan jumps out of the trees.)
Dan: Look I found it.
(Dan turns and it backs though the trees. Dan does not see it.)
Ross: You… you’re helping it?
Dan: What?
Ross: It left when you turned up.
Dan: Who left (Dan never saw the killer)
(Ross attacks Dan and hits him with the branch. He continues to beat him to death.) (Ross screams)
Ross: We killed him, you cunt! Come and get me! I’ll kill you too!
Story 1
Ann is sitting again.
Ann: I still want to know why you did it.
Jester: Go fuck.
(Ann smiles and punches Jester. Jester makes a grunting noise.)
Ann: Oh, so it hurts now. You know I just realised: maybe I want to see the pain on your face when I twist your own knife into your guts.
Jester: Maybe you would.
Ann: Playtime is over.
(Ann rips the mask off. Jester is revealed to be Jason Bie`reil.)
Ann: Your just a kid. 20, 25… ha, I was right, you’re no one are you?
(Jester/ Jason smiles)
Story 2
The scene opens with Jason looking at Ross’s back. Ross is beating the dead body of Dan.
Ross: Fucker.
Jason: Throw him down the ditch over there.
Ross: Yeah.
(Ross drags the body over to the ditch.
Jason smiles. He reaches into his own pocket and pulls out a knife. He comes up behind Ross and slits his throat.)
(Jason is sitting on a log when suddenly the killer bursts though the trees carrying Ways.)
Jason: Good. Well done.
(“It” drops Ways at Jason’s feet. Ways comes to. She gets up and cuddles Jason.)
Ways: God, it’s after me, I think it killed Sky. Help me.
(Jason strokes her hair.)
Jason: Shush its o.k. I’m going to put you out of your misery.
(Ways had been looking up at Jason smiling as he said ‘put you out of your misery’ her face drops)
Ways: Jason… what do you mean…?
Jason: Haven’t you realised yet?
(Ways tries to pull away from Jason. She does. She turns and runs into the Freak. She bounces back into Jason’s arms.)
Way: Please… please don’t kill me…
Jason: Don’t worry. I have something special planned for you…
(Jason smiles)
(We see Toby crawling down a road. A car hits him. Ann Howard steps out. She is about to call an ambulance when Toby mutters ‘Killer’.)
(The Freak is fingering a knife behind her back. It raises the knife behind Jason. Suddenly they hear a noise.)
Jason: I’ll go see. Give me your mask, knife and cloak.
(Ann enters the forest with her gun drawn. Jester/ Jason appears as he walks down a path. Ann holds a gun up to him.)
Ann: you!
Story 1
Ann is now standing above Jester.
Ann: Are you going to tell me why yet.
Jester: Fuck you.
Ann: O.k. well now to kill you. I’ve hand enough of you’re fucked up Games, Jester.
(Ann punches Jester in the face knocking the chair back. Jester pulls free of the Chair and tries to crawl away. Ann shoots him. She stands over him and kicks him. She pulls back his head and knees him in the face. Jester grabs her leg and she shoots him again. Jester is still.)
(Ann wipes her mouth and turns her back to the body. She pulls out her phone and dials a number.)
Ann: Hi it’s me. That serial killer, Jester. Long story but I tracked him and he attacked me. I shot him. I’ll need an ambulance. Thanks. I don’t know where I am. Trace my phone.
(She puts the phone away. She turns back to the body. It’s no longer there. Ann frowns. Jester comes up behind her and hits her over the head. He begins to beat her. He beats her bad. Finally he stops. Face blooded, Ann looks up to him.)
Jester: You want to know why I did it. For fun.
(Jester smile’s and leaves. The police can be heard arriving. The police enter the hut and lean over the body of Ann, she is barely alive. Jester has gone.)
(The Freak can be seen watching Jason. She has a knife in hand.)
Freak: I shall kill you. One day my friend, one day soon…
