CLOSE on a computer’s digital clock. It reads 11:54 PM.
INT. DORM ROOM – 1999 - NIGHT
PAN out to reveal the rest of the bright screen. It appears to be homework of some kind.
In front of the monitor sits Charles Abaddon, obviously in his early twenties. He furiously types away at the report.
Behind him is a small television set, muted, that is reporting on the ball being dropped for New Years. Suddenly the door opens and Mark Kline enters, staggering drunkenly.
MARK
What the hell are you doin’ man, it’s freakin’ New Years!
What the hell are you doin’ man, it’s freakin’ New Years!
Charles barely even acknowledges he is there.
CHARLES
New Years or not, I still gotta’ get this done by Monday.
MARK
Pssht...you gotta’ live a little man.
(looking at the clock)
Shoot, might only have 5 more minutes anyway.

Charles raises his eyes suspiciously.
CHARLES
Tell me you’re not buying into this Y2K crap.
MARK
(appalled)
Crap? I think there is like a million people who would disagree with you Charlie. News says this could be the end of the freaking world!

Charles laughs softly. The computer clock now reads 11:58.
CHARLES
Well I guess we’ll see in two more minutes.
Well I guess we’ll see in two more minutes.
BEAT.
CHARLES (cont.)
It’s not going to happen. I promise you the end of human civilization isn’t going to come because of a computer glitch. You can take that to the bank.
MARK
If they still exist after tonight, I just might. Besides, how can you be so sure?

MARK
If they still exist after tonight, I just might. Besides, how can you be so sure?
Charles smiles and leans back in his chair, crossing his hands behind his head.
The clock turns to midnight. On the television the ball drops and the crowd goes wild.
CHARLES
I told ya’.
I told ya’.
Charles grins deviously in Mark’s direction.
CUT TO:
INT. SMALL GYMNASIUM – 1 DAY AFTER IMPACT - EVENING
Charles stands on a small make-shift stage in the center of the run down gym. Many reporters and security officers surround the stage.
MALE REPORTER
Mr. Abaddon, what would YOU do if you were in this situation? If you were leading this country?
Mr. Abaddon, what would YOU do if you were in this situation? If you were leading this country?
Charles takes a brief moment to think about the question.
CHARLES
First and foremost we must take the appropriate steps to rebuild our country.
MALE REPORTER
Could you clarify what steps you would take, Sir?
CHARLES
Of course. Please, forgive me but I am going to be completely frank with all of you. I think our people deserve that much in a time like this. Some may think I’m crazy, but now is the time for extremes.

BEAT. The crowd watches him, unsure of what he getting at exactly.
CHARLES
We’ve been attacked. The pillars of our nation have been destroyed. Manhattan, Denver, Los Angeles, among others. They aren’t just our homes. They represent our liberties...our freedom.

A woman reporter begins to ask another question but is cut off by Abaddon.
CHARLES (cont.)
I’m sorry ma’am, but I must finish. We must hunt down those responsible for the despicable acts and bring them to justice. Justice for everyone who has lost a loved one in this time of tragedy. But before we do that, we must first worry about our home. We are in desperate need of change in our OWN country.

But before we do that, we must first worry about our home. We are in desperate need of change in our OWN country.
Now many onlookers from near the stands cheer loudly, clapping and whistling.
CHARLES (cont.)
We must reunite America. So back to the question at hand. What would I do? I would eliminate statehood in America. Ask yourself “are we fifty separate countries or are we one united America?” We need to bring things back to the home. Watch out for each other, help our neighbors.

He’s not stopping now as the crowd eats up every word.
CHARLES (cont.)
We need to secure all international borders. East, west, north and south. All pose potential threats to our safety. So when you ask me what I would do if I was the leader of this great nation of ours?

The crowd has fallen strangely silent, hanging on every word.
CHARLES (cont.)
I would lead us into a new world. A better world.
I would lead us into a new world. A better world.
Again the crowd erupts and even the police can be seen clapping and cheering. Charles smiles at them proudly.

INT. SMALL BAR – 2 DAYS AFTER IMPACT - DAY
CLOSE on a television set as a muted news report shows disturbing images of the different U.S. cities that were attacked.
PAN out to see the mostly empty bar. Sitting in a booth near the window are three familiar faces. Seth, Ron and Roy. All with solemn, tired looks on their faces.
SETH
(watching the screen)
I can’t believe this. This is completely insane.
RON
Abaddon is giving a speech tonight in Central Park. He is expected to announce something big. We must take our stand. Here and now. The country is getting behind him, if we don’t stop him soon it will be too late. We can all meet at the safe-house tonight, go over the plans.

They both nod half-heartedly.
RON (cont.)
We need to locate Doug and Rose. Seth, when was the last time you saw her?
SETH
Two days ago...few hours before the bombs hit. I left her at my clock shop.

SETH

Seth looks broken as he imagines the worst for her. Roy pats his back comfortingly.
ROY
I’m sure she’s fine.
SETH
Not if she was at the shop. It was too close to the impact zone, I’m sure of it.
RON
She knew the risks, Seth. We all did.

Seth glares at him angrily, not appreciative of his cold demeanor.
SETH
What about Doug? Nobody has spoken with him?
What about Doug? Nobody has spoken with him?
Ron shakes his head “no”.
RON
We need to find them both, if they are still alive. We need all the backup we can get.
SETH
(upset)
We need to find them to make sure they are okay!
RON
You don’t think I’m upset? They were my friends, Seth!
SETH
Were they your friends? Are you sure they weren’t just pawns brought along to carry out your plans?!?

