AND NOW... OUR FEATURE PRESENTATION A LEGENDARY PRODUCTIONS FILM
IN ASSOCIATION WITH AWESOM-O PRODUCTIONS The words “SERVE AND PROTECT” come onto the screen. We zoom out revealing that the words are written on a police badge, which reads “Chicago Police Department” on the top and “To Serve and Protect” on the bottom. The figure of a police officer is shown, zooming out from a badge. The man, SHANE Murphy, is in his early thirties with a light beard, sitting down in the passenger side of a moving police car. The camera slides over revealing the driver, JACK Foley, an older, African-American man, also in a police uniform. They are talking when the radio comes on.
RADIO (Voice of Neil) We’ve got a possible code eight at Echo and Langston...an old lady called in saying her neighbors across the street are selling drugs. Requesting two units to respond.
Shane grabs the radio and answers.
SHANE This is car eighty-five fourteen, we're in that area.
JACK (laughing) I haven't seen you turn down a call my whole life...and I doubt I ever will.
Jack continues driving, and they arrive at a small, run-down house on the outskirts of town. The Sears Tower and Chicago Skyline are visible in the background.
The two cops pull into the driveway, exit the car, and walk up to the front door. Jack knocks on the door loudly with his nightstick. A few moments later, the door is opened. Inside stands a skinny man, ISSAC.
ISSAC Uh...can I help you?
JACK We were called about some possible drug activity in this house. Do you know anything about that?
ISSAC Drugs? No sir, I got no drugs here. Shit, God knows I've got better things to spend my money on.
SHANE Well would you mind if we took a look inside?
ISSAC Uh...y'all can come in, but I don't see why that's necessary.
Shane puts his arm in front of Issac and looks at him face to face.
SHANE I'll decide what's necessary here.
Shane and Jack continue into the house and to the kitchen. Issac is standing at a distance, looking at them apprehensively.
ISSAC Hey, there's no need to be going through-
SHANE What the fuck did I just tell you?
Shane continues to the living room and throws the pillows off of the couches, looking underneath them. He walks to the closet and Issac mutters something with a worried look in his eyes. We now see Jack upstairs, looking through some drawers.
SHANE (O.S.) JACK! You're going to want to see this!
Jack comes running down the stairs and to the closet. Inside the closet, there are three duffel bags filled with bricks of heroin and large wads of cash.
SHANE I'm sure you do have better things to spend your money on, like a good fucking lawyer.
Shane starts moving towards Issac, reaching into his pocket. Just as he does, Issac kicks him in the shin and bolts for the door and runs outside. Both Jack and Shane follow.
SHANE Son of a bitch!
Issac keeps running across the street and comes to the fence of another house. He tries to climb over it, but gets stuck and falls back down. Just as he gets up, Shane comes running in and tackles him to the ground, putting handcuffs on his hands as he lands.
SHANE Got ya'...little prick.
Jack arrives, panting slowly.
SHANE You're getting slow, old man.
JACK Maybe so, but not in the mind.
Shane looks at Issac and tightens up the handcuffs and Issac lets out a loud scream.
At this point we see that many neighbors have gathered in the street, all looking at the cops and Issac.
JACK Shane, calm yourself...you've had enough close calls for one year, and I can only save your ass for so long.
SHANE This prick kicked me...like a little fucking girl.
JACK How many times do I have to tell you, Shane? Look at your badge.
SHANE Oh come on, enough of this bullshit.
JACK Look at your badge, Shane.
Shane rolls his eyes and looks down at the badge on his chest.
JACK What does it say?
SHANE (sighing) "To serve and protect."
JACK And you do remember what I said about that, don't you? What I've always said?
SHANE Yeah, Jack, I remember...
Cut to a black and white FLASHBACK of Jack and Shane in a police car just as the opening scene.
JACK Nervous?
SHANE I guess.
JACK Well, at least you're honest. I remember my first day on patrol, and I was definitely nervious.
Shane laughs awkwardly and looks out the window.
JACK So...do you have a girlfriend?
Shane pauses before responding.
SHANE I guess not. You forget a birthday or two, and all of the sudden you're fucking "not boyfriend material."
Jack laughs and is interrupted by the radio calling.
RADIO Possible code eight at 12th and Washington, requesting two units respond.
Jack picks up the radio, looking at Shane.
JACK We've got this one.
Cut to (still black and white flashback): the police car pulling up to a better-looking home with several cars parked out front. The cops exit the car and walk to the front door, with Jack knocking just as before. A large man, T-MAC, walks out, smiling.
T-MAC Now what can I do for you fine officers?
JACK Hello Thomas. I can't say that it's a pleasure to see you again.
T-MAC My name ain't Thomas. And you're the one who keeps coming back. I don't know why you keep pestering an innocent civilian like myself.
JACK Well, for an innocent civilian, you sure do have a lot of people calling in about your goings-on here.
SHANE You know this guy?
Jack pauses and looks over to Shane.
JACK Yeah...I know him. We've had a few visits, two of which resulted in him being tossed in jail.
T-MAC Yes, I've been sent through the correctional system, I've done my time, Jack. And this must be your new partner? What is this, the second or third one you've gone through since he died?
SHANE Since who died? What the hell is he talking about?
JACK That's enough for now. Thomas, a concerned citizen called us saying you've been dealing drugs out of your garage. Well, it's better than the bus stops, I guess. Would you mind if we look in there for a few minutes?
T-MAC Yeah, I would mind, actually.
JACK Well, now we're just going to have to go get a warrant, aren't we? And by that time it'll all be down the toilet or at one of your dealers' houses. Unless...
Jack lightly pushes T-Mac against the wall of the porch and begins feeling up and down his body for weapons. He suddenly stops near T-Mac's ankle and pulls something out.
JACK Concealing a weapon, and aren't you on parole? We'll have to take you in and search your house later.
T-MAC You and I both know I'll be out as soon as I want, Jack. And the time I do, I'll be treated like a king in there.
JACK Well, that's a risk I'm going to have to take to keep you off the-
T-Mac suddenly sprints back into his house and shuts the door behind him, locking the two cops out.
