FADE IN:
On a TV Screen is an E! Entertainment News broadcast.
HOST
Hello Entertainment fans, tonight
we report on actress Joanne
Giovanni. Giovanni is a multi-time
award winner and former girlfriend
of Director Jack Hannigan. Staring
in several of his movies.
Several pictures are of JACK HANNIGAN and JOANNE GIOVANNI are
shown.
HOST (CONT'D)
Following their much publicized
break up, Giovanni has gone out on
her own. However her success has
been limited with a string of flops
both critically and at the box
office. The question remains, is
Giovanni the next hot thing in
Hollywood? Or is this Hollywood
starlet already a thing of the
past?
The final graphic reads "Hot-Thing or Has-Been?" As a jaunty
tune comes from the Television, we pull away revealing a
somewhat dingy bar.
INT. BAR - NIGHT
The last place you'd expect such a show to be played in.
Across the street is a series of bill boards advertising a
movie with the actress (Giovanni) from the TV.
Sitting at a stool by the bar, is a man. His hair long an
unkempt. He stares out of the billboard before turning back
to the bar, hanging his head thoughtfully.
His face is revealed for the first time... he is the Director
from the TV report Jack Hannigan. He looks up at the TV which
is still reporting on Joanne.
JACK HANNIGAN
Can you turn that off?
The BARTENDER watches the TV as he absentmindedly "cleans" a
glass with a filthy rag.
BARTENDER
Sorry pal, no can do.
JACK HANNIGAN
Why is it on anyway? I've been
coming to this bar for years and
I've never seen a woman in here.
BARTENDER
What's that got to do with
anything?
JACK HANNIGAN
Well your customers aren't exactly
the type of people who watch E! Are
they?
Jack signals around the bar, displaying the patrons of the
bar for the Bartender. They consist of over weight slovenly
males, all of them seem to drunk to notice the TV's even on
let alone what's playing on it.
BARTENDER
Maybe I enjoy it. Do I have to be a
woman to enjoy E! Is that what
you're saying?
JACK HANNIGAN
Well you're not exactly their
target demographic are you?
BARTENDER
Well how about I stop serving you?
Will that make me their target
demographic?
JACK HANNIGAN
No, that would just make you a bad
bartender.
BARTENDER
Smart ass.
The Bartender walks away as Jack sighs.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O.)
I suppose you're wondering why a
hot shot director like myself;
would be sitting in a dingy bar,
drinking and arguing with an
overweight bartender. Well it's a
simply story really, cliched, but
simple. It's a story about a
girl...
Jack lifts his beer bottle and takes a long hard swig from
it...
MATCH CUT:
INT. CAFETERIA - DAY
A young Jack Hannigan drinks from a Pepsi Bottle. He places
it back down on the table. His friends, RICKY & CHRIS laugh
as they fail to wrap strands of spaghetti around their forks.
RICKY
Jack, why don't you show this moron
how it's done ... ?
Jack is oblivious to it, his eyes transfixed on a girl
sitting across the room, a young Joanne Giovanni.
RICKY (CONT'D)
Jack?
ANGLE ON: Joanne lifting her tray off her table and walking
towards the group of boys. As she passes, she waves at Jack.
He smiles back at her and Ricky realizes why Jack is so
distracted.
RICKY (CONT'D)
Man, how long have you been in love
with that girl?
CHRIS
Oh he's not in love with her, he
just appreciates her in an artistic
way. Isn't that right Jacky?
JACK HANNIGAN
What? Yeah. That's right.
RICKY
Artistic or not, you better get
those stars out of your eyes and
pull that jaw up off the floor.
JACK HANNIGAN
Do I have to?
RICKY
Yeah. After all, you've gotta
direct that scene with her later...
JACK HANNIGAN
When she reads the words on the
script, it's as if they were
written just for her...
CHRIS
They were written just for her. You
wrote them.
JACK HANNIGAN
Right...
CHRIS
You also wrote that little kiss
scene.
JACK HANNIGAN
So?
RICKY
I'm sure, watching the girl you've
been in love with for the last
three years, make out with some
dude over and over and over again
will be really fun for you.
JACK HANNIGAN
You think it's to late for a re
write?
CHRIS
I'm gonna say yes.
RICKY
Now come on love-struck, we've got
class.
Ricky and Chris pull Jack to his feet and the trip head for
the exit.
CHRIS
(To Jack)
Next time you write some kiss
scene, make sure I'm cast in it.
Preferably with Joanne's friend
Katie.
JACK HANNIGAN
I'll see what I can do.
INT. DRAMA ROOM - DAY
The lights are on bright, Jack stands extremely focused
behind a camera; watching the scene in front of him.
JACK HANNIGAN
Alright, cut.
In front of him is Joanne Giovanni and a well built male by
the name of TOM.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Tom, why don't you take a walk.
Maybe practice kissing yourself in
a mirror or something.
TOM
You saying there's something wrong
with the way I kiss?
JACK HANNIGAN
Well, let's put it this way.
Slobbering over someone like a dog,
doesn't look great on camera.
TOM
(Advancing at Jack)
I should jam that camera down your
damn throat...
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You know what Tom. Maybe you should
take a walk. To calm down.
TOM
(Relenting)
Fine, but because you asked. Not
because he wants me to.
Tom reluctantly leaves.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You didn't have to be so rude.
JACK HANNIGAN
He was screwing up my scene.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Your scene? Oh I didn't know it was
your scene. Well I'm very sorry we
weren't up to scratch.
JACK HANNIGAN
No, you were fantastic. You're
always fantastic.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Well that's very sweet.
Joanne approaches Jack.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
About this kiss. Which way should I
lean? I want to get my good side.
JACK HANNIGAN
It doesn't matter. You don't have a
bad side.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
So, did you get these lines out of
a book or did you just think of
them all by yourself?
JACK HANNIGAN
Little of both.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Why don't you show me what you want
from this kiss?
JACK HANNIGAN
Is that an invitation?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Maybe.
JACK HANNIGAN
I prefer written invitations,
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack, a girl could go crazy waiting
for you to make a move. Now, shut
up and kiss me.
Joanne leans forward and kisses Jack.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
And the rest as they say, is
history...
MONTAGE
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
We spent the whole summer together.
We were happy --
-- Jack and Jo continue to work together, Jack directing, Jo
acting. They steal the occasionally glance, smiling
affectionately as they do.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O) (CONT'D)
We did everything together, No
matter how big or small --
-- Joanne helps Jack paint his room. Jack dabs his paint
brush on Jo's nose. It soon breaks down into an all out paint
fight between them.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O) (CONT'D)
And our friends were usually along
for the ride.
-- Pull back to reveal Ricky, Chris and Jo's friend KATIE
helping out with the painting. They join the paint war going
on, undoing all the work they have done thus far.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
And then, with three simple words --
it was over.
INT. FIELD - EVENING
Jack, Joanne along with Chris, Katie and Ricky are sitting in
a field, watching the sunset. Chris inches his hand towards
Katie's, she rolls her eyes and takes his hand in hers; much
to his satisfaction. He has a big grin on his face.
Jack, lies with his arm around Joanne. She sits up, a serious
expression on her face.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack -- I'm moving.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
In case you were wondering; that
was it.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Jack sits at his desk, he types furiously on the keyboard of
his computer. Finally he stops, looks frustrated and sighs.
He deletes all of his work without a second thought before
getting to his feet.
Jack collapses on the bed, staring at the phone across the
room.
Ricky enters and takes a seat, thumbing through various
nearby magazines. He doesn't even have to look at Jack to
know what Jack's doing.
RICKY
If you want to talk to her so bad,
just pick up the phone and call
her.
JACK HANNIGAN
I can't just call her. It's been
three months since she moved. She's
probably settled in and has new
friends and everything.
RICKY
Yeah, probably has a new boyfriend
too.