Roy, seeing things are getting out of hand, tries to settle them both down.
ROY
Guys, guys. We need to stick together, we’re all we’ve got right now.
Guys, guys. We need to stick together, we’re all we’ve got right now.
They don’t even hear him.
RON
You think that’s all they were to me? Pawns? I’ve been with them for a long time Seth, they knew the dangers of what we were doing. They did what they did regardless. If they did not make it, then yes I am saddened. But right now I don’t have time to be upset. I...we need to focus on the task at hand! Before this situation spirals out of control even more.
SETH
I’m done with this crap! It’s over, Abaddon won! There is no more task at hand. Games over.

Seth stands up and marches to the door furiously.
ROY

SETH
(back to them walking out the door)
No, I’ll find her!

SETH

No, I’ll find her!
Roy starts to stand up, but Ron stops him.
RON
Let him go.
Let him go.
Roy hesitates a moment before sitting back down.
INT. DOUG’S APARTMENT - DAY
Doug walks from one room to the next, holding a cell phone to his ear. He paces around each room nervously.
DOUG
Damn it!
Damn it!
He takes the phone from his ear and curiously looks at the display screen. He dials a number again and returns it to his ear.
He continues pacing as we hear the phone ringing.
SECRETARY (O.S.)
U.N. Headquarters. How may I direct your call?
DOUG
I would like to speak to Charles Abaddon.
SECRETARY (O.S.)
I’m sorry Sir, Mr. Abaddon is in a meeting right now. Can I take your name and number?

DOUG
I would like to speak to Charles Abaddon.
SECRETARY (O.S.)
I’m sorry Sir, Mr. Abaddon is in a meeting right now. Can I take your name and number?
He shakes his head in frustration.
DOUG
What? No! I need to talk to him right now!
SECRETARY (O.S.)
I’m sorry, Sir. He is not to be disturbed at this time. I’ll advise you to call back at another time.
DOUG
I’m not going to call –
What? No! I need to talk to him right now!
SECRETARY (O.S.)
I’m sorry, Sir. He is not to be disturbed at this time. I’ll advise you to call back at another time.
DOUG
I’m not going to call –
CLICK. She has hung up. Doug pulls at his air in anger and fiercely throws his phone against the wall.
He kneels down to the floor in the middle of the living room, which we now see is covered in scattered white notebook paper. He begins rummaging through it.
INT. U.N. HEADQUARTERS – DAY
Charles sits behind his office desk, reading through an unknown file. The door SWINGS open and Charlotte enters.
CHARLOTTE
Sir, may I have a word with you?
Sir, may I have a word with you?
He smiles and motions for her to sit.
CHARLES
Of course, Charlotte. How can I help you?
Of course, Charlotte. How can I help you?
She smiles coyly as she hesitates slightly.
CHARLOTTE
I know that you didn’t...umm, approve of my relationship with Mark, Sir. But I really don’t know who else to go to.
CHARLES
I’m sorry?
CHARLOTTE
I haven’t talked to Mark since the morning before the attacks. I’m afraid, well I’m afraid he might have been in the blast radius.

CHARLES
I’m sorry?
CHARLOTTE
I haven’t talked to Mark since the morning before the attacks. I’m afraid, well I’m afraid he might have been in the blast radius.
She chokes up a bit, struggling to finish. He quickly walks around the desk and puts his arm around her comfortingly.
CHARLES
Charlotte, I have a mass amount of resources. I promise you that I will find him. I see you care about him, and he is my friend too. I’ll find him.
Charlotte, I have a mass amount of resources. I promise you that I will find him. I see you care about him, and he is my friend too. I’ll find him.
Through the damp cheeks she manages to muster up a small smile.
CHARLOTTE
Thank you Charles. It means a lot to me.
Thank you Charles. It means a lot to me.
He hugs her tightly as she buries her face into his shoulder.
INT. HOSPITAL – 1989 – DAY
The hospital is quiet and unusually calm. A random nurse walks by the front doors, smiling at a patient.
Suddenly the doors BURST open and EMT’s rush in pushing a gurney. Marianne trails behind them desperately trying to keep her eyes on the gurney.
DOCTOR
What happened?
EMT
Fell off of a bridge. Was underwater for at least 8 minutes.
DOCTOR
Is he breathing?
EMT
Barely.

Marianne erupts in tears as she follows.
MARIANNE
Please! Is he going to be okay?!?
DOCTOR
Ma’am, I’m going to do all I can.

DOCTOR
Ma’am, I’m going to do all I can.
He looks sternly at a nearby nurse, then back to the EMT.
DOCTOR
Move him to OR 8.
Move him to OR 8.
The nurse casually takes Marianne’s arm slowing her down as she helplessly watches them wheel Charles down the corridor. His face is bloody and turning a strange blue color.
NURSE
Ma’am I need you to stay with me. He is going to help your...?
MARIANNE
Son. It’s my son!
NURSE
Okay, he is going to do all he can to help your son. I need to get some information from you, please follow me.