SHANE Son of a bitch...are we going in?
JACK Yeah, we're going in. Watch your back, Shane.
Jack picks up his gun and slams it down on the doorknob, busting it off. Shane kicks the door down and the two enter the house with their guns scanning through the air. Shane walks up the stairs and Jack takes the ground floor.
Shane gets to the top of the stairs. There are two doors in front of him, right across from eachother. He walks into the door on the right with his gun pointing at it. As he opens the door, which leads to a closet, a wooden baseball bat wielded by T-Mac comes flying at his head.
Shane quickly dodges the bat, falling to the floor.
SHANE Jack! Upstairs!
Jack begins sprinting towards and up the stairs. Shane is on the ground beneath T-Mac and hits him in the stomach with his nightstick. T-Mac falls on his knees and Shane stands up. T-Mac looks into Shane's face and spits right in it.
SHANE You little piece of shit!
Shane takes a baseball swing with his nighstick, hitting T-Mac square in the face. He continues pounding on him for a few seconds before Jack gets up the stairs.
JACK Shane! Stop right now!
SHANE This piece of shit tried to kill me with a fucking baseball bat and then spat in my face!
T-Mac is on the ground holding his hand over his mouth. He coughs up blood and parts of two teeth into his hand. Jack bends down and puts handcuffs over his hands.
JACK Shane, I know this wasn't the easiest first assignment. Any training officer in his right mind wouldn't have taken this call, nobody would have their trainee's first call be Thomas. He's probably the biggest scumbag in the entire city. But no matter how much of a scumbag he is, you've got to be better than him.
SHANE I know...but I've heard a ton of other cops talking about it, they all brag about beating these guys.
JACK Shane, look at your badge. Tell me what you see, what is your job?
SHANE "To serve and protect."
JACK Yes, that's right. And that is your job. Your job is not to beat every criminal you see. Shane, we are given a responsibility as police officers. We are given power, and the moment you start abusing that power, you aren't fit to wear that badge anymore. Do you understand me?
Jack and Shane begin walking down the stairs towards the car. Jack puts T-Mac in the back seat.
SHANE Yeah, I understand. I'm sorry.
JACK It's alright. You were great, facing of with Thomas like that. You'll make a great cop one day.
Cut to (still black and white flashback): Jack and Shane walk into the police station. Jack leads T-Mac, who is handcuffed, into the large holding cell with many other criminals. Shane turns around and sees that all of the cops in the station are looking at them and applauding.
SHANE What's this all about?
JACK Well, a lot of people around here have been waiting to nab Thomas on something.
A man in a suit and tie, Police Captain REYNOLDS, walks down the stairs from his office and comes to Shane and Jack.
JACK Hello, Captain.
REYNOLDS (laughing) Jack, you son of a gun! Your first day with your trainee and you take down the biggest drug dealer in the city.
JACK Shane's the one who subdued him. He tried to kill Shane with a baseball bat.
REYNOLDS Well, this boy's got to get some kind of reward! We've been waiting to get that son of a bitch on somethng. Nobody should get away with doing what he did.
Shane looks at Reynolds confused, but Reynolds walks away before explaining.
SHANE What was that all-
Before Shane can finish the question, another cop walks up, NEIL. He speaks with a slight southern accent.
NEIL (patting Shane on the back) So this is the kid who took down T-Mac on his first day?
SHANE I guess so.
NEIL And not to mention knocked a few teeth out, too. Or at least that’s what I hear.
Shane glances worriedly at Jack. Shane sees this and reassures him.
NEIL Oh, don’t worry about me. I’m a bit pissed I wasn’t there to do it myself, though. That cop-killing piece of shit had it coming.
JACK Shane did nothing more than he needed to do to arrest Thomas. Officer Johnson, you might want to think about doing the same. I hear things too, you know.
NEIL Come on Jack, lighten up. That scumbag…he killed Vince. He killed your partner-your brother-my brother. That was two years ago, and it’s about time he paid for it.
JACK We’ve got to go file this case report, so we’ll have to catch up later. Goodbye, Officer Johnson.
NEIL See ya’, and congrats, kid!
JACK (leading Shane away) I don’t want you listening to Officer Johnson. Is that clear?
Jack and Shane arrive at a counter with a clipboard. Jack begins writing on a piece of paper as he talks to Shane.
SHANE That drug dealer…T-Mac…he killed your partner?
JACK (slowly and loudly) I said-Is that clear?
SHANE Yes, I understand.
There is a pause as Jack finishes writing, and the two walk away into an empty break room. Jack leans against the refrigerator and Shane sits down at the table, drinking a bottle of water. Jack hangs his head before beginning.
JACK My old partner, for almost ten years, was named Vince. He’d be about forty now if he hadn’t died.
Jack pauses, walks over to the table, and sits across from Shane.
JACK He put Thomas, the drug dealer otherwise known as T-Mac, in jail about six years ago. After he got out, he went after Vince. He had one of his friends hit him with a speeding car while he was walking to work. Vince wouldn’t drive if he didn’t have to, you see.
Jack pauses again and looks up at Shane, who sits with his mouth open and a look of disgust in his eyes.
JACK The car was going almost eighty miles per hour and hit him head on. He died before we reached the hospital. He died in my arms. They could never pin anything on Thomas, but the driver is still in prison. Thomas walked free, and is still free to this day.
SHANE Shit, Jack…I’m sorry-
JACK (interrupting) You might be wondering…wondering why I didn’t get revenge. Why I didn’t go out and kill Thomas, the man who I knew killed my partner, but was still allowed to walk the streets. It was because the only way I could honor Vince, my brother, was by sticking to my oath as a police officer to uphold the law. Sure, I could have gone after Thomas, and killed him. It would have made me feel better in the short term. But I knew that before long, that would come back to haunt my every dream. I know that because even the men I’ve killed in the line of duty still come back to haunt me.
Cut to (end black and white flashback):
Jack and Shane in a civilian car at night, Jack is still driving with Shane in the passanger seat.
SHANE So nobody's seen him at all since he's got out?
JACK Nope. Thomas hasn't been seen since we put him in jail...eight years ago.