JACK HANNIGAN
What have you heard?
RICKY
Jack, I was joking.
Ricky lowers the magazine.
RICKY (CONT'D)
Jack, you have to get over her man.
JACK HANNIGAN
I can't. We were perfect together.
RICKY
Sickening is the word you're
looking for.
JACK HANNIGAN
We were meant to be together, you
know? I have that feeling.
RICKY
When you two were together, I had a
feeling too. Nausea.
JACK HANNIGAN
Very funny.
Jack continues to stare at the phone.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
It's just, I can't focus on
anything without her. When I wrote,
it was about her. When I directed,
it was easy cause she was there.
I'm --
RICKY
(Mocking Jack)
-- Nothing without her. She
completes me. She makes my world go
round. Without her in my life, I'm
just a beach without an ocean. Do
you have any idea how many times
I've heard this?
JACK HANNIGAN
A lot?
RICKY
More than somewhat. It ends now.
Now get ready, we have a screen
writing seminar to go to.
JACK HANNIGAN
Do I have to go?
RICKY
Yes.
JACK HANNIGAN
Can't I just stare at the phone
some more?
RICKY
Not if you want to retain the small
amount of pride you have left.
JACK HANNIGAN
Fine, I'll go. On one condition?
RICKY
What is it?
JACK HANNIGAN
You'll call Jo for me, and ask if
she's seeing someone else.
Ricky groans and heads for the door.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Ok, you don't have to call. I'll
come.
EXT. AUDITORIUM - NIGHT
Jack and Ricky arrive, meeting Chris and Katie who have
clearly become a couple, as they do.
KATIE
Hey Jack. I'm glad you came.
JACK HANNIGAN
Thanks.
CHRIS
So, does anyone actually know who
this guy is?
Chris points to the poster, advertising the guest speaker at
this Screen-Writing Seminar. Ricky shrugs, unaware of whom
the man featured on the poster is.
JACK HANNIGAN
He's written a bunch of stuff.
Mainly obscure independent movies
in the early nineties. Mostly
comedies. I hear he has his own
production company now.
KATIE
How do you know that?
JACK HANNIGAN
I watch a lot of obscure,
independent comedies from the early
nineties.
She laughs. Ricky shudders.
RICKY
It's freezing out here. You guys
wanna head inside?
INT. AUDITORIUM - NIGHT
Jack, Ricky, Katie and Chris are seated together. There is a
hustle and bustle around the auditorium. It ceases as the
lights go down.
A spotlight is focused centre stage as the main speaker,
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (the writer featured on the posters outside)
approaches the podium.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
This is where it all began. I was
lost without Jo, it was Damien
Williams who found me. Plucked me
out of obscurity and gave me the
kick in the ass I needed. He did
this, with one simple challenge...
Damien clears his throat. And pushes a button on a remote in
his hand. On the screen behind him, a slide showing Damien's
phone number and E-mail address is shown.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You don't have to be a great writer
to write a great story. It takes
patience, practice, dedication and
hard work.
ANGLE ON: The group, sitting in the audience. Ricky leans
over to Chris.
RICKY
(Whispered)
What a hack.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
A lot of the students I meet and
talk to at these seminars seem to
think they're great writers. And
that everything they write, is a
licence to print money if only they
could get it into the right hands.
Damien glances over his shoulder at the screen displaying his
contact details.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Meet the right hands. You never
have to worry about contacts again.
I know directors, I know producers.
Up there are my details, I suggest
you write them down. Right here and
now, I challenge any one of you to
write a great script. When you're
done, you send it to me. And I
promise I won't over look it.
Damien steps back from the podium. He pauses, leans forward
towards the microphone...
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Thank you very much.
Damien leaves the stage. There's a murmur of disbelief going
around the auditorium. The lights slowly, almost hesitantly
return.
RICKY
That was it?
CHRIS
I think so.
KATIE
At least we didn't have to pay.
RICKY
Speak for yourself. We can't all be
the offspring of Auditorium owners.
I had to buy two tickets. One for
myself, and one for mopey over
there.
Ricky gestures towards Jack. Jack looks ahead, enthralled at
what he has just heard. His face twitches into a smile.
EXT. AUDITORIUM, BACK ENTRANCE - NIGHT
As Damien Williams exits the Auditorium from the rear
entrance. Jack is waiting nearby to greet him.
JACK HANNIGAN
Mr. Williams?
Damien is taken aback to find someone waiting for him.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yeah?
JACK HANNIGAN
I was at the seminar -- well it
wasn't much of a seminar but --
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I suppose this has a point?
JACK HANNIGAN
Yeah, actually. I'd like to take
you up on your offer. I don't know
if I'm a great writer or even an
average one. I don't know if I can
write a great script. But I'm
dedicated to what I do - I was
dedicated --
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
What changed?
JACK HANNIGAN
Personal stuff. Guess it got in the
way.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You know what I do, when personal
stuff gets in the way of writing? I
write about it.
JACK HANNIGAN
(With a laugh)
Makes sense I guess. This is what
I've wanted to do all my life.
Write movies. I don't know if I can
write a great screenplay. But I'm
gonna try.
Damien laughs to himself.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You know, I've been doing this for
five years --
JACK HANNIGAN
Someone has been paying you to do
that for five years?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Shocking I know. But nevertheless.
Nobody has ever taken me up on my
challenge. Until now.
Congratulations --
JACK HANNIGAN
-- Jack, Jack Hannigan.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I hope to hear from you Jack.
JACK HANNIGAN
You will.
Damien nods, unlocks his car and prepares to enter.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
And Mr. Williams -- Damien pauses.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
That film you wrote, with the
monkey that solved crime. That was
a terrible movie --
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yes it was.
With a smile, Damien enters his car and drives away. Jack
smiles, having made some progress getting over Jo and with
his career.
INT. DAMIEN WILLIAMS OFFICE - DAY
Damien sits at the desk, his head down as he reads a script
in front of him.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
It took less than four months for
Damien Williams to hear from me.
Damien finally looks up from the script, Jack is sitting
patiently in front of him.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You know, this isn't bad.
JACK HANNIGAN
You sound surprised.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I am surprised. When you said you
were gonna take me up on my
challenge, I didn't think I'd ever
hear from you again. But here you
are...
JACK HANNIGAN
And with a script.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
A good script. How did you come up
with this?
JACK HANNIGAN
I don't know. So you like the idea?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yeah. Two people fall in love on a
plane trip to Australia. I like all
the little parts of the
relationship you manage to include,
like meeting the parents. All on
one plane ride. It's good stuff.
JACK HANNIGAN
Thanks.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You said you didn't know if you
could write a great screenplay. Now
we know you can.
JACK HANNIGAN
Now we know?
With a smile and a laugh Damien replies.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Now we know.
Jack's face lights up.
MONTAGE
-- Jack furiously types away at his keyboard, typing with his
left hand, lifting a coffee cup (one of many) and drinking
deeply from it.
-- Jack is handed several pages of notes on his latest draft
of the script. He reads one page, then the next, then the
third ... each page brings a slightly more disheartening
expression to his face.
-- Jack, along with Damien are looking at a wall full of
storyboards. Jack is just elated to be involved in this
process. Damien is all business.
-- Jack's final draft is printing, Jack sips from one last
cup of coffee. As he puts the cup down, it falls and the
liquid contents begins to spill on the freshly printed pages.
JACK HANNIGAN
Seven months, five re-writes and
more cups of coffee than one man
should consume later; I ... Jack
Hannigan, fresh out of film school
was preparing to direct my first
feature length movie. But, life was
about to throw me a curve ball...
EXT. CITY STREETS - DAY
Jack paces on the sidewalk, reading through several pages of
notes.
JACK HANNIGAN
Taxi!
As a Taxi Cab passes, Jack tries to hail it to no avail.