She follows, but keeps her eyes toward the corridor until they turn and are out of sight.
INT. U.N. HEADQUARTERS – DAY
Charles’ office again. He is turned in his chair, as not to be seen by the AUDIENCES VIEW. He stares out of the window, speaking to someone on the telephone.
CHARLES
Thank you so much. You’re a life saver, did I ever tell you that?
Thank you so much. You’re a life saver, did I ever tell you that?
He chuckles spinning around in his chair.
CHARLES
Okay, dear. Thank you again. Bye.
Okay, dear. Thank you again. Bye.
He gently sets the phone back to the receiver and pushes a button on the intercom system.
SECRETARY (O.S.)
Yes, Mr. Abaddon?
CHARLES
Could you send Miss Long into my office right away?
SECRETARY
Of course.
Yes, Mr. Abaddon?
CHARLES
Could you send Miss Long into my office right away?
SECRETARY
Of course.
Charles clicks the button once again and leans back in his chair. He looks completely exhausted as he rubs the weariness from his eyes.
BEAT.
Charlotte enters, still looking disoriented as before.
CHARLES
Please, have a seat.
Please, have a seat.
She sits, waiting for the news.
CHARLES (cont.)
Charlotte, I have good news and bad news.
Charlotte, I have good news and bad news.
She nods solemnly, doing her best to keep her emotions in check.
CHARLES (cont.)
I realize this is hard, so I’m just going to give it to you straight. I found Mark. He’s in a hospital only about 5 miles from here. St. Anthony. Bad news is, well, he’s in the hospital. I’m not sure exactly how bad it is or what happened. I just want you to be ready for anything when you get there.
CHARLOTTE
Thank you so much Charles! Do you—

She joyfully smiles, wiping away a tear.
CHARLOTTE
I’ll be there tonight. I want to be at Central Park for your speech. I have been getting a lot of calls from reporters and citizens alike. They LOVE you. N.Y. Times today said that you are the key to turning this nation around. Can you believe it?

He smiles modestly.
CHARLES
Don’t worry about politics now Charlotte. Go see Mark. Tell him I said to get well.
CHARLOTTE
Thank you again.

CHARLOTTE
Thank you again.
He grins and kindly nods for her to go see Mark. The intercom buzzes as she exits. Charles pushes the button.
CHARLES
Yes?
SECRETARY (O.S.)
Sir, your wife is on line one.
CHARLES
Okay, thank you.
Yes?
SECRETARY (O.S.)
Sir, your wife is on line one.
CHARLES
Okay, thank you.
Charles pushes the intercom button. He takes a deep breath and presses line one, picking up the receiver.
CHARLES
Sydney? Is everything alright?
SYDNEY (O.S.)
Charles? What the hell is going on!?!
CHARLES
Calm down, Syd.
Sydney? Is everything alright?
SYDNEY (O.S.)
Charles? What the hell is going on!?!
CHARLES
Calm down, Syd.
Her voice is full of rage as it blares through the receiver.
SYDNEY (O.S.)
Calm down? You want me to calm down?!? How did you know Charles? What kind of stuff are you into?
CHARLES
Sydney, you know I can’t discuss these things. Especially not over the phone. We just got some intel a couple days before. About an attack.
SYDNEY (O.S.)
Why couldn’t you stop it? Do you realize how many people died, Charles?

Why couldn’t you stop it? Do you realize how many people died, Charles?
Charles cracks his neck, trying not to get overly angry with her.
CHARLES
I was powerless to stop it! It was too late for us to stop it, that’s all I know. You think I am enjoying this? All these people died and all I was able to save was my family? Do you think I enjoy that guilt?

Silence.
CHARLES (cont.)
You just have to trust me, Syd. Everything I’m doing is for us. For you and Thomas.
SYDNEY (O.S.)
I’m sorry, Charles. There is something strange about this. I’m not sure what it is, but there is something.

Another BEAT. Sydney sighs over the phone.
SYDNEY (O.S.)
I just need time to think. We need some time apart. Straighten out my head.

Charles begins to interject, but is stopped by Sydney.
SYDNEY (O.S.)
(obviously close to tears)
I’m sorry Charles. I have to go. Good luck tonight. I’ll call you later.

CLICK. She’s gone. Charles sets the phone down, his face flushed.
EXT. STREETS OF NYC – DAY
START MUSICAL MONTAGE TO AUDIOSLAVE’S “LIKE A STONE”
Seth wanders the run down street close to ground zero. The buildings are abandoned, windows shattered from looters. A few random fires burn all around him. This is our first close up look at the chaos caused by the attacks.
Seth searches the empty cars desperately. A few random men run across the street ahead, carrying large boxes, probably stolen goods. Seth sighs as he continues trekking down the deserted street.
FLASHBACK SEQUENCE
-- Seth is in his Clock Shop the first time he lays eyes on Rose. She enters, looking as beautiful as ever.
-- The two of them sit around a small table at a coffee shop, smiling and enjoying each others company.
-- Lastly we see the shop on fire, after Seth has carried Frank out. Rose tells him to be careful before he takes off in his Blazer.
END FLASHBACK SEQUENCE
Seth is now toward the end of the street. He comes to a crossroad and looks long and hard down each direction. Finally he turns left and continues walking.

INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM – 1989 – EVENING
Marianne sits in a small padded chair, staring at the wall hypnotically. A doctor enters and Marianne stands up awaiting the news.
MARIANNE
Is he okay?
DOCTOR
Miss Carter your son seems to have suffered a head injury when he fell. It looks as though he took a hit on some rocks pretty bad. Luckily we were able to clear out his lungs of any excess water.

She smiles slightly. The first time in what seems to her like years.
DOCTOR (cont.)
I know this is good news to you, but know we are not out of the woods yet. He IS breathing normally now, but he has yet to awaken.
MARIANNE
What do you mean? How long are they usually out?
I know this is good news to you, but know we are not out of the woods yet. He IS breathing normally now, but he has yet to awaken.
MARIANNE
What do you mean? How long are they usually out?
He struggles to find the best words.
DOCTOR
I’m sorry, Miss Carter. It’s not because of the sedatives.
MARIANNE
I don’t understand? Is he going to wake up?
I’m sorry, Miss Carter. It’s not because of the sedatives.
MARIANNE
I don’t understand? Is he going to wake up?
He shrugs.
DOCTOR
Honestly...it is impossible to tell. Sometimes they wake up in a few hours, few days, few months. But sometimes they don’t wake up at all.