SHANE (laughing) We put him in jail? I seem to remember having a baseball bat swung at my head and having to pin him down all by myself, not to mention on my first day.
Jack laughs and looks fowards at the road.
SHANE Jack...I'm worried about you.
JACK Worried? What have you got to be worried about me for?
SHANE T-Mac...he gets out of jail and doesn't show up anywhere for four months? What the fuck is he doing?
JACK I don't know, Shane. Maybe he got scared straight after you knocked his teeth out of his mouth.
SHANE Jack, I'm serious. Just watch your back, alright? God knows he's got enough thugs on the streets, let alone cops on his fuckin' payroll.
JACK If it makes you feel better, I'll watch my back, alright?
SHANE Yeah, that makes me feel a hell of a lot better.
SHANE (pointing) Take a right right here.
Jack turns the car into the parking lot of a night club. As he stops, the breaks screech, making the only sound that can be heard in the endless dark of night. The sign reads:
Paddy O'Splaines Bar/Night Club No Admittance Under Age 21
SHANE (opening door) Thanks for dropping me off.
JACK No problem. I'll see you tomorrow.
All is quiet as Shane steps out of the car. He begins walking toward the front door of the club. Right before he enters, Jack shouts out:
JACK Hey, Shane?
SHANE Yeah?
JACK Just...don't do anything I wouldn't do, okay?
SHANE (laughing) I won't, Jack.
Shane walks through the door and Jack drives away with his eyes on Shane.
Cut to: Interior of the nightclub. There is a long bar at the far end of the club of which most of the seats are filled. The rest of the club is filled with a dance floor where a D.J. plays.
Shane begins walking towards the back of the club and to the bar, pushing his way through a huge crowd on his way. As he is walking, the D.J. announces to the crowd:
D.J. Alright, alright, here we go! We've got the new sensation, the best rapper Chicago's seen in years, L.A.!
L.A. walks out from the back of the stage and comes to the microphone. Shane has stopped and watches him as if he recognized him.
L.A. Hoiw are you all feeling tonight?
The crowd lets out a loud cheer as L.A. smiles and walks back and forth.
L.A. What can I say, it's been almost two years, but L.A. is back!
Shane walks away with his eyes still on L.A. He finally gets to the edge of the crowd and makes his way to the bar. There is only one empty seat, between a large man and a black-haired woman, JESSICA. Shane sits down and orders a drink. After he has gotten it, he begins drinking and looking back at L.A.
JESSICA So, you're a cop, huh?
Shane turns to Jessica with a suprised look on his face.
SHANE How do you figure?
JESSICA I'm a psychic. I can read people's minds, you know.
Shane smiles nervously and looks to the side.
SHANE Oh...uh...that's cool.
JESSICA I'm just fucking with you. I'm sure you don't remember it, but you had to come to my house once.
Shane laughs and lets out a sigh of relief.
SHANE No, I can't say that I do remember it...what happened?
JESSICA (gesturing to L.A.) Well, you seem to remember him, so unless you've had to arrest him a dozen times, you should remember me.
Shane looks into the distance in thought.
Cut to (black and white flashback): Exterior of an apartment complex. L.A. stands at the front door, banging on it loudly.
L.A. Jessica! Get your ass out here now you slut! Don't think I didn't see with that bitch last night!
Jessica sticks her head out the window and looks down at L.A. Her window is seven stories up and she screams so he can hear her.
JESSICA What the fuck do you want?
L.A. You cheated on me, you bitch!
JESSICA Cheated on you? I hardly know you! I went to your concert once and we talked after, big fucking deal! We're not going out and we never will be, you cocky piece of shit!
L.A. Bitch, I know you didn't just talk to me like that! Soon as I get up there I'm a-
As he is speaking, we see a police car pull up to the apartment building from Jessica's point of view. Shane and Jack exit the car and walk over to L.A. Shane looks up at Jessica.
SHANE Is this the guy?
JESSICA Yeah, that's him. He's been fucking stalking me, the guy doesn't know how to take a hint!
JACK Sir, is this true? Have you been stalking this young woman?
L.A. Man, I don't gotta explain myself to you! This crazy ass white girl started getting obsessed with me, and I just come here to break up with her!
SHANE Jack, take a look at this guy for a minute. Looks familiar, right?
JACK True, he does, but I can't put a finger on it...
JESSICA (screaming down from window) He's a rapper, he goes by the name L.A., but that's only because his real name is Clarence!
Shane laughs and looks over at L.A.
SHANE That's right, L.A. is what they call you, ain't it, Clarence? But that's not the only reason I remember you. You and that dirtbag T-Mac were best buds, weren't you?
L.A. Yeah, we were tight, before he got tossed in jail 'cuz of some bullshit!
SHANE Funny, I'm the one who put him in there. And in the meantime he was looking for you to take over his empire, but you went off and signed a record deal two days after he got arrested, so everything he ever had was gone.
L.A. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, you know what I'm sayin'?
SHANE I know exactly what you're saying. And what I've got to do is put your ass right next to T-Mac in jail, and I don't think he'll be too happy about you abandoning him while he was locked up.
L.A. What? I swear, I never done anything to this crazy bitch!
JESSICA I've got a whole bunch of texts from him as proof, saying some bullshit about I belong to him.
JACK I'll be up there in a moment, ma'am, and we'll need to take you down to the station for a statement. Shane, put the cuffs on him, I'll be down in one moment.
Jack walks towards the door of the apartment. As he does, L.A. begins screaming after him.
L.A. Yeah that's right, go help the poor little white girl! You ain't nothing but an Uncle Tom!
Jack glances back at L.A. for one moment and stares into his eyes. After a moment he turns around, shakes his head, and walks into the apartment.
Cut to (end black and white flashback): Jessica and Shane back at the nightclub.
SHANE That was almost two years ago, wasn't it?
JESSICA Yeah, right around there. I guess the prick survived prison, anyway.
SHANE Well, he got lucky. He got transferred to some low security prison in the middle of the desert and apparently didn't serve the whole term.
JESSICA Well, this is the first I've seen of him since that day.