Having failed to get a ride, Jack continues down the
sidewalk, continuing to read through his notes. He doesn't
notice the female walking in his direction and isn't alerted
to her presence until it's to late. The pair collide...
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Sorry.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Excuse me.
They continue on their way for a brief moment, before turning
to face one another.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
Jack?
JACK HANNIGAN
Jo.
INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Jack and Jo laugh as they reminisce.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
It was as if we'd never been
apart...
The laughing and merriment begins to settle.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I heard about your movie. I was so
happy for you.
JACK HANNIGAN
Thank you.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack -- why didn't you call Or
write?
JACK HANNIGAN
I don't know. I kept wondering what
you were doing. Wondering if you'd
call. Ricky said you were probably
doing the same thing. I guess I was
scared you'd moved on.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
About two months after we came out
here, my folks split and my dad
moved away. Mom was always working
- you and all the guys were all I
ever thought about. I was waiting
for you to call. I was worried
everyone had forgotten about me.
Out of sight, out of mind, right?
Then when I heard about the movie,
I figured you'd been busy.
JACK HANNIGAN
It's been ... crazy. Who knew
making movies actually involved
work?
Joanne tries to smile, she fails.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I wouldn't know. Out here,
everyone's an actress.
Unfortunately there just aren't
that many roles.
JACK HANNIGAN
Jo, I have a movie full of roles.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I couldn't ask you to do that. I
wouldn't want people to assume I
got a role in a movie, just because
I'm friends with the writer.
JACK HANNIGAN
Director, actually.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
They're letting you direct it?!
JACK HANNIGAN
Benefit of being a producer's
prodigy. Plus, his production
company is financing the thing, so
he wants someone he can trust at
the "helm".
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You're terrified aren't you?
JACK HANNIGAN
I have a reoccurring dream where
I'm strangled to death with film
strip for blowing all of his money.
The pair laugh.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Seriously though, you should come
down and audition for a role. After
all -- I pretty much wrote it about
you.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I thought it was about some couple
on a plane trip.
JACK HANNIGAN
(With a smile)
It's a metaphor.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Then maybe I will.
A moment between the two as all their old feelings for one
another re-emerge.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
And she did, it turned out to be
just the break she needed...
INT. JOANNE GIOVANNI'S APARTMENT - DAY
A popular movie magazine slides across the table, Joanne is
on the cover. Her appearance in the magazine is promoting the
premiere of Jack's movie, which Jo is staring in.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (O.S)
Isn't this fantastic?
Joanne has a gleeful smile on her face. Jack has a similar
smile displayed on his face. Damien Williams is present. He
is equally pleased for them.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
I mean everything -- it's been like
a whirlwind. The movie, the film
festival --
JACK HANNIGAN
The ovation was nice.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
And now this? It's so wonderful.
Jack, I don't know how I can thank
you --
Jack approaches Jo, wrapping his arms round her. He pulls her
into a tight embrace.
JACK HANNIGAN
You don't have to. If anything I
should be thanking you.
She doesn't quite believe him, but she appreciates the kind
words nevertheless.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Don't forget about me.
JACK HANNIGAN
Forget Damien Williams? The man
that gave me a chance, brought me
to this city where I re-united with
the love of my life and let me
write and direct a movie?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
That's the one.
JACK HANNIGAN
Never.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
And don't you forget that.
They laugh. Damien retreats to the kitchen as Jack and Jo's
glance lingers on one another. Both lean in for a kiss --
before their lips can touch the door opens.
Katie, Ricky and Chris enter. Joanne shrieks with excitement.
She gives Katie such a forceful hug both girls nearly end up
on the floor.
RICKY
Where's my hug?
Jo gives Ricky a playful punch on the arm --
JOANNE GIOVANNI
That's for not making Jack call.
-- before pulling him into another hug.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
I am so glad you guys came.
CHRIS
Are you kidding? We wouldn't have
missed this for the world.
Damien re-emerges from the kitchen, champagne bottle in one
hand, several glasses precariously balanced between his
fingers in the other. He hands them to their guests.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
A Toast. To success. And a shit
load of money.
With a laugh, he pops the cork. There are smiling faces all
around. Jack and Jo clasp each others hand in their own,
they're on top of the world
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
I'm sure many people would consider
it the best decision she ever made.
What with the success, money and
loving boyfriend. Jo, would
probably disagree.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Jack and Jo sit on the sofa together, watching TV. A rare
break in their now hectic lives. They are watching an E!
Report, much like the one in the opening.
HOST
Celebrity couples. They're an
integral part of Hollywood, and
there may be none as popular right
now as Jack Hannigan and Joanne
Giovanni.
Several clips of the duo at movie premiers and just going
about their day is shown. As Jo and Jack watch from the sofa,
Jack appears amused by the whole thing.
HOST (CONT'D)
Having stared in all four of Jack
Hannigan's movies, a lot of fans
are chalking her success up to her
writer/director boyfriend...
Jo sits up. An angry upset look on her face.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Are they serious?
Jo looks to Jack for comfort.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
Is that what they think of me? Is
that what you think of me? That I'm
using you so I can be successful?
JACK HANNIGAN
Of course not. I love you, for you.
And it doesn't matter what they
say. I know you were in those
movies, because you're a great
actress and deserved to be in them.
They're just trying to create a
story. Now come, let's just try and
enjoy the rest of the evening...
Jack puts his arm around Jo however she brushes it away and
gets to her feet.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I don't feel like it anymore. I'm
gonna take off, I just wanna think
about things for a while.
Jo collects her bag and heads for the door, clearly upset by
the E! Report.
INT. CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
Jo closes the door to Jack's apartment. Clearly upset by the
media's insinuation about her career. She falls against the
wall in tears, taking one last glance at the door to Jack's
Apartment.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
Little did I know at the time, "I
just wanna think about things for a
while" really meant "It's over."
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - EVENING
Jack sits at a desk, the remaining light from the sunset
pouring in through the high arch windows in front of him. On
the desk is his laptop, he's working on his latest
screenplay.
The page is blank and the cursor blinks rhythmically. Jack
just stares at it blankly. The door opens with a click and
Jack's friend and assistant Ricky walks in. Jack does not
turn to look
RICKY
You should be going nuts man. The
only person you ever loved leaves
you because of what irrelevant
people think ... I mean how are you
not head butting the walls?
Jack continues looking at the computer screen blankly, he
doesn't even turn to face Ricky as he responds.
JACK HANNIGAN
I want to feel angry, I really do.
But I. I just feel empty.
Ricky places his hand comfortingly on Jack's shoulder. Jack
doesn't acknowledge the gesture and simply looks at his
reflection in the computer screen..
RICKY
Jack, if Joanne left you, then that
tells me this is her problem. Not
yours. She'll come around, and if
she doesn't, you're still you.
Nothing has changed.
JACK HANNIGAN
But it has. Without her, I've lost
my mojo. My muse --
Jack finally turns to Ricky.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Without her -- I'm not me anymore.
Jack gets up from his desk chair and leaves the room. Ricky
looks at his feet having failed cheering up his friend. He
instead takes Jack's chair and sighs.
INT. CITY STREETS - DAY
Jack is walking down the street, he clearly hasn't shaved for
several days and is looking a little worse for wear.
As he staggers past tourists and the like, he passes a bill
board advertising Joanne's newest movie. The whole street is
plastered with them, Jack looks at them, both hurt and angry.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
She was always very proud. She
wanted to make it on her own. No
matter how hard I tried to convince
her, she wouldn't believe that she
made it on her own talent. Not
because she was dating a director.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Jack arrives home, with a beer bottle in hand. He collapses
on the sofa, not noticing Ricky watching from across the
room.
RICKY
Jack, you can't keep doing this to
yourself man. You have to sort
yourself out.
JACK HANNIGAN
Leave me alone.
RICKY
Jack, I work for you. As an
employee, I have to tell you Damien
is waiting for the latest draft of
your script. As a friend, I'm
telling you to get your shit
together and move on.
