Let’s stick to the plan today, eh Hal?
HAL
(grinning)
Come on, Tom, you know me.
Hal flicks a few lit-up switches before looking curiously towards the ground not too far below, where a large green light emits from a large, deserted park. He then flicks a switch and steers the plane towards the ground.
TOM (O.S.)
Hal, what the hell are you doing?
HAL
Do you see that?
TOM (O.S.)
See what?
HAL
That green light!
Shot of Tom in his cockpit looking at the same park-there is nothing out of the ordinary. He looks suspiciously over at Hal’s jet below him.
TOM
What the hell are you talking about? I don’t see anything.
HAL
I’m gonna go check this out, you go on without me-
TOM (O.S.)
Landing in the middle of a park, are you kidding me? Stone will have your ass for this, Hal, after what happened yesterday-
HAL
Just keep flying, Tom.
Hal’s jet slowly descends and lands in a clearing in the park not far from the light, barely fitting between to large trees. He exits and looks around. The green light is glowing and transparent and is now in the cover of trees. Hal follows it, but as he walks, he doesn’t seem to get any closer as the trees get thicker and thicker, leading into a small forest.
The green light continues to lead Hal until he comes upon a small, sleek, silver hunk of destroyed metal which appears to be a spaceship on the ground in ruins. Hal’s mouths open as he walks over to the ship, noticing a large hole ripped in one of its walls. Sparks fly as small fires consume the ship. Hal slowly enters and sees what looks like a man inside, lying on the floor, only with a slight red tint to his skin. He lies holding his chest and gasping for air.
ALIEN
Ah…you came.
HAL
Wha-Who are you?
ALIEN
I am Abin Sur…you are Jordan, correct?
HAL
How the hell do you know my name?
ABIN SUR
Not all in this universe have such limited natural abilities as you humans. I am just one of thousands of organisms who are apart of the Green Lantern Corps.
HAL
And that is-
ABIN SUR
An intergalactic police that protects even earth, whether you know it or not…whoever wears the power ring will become a Green Lantern.
Hal looks at the alien’s hand, which bears a strange-looking green ring.
ABIN SUR
Hal Jordan, I called you here because I am dying, because you are capable of overcoming great fear. You must take my ring…you must take my place as the Green Lantern of Earth.
Hal pauses for almost ten seconds before answering.
HAL
Show me.
ABIN SUR
What?
HAL
Show me how that thing works…that ring.
In the blink of an eye, the same green light comes from the ring, creating a small, green rock which flies through the air, hitting Hal square in the forehead. He holds his head in pain, looking at the alien, part in annoyance, part in awe.
ABIN SUR
This ring holds the power to create anything you could ever dream of. With enough willpower, this is the greatest weapon in all of the universe.
He begins to wheeze louder, clutching his chest, and Hal walks closer to him.
HAL
I’ll accept it…the ring, I’ll take it!
Abin Sur smiles as the ring flies from his finger onto Hal’s. Suddenly, a green and black costume covers his entire body, the Green Lantern symbol on his chest.
ABIN SUR
Never, in all my life, would I have expected to see a human accept the ring.
Hal looks down at Abin Sur, who begins to close his eyes.
ABIN SUR
Jordan…you must go to Oa. There you will learn…there you will become a Green Lantern.
FADE TO BLACK