SHANE You shouldn't be here right now. Clarence over there might be a pussy, but he hangs out with some pretty dangerous guys.
JESSICA There are a lot scarier things in this world than a washed-up rap artist fresh out of jail.
Shane looks over at L.A., who is standing talking to a few people about fourty feet across the club. The two make eye contact and L.A. begins looking over at Shane and then at Jessica, and then begins walking towards them.
SHANE We've got to get out of here. Come with me.
Shane leads Jessica through the crowd towards the door in a hurry. As he does so, L.A. is still walking towards the bar. When he gets there and Shane and Jessica have disappeared, he looks around frantically. He looks at the door, which is just closing now.
We go back to Shane and Jessica outside of the club. They are walking quickly and Shane has his hand on his gun holster.
SHANE How'd you get here?
JESSICA Drove. My car's right over there.
Jessica points to a small green car to the side of the club.
SHANE Good, because I'm coming with you. Are you still in that same apartment?
JESSICA No, I'm in a nicer one about seven blocks away.
SHANE Alright, but I wouldn't doubt that he already knows where that is.
They walk over to the car. Both Shane and Jessica go to the driver's seat.
JESSICA What the hell do you think you're doing?
SHANE I'm driving.
JESSICA Like hell you are, I can take care of myself-
SHANE I don't doubt that at all. But right now we're getting chased by a lunatic who probably wants us both dead.
JESSICA Fine, you drive.
Shane gets into the driver's seat and Jessica enters the other side. Shane turns on the car and speeds out of the parking lot. As he does, L.A. and a few men behind him come through the door just as the car is halfway down the street.
L.A. That was her...with him.
L.A. pauses and looks towards the rest of his friends.
L.A. I want them both...dead if necessary.
Cut to: Shane and Jessica in the car
SHANE Alright, it's a left here, right?
JESSICA Yeah.
Shane suddenly slams on the breaks in the middle of the turn. Jessica flies foward and falls back into her seat.
JESSICA What the hell was that?
SHANE Do you see that fucking car in front of your building?
Jessica stretches her neck to look. She sees the car and nods.
SHANE Well, as soon as we turn onto that street, they're either going to unload a few clips into your nice little car or try to knock us out.
JESSICA What the hell are we going to do?
Shane suddenly swings the wheel around and slams on the gas.
SHANE We're going to my place.
Cut to: Shane and Jessica walking into Shane's house. Jessica looks around curiously as Shane throws his coat on a couch, turns on the T.V., and sits down.
JESSICA So, what am I going to do, sit here and wait for you to get off your lazy ass and arrest him?
SHANE There's not much we can do now. Just wait here until tomorrow. You can sleep here on the couch-
Jessica gives Shane a dirty look and rolls her eyes.
JESSICA What a gentleman...
SHANE Alright, fine, take my fucking bed. I'll sleep on the couch. Happy?
JESSICA Yeah, pretty happy.
Jessica walks off to Shane's room and Shane follows.
SHANE Alright, just don't touch anything...the bathroom's right down the hall, and there's some food in the fridge if you get hungry...
Shane leaves the room, goes back to the couch, and turns on Sportscenter.
SHANE (sighing) Fucking Grossman.
Shane turns off the television in the middle of the highlight and walks over to the fridge. He pulls out a piece of cake and turns around. As he does, Jessica is standing right in front of him.
JESSICA I was wondering how long it would take you to quit being such a pussy and come in there already, but I guess I'll have to do this myself.
SHANE Sorry, Jack always tells me to be a gentleman...
Jessica puts her hand over Shane's mouth.
JESSICA No more talk about Jack...
Jessica grabs Shane and the two begin making out. They continue while walking toward the bedroom and begin taking off their clothes. Jessica lays down on the bed under the blankets and Shane follows, smiling.
Cut to: The next morning, Shane and Jessica are still laying in bed. An alarm clock beeps loudly and Shane begins to move about in bed. He lifts his head up sluggishly and looks at the clock, which reads 8:52. After seeing this, he suddenly and frantically gets up and starts running around the room, changing and putting on his shoes.
SHANE Shit...gonna be late again...
Jessica begins to stir in bed at all of the noise.
JESSICA (yawning) Shane? What's going on?
SHANE I've got to go to work...I've got a break at a quarter to three, so I'll be back then and I'll bring Jack. But we'll make sure to find this L.A. prick before doing anything else, okay?
JESSICA Okay...
Jessica puts her head back down and falls back asleep as Shane walks out of the room and exits the house. He gets in the car and pulls away.
Cut to: Interior police station. Captain Reynold's office is above the rest of the station with a flight of stairs leading to it. Shane hurries up the stairs and sees Reynolds.
SHANE Hey, Captain? Have you seen Jack at all today?
REYNOLDS Actually, if you can believe it, I haven't. Probably the first time in the four or so years I've been here, but he's not here yet.
SHANE That's not like Jack...not at all.
REYNOLDS No, it sure as hell isn't, Shane.
Shane walks back down the stairs.
Cut to: Shane pulling up into Jack's driveway. He walks up to the door and begins knocking and shouting Jack's name.
SHANE (banging on door) Jack? Jack? Jack! Jack, this isn't funny, get the hell out here!
Nobody answers and Shane walks around to the side of the house, looking at the windows. There is one window that is completely shattered and Shane walks up to it.
SHANE (nervously) Oh shit...god no, Jack...
Cut to: Later that day, the police have roped off Jack's house. Captain Reynolds and Neil are both present among the force.
NEIL (to Reynolds) What the fuck is going on here?
REYNOLDS Jack's house was apparently broken into and there is no sign of him anywhere.
Somebody calls Reynolds over and he walks away from Neil and Shane.
NEIL (to Shane) Son of a bitch...who the fuck would do that?
SHANE I'll give you two fucking guesses who. T-Mac, that's who. He gets out of jail, lays low as fucking possible, and then one day Jack just disappears-Coincidence? I don't fucking think so.
NEIL Jesus...we've got to find that prick, but I don't think that's gonna be so easy if he just kidnapped a cop.
SHANE I think I know where to start.