The small ounce of happiness that rushed into Marianne has now evaporated and is filled with confusion and grief. The doctor politely smiles and backs out of the room, leaving Marianne to weep alone.
INT. AMBULANCE – DAY
Inside the crashed ambulance all is silent. We see a bit of movement from below some debris. Suddenly Rose’s head pops up, she looks very disoriented.
She struggles to move inside the cramped ambulance. She hears a soft moan and pushes away a portion of the clutter. Beneath it is Frank. His eyes are open but he grimaces in pain.
ROSE
Frank? Are you okay?
Frank? Are you okay?
She moves more of it to reveal Frank has a large gash on his abdomen and it is bleeding heavily.
ROSE (cont.)
Can you stand? We need to get out of here.
Can you stand? We need to get out of here.
Some commotion is heard outside. Rose stops dead in her tracks, remaining completely still.
BEAT.
The ambulance double doors fly open and a small group of men dressed in hazmat suits and sporting assault rifles stand in the hazy light.
They aim their rifles at Rose.
MAN IN SUIT
(distorted voice)
What happened here?
(distorted voice)
What happened here?
Rose looks at him wide-eyed with her hands in the air.
MAN IN SUIT (cont.)
You need to come with us.
You need to come with us.
Two of the men climb aboard the vehicle and lift Rose to her feet.
ROSE
What’s going on? What happened?
What’s going on? What happened?
They help her out of the back and Rose gets her first look at the destroyed city. The sun is virtually gone due to the smoke and haze that hangs in the air.
They lead her over to a small military tanker truck.
MAN IN SUIT
We were nuked. Get in.
We were nuked. Get in.
She continues to look at the city in a state of shock.
ROSE
Please, my friend is still in there. He’s hurt pretty badly.
Please, my friend is still in there. He’s hurt pretty badly.
He shuts the door as she climbs in.
MAN IN SUIT
We’ll take care of it.
We’ll take care of it.
She watches as he heads back toward the crashed ambulance.
INT. ST. ANTHONY HOSPITAL – HALLWAY - EVENING
Charlotte stands outside of a doorway, leaned against the wall. The halls are completely chaotic with nurses and doctors rushing in every direction.
BEAT.
A doctor exits the door Charlotte stands next to. They exchange friendly smiles.
DOCTOR
Okay, you can go in and see him if you’d like. Just to warn you, he is not in good condition and may look slightly odd with his bandages. He has suffered very severe burns, so it is a necessary precaution. He is still sedated right now, so please make it brief.

She nods and enters the room.
INT. ST. ANTHONY HOSPITAL – MARK’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS
She slowly enters the dimly lit room. As she rounds the corner and sees Mark on the bed she freezes.
His face and arms are completely bandaged similar to a mummy. His eyes are closed and his chest rhythmically moves up and down as he sleeps.
Charlotte wipes a tear from her eye and approaches the bed. She takes a seat next to him in a chair.
BEAT.
She gently rubs his bandaged hand. A small portion of his badly burnt fingers poke out through the wraps.
CHARLOTTE
Mark, I don’t know if you can hear me. I miss you. I hope you can get through this, I’ll be here for you when you wake up.
(BEAT)
I cannot believe this has happened. They are saying the deaths will possibly number in the hundred-thousands.

(BEAT)
I cannot believe this has happened. They are saying the deaths will possibly number in the hundred-thousands.
His eyes flutter a bit and Charlotte lovingly smiles.
CHARLOTTE
It’s been bothering me though. They haven’t said who did it or who they suspect did it yet. But the moment it happened all I thought about was me and Charles’ trip to Syria. While we were there he met someone. His name is Amir Asheri, the terrorist. He told me it was part of a sting operation of some sort. But I also know that the morning of the attacks Charles got his family out of town. It’s just confusing, I think maybe our government knew about it. But why couldn’t they stop it?

Another long BEAT as Charlotte watches Mark sleep. She sighs and lies her head down next to his hand.
CHARLOTTE (cont.)
I’m going to stay here with you for a couple hours. I have to be at Charles’ speech tonight, but will come back as soon as it’s over.

Her grip on his hand tightens as her eyes slowly shut.
INT. SAFEHOUSE – EVENING
Inside the abandoned house Ron and Roy sit around a wooden table as in the previous episode.
ROY
He’ll show. He just needed to cool off.
Ron doesn’t seem too sure as he stares through the window.
BEAT.
RON
We don’t have a lot of time.
Ron reaches to the floor and picks up a large black duffel bag. He unzips it and begins pulling out several different assortments of guns and lays them on the table in front of Roy.
Roy cringes at the sight of them, obviously not comfortable around guns.
ROY
What’s this?
RON
These are guns.
What’s this?
RON
These are guns.
Roy rolls his eyes.
ROY
What are they for?
RON
What are they for? Am I the only one who is ready to go through with this? We all agreed, this HAS to happen. If we are in, then everyone takes a gun.
What are they for?
RON

BEAT.
Footsteps come from behind them as Ron and Roy turn to the doorway.
It’s Seth.
He approaches the small table. He and Ron exchange awkward nods.
SETH
I’m in.
I’m in.
Ron smiles brightly and hands him the duffel bag.
RON
Good. This one’s for you.
SETH
No word on Rose or Doug?
Good. This one’s for you.
SETH
No word on Rose or Doug?
He shakes his head gravely.
RON
Okay, tonight is it. Tonight we take care of this once and for all. Tonight we make a stand. All of us. If Seth cannot get a shot, one of us takes it. That’s just how it has to be now.
Okay, tonight is it. Tonight we take care of this once and for all. Tonight we make a stand. All of us. If Seth cannot get a shot, one of us takes it. That’s just how it has to be now.
Ron hands Roy a gun. He hesitates before reluctantly taking it.
RON (cont.)
Speech is in about an hour at Central Park. We better get going. I have to make a quick stop first, so I’ll catch up.