Jack hurls the bottle at Ricky.
JACK HANNIGAN
I said leave me alone.
RICKY
Fine. You don't want my help? Then
you won't get it.
Ricky leaves as Jack continues to lay face down on the sofa.
INT. DAMIEN WILLIAMS OFFICE - DAY
Jack is seated in front of Damien. He looks a the floor
disinterested in what Damien has to say.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Look Jack, I know you've been going
through some personal stuff. But
it's time to put that behind you.
Now, I know you might not be in he
best frame of mind to direct. Hell,
at this point I'm not sure I want
to put that responsibility on your
shoulders. That being said, this is
a solid script. And I'd rather get
moving with it sooner rather than
later. I attached you as a producer
so you can ease back into the game.
I think it'll be good for you.
Jack finally looks up.
JACK HANNIGAN
Are we done?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yeah.
Jack hastily exits,
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Ricky, I need to talk to you.
Ricky stays behind, closing the door behind Jack. Damien
rises from the chair behind his desk and approaches Ricky,
the script he was just talking about in hand.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Ricky, I know Jack didn't write
this.
RICKY
Don't be crazy. Of course he did.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Ricky, I've read enough of Jack's
stuff to know how he writes. This
isn't it.
RICKY
Fine, I wrote it. It was just
sitting their half finished. And he
was drinking himself half to death.
When Jo left, he said he lost his
mojo, his muse. The only other time
I've seen him like this was when
she moved. You gave him a kick in
the ass then, and look where he is
now. I just gave him another kick
in the ass. Something to focus
on...
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I didn't know you could write.
RICKY
Neither did I. Jack told me once,
that you said "When personal stuff
gets in the way of writing, you
write it down." Well his personal
stuff was getting in the way of me
doing what I do. So, I wrote it
down.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I'm glad you did. Maybe having
something else to concentrate on
will snap him out of this funk.
Ricky nods in agreement.
INT. STUDIO - DAY
Jack, GEMMA the Casting Director and Ricky, making notes in
the corner are auditioning actresses for the movie. Gemma
fidgets with a camera. Jack lazily picks up a sheet of paper,
he still seems disinterested in the process.
GEMMA
Who's next?
JACK HANNIGAN
Someone I've never heard of.
Audrinna something --
GEMMA
Oh she couldn't make it. They
brought in someone to replace her.
JACK HANNIGAN
Who -- ?
Jack gets his answer as Joanne steps through the door. Ricky
looks up from his notes, he sees Jo and Jack lock eyes. A
tension in the air.
GEMMA
Ok Miss --
JOANNE GIOVANNI
-- Giovanni. Joanne Giovanni.
GEMMA
Well Joanne, if you could just read
the ...
Gemma's voice trails off as Jack now tries to avoid Joanne's
glance. A mix of emotions overwhelming him.
JACK HANNIGAN
I can't be here --
Jack hurriedly gets to his feet and exits the room.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack --
Joanne runs after him, taking Gemma by surprise.
GEMMA
What's their problem?
RICKY
(Sarcastically)
Don't you watch T.V?
INT. STUDIO, CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
Joanne chases after Jack, she prevents him from leaving.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack?
JACK HANNIGAN
What are you doing here Jo?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I'm sorry. I was supposed to
audition tomorrow. Something else
came up, I rescheduled for today. I
had no idea you were gonna be here.
JACK HANNIGAN
Where else would I be Jo?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
-- I don't know. I mean, they said
you weren't directing. That you
were barely even functioning.
JACK HANNIGAN
And whose fault is that?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I'm sorry.
JACK HANNIGAN
Don't be. I don't need your
sympathy. Just go do your damn
audition. I'll go barely function
somewhere else.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack, this is your movie. I should
go --
JACK HANNIGAN
No -- you come first. Don't you Jo?
Jack angrily leaves.
INT. BAR - DAY
Jack is seated at the bar, We've come full circle and are
back were we started.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
So that's my story. My insecure
girlfriend leaves me because she
can't handle the media, mocking
her. Her career continues and
mine's all but over. I'm drinking
myself to death and alienating the
only people left in the world that
care about me. Oh yeah, I'm on top
of the world.
Jack looks at the T.V continues to play the E! Report on
Joanne Giovanni.
HOST
Giovanni's latest role will re
unite her with estranged boyfriend
Jack Hannigan. Although Hannigan
will not be directing the picture,
he once again scribed the
screenplay and has signed on to
produce. Is this a desperate ploy
by Giovanni or is there something
more to this development?
Jack scoffs as he rises to his feet.
JACK HANNIGAN
Hey, bartender! One for the road.
Jack puts his money down on the bar and Jack is handed a
bottle of beer in return. He nods his thanks to the bartender
before making his way to the door.
EXT. OUTSIDE BAR - NIGHT
Jack exits the bar, sipping from the bottle of beer as he
does. He stands in the rain for a moment, staring at the
posters with Joanne. In a fit of fury, he hurls the bottle at
the poster, the glass shattering on impact.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Jack sits in darkness, light pouring on him from his
widescreen T.V. Strewn across the floor and coffee table are
DVD's of his previous movies. He watches as Joanne appears,
continuing to drink heavily.
After a BEAT, an urgent knocking comes from the door. With a
groan Jack gets up to answer.
As he pulls it open, he sees Joanne standing in the doorway.
Jack immediately slams the door in her face. He begins to
walk away, he stops. With a sigh Jack re-opens the door.
Joanne enters. Her eyes misty and red. She has clearly been
crying.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack -- I ...
Jack can't bear to see Jo like this and draws her into a warm
hug.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - LATER
Jack and Joanne stand off from one another.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I don't know why I watch those
things. What they said about me...
JACK HANNIGAN
I heard. I laughed.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack, what I did. It wasn't because
I didn't care. I just had to prove
to myself that I could make it on
my own.
JACK HANNIGAN
And then what? Once you'd proved it
to yourself and the world, you'd
just come back.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
No. I'd hoped you'd understand.
JACK HANNIGAN
How could I understand? It's
madness. I loved you, I cared. And
I know how talented you are. I knew
you didn't get to where you are
because you were sleeping with a
damn director. That should have
been enough.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I know. I'd just worked so hard,
for so long. I didn't want anyone
to think I hadn't earned what I
had.
JACK HANNIGAN
So you gave up every thing and
everyone, that really mattered. How
selfish are you?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I had to do this, for me. I love
you, and walking away was hard.
Staying away was even harder. I
knew what you were going through.
Ricky called, Katie called, even
Chris called. Telling me how much
pain you were in, what you were
doing to yourself. I wanted to be
there, to make it better. But I
couldn't -- and if that makes me
selfish. Then call me selfish.
JACK HANNIGAN
I just did.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
It wasn't easy for me. But how
would you feel, if people pinned
everything you'd ever worked for,
on who you were sleeping with?
Jack thinks for a moment --
JACK HANNIGAN
I -- I understand.
Joanne falls back onto the sofa, exhausted by the arguing.
Jack joins her. The pair sit quietly together as the movie
continues to play in the background.
They watch it, seemingly having reconciled.
MONTAGE
-- Jack is on the set of the movie. He has a laptop balanced
on his knees, he struggles to write as he works on a revision
of the screenplay. Jo walks by, smiling briefly at him. As if
by magic, Jack is struck with inspiration.
-- Jack and Jo are at Jack's apartment. They continue to
bond, re-building fences in their strained relationship.
-- Jack watches Joanne act, as the Director yells cut. Joanne
breaks character and looks warmly towards Jack.
-- Jack and Jo watch a movie together late at night. As Jo
grows tired, she rests her head on Jack's chest. Almost
reluctantly he puts his arm around her.
INT. MOVIE THEATRE - NIGHT
Joanne and Damien socialize with people, promoting the
release of the movie. Katie and Chris, who are in attendance
watch on.