Cut to (black and white flashback): A man, Lionel, sits on a beach chair in the middle of a flea market. The market contains various people selling old junk in the background with customers browsing around. Surrounding Lionel are various photographs, paintings, and other works of art. Lionel has only one leg and crutches lean against either side of his chair. He wears dark sunglasses.
Jack and Shane walk up to Lionel, and Lionel immediately starts to get up. As he does, Jack puts his hand out, laughing.
JACK Don't get up, Lionel. I don't want an old man like you hurting yourself.
LIONEL (laughing) So I guess you do have a sense of humor after all.
JACK I suppose so. It just doesn't come out often.
Lionel looks over confused at Shane. Realizing this, Jack begins to introduce them.
JACK Sorry about that. Lionel, this is Shane. He's my new partner. Shane, this is Lionel. Not a thing goes on in this neighborhood that Lionel doesn't see, and we've been friends for a long time.
Shane bends over and shakes Lionel's hand.
SHANE Nice to meet you.
LIONEL You too, you too. I can't say enough how sorry I am about Vince, Jack. That ain't right, you know, T-Mac gettin' off and all. I heard you caught him on something else, that true?
JACK Yes, Lionel, we arrested Thomas a month ago on drug possession with intent to distribute, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and a few other charges.
LIONEL Well hot damn, he was always one to put up a fight. So, you boys need something or are you just gonna stand there with your hands in your pockets?
JACK Yes, we need something. There's been a ring of robberies for the past three or four weeks, all done pretty professionally. Have you heard anything about that?
LIONEL Well shit, I was wondering when you'd come about that. It's those fucking Russians.
SHANE (suprised) Russians?
LIONEL Yeah boy, you deaf or something? I said the Russians, the Russian mob. Big guy named Tretiak is their boss...they've got about fourty soldiers on the street these days.
JACK I'll look into it. Thank you, Lionel.
Jack walks up to Lionel and puts a large amount of money in his hand, then Jack and Shane walk away. As they are walking away, Lionel shouts out:
LIONEL Hey, you forgot to pick a painting!
Cut to (end black and white flashback): Lionel sits in the same chair in the same spot of the flea market. Shane and Neil approach.
SHANE Lionel, I need some information.
LIONEL Not without buyin' a painting. Where's Jack?
SHANE Jack isn't here right now, I'll explain in a minute...Neil, got any preferences?
Neil shrugs and Shane grabs a painting at random.
SHANE How much?
LIONEL Why you lucky son of a bitch, you picked out my best paiting. That'll be two hundred.
SHANE Two hundred bucks...you're a real piece of shit, you know that? Plus I don't seem to remember you making Jack pay until after you told him what he wanted.
LIONEL Yeah, well I could trust Jack now, couldn't I?
Lionel grins at Shane and sticks out his hand. Shane reluctantly puts four fifty-dollar bills in his hand.
LIONEL Now officers, what can I do ya' for?
SHANE You hear anything about a cop disappearing?
LIONEL Wait a second...you ain't talking about Jack, are you?
SHANE Yeah, Lionel. Jack's missing. Somebody broke into his house.
LIONEL Shoot...I dunno who in their right mind would want to do that to a guy like Jack.
SHANE Yeah, well judging from this, I'm going to guess you have no clue about who did this.
LIONEL No sir. This is the first I've heard about it.
SHANE Well, we've got our own theories on the who. You're going to help us on the where.
LIONEL Well, who might the "who" be?
SHANE T-Mac.
LIONEL Ah Shane, that boy disappeared ever since he came out of the joint. Nobody's heard from him in the last few weeks.
NEIL Alright, if you don't know where he is, maybe you can tell us where that piece of shit excuse rapper he hangs out with is.
LIONEL You mean Clarence?
SHANE Yeah, they call him L.A.
LIONEL Well, I still call him Clarence. He was such a nice boy, lived right down the block from me for about ten years. That was before he met Thomas, though.
NEIL Just tell us where he fuckin' lives, grandpa.
SHANE (to Neil) Chill out, man. Lionel's alright.
LIONEL Clarence...yeah, he's living only a few blocks away from here, down on Kennedy. Funny, he just got out of jail, too. From what I hear, I don't think he and Thomas aren't exactly friends these days, so I don't think he'll be able to help you there.
SHANE It's a start.
Cut to: The exterior of a run-down, boarded up house. Shane and Neil walk up to the door and knock. After nobody answers, Neil kicks down the door and the two enter. As Shane enters, he looks at his watch. It is 2:49.
SHANE Fuck...Jessica's going to wonder where I am.
NEIL Who's that, got some new pussy?
SHANE Long story. Let's find this guy and get out of here.
NEIL Alright, just keep your fuckin' gun up, okay? You know how these people live.
Shane glances over at Neil and walks away.
Shane and Neil walk through the empty house and up some stairs. They reach the top, enter a room, and see a man laying in a bed, asleep.
Neil walks up to the bed and starts shaking it rapidly.
NEIL Rise and shine, you piece of shit!
Just as L.A. starts to get up from the bed, Shane punches him in the face. L.A. grunts and puts his hands to his face, wiping blood from his mouth.
L.A. Man what the fuck was that all about?
SHANE Where is he?
L.A. What? Where's who?
SHANE You know who I'm talking about! Your little friend T-Mac went after a cop last night, and I'm guessing you had something to do with it.
L.A. look at Shane in silence for a few seconds.
NEIL Answer the fucking question or I'll knock a few teeth out of your mouth. Are we clear?
L.A. I don't know nothin' about any cop getting attacked. Me and T-Mac, we aren't friends anymore, man! I haven't talked to him or even seen him since he got out of jail, he's like a fucking ghost!
NEIL You're lying, and now you're making me do what I promise I'd do. And I'm not one to break promises.
Neil drags L.A. out of his bed and throws him into a wall. He then takes him by the arm and twists it violently.
NEIL Are you going to tell us what you did to him or do I need to chop your cock off?
L.A. (coughing on the floor) I swear...I got nothing...nothing to do with it.
SHANE Neil, hold on. I think that as big of a piece of shit he is, he doesn't know anything.