Another noise comes from behind. Ron spins quickly and points a pistol toward the doorway.
BEAT.
EVA slowly enters the room. Long stare down between the four individuals.
RON
Who are you?
Who are you?
BEAT.
Eva moves closer the group, Ron doesn’t lower his gun. Eva speaks with a thick Russian accent. Her voice is soft and pure.
EVA
My name is Eva Sidorov.
(looks at Seth)
Was one time supposed to be Eva Lyons.

Was one time supposed to be Eva Lyons.
Seth’s eyes widen and a look of realization appears on his face.
SETH
Eva? Tommy’s Eva?
EVA
Yes. Could you please point that away?
Eva? Tommy’s Eva?
EVA
Yes. Could you please point that away?
Ron looks at Seth, who nods. He lowers it, but remains on-guard.
EVA (cont.)
Thank you. I want to help you.
RON
Help us?
EVA
Eliminate Abaddon.
Thank you. I want to help you.
RON
Help us?
EVA
Eliminate Abaddon.
Everyone stares at the petite-statured Eva in shock.
EXT. REFUGEE CAMP – EVENING
MARIE, a REDCROSS worker leads a small group of people through a makeshift refugee camp. In the small row of people we see Rose, who looks at the surrounding people in horror.
On both sides of her, stretching for what looks like miles are small stations setup with victims of the attacks waiting for treatment. Burn victims of all race and age, people with bodily injuries such as gashes and wounds, etc.
Rose hurries the front and walks next to Marie.
ROSE
Is there any information? On what happened?
Is there any information? On what happened?
Marie stares straight ahead not missing a beat, seemingly in a hurry.
MARIE
It was an apparent attack. By whom, I do not know. News has been reporting today that our government has a strong hunch on the perpetrators. Charles Abaddon is scheduled to give a speech at Central Park later tonight on the matter.
ROSE
Nuclear?
MARIE
Afraid so. Seven cities across the country.
ROSE
My God...
MARIE
My thoughts as well. Anyway, news is blasted with the hoopla over this speech tonight. He’s become quite popular since the attacks.

INT. HOSPITAL – 1989 – NIGHT
Marianne still sits next to Charles’ hospital bed. She wipes her eyes with a tissue and stuffs it in her purse, where we see there are many, many more.
MARIANNE
Charlie. Can you hear me?
Charlie. Can you hear me?
CLOSE on Charles as he lies comatose. His head is shaved bald and a large incision runs down the side from impact on the rocks.
Marianne lowers her head completely exhausted physically and emotionally as well.
MARIANNE (cont.)
I just want you to know I love you, Charlie. It’s been two weeks, but I will never give up on you. Please wake up. For me.

BEAT.
CHARLES
Mom?
Mom?
Marianne’s head shoots up with a deer-in-headlights look on her face.
MARIANNE
Charlie! Oh my God!
Charlie! Oh my God!
He looks around the room in confusion.
CHARLES
Where am I?
MARIANNE
In the hospital, honey. You had an accident, but you’re going to be alright.

Marianne now sheds tears of joy rather than sorrow as she hugs Charles tightly, laughing and crying at the same time.

EXT. HANGAR – CONTINUOUS
The engines ROAR and the jets speed down the track and head into the skies at an amazing speed.
EXT. REFUGEE CAMP – EVENING
Rose walks through the rows of beds, holding a bottle of water. She looks around timidly, but most of the people don’t even notice her.
MARQUEZ (O.S.)
Hey you!
Hey you!
She turns to see Frank sitting on a bed only a few feet away. His leg is propped up with a sling. She quickly goes over to him.
ROSE
Frank! You’re okay.
Frank! You’re okay.
He chuckles.
MARQUEZ
I’m alive. That’s good enough for me.
ROSE
Your leg is okay?
I’m alive. That’s good enough for me.
ROSE
Your leg is okay?
He shrugs and grins.
MARQUEZ
Just a small fracture. Not a big deal compared to some of the things I’ve seen since I got here.
ROSE
I know.
(BEAT)
Will you be alright here? By yourself?

Frank looks confused.
MARQUEZ
By myself?
ROSE
I’ve gotta’ find Seth.
MARQUEZ
I think the best thing right now is for you to stay here. You don’t know how to find him, if he’s even...alive.
By myself?
ROSE
I’ve gotta’ find Seth.
MARQUEZ
I think the best thing right now is for you to stay here. You don’t know how to find him, if he’s even...alive.
She doesn’t hesitate. Her mind is already made up.
ROSE
I have to believe he is, Frank. Until I know for sure, I will find him. And I think I know where he might be.
I have to believe he is, Frank. Until I know for sure, I will find him. And I think I know where he might be.
HONK! A loud horn sounds causing Marquez and Rose to look behind them.
The driver of a large military tanker trunk pokes his head out of the window and looks directly at Rose.
DRIVER
Ma’am if you’re coming it’s time to head out!
Ma’am if you’re coming it’s time to head out!
She turns back to Marquez who slyly smiles.
MARQUEZ
I guess I wasted my time trying to talk you out of it.
ROSE
Yes.

She hugs him lovingly.
MARQUEZ

She heads toward the truck.