KATIE
Jack looks better, don't you think?
CHRIS
Yeah.
KATIE
Is he writing again?
CHRIS
I don't know. Ricky said he's still
having a hard time coming up with a
story.
KATIE
Well, that'll change when he and
Joe get back together.
CHRIS
You think they will?
KATIE
I hope so.
Chris puts his arm around Katie. The pair are happy together
despite their respective friends recent troubles. Katie and
Chris's speculation seems to be put to rest when Jack enters
with a date.
Joanne seems visibly hurt by this. As Jack enters, Joanne
grabs him by the arm and drags him through a side door
leading to the roof.
EXT. MOVIE THEATRE, ROOFTOP - NIGHT
Joanne drags Jack through the door before finally releasing
his arm, he is clearly unhappy about the situation but is
more than willing to hear her out.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Why? Why bring someone, do you have
any idea how embarrassing that was
for me?
JACK HANNIGAN
You want me to come to a Movie
Premiere alone?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I thought we were working things
out.
JACK HANNIGAN
We are.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Well, you have a funny way of
showing it.
JACK HANNIGAN
I'm here aren't I? I stopped
drinking, I wrote. We're talking --
so what if I brought a date to the
premiere of my own movie.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Because --
JACK HANNIGAN
Because it makes you look bad.
Because it makes it look like you
came crawling back to me, because
you couldn't hack it on your own.
Because it makes it seem like I
wouldn't take you back. Is that it?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
No --
JACK HANNIGAN
You're so transparent.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
So, what? This was some revenge
scheme. To get back at me for
leaving?
JACK HANNIGAN
No. But maybe, I'm right. Maybe
that is why you came back. Because
you looked like a heartless bitch
when you left me. And every movie
you were in completely bombed. And
this your way of getting back on
top.
Joanne is upset by Jack's comments.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I came back, because I care about
you.
She tries to place her hand on his cheek but he rejects her
swatting the hand away.
JACK HANNIGAN
You left me, because you couldn't
deal with the way you were
portrayed in the media.
Who's to say you wouldn't get back
together with me to change that
perception? I mean, you drag me up
here to yell at me because I made
you look bad in front of the
paparazzi.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
(Defiantly)
Because I am not like that!
JACK HANNIGAN
I used to believe that.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You still can.
JACK HANNIGAN
No I can't. Even now, it's about
you. It is always about you. Even
when you weren't around, you
controlled my life. And I'm done.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I thought you understand.
JACK HANNIGAN
I do understand. I'm just choosing
not to care. I've spent to long,
miserable because of you. And I
don't need you, I just had to
realize that.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack --
JACK HANNIGAN
We're done Jo. Professionally,
personally. It's over.
Jack leaves Jo, stunned on the rooftop.
EXT. MOVIE THEATRE - NIGHT
Jack walks away from the movie theatre, stopping once to look
back at Jo on the rooftop. He withdraws his cell phone from
his jacket pocket and dials...
JACK HANNIGAN
Ricky, grab a pen. I have an idea
for a story. So this guy wants to
be a director, and casts his
actress girlfriend in a movie...
THE END
On a TV Screen is an E! Entertainment News broadcast.
HOST
Hello Entertainment fans, tonight
we report on actress Joanne
Giovanni. Giovanni is a multi-time
award winner and former girlfriend
of Director Jack Hannigan. Staring
in several of his movies.
Several pictures are of JACK HANNIGAN and JOANNE GIOVANNI are
shown.
HOST (CONT'D)
Following their much publicized
break up, Giovanni has gone out on
her own. However her success has
been limited with a string of flops
both critically and at the box
office. The question remains, is
Giovanni the next hot thing in
Hollywood? Or is this Hollywood
starlet already a thing of the
past?
The final graphic reads "Hot-Thing or Has-Been?" As a jaunty
tune comes from the Television, we pull away revealing a
somewhat dingy bar.
INT. BAR - NIGHT
The last place you'd expect such a show to be played in.
Across the street is a series of bill boards advertising a
movie with the actress (Giovanni) from the TV.
Sitting at a stool by the bar, is a man. His hair long an
unkempt. He stares out of the billboard before turning back
to the bar, hanging his head thoughtfully.
His face is revealed for the first time... he is the Director
from the TV report Jack Hannigan. He looks up at the TV which
is still reporting on Joanne.
JACK HANNIGAN
Can you turn that off?
The BARTENDER watches the TV as he absentmindedly "cleans" a
glass with a filthy rag.
BARTENDER
Sorry pal, no can do.
JACK HANNIGAN
Why is it on anyway? I've been
coming to this bar for years and
I've never seen a woman in here.
BARTENDER
What's that got to do with
anything?
JACK HANNIGAN
Well your customers aren't exactly
the type of people who watch E! Are
they?
Jack signals around the bar, displaying the patrons of the
bar for the Bartender. They consist of over weight slovenly
males, all of them seem to drunk to notice the TV's even on
let alone what's playing on it.
BARTENDER
Maybe I enjoy it. Do I have to be a
woman to enjoy E! Is that what
you're saying?
JACK HANNIGAN
Well you're not exactly their
target demographic are you?
BARTENDER
Well how about I stop serving you?
Will that make me their target
demographic?
JACK HANNIGAN
No, that would just make you a bad
bartender.
BARTENDER
Smart ass.
The Bartender walks away as Jack sighs.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O.)
I suppose you're wondering why a
hot shot director like myself;
would be sitting in a dingy bar,
drinking and arguing with an
overweight bartender. Well it's a
simply story really, cliched, but
simple. It's a story about a
girl...
Jack lifts his beer bottle and takes a long hard swig from
it...
MATCH CUT:
INT. CAFETERIA - DAY
A young Jack Hannigan drinks from a Pepsi Bottle. He places
it back down on the table. His friends, RICKY & CHRIS laugh
as they fail to wrap strands of spaghetti around their forks.
RICKY
Jack, why don't you show this moron
how it's done ... ?
Jack is oblivious to it, his eyes transfixed on a girl
sitting across the room, a young Joanne Giovanni.
RICKY (CONT'D)
Jack?
ANGLE ON: Joanne lifting her tray off her table and walking
towards the group of boys. As she passes, she waves at Jack.
He smiles back at her and Ricky realizes why Jack is so
distracted.
RICKY (CONT'D)
Man, how long have you been in love
with that girl?
CHRIS
Oh he's not in love with her, he
just appreciates her in an artistic
way. Isn't that right Jacky?
JACK HANNIGAN
What? Yeah. That's right.
RICKY
Artistic or not, you better get
those stars out of your eyes and
pull that jaw up off the floor.
JACK HANNIGAN
Do I have to?
RICKY
Yeah. After all, you've gotta
direct that scene with her later...
JACK HANNIGAN
When she reads the words on the
script, it's as if they were
written just for her...
CHRIS
They were written just for her. You
wrote them.
JACK HANNIGAN
Right...
CHRIS
You also wrote that little kiss
scene.
JACK HANNIGAN
So?
RICKY
I'm sure, watching the girl you've
been in love with for the last
three years, make out with some
dude over and over and over again
will be really fun for you.
JACK HANNIGAN
You think it's to late for a re
write?
CHRIS
I'm gonna say yes.
RICKY
Now come on love-struck, we've got
class.
Ricky and Chris pull Jack to his feet and the trip head for
the exit.
CHRIS
(To Jack)
Next time you write some kiss
scene, make sure I'm cast in it.
Preferably with Joanne's friend
Katie.
JACK HANNIGAN
I'll see what I can do.
INT. DRAMA ROOM - DAY
The lights are on bright, Jack stands extremely focused
behind a camera; watching the scene in front of him.
JACK HANNIGAN
Alright, cut.
In front of him is Joanne Giovanni and a well built male by
the name of TOM.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Tom, why don't you take a walk.