NEIL Well hell, of course he doesn't. If he did he would have told me already to save his own ass like the pussy he is. I just thought he deserved a swift kick in the ass.
As L.A. lays on the floor, Neil reaches down and starts going through his pockets.
SHANE What are you doing?
NEIL Ten bucks says he's got a gun, some drugs, and a shitload of cash on him. We wouldn't be doing our jobs if we let him keep all of those illegal items, would be?
SHANE I guess not.
Neil continues searching and pulls out one 9mm pistol, a large piece of cardboardr with the design of a yellow and red spiral on it, and a large roll of cash. Shane picks up the piece of paper and holds it up.
SHANE LSD, isn't it?
NEIL Yeah. That's what they're like...ain't good for nothing besides stealing, running, and shooting.
Shane glances over at Neil from the corner of his eye. He looks as if he is going to say something about the comment but closes his mouth. Shane and Neil begin to walk out of the room, and as Shane exits, he kicks L.A. in the side of his ribs. He then bends down, grabs L.A.'s chin roughly, and looks into his eyes.
SHANE If I see you around Jessica again, I'm going to personally put a bullet in your head. Got that?
L.A. doesn't answer, but looks down at the ground. Shane picks his head up again roughly.
SHANE I said, do you fucking understand that?
L.A. nods slightly and Shane lets him go, stands up, and continues towards the door. As he is just exiting the room with Neil, L.A. calls out:
L.A. (coughing) It'll come around...it'll come around...
Shane stops and looks back at L.A. after this. Neil continues walking and pulls Shane out of the room with him.
NEIL Don't listen to scumbags like him.
SHANE Well, if he doesn't know anything, what the hell are we gonna do now?
As Shane and Neil are stepping into their car, the D.J. from the nightclub walks up to L.A.'s door, which was left open.
NEIL Who the fuck was that?
SHANE He's the D.J. at some club where L.A. hangs out...I'm gonna go see what's going on. Get out of sight for now and wait for me.
Shane throws the bag with the drugs, money, and the gun he took from L.A. in the back seat. He then walks quickly up the steps to the house. He stops next to the stairs, right underneath the room L.A. was in. He pushes his ear up to the vent and listens.
D.J. (O.S.) I don't know why, he personally came over and said if you don't meet him there, he'll kill both of us!
L.A. (O.S.) T-Mac came to the club? Nobody's seen him since he got out.
D.J. (O.S.) Well, that's why I was thinkin', ya' know, this must be some serious shit if he comes in the middle of the day to see somebody like me about you. He means business, ya' know, and from what I've heard, he wasn't too happy about your new career when he got locked up.
L.A. (O.S.) No...he probably would have had some guys come after me while I was in there, but I got transferred-
D.J. (O.S.) Well, ain't that lucky?
L.A. (O.S.) I wouldn't call it luck. The police captain is one soft son of a bitch.
D.J. (O.S.) Well, that won't be enough to stop T-Mac from killing you know. Please sir, just go over there. I got a wife and a kid coming, Mr. L.A.
L.A. (O.S.) Oh, I'm going. If he wants to kill me, he'll kill me either way.
D.J. Thank you, thank you very much, Mr. L.A. He wants you to meet him there at 11 tomorrow night.
There are loud thuds of footsteps above as the D.J. walks down the stairs. Shane waits for him to exit and then walks out the front door. As he walks out of the house, Neil pulls up with the car, and Shane gets in.
NEIL So, what happened in there?
SHANE L.A. is meeting T-Mac tomorrow night.
NEIL Where at?
SHANE I don't know, he must have mentioned it before I got in.
NEIL Well what are we going to do?
SHANE Wait down the street tomorrow night for L.A. to leave. From there, we'll follow him. I'll drop you off for now and pick you up around 9 tomrrow night.
Cut to: Shane walks through the front door to his home, still carrying the bag of money, drugs, and the gun he took from L.A. Outside, it is pitch black. Jessica sits on the couch watching T.V.
JESSICA What the hell happened to coming back at 3?
SHANE I'm sorry, I got caught up with something-
JESSICA Something that took you five hours?
SHANE (walking over to her) Yes. Glad to know you can fucking count, Jessica.
Jessica looks at Shane and gets up from the couch.
JESSICA So much for Jack teaching you to be a gentleman-
Shane interrupts by smacking Jessica across the face, and she falls to the floor.
SHANE (screaming) Don't you ever mention Jack! You didn't-you don't even fucking know him!
Jessica gets up and looks Shane in the face.
SHANE (beginning to cry) Jessica, I'm sorry...Jack's missing, I-
Jessica slaps Shane in the face and walks off to his bedroom, locking the door behind her.
Shane is crying a little bit and walks over to the fireplace. A photo of him and Jack sits on it. He picks up the photo and stares at it for a moment. He then violently tosses it across the room at the door to his bedroom where Jessica is sleeping.
Shane sits on the couch right next to the bag he was carrying. He glances as it and looks away, but double takes and looks back. He then reaches into the bag and pulls out the large piece of cardboard in the design of a spiral. The cardboard is divided up into little squares which are coated with LSD.
Shane stares at the cardboard for a few moments before suddenly ripping off four of the pieces of paper. He stops for a moment with them in his hand in a moment of hesitation. After looking around for a second, Shane slips the squares of LSD into his mouth, swallowing hard. He then lays down and we fade out into a blurry dream sequence of Shane's:
(Dream) Shane is driving his own car, speeding along a busy street. He swerves in and out of cars and sees Jack driving a police car some distance ahead. He pushes harder on the gas and squeezes in between two cars which block his way to Jack. As Shane glances over, he sees the drivers of the two cars: two faceless men. As Shane squeezes between them, the two faceless drivers lose control and fly off the road, crashing into the boundary to the other side of the rode and exploding behind Shane.
Shane (in his own car) now has a clean path to Jack, who drives in the police car he was seen driving earlier in the film. Shane speeds up and finally pulls up next to Jack. As he does, he screams over out of the window to Jack:
SHANE Jack! Jack, I'm coming!
JACK No, Shane. You're too late! Stop the car!
SHANE What? No, Jack, just hang tight, I'm coming!