She climbs in the back of the truck. As it drives away Rose and Marquez continue to look at each other sadly.
INT. ST. ANTHONY’S HOSPITAL – EVENING
CLOSE on Mark’s wrapped face. His eyes burst open. He blinks a few times and they dart in different directions as he tries to get familiar with his surroundings.
PAN OUT to see Charlotte in the chair next to him asleep.
Mark tries to speak, but all that comes out is a faint whisper.
MARK
Charlotte...
Charlotte...
She doesn’t budge.
MARK (cont.)
(a little louder)
Charlotte...
(a little louder)
Charlotte...
This time her head pops up. It takes her a moment before she realizes Mark is awake. She jumps in shock.
CHARLOTTE
Mark! You’re awake!
Mark! You’re awake!
She jumps up frantically and rushes to the bed, kneeling down next to him.
CHARLOTTE (cont.)
I’m so sorry about what happened –
I’m so sorry about what happened –
Mark interrupts her by placing his finger to his lips and making a soft “shhh” sound. He waves with his hand for her to come closer, which she does.
She leans in as he lifts his head to her ear, whispering something that cannot be heard.
BEAT.
Charlotte pulls her head back and looks quizzically back at him.
INT. CAR – EVENING
Seth drives as Eva sits contently next to him. She passively watches out the window and the anarchy that surrounds them.
BEAT.
SETH

First look?
Seth smiles and nods.
SETH
Yes, Tommy had that effect.
EVA
Yes. Then he went to Iran. I worried every night and every day about him in Iran. I was afraid he would be killed.
(BEAT)
It’s funny, I guess I should have worried about him here at home.

She now turns to face Seth with a pained expression on her face.
EVA (cont.)
I was sad for a long time. I needed ambition. So I decide to take out all my anger and point it in right direction. So I learn how to defend myself. I learn to use guns.

Seth puts his hand on her shoulder in a friendly manner.
SETH
I’m very sorry about what happened to Tommy. He was a good man.
EVA
Yes he was. He talked about you all the time. He admired you.
I’m very sorry about what happened to Tommy. He was a good man.
EVA
Yes he was. He talked about you all the time. He admired you.
Another long BEAT. Ahead of the car is a eerie view of the sunset. It is just a thick orange color seeping through the haze and fog of the N.Y. sky.
EVA (cont.)
It was very hard when I got news about his death. It was like I had died myself, you know?
SETH
Yes, I understand completely.
EVA
When I was with him it was great. I could go to sleep at evening time and sleep until noon the next day. I would feel no guilt for sleeping so much. When I wake up next to him I know I’m exactly where I want to be. Where I’m supposed to be. It is great feeling.

Seth nods again and smiles through the overwhelming images of Rose in his mind.
SETH
Again, I understand completely. I think I found that in someone as well.

They take a left turn and head down another deserted city street.
INT. BLACK TOWNCAR – EVENING
Inside the luxurious car sit Charles, Charlotte and a couple of secret service-type body guards. Charles looks as calm as ever as they get closer to Central Park.
One of the guards puts his hand to his ear, listening closely.
GUARD
Sir, we have been getting a large amount of intel-reports that an assassination attempt will be perpetrated tonight. I would advise you to think this over, we can always do a televised speech from the U.N. headquarters.
Sir, we have been getting a large amount of intel-reports that an assassination attempt will be perpetrated tonight. I would advise you to think this over, we can always do a televised speech from the U.N. headquarters.
Charles rolls his eyes nonchalantly.
CHARLES
This wouldn’t be the first time threats have been made toward me. These people need hope. Courage. Me hiding behind secured walls will be make much less of an impact than if I go out and speak to them in person. Right next to ground zero.

Charlotte interjects, looking desperate.
CHARLOTTE
Charles, I think maybe you should listen to him. This can be delayed, if needed. You don’t need to be putting yourself in harms way.