Maybe practice kissing yourself in
a mirror or something.
TOM
You saying there's something wrong
with the way I kiss?
JACK HANNIGAN
Well, let's put it this way.
Slobbering over someone like a dog,
doesn't look great on camera.
TOM
(Advancing at Jack)
I should jam that camera down your
damn throat...
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You know what Tom. Maybe you should
take a walk. To calm down.
TOM
(Relenting)
Fine, but because you asked. Not
because he wants me to.
Tom reluctantly leaves.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You didn't have to be so rude.
JACK HANNIGAN
He was screwing up my scene.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Your scene? Oh I didn't know it was
your scene. Well I'm very sorry we
weren't up to scratch.
JACK HANNIGAN
No, you were fantastic. You're
always fantastic.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Well that's very sweet.
Joanne approaches Jack.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
About this kiss. Which way should I
lean? I want to get my good side.
JACK HANNIGAN
It doesn't matter. You don't have a
bad side.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
So, did you get these lines out of
a book or did you just think of
them all by yourself?
JACK HANNIGAN
Little of both.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Why don't you show me what you want
from this kiss?
JACK HANNIGAN
Is that an invitation?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Maybe.
JACK HANNIGAN
I prefer written invitations,
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack, a girl could go crazy waiting
for you to make a move. Now, shut
up and kiss me.
Joanne leans forward and kisses Jack.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
And the rest as they say, is
history...
MONTAGE
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
We spent the whole summer together.
We were happy --
-- Jack and Jo continue to work together, Jack directing, Jo
acting. They steal the occasionally glance, smiling
affectionately as they do.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O) (CONT'D)
We did everything together, No
matter how big or small --
-- Joanne helps Jack paint his room. Jack dabs his paint
brush on Jo's nose. It soon breaks down into an all out paint
fight between them.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O) (CONT'D)
And our friends were usually along
for the ride.
-- Pull back to reveal Ricky, Chris and Jo's friend KATIE
helping out with the painting. They join the paint war going
on, undoing all the work they have done thus far.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
And then, with three simple words --
it was over.
INT. FIELD - EVENING
Jack, Joanne along with Chris, Katie and Ricky are sitting in
a field, watching the sunset. Chris inches his hand towards
Katie's, she rolls her eyes and takes his hand in hers; much
to his satisfaction. He has a big grin on his face.
Jack, lies with his arm around Joanne. She sits up, a serious
expression on her face.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack -- I'm moving.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
In case you were wondering; that
was it.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Jack sits at his desk, he types furiously on the keyboard of
his computer. Finally he stops, looks frustrated and sighs.
He deletes all of his work without a second thought before
getting to his feet.
Jack collapses on the bed, staring at the phone across the
room.
Ricky enters and takes a seat, thumbing through various
nearby magazines. He doesn't even have to look at Jack to
know what Jack's doing.
RICKY
If you want to talk to her so bad,
just pick up the phone and call
her.
JACK HANNIGAN
I can't just call her. It's been
three months since she moved. She's
probably settled in and has new
friends and everything.
RICKY
Yeah, probably has a new boyfriend
too.
JACK HANNIGAN
What have you heard?
RICKY
Jack, I was joking.
Ricky lowers the magazine.
RICKY (CONT'D)
Jack, you have to get over her man.
JACK HANNIGAN
I can't. We were perfect together.
RICKY
Sickening is the word you're
looking for.
JACK HANNIGAN
We were meant to be together, you
know? I have that feeling.
RICKY
When you two were together, I had a
feeling too. Nausea.
JACK HANNIGAN
Very funny.
Jack continues to stare at the phone.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
It's just, I can't focus on
anything without her. When I wrote,
it was about her. When I directed,
it was easy cause she was there.
I'm --
RICKY
(Mocking Jack)
-- Nothing without her. She
completes me. She makes my world go
round. Without her in my life, I'm
just a beach without an ocean. Do
you have any idea how many times
I've heard this?
JACK HANNIGAN
A lot?
RICKY
More than somewhat. It ends now.
Now get ready, we have a screen
writing seminar to go to.
JACK HANNIGAN
Do I have to go?
RICKY
Yes.
JACK HANNIGAN
Can't I just stare at the phone
some more?
RICKY
Not if you want to retain the small
amount of pride you have left.
JACK HANNIGAN
Fine, I'll go. On one condition?
RICKY
What is it?
JACK HANNIGAN
You'll call Jo for me, and ask if
she's seeing someone else.
Ricky groans and heads for the door.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Ok, you don't have to call. I'll
come.
EXT. AUDITORIUM - NIGHT
Jack and Ricky arrive, meeting Chris and Katie who have
clearly become a couple, as they do.
KATIE
Hey Jack. I'm glad you came.
JACK HANNIGAN
Thanks.
CHRIS
So, does anyone actually know who
this guy is?
Chris points to the poster, advertising the guest speaker at
this Screen-Writing Seminar. Ricky shrugs, unaware of whom
the man featured on the poster is.
JACK HANNIGAN
He's written a bunch of stuff.
Mainly obscure independent movies
in the early nineties. Mostly
comedies. I hear he has his own
production company now.
KATIE
How do you know that?
JACK HANNIGAN
I watch a lot of obscure,
independent comedies from the early
nineties.
She laughs. Ricky shudders.
RICKY
It's freezing out here. You guys
wanna head inside?
INT. AUDITORIUM - NIGHT
Jack, Ricky, Katie and Chris are seated together. There is a
hustle and bustle around the auditorium. It ceases as the
lights go down.
A spotlight is focused centre stage as the main speaker,
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (the writer featured on the posters outside)
approaches the podium.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
This is where it all began. I was
lost without Jo, it was Damien
Williams who found me. Plucked me
out of obscurity and gave me the
kick in the ass I needed. He did
this, with one simple challenge...
Damien clears his throat. And pushes a button on a remote in
his hand. On the screen behind him, a slide showing Damien's
phone number and E-mail address is shown.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You don't have to be a great writer
to write a great story. It takes
patience, practice, dedication and
hard work.
ANGLE ON: The group, sitting in the audience. Ricky leans
over to Chris.
RICKY
(Whispered)
What a hack.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
A lot of the students I meet and
talk to at these seminars seem to
think they're great writers. And
that everything they write, is a
licence to print money if only they
could get it into the right hands.
Damien glances over his shoulder at the screen displaying his
contact details.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Meet the right hands. You never
have to worry about contacts again.
I know directors, I know producers.
Up there are my details, I suggest
you write them down. Right here and
now, I challenge any one of you to
write a great script. When you're
done, you send it to me. And I
promise I won't over look it.
Damien steps back from the podium. He pauses, leans forward
towards the microphone...
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Thank you very much.
Damien leaves the stage. There's a murmur of disbelief going
around the auditorium. The lights slowly, almost hesitantly
return.
RICKY
That was it?
CHRIS
I think so.
KATIE
At least we didn't have to pay.
RICKY
Speak for yourself. We can't all be
the offspring of Auditorium owners.
I had to buy two tickets. One for
myself, and one for mopey over
there.
Ricky gestures towards Jack. Jack looks ahead, enthralled at
what he has just heard. His face twitches into a smile.
EXT. AUDITORIUM, BACK ENTRANCE - NIGHT
As Damien Williams exits the Auditorium from the rear
entrance. Jack is waiting nearby to greet him.
JACK HANNIGAN
Mr. Williams?
Damien is taken aback to find someone waiting for him.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yeah?
JACK HANNIGAN
I was at the seminar -- well it
wasn't much of a seminar but --
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I suppose this has a point?
JACK HANNIGAN
Yeah, actually. I'd like to take
you up on your offer. I don't know
if I'm a great writer or even an
average one. I don't know if I can
write a great script. But I'm
dedicated to what I do - I was
dedicated --
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
What changed?