JACK This isn't the way, Shane-
As Jack says this, another car, traveling the wrong way directly at Jack, slams into him head on at full speed. The two cars collide and Jack's car flies off of the road into a ditch violently.
The other car stops in the middle of the street, not extremely damaged. Shane suddenly finds himself driving straight at the car as a man climbs out of it. It is a large man, and just as he steps out of the car, Shane's car runs into him at full speed, sending him flying into a ditch.
Shane looks back over his shoulder at the man and Jack's police car in the ditch and is suddenly crying. He looks towards the ditch and his car begins drifting closer and closer towards it. He then jerks the steering wheel to the side, sending him and his car directly into the ditch and into a cement wall.
Cut to (end dream sequence): the aroused eye of Shane opening and looking around. Shane breathes heavily and springs up out of the couch. He looks around, back in the empty living room with the LSD-covered piece of cardboard next to him.
Shane then walks over to the door of his room, where Jessica was sleeping. He bangs on the door, but no answer comes.
SHANE (banging on door) Jessica! Open the door!
The door flies open and Jessica stands in the doorway silently.
SHANE I'm going somewhere...to take care of something. After I do this, everything will be better...
Jessica doesn't respond after a few seconds.
SHANE Jessica, listen...I'm sorry about last night. Jack...he's gone right now. I have no fucking clue where he is. I'm sorry for what I did to you.
JESSICA If you ever do that again, I'm gonna rip your balls off.
SHANE Apology accepted?
JESSICA Partially.
SHANE Good enough. I'll see you later.
JESSICA See ya. Good luck, Shane.
As Shane walks out, he kisses Jessica on the lips and continues out the door.
Cut to: The sky is darkening as Shane's car pulls up to an apartment complex. Neil comes running down a flight of stairs and gets into the car. Shane pulls out into the street and begins driving towards L.A.'s house.
NEIL So what are we going to do?
SHANE Wait for L.A. to come out, then follow him as best we can to T-Mac.
NEIL Sounds like a plan.
Cut to: Interior of Shane's car pulling up to the street L.A. lives on. He parks the car on the curb halfway down the street, turns off the car, and leans back.
NEIL Well, seems like we've got a bit of time to pass.
SHANE Can't be sure. They're meeting at 11, so he's definitely leaving sometime before 10:30.
We see that the clock reads 9:55 pm.
NEIL Yeah, well I'm gonna lay down for a bit. Wake me up when the scumbag comes out of-
Neil is interrupted by Shane gently smacking him in the chest. He looks over and sees L.A. exit the house. L.A. gets in his car and drives in the opposite direction. Shane quickly turns on the car and begins to follow L.A., keeping some distance in between them..
NEIL Shane, just what in the hell are you gonna do when he gets wherever he's going? T-Mac will be happy that two cops fell into his lap.
SHANE (quietly) We're doing this for Jack.
NEIL Shane, I don't think Jack would have wanted you to end up dead like him-
Neil is interrupted as Shane reaches across the car and punches Neil in the gut.
NEIL (gasping) What the fuck was that for?
SHANE Say something else like that about Jack and you'll be laying on the curb. Got that?
NEIL Christ, Shane. You don't know what you're getting yourself into here. Jack is dead, Shane, and we will be too if we don't stop.
Shane quickly slams on the breaks and points his gun at Neil's head.
SHANE Get out of my car.
NEIL Shane, come on, let me-
SHANE I said get out of this fucking car or I'll kill you right here.
NEIL Shane-
Shane cocks his pistol and points it back at Neil's skull.
SHANE Get out of the car, Neil.
Neil looks into Shane's eyes, slowly opens the door, and backs out of the car.
NEIL Just remember kid, I warned ya'!
Shane immediately speeds off, leaving Neil standing in the middle of the street. Shane turns a corner and barely sees L.A.'s car turning onto the expressway. Shane quickly speeds up and follows L.A.
Cut to: Exterior view of Shane and L.A.'s cars, among others, on the expressway. The sky is completely dark now, without a cloud in the sky. L.A.'s car changes lanes quickly and takes an exit. Shane slows down and takes the same exit, keeping a safe distance behind L.A.
We then see L.A.'s car turning into a parking lot. The parking lot has just one other car in it, and is filled with junk. It is immediately in front of a large, abandoned warehouse. L.A. walks to the door of the warehouse, looks around nerviously, and enters.
Shane's car now pulls into the parking lot slowly, just as L.A. closes the door, and with his headlights turned off. He quickly parks in an open spot near L.A.'s car and exits the vehicle.
As Shane is walking to the same door L.A. entered through, his phone rings. He quicly whips it out of his pocket and answers.
SHANE Hello?
REYNOLDS (O.S.) Shane, where are you?
SHANE Captain?
REYNOLDS (O.S.) Yeah. I've been trying to reach you all day. Where the hell are you? Neil said something about you being crazy and going after T-Mac.
SHANE I'm fine. I'll be back at work tomorrow.
REYNOLDS (O.S.) Shane, where are you now?
SHANE (after a pause) I'm at home. Listen, Captain, I'll call you back in a little while, okay?
REYNOLDS (O.S.) Shane, hold on a second-
Shane closes the phone before Reynolds can finish. He then continues to the warehouse and over to a small window on the side of it. He peers through the window and we see the figures of L.A. and T-Mac walking towards each other. They stop, facing each other about 10 feet apart. The warehouse is dark and only the figures of them can be seen.
T-MAC I'm suprised you showed up.
L.A. What do you want?
T-MAC I wanted to talk to you.
L.A. looks at T-Mac suspiciously but does not respond.
T-MAC You abandoned me, Clarence. The only thing you had to do was not fuck things up, and we'd be on top of the world right now. But that was too hard for you, wasn't it?
L.A. You know damn well my dream was always to get a record deal. It's a hell of a better dream than being a big-time drug dealer-
T-Mac quickly runs at L.A. and tackles him to the ground. As this happens, we see Shane run up to a flight of stairs attatched to the outside wall of the warehouse. There is a doorway at the top that leads into it. He gets to the top, walks along the balcony unnoticed, and watches the fight.