BEAT.
CHARLOTTE (cont.)
Yes the people do need hope and courage. But they also need a leader. They need you, alive and well.
Yes the people do need hope and courage. But they also need a leader. They need you, alive and well.
Charles smiles deviously.
CHARLES
I can promise you right now Charlotte that nothing will happen to me tonight. You have my word.
I can promise you right now Charlotte that nothing will happen to me tonight. You have my word.
The car slows to a stop as Charlotte watches Charles closely, her face covered in fear.
GUARD
Are you sure about this Sir?
CHARLES
Absolutely.
Are you sure about this Sir?
CHARLES
Absolutely.
The guard shrugs and opens the car door. He exits followed by Abaddon, who smiles and waves at the immensely big crowd that has already formed in and around the Park.
INT. CARTER RESIDENCE – BEDROOM - NIGHT
Marianne lies absolutely still in her bed, the sheet half-draped across her night-gown covered body. Some clanking noises can be heard in another room.
INT. CARTER RESIDENCE – KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
Charles is awake and rummaging through drawers. His hair has almost fully grown back since the “accident”.
He pours a glass of milk and places it in the microwave, heating it just a bit.
While it heats he takes a pill from a small bottle and splits it in two.
BEEP. The microwave sounds off and Charles pulls out the glass of steaming milk. He holds the capsule over the glass and pours the white powdery ingredients into the milk, stirring it up afterward.
INT. CARTER RESIDENCE – BEDROOM – CONTINUOUS
Marianne lies exactly the same as she did before. A creak is heard on the floorboards and Marianne jumps up to a sitting position.
In a quick flash the DARK FIGURE quickly wisps into the shadows by the closet door. Marianne rubs her eyes, unsure of whether she is seeing things. As the blur dissipates she is startled to see Charles next to her bed holding the glass of milk.
MARIANNE
Charlie? What’s this?
CHARLES
Warm milk. Exactly how you like it.
Charlie? What’s this?
CHARLES
Warm milk. Exactly how you like it.
Marianne smiles lovingly and takes the offered milk. She takes a sip of it.
MARIANNE
Mmmm…it’s perfect.
CHARLES
Goodnight mommy.
MARIANNE
Goodnight sweetie.
Charles walks to the door as Marianne quickly drinks. He smiles eerily into the CAMERA.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK – EVENING
The crowd has nearly tripled from what we last saw and is now numbering in the thousands. One face stands out as he walks through the mob of people.
Ron Luther.
Out of the corner of his eye he sees Doug walking up to a small restroom facility. He enters the men’s room. Ron quickly follows, constantly looking over his shoulder in a paranoid manner.
INT. MEN’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS
Ron creeps through the door and around the corner. Doug stands silently at a urinal, his back to Ron.
After he finishes he turns around and nearly walks right into him. Ron grabs him by the collar and violently throws him into the wall.
DOUG
What the hell are you doing!?!
What the hell are you doing!?!
Ron looks coldly at Doug who, if he had not just relieved himself, would probably have soaked pants right now.
RON
Cut the crap, Doug. How long have you been feeding information to him?
Cut the crap, Doug. How long have you been feeding information to him?
BEAT.
RON (cont.)
How long?!?
How long?!?
He slams him hard against the wall again.
DOUG
Not long, I swear. I needed money, Ron. I’m sorry!
Not long, I swear. I needed money, Ron. I’m sorry!
Ron doesn’t show an ounce of sympathy. He reaches to his belt and pulls out a small 9MM. He puts it to Doug’s head frightening him beyond belief.
RON
You’re pathetic. A disgrace.
You’re pathetic. A disgrace.
Doug tears up as he closes his eyes shamefully.
DOUG
Please, Ron! I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.
Please, Ron! I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.
He pulls the hammer back and Doug whimpers loudly.
DOUG (cont.)
(desperately)
I can help you. I know I screwed up, let me straighten it out.
(BEAT)
I can kill him. I can kill Charles Abaddon.
(desperately)
I can help you. I know I screwed up, let me straighten it out.
(BEAT)
I can kill him. I can kill Charles Abaddon.
Ron tightens his jaw as his finger applies pressure to the trigger.
DOUG (cont.)
I’ll do it, Ron. Let me do it.
I’ll do it, Ron. Let me do it.
Ron grimaces as he pulls the pistol from his head. He couldn’t pull the trigger.
RON
I NEVER want to see you again.
I NEVER want to see you again.
Ron releases Doug, who slouches down to a sitting position against the wall, tears streaming down his face. He exits, leaving Doug in the restroom alone.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK – MEN’S RESTROOM – CONTINUOUS
Ron exits the restroom, still holding his pistol in his hand. As he walks away he is immediately surrounded by uniformed soldiers carrying automatic weapons.
SOLDIER #1
Freeze!
Freeze!
Ron looks stupefied as he stops dead in his tracks.
SOLDIER #1 (cont.)
Drop your weapon and place your hands on your head!
Drop your weapon and place your hands on your head!
Ron slowly puts the gun to the ground. The guards move in closer.
SOLDIER #1 (cont.)
Is this him?
SOLDIER #2
Yeah, that’s him.
Is this him?
SOLDIER #2
Yeah, that’s him.
Soldier #1 begins applying handcuffs to Ron’s wrists.
SOLDIER #1
Ron Ezra Luther, you need to come with us.
RON
What exactly did I do?
SOLDIER #1
You are wanted by the FBI, Mr. Luther.
RON
For?
SOLDIER #1
Possible terrorist activity. We believe you have connections with a man named Amir Asheri.
Ron Ezra Luther, you need to come with us.

Ron looks completely confused as the soldiers remain cautious with their guns aimed.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK – EVENING
Eva and Seth worm through the large crowd. Eva carries a large black duffle bag. She turns to Seth, who is looking around nervously.
EVA
Thank you Seth for bringing me here. I must go.
SETH
Go? Go where?
Thank you Seth for bringing me here. I must go.
SETH
Go? Go where?
He doesn’t get an answer as he watches Eva disappear into the crowd. He goes back to scouting the area until he sees—
ROSE!
She is about a dozen yards away, wandering aimlessly. Her clothing and face are dirty and she looks like she’s been through hell.
Seth hurries over to her and her eyes light up when she sees him. They exchange a quick hug as they meet.
ROSE
Seth! I’m so glad you’re okay.
Seth! I’m so glad you’re okay.
Seth smiles at her.
ROSE (cont.)
Frank’s at a refugee camp about twenty miles south of here. He’s okay too. I knew I’d find you here!
Frank’s at a refugee camp about twenty miles south of here. He’s okay too. I knew I’d find you here!
Now they are both smiles and seem very happy to see each other.
A man steps onto the stage and performs a mic check.
BEAT.
ROSE
You’re going to try again, aren’t you?
You’re going to try again, aren’t you?
Seth nods solemnly, waiting for her angry response.
ROSE (cont.)
Good.
Good.
Seth’s eyes widen in a shocking manner. She smiles at his silly look.
ROSE
Where are you going?
Where are you going?
Seth nods toward a Library rooftop. Rose acknowledges it.
SETH
What are you going to do?
What are you going to do?
She thinks for a short moment.
ROSE
I’ll stay down here on the ground. Keep an eye on him.
I’ll stay down here on the ground. Keep an eye on him.
They hug again, this one quite longer than the first.
SETH
Be careful.
ROSE
You too.
Be careful.
ROSE
You too.
Seth walks toward the Library. Rose watches for a few moments before heading in the opposite direction.
BEAT.
As she walks she is quickly turned around by someone. It’s Seth again. Without a word he kisses her passionately.
When he pulls back she smiles blissfully.
SETH
Don’t want to have never done that.
Don’t want to have never done that.
He heads away again, with a new pep in his step. Again she watches a few moments, still smiling sheepishly.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK – NEAR STAGE – NIGHT
JEAN SHAW, a young news reporter for CNN is getting herself ready for her live coverage of the speech.
JEAN
Willie, I want the camera ready to film in five. You got it?
She rolls her eyes sarcastically as another woman finishes applying powder on her face.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK – STAGE – NIGHT
The scene from the “PILOT” finally comes to fruition.
A large, empty stage is set up outdoors. A single spotlight shines directly in the center. Pan out to large crowds, numbering in the thousands, anxiously anticipating SOMETHING.
The crowd roars with excitement, smiles covering their faces. Charles Abaddon steps into the spotlight.
CHARLES
Welcome ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to a new beginning. I know things have been hard. We have all suffered many losses in recent times. But I am vowing, here and now, to bring an end to all American bloodshed!
The applause from the crowd grows considerably louder.
CHARLES (cont.)
We have all lost loved ones. Friends and family alike. We’ve been impacted greatly by the recent tragedies that have fallen on our country. But we will not stand down! We will continue to fight! We will fight until there is nothing more to fight for. The U.A. will become what the U.S.A. used to be.