JACK HANNIGAN
Personal stuff. Guess it got in the
way.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You know what I do, when personal
stuff gets in the way of writing? I
write about it.
JACK HANNIGAN
(With a laugh)
Makes sense I guess. This is what
I've wanted to do all my life.
Write movies. I don't know if I can
write a great screenplay. But I'm
gonna try.
Damien laughs to himself.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You know, I've been doing this for
five years --
JACK HANNIGAN
Someone has been paying you to do
that for five years?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Shocking I know. But nevertheless.
Nobody has ever taken me up on my
challenge. Until now.
Congratulations --
JACK HANNIGAN
-- Jack, Jack Hannigan.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I hope to hear from you Jack.
JACK HANNIGAN
You will.
Damien nods, unlocks his car and prepares to enter.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
And Mr. Williams -- Damien pauses.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
That film you wrote, with the
monkey that solved crime. That was
a terrible movie --
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yes it was.
With a smile, Damien enters his car and drives away. Jack
smiles, having made some progress getting over Jo and with
his career.
INT. DAMIEN WILLIAMS OFFICE - DAY
Damien sits at the desk, his head down as he reads a script
in front of him.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
It took less than four months for
Damien Williams to hear from me.
Damien finally looks up from the script, Jack is sitting
patiently in front of him.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You know, this isn't bad.
JACK HANNIGAN
You sound surprised.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I am surprised. When you said you
were gonna take me up on my
challenge, I didn't think I'd ever
hear from you again. But here you
are...
JACK HANNIGAN
And with a script.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
A good script. How did you come up
with this?
JACK HANNIGAN
I don't know. So you like the idea?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yeah. Two people fall in love on a
plane trip to Australia. I like all
the little parts of the
relationship you manage to include,
like meeting the parents. All on
one plane ride. It's good stuff.
JACK HANNIGAN
Thanks.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
You said you didn't know if you
could write a great screenplay. Now
we know you can.
JACK HANNIGAN
Now we know?
With a smile and a laugh Damien replies.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Now we know.
Jack's face lights up.
MONTAGE
-- Jack furiously types away at his keyboard, typing with his
left hand, lifting a coffee cup (one of many) and drinking
deeply from it.
-- Jack is handed several pages of notes on his latest draft
of the script. He reads one page, then the next, then the
third ... each page brings a slightly more disheartening
expression to his face.
-- Jack, along with Damien are looking at a wall full of
storyboards. Jack is just elated to be involved in this
process. Damien is all business.
-- Jack's final draft is printing, Jack sips from one last
cup of coffee. As he puts the cup down, it falls and the
liquid contents begins to spill on the freshly printed pages.
JACK HANNIGAN
Seven months, five re-writes and
more cups of coffee than one man
should consume later; I ... Jack
Hannigan, fresh out of film school
was preparing to direct my first
feature length movie. But, life was
about to throw me a curve ball...
EXT. CITY STREETS - DAY
Jack paces on the sidewalk, reading through several pages of
notes.
JACK HANNIGAN
Taxi!
As a Taxi Cab passes, Jack tries to hail it to no avail.
Having failed to get a ride, Jack continues down the
sidewalk, continuing to read through his notes. He doesn't
notice the female walking in his direction and isn't alerted
to her presence until it's to late. The pair collide...
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Sorry.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Excuse me.
They continue on their way for a brief moment, before turning
to face one another.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
Jack?
JACK HANNIGAN
Jo.
INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Jack and Jo laugh as they reminisce.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
It was as if we'd never been
apart...
The laughing and merriment begins to settle.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I heard about your movie. I was so
happy for you.
JACK HANNIGAN
Thank you.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack -- why didn't you call Or
write?
JACK HANNIGAN
I don't know. I kept wondering what
you were doing. Wondering if you'd
call. Ricky said you were probably
doing the same thing. I guess I was
scared you'd moved on.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
About two months after we came out
here, my folks split and my dad
moved away. Mom was always working
- you and all the guys were all I
ever thought about. I was waiting
for you to call. I was worried
everyone had forgotten about me.
Out of sight, out of mind, right?
Then when I heard about the movie,
I figured you'd been busy.
JACK HANNIGAN
It's been ... crazy. Who knew
making movies actually involved
work?
Joanne tries to smile, she fails.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I wouldn't know. Out here,
everyone's an actress.
Unfortunately there just aren't
that many roles.
JACK HANNIGAN
Jo, I have a movie full of roles.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I couldn't ask you to do that. I
wouldn't want people to assume I
got a role in a movie, just because
I'm friends with the writer.
JACK HANNIGAN
Director, actually.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
They're letting you direct it?!
JACK HANNIGAN
Benefit of being a producer's
prodigy. Plus, his production
company is financing the thing, so
he wants someone he can trust at
the "helm".
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You're terrified aren't you?
JACK HANNIGAN
I have a reoccurring dream where
I'm strangled to death with film
strip for blowing all of his money.
The pair laugh.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Seriously though, you should come
down and audition for a role. After
all -- I pretty much wrote it about
you.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I thought it was about some couple
on a plane trip.
JACK HANNIGAN
(With a smile)
It's a metaphor.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Then maybe I will.
A moment between the two as all their old feelings for one
another re-emerge.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
And she did, it turned out to be
just the break she needed...
INT. JOANNE GIOVANNI'S APARTMENT - DAY
A popular movie magazine slides across the table, Joanne is
on the cover. Her appearance in the magazine is promoting the
premiere of Jack's movie, which Jo is staring in.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (O.S)
Isn't this fantastic?
Joanne has a gleeful smile on her face. Jack has a similar
smile displayed on his face. Damien Williams is present. He
is equally pleased for them.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
I mean everything -- it's been like
a whirlwind. The movie, the film
festival --
JACK HANNIGAN
The ovation was nice.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
And now this? It's so wonderful.
Jack, I don't know how I can thank
you --
Jack approaches Jo, wrapping his arms round her. He pulls her
into a tight embrace.
JACK HANNIGAN
You don't have to. If anything I
should be thanking you.
She doesn't quite believe him, but she appreciates the kind
words nevertheless.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Don't forget about me.
JACK HANNIGAN
Forget Damien Williams? The man
that gave me a chance, brought me
to this city where I re-united with
the love of my life and let me
write and direct a movie?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
That's the one.
JACK HANNIGAN
Never.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
And don't you forget that.
They laugh. Damien retreats to the kitchen as Jack and Jo's
glance lingers on one another. Both lean in for a kiss --
before their lips can touch the door opens.
Katie, Ricky and Chris enter. Joanne shrieks with excitement.
She gives Katie such a forceful hug both girls nearly end up
on the floor.
RICKY
Where's my hug?
Jo gives Ricky a playful punch on the arm --
JOANNE GIOVANNI
That's for not making Jack call.
-- before pulling him into another hug.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
I am so glad you guys came.
CHRIS
Are you kidding? We wouldn't have
missed this for the world.
Damien re-emerges from the kitchen, champagne bottle in one
hand, several glasses precariously balanced between his
fingers in the other. He hands them to their guests.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
A Toast. To success. And a shit
load of money.
With a laugh, he pops the cork. There are smiling faces all
around. Jack and Jo clasp each others hand in their own,
they're on top of the world
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
I'm sure many people would consider
it the best decision she ever made.
What with the success, money and
loving boyfriend. Jo, would
probably disagree.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Jack and Jo sit on the sofa together, watching TV. A rare
break in their now hectic lives. They are watching an E!
Report, much like the one in the opening.
HOST
Celebrity couples. They're an
integral part of Hollywood, and
there may be none as popular right
now as Jack Hannigan and Joanne
Giovanni.
Several clips of the duo at movie premiers and just going
about their day is shown. As Jo and Jack watch from the sofa,
Jack appears amused by the whole thing.
HOST (CONT'D)
Having stared in all four of Jack
Hannigan's movies, a lot of fans
are chalking her success up to her
writer/director boyfriend...