T-Mac begins beating L.A., who is staggering around, barely able to walk. T-Mac beats him in the face and in the ribs before throwing him down to the ground. As L.A. hits the ground, T-Mac pulls out a knife, drawing it closer and closer to his neck.
L.A. T-Mac, man, think about this-
L.A. is silenced by a blow to the nose from T-Mac. He continues to bring the knife closer to L.A.'s neck, facing resistance from L.A.'s arm.
As the knife gets closer and closer, L.A. suddenly kicks out T-Mac's legs from underneath him, sending T-Mac flying on his chest to the ground. L.A. grabs his knife and gets on top of T-Mac, pinning him to the ground. He then puts the knife against T-Mac's throat, pushing down on it harder and harder every moment.
L.A. I'm sorry, T-Mac. This didn't have to happen. You did this.
L.A. raises the knife high up in the air, ready to bring it down in one swoop at T-Mac's neck. As it reaches the top and L.A. begins to thrust down, a gunshot is suddenly heard. L.A. and T-Mac look around, and Shane sits upon the balcony with hs gun pointed at the two.
L.A. begins pouring blood from the chest, where he has been hit with the bullet. He puts his hands to his chest and slowly looks over at Shane and T-Mac before collapsing on the ground, dead.
T-Mac stares in awe at Shane, who still has his gun pointed in the same spot as it had been, with a shocked look on his face. T-Mac, gasping for air on the ground, begins to crawl at L.A.'s body for the knife that is under him. He tries to lift the body to get the knife, but cannot.
Shane begins calmly walking down the stairs to T-Mac, who begins frantically trying to get the knife. Just as he gets a hand around it, Shane reaches him and pistol whips him in the head. T-Mac falls back to the floor, gasping and coughing excessively.
SHANE Get up, you prick.
T-Mac remains on the ground, holding his mouth, which is extremely bloody and one tooth has been knocked out to the floor.
SHANE I said get the fuck up!
T-Mac slowly rises to his knees and looks at Shane.
SHANE (slowly( Now, listen to me carefully. I'm only going to say this once. Where is Jack?
T-Mac, with blood dripping all down his face and shirt, glances out of the corner of his eye to the far wall of the warehouse, which is clouded in darkness. Shane quickly runs over to the wall. When he gets there he sees a man, tattered and beaten, tied to a chair. He approaches closer and sees that it is indeed Jack in his uniform. He reaches in and feels Jack's neck for a pulse, but it is evident from his white skin that he is dead.
SHANE No...no....not Jack...not Jack...
Shane breaks down in front of Jack's body and cries with his face on the ground. T-Mac can be seen looking over at him from across the room. Shane suddenly rises and walks over to T-Mac., who is on his knees. Shane bends down so that his face is level to T-Mac's face.
SHANE You're gonna pay for this, you know that?
T-Mac responds by spitting directly in Shane's face in defiance. Shane slowly wipes the spit of his face and looks at T-Mac.
SHANE Bad choice, buddy.
Shane suddenly flies at T-Mac, bringing him to the ground. He begins wailing on him with his pistol and fists in the face. He then brings T-Mac back up to his knees and walks back about fifteen feet. He then gets a running start and uppercuts T-Mac in the jaw, sending him flying backwards and to the ground.
As Shane paces around after sending T-Mac to the floor, his phone rings. After a few rings and looking at the phone, Shane whips it at the wall as far and hard as he can through. Upon impact the phone stops ringing.
T-Mac still lays coughing and weezing on the ground. Shane walks over to him, half-crying, and kicks him in the ribs.
SHANE What'd you do it for, huh? Bored? Like to kill cops, huh? Well let me tell you something about cop killers. By the time I'm through with them, they pray that I'll kill them so they don't have to endure the pain.
T-MAC (muttering) Fuck you...
Shane looks at T-Mac a moment before suddenly reaching down into his own pants. He walks over to T-Mac and stands directly over him before un-zippering his pants. He then begins to urinate directly on T-Mac, who rolls on the ground to try to get away from it.
SHANE How you like it now, bitch? Huh?
Shane ends this by zipping up his pants and delivering a quick kick to the face of T-Mac. He then leaves T-Mac on the ground and walks back over to Jack's body, still sitting bound to the chair near the wall. He nears the body and looks at his chest, where his badge should be. However, it is not there. Shane feels his own badge and puts it back in his pocket.
SHANE Where the hell is his badge?
Shane gets no answer other than heavy breathing and moaning from T-Mac. He then decides to walk over to him and search him himself. He pulls out a wallet, some money, and finally, a police badge-Jack's police badge.
Shane walks over with the badge and clips it onto Jack's uniform where it belongs. He then walks over to T-Mac, grabs him by the hair, and brings him up to his knees. He turns his own back on Jack's body, facing the opposite direction at T-Mac. Shane then pulls out his gun and points it directly at T-Mac's forehead. He shakes and trembles for a moment, wiping the sweat off of his forehead. After a few moments of hesitation, he quickly closes his eyes and pulls the trigger. A large amount of blood flies quickly from the back of T-Mac's head as his body goes limp and slumps to the ground.
Shane then walks slowly over to Jack's body in the chair. He pulls out his own badge and looks at it, seeing the words "Serve and Protect" clearly on the badge. He then looks back up at Jack's body, begins crying, and slumps to his knees in front of the chair.
SHANE I'm sorry Jack...I failed you.
He begins crying and pulls out his gun again.
SHANE I don't deserve this!
He takes out his badge and tosses it onto Jack's lap. As he does this, police sirens can be heard in the background. Shane takes notice to these for no more than a second before looking back at Jack.
The sirens become much louder and we begin to see the blue and red flashing police lights penetrating the building. SHane looks back worriedly before cocking his pistol once more. He slowly raises the gun as the sirens become increasingly louder and the lights increasingly brighter.
A single, loud gunshot is heard, as we now see Shane with his pistol pointed in his own mouth. Blood splatters out of his head all over the ground as the warehouse door bursts open and officers rush madly at Shane. He takes one final look at Jack's body before falling to the ground at Jack's feet, who is still tied to the chair.