The crowd now erupts in a wave of cheers. Charles stands under the spotlight, arms stretched toward them, taking it all in.
CHARLES (cont.)
So now, we let the rebuilding process begin. Tonight, my brothers and sisters, marks a new beginning. The lifting of the veil!

INT. LIBRARY – NIGHT
Seth quickly climbs the HUGE staircase leading to the libraries roof.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK – STAGE – NIGHT
Behind Charles the devastating N.Y.C. scene rests. Smoke billowing, fires burning, choppers flying. Buildings are crumbled and cars are overturned. Absolute chaos.
CHARLES
As you all know we’ve been attacked. I know our search was not as swift as it should have been, but here and now I am pleased to announce we have found the perpetrators of this attack and will be serving them justice. The justice that they deserve.
As you all know we’ve been attacked. I know our search was not as swift as it should have been, but here and now I am pleased to announce we have found the perpetrators of this attack and will be serving them justice. The justice that they deserve.
The crowd erupts once again, more and more people jumping on the Abaddon bandwagon.
CHARLES (cont.)
We have found the man who has masterminded the entire attack. I’m sure many of you have heard of him. His name is Amir Asheri.

BEAT.
CHARLES (cont.)
That’s right, the terrorist who was behind many bombings throughout the globe. Was even believed to have ties with Osama Bin Laden at one point before his death in 2010. Our intelligence has provided us with sufficient evidence proving that not only was Asheri partially responsible, but that he was trained in Iran for the attacks. And that his training and weaponry was funded by Russia.

The crowd has grown eerily silent, with the exception of a small amount of boos pouring out.
CHARLES (cont.)
But as I said before, these matters are being dealt with as we speak ladies and gentleman. I hope everyone will get behind me in pushing for the elimination of statehood. I would like to help lead our great country into a new world!
But as I said before, these matters are being dealt with as we speak ladies and gentleman. I hope everyone will get behind me in pushing for the elimination of statehood. I would like to help lead our great country into a new world!
The last hurrah brings in the loudest cheering yet. Charles smiles at the crowd, waving his hands in the air like a good politician.
The sounds slowly fades out.
CUT TO:
EXT. MOSCOW, RUSSIA – DAY
A seemingly normal day in a snow-covered Moscow. People roam the streets, dressed in full coats and gloves.
Slowly a loud RUMBLE is heard as it grows closer and closer. Louder and louder.
All of the citizens on the streets look up toward the sky as they see about a dozen sleek, black stealth bombers passing dangerously low.
The fear can be seen in their faces as they see MISSILES DROPPING DOWN UPON THEIR CITY!
Explosions sounds off in every direction as people scream and run for cover.
The retaliation has begun.

START MUSICAL MONTAGE TO PINK FLOYD’S “COMFORTABLY NUMB”
-- Ron is escorted toward a military vehicle by the soldiers from before. He has a complete look of submission and failure on his face.
-- Doug sits inside the bathroom, head resting against the cement wall. He opens his eyes quickly and jumps up in a hurry and exits.
-- Eva walks through the crowd silently, still carrying her black duffle bag.
-- Roy stands very close to the stage glaring up at Charles. He has nothing but bad intentions and disdain in his eyes.
-- Mark lies on his hospital bed, still hooked up to the different machines. Suddenly he flat-lines and nurses rush in. They do all they can to save him, but it looks to be of no avail as a doctor pulls down his mask and looks at his watch.
-- Charlotte stands alone at the side of the stage, intently watching Charles giving his speech.
-- Rose is at the edge of the crowd, but near the front. She blends in nicely with all the people. Dirty faces, dirty clothes and desperate expressions. She, like Roy, glares at Charles with disdain and anger. Something rarely seen in her eyes.
-- Seth is now on top of the library. He holds a high-tech looking sniper rifle. He watches the crowd closely before putting the gun on his shoulder. He stares through the scope, the reticule is directly on Charles’ forehead.
-- Young Charles stands outside his home as the sun is just starting to rise. Behind him is an ambulance. Charles watches as a body bag is wheeled out on a gurney. The neighbors all stand near the house watching sadly. Charles stares straight ahead hypnotically.
END OF MUSICAL MONTAGE
CUT TO:
EXT. CENTRAL PARK – STAGE – NIGHT
We pick up immediately where we left off with Charles waving to the crowd.
BOOM!
A loud gunshot is heard and Charles drops to the ground hard. The CAMERA shakes realistically, making it hard to see exactly what is happening.
A quick shot of Charles shows him lying on the ground, partially blocked by different security guards. His head is covered in blood.