Jo sits up. An angry upset look on her face.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Are they serious?
Jo looks to Jack for comfort.
JOANNE GIOVANNI (CONT'D)
Is that what they think of me? Is
that what you think of me? That I'm
using you so I can be successful?
JACK HANNIGAN
Of course not. I love you, for you.
And it doesn't matter what they
say. I know you were in those
movies, because you're a great
actress and deserved to be in them.
They're just trying to create a
story. Now come, let's just try and
enjoy the rest of the evening...
Jack puts his arm around Jo however she brushes it away and
gets to her feet.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I don't feel like it anymore. I'm
gonna take off, I just wanna think
about things for a while.
Jo collects her bag and heads for the door, clearly upset by
the E! Report.
INT. CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
Jo closes the door to Jack's apartment. Clearly upset by the
media's insinuation about her career. She falls against the
wall in tears, taking one last glance at the door to Jack's
Apartment.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
Little did I know at the time, "I
just wanna think about things for a
while" really meant "It's over."
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - EVENING
Jack sits at a desk, the remaining light from the sunset
pouring in through the high arch windows in front of him. On
the desk is his laptop, he's working on his latest
screenplay.
The page is blank and the cursor blinks rhythmically. Jack
just stares at it blankly. The door opens with a click and
Jack's friend and assistant Ricky walks in. Jack does not
turn to look
RICKY
You should be going nuts man. The
only person you ever loved leaves
you because of what irrelevant
people think ... I mean how are you
not head butting the walls?
Jack continues looking at the computer screen blankly, he
doesn't even turn to face Ricky as he responds.
JACK HANNIGAN
I want to feel angry, I really do.
But I. I just feel empty.
Ricky places his hand comfortingly on Jack's shoulder. Jack
doesn't acknowledge the gesture and simply looks at his
reflection in the computer screen..
RICKY
Jack, if Joanne left you, then that
tells me this is her problem. Not
yours. She'll come around, and if
she doesn't, you're still you.
Nothing has changed.
JACK HANNIGAN
But it has. Without her, I've lost
my mojo. My muse --
Jack finally turns to Ricky.
JACK HANNIGAN (CONT'D)
Without her -- I'm not me anymore.
Jack gets up from his desk chair and leaves the room. Ricky
looks at his feet having failed cheering up his friend. He
instead takes Jack's chair and sighs.
INT. CITY STREETS - DAY
Jack is walking down the street, he clearly hasn't shaved for
several days and is looking a little worse for wear.
As he staggers past tourists and the like, he passes a bill
board advertising Joanne's newest movie. The whole street is
plastered with them, Jack looks at them, both hurt and angry.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
She was always very proud. She
wanted to make it on her own. No
matter how hard I tried to convince
her, she wouldn't believe that she
made it on her own talent. Not
because she was dating a director.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Jack arrives home, with a beer bottle in hand. He collapses
on the sofa, not noticing Ricky watching from across the
room.
RICKY
Jack, you can't keep doing this to
yourself man. You have to sort
yourself out.
JACK HANNIGAN
Leave me alone.
RICKY
Jack, I work for you. As an
employee, I have to tell you Damien
is waiting for the latest draft of
your script. As a friend, I'm
telling you to get your shit
together and move on.
Jack hurls the bottle at Ricky.
JACK HANNIGAN
I said leave me alone.
RICKY
Fine. You don't want my help? Then
you won't get it.
Ricky leaves as Jack continues to lay face down on the sofa.
INT. DAMIEN WILLIAMS OFFICE - DAY
Jack is seated in front of Damien. He looks a the floor
disinterested in what Damien has to say.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Look Jack, I know you've been going
through some personal stuff. But
it's time to put that behind you.
Now, I know you might not be in he
best frame of mind to direct. Hell,
at this point I'm not sure I want
to put that responsibility on your
shoulders. That being said, this is
a solid script. And I'd rather get
moving with it sooner rather than
later. I attached you as a producer
so you can ease back into the game.
I think it'll be good for you.
Jack finally looks up.
JACK HANNIGAN
Are we done?
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Yeah.
Jack hastily exits,
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Ricky, I need to talk to you.
Ricky stays behind, closing the door behind Jack. Damien
rises from the chair behind his desk and approaches Ricky,
the script he was just talking about in hand.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Ricky, I know Jack didn't write
this.
RICKY
Don't be crazy. Of course he did.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
Ricky, I've read enough of Jack's
stuff to know how he writes. This
isn't it.
RICKY
Fine, I wrote it. It was just
sitting their half finished. And he
was drinking himself half to death.
When Jo left, he said he lost his
mojo, his muse. The only other time
I've seen him like this was when
she moved. You gave him a kick in
the ass then, and look where he is
now. I just gave him another kick
in the ass. Something to focus
on...
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I didn't know you could write.
RICKY
Neither did I. Jack told me once,
that you said "When personal stuff
gets in the way of writing, you
write it down." Well his personal
stuff was getting in the way of me
doing what I do. So, I wrote it
down.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
I'm glad you did. Maybe having
something else to concentrate on
will snap him out of this funk.
Ricky nods in agreement.
INT. STUDIO - DAY
Jack, GEMMA the Casting Director and Ricky, making notes in
the corner are auditioning actresses for the movie. Gemma
fidgets with a camera. Jack lazily picks up a sheet of paper,
he still seems disinterested in the process.
GEMMA
Who's next?
JACK HANNIGAN
Someone I've never heard of.
Audrinna something --
GEMMA
Oh she couldn't make it. They
brought in someone to replace her.
JACK HANNIGAN
Who -- ?
Jack gets his answer as Joanne steps through the door. Ricky
looks up from his notes, he sees Jo and Jack lock eyes. A
tension in the air.
GEMMA
Ok Miss --
JOANNE GIOVANNI
-- Giovanni. Joanne Giovanni.
GEMMA
Well Joanne, if you could just read
the ...
Gemma's voice trails off as Jack now tries to avoid Joanne's
glance. A mix of emotions overwhelming him.
JACK HANNIGAN
I can't be here --
Jack hurriedly gets to his feet and exits the room.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack --
Joanne runs after him, taking Gemma by surprise.
GEMMA
What's their problem?
RICKY
(Sarcastically)
Don't you watch T.V?
INT. STUDIO, CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
Joanne chases after Jack, she prevents him from leaving.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack?
JACK HANNIGAN
What are you doing here Jo?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I'm sorry. I was supposed to
audition tomorrow. Something else
came up, I rescheduled for today. I
had no idea you were gonna be here.
JACK HANNIGAN
Where else would I be Jo?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
-- I don't know. I mean, they said
you weren't directing. That you
were barely even functioning.
JACK HANNIGAN
And whose fault is that?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I'm sorry.
JACK HANNIGAN
Don't be. I don't need your
sympathy. Just go do your damn
audition. I'll go barely function
somewhere else.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack, this is your movie. I should
go --
JACK HANNIGAN
No -- you come first. Don't you Jo?
Jack angrily leaves.
INT. BAR - DAY
Jack is seated at the bar, We've come full circle and are
back were we started.
JACK HANNIGAN (V.O)
So that's my story. My insecure
girlfriend leaves me because she
can't handle the media, mocking
her. Her career continues and
mine's all but over. I'm drinking
myself to death and alienating the
only people left in the world that
care about me. Oh yeah, I'm on top
of the world.
Jack looks at the T.V continues to play the E! Report on
Joanne Giovanni.
HOST
Giovanni's latest role will re
unite her with estranged boyfriend
Jack Hannigan. Although Hannigan
will not be directing the picture,
he once again scribed the
screenplay and has signed on to
produce. Is this a desperate ploy
by Giovanni or is there something
more to this development?
Jack scoffs as he rises to his feet.
JACK HANNIGAN
Hey, bartender! One for the road.
Jack puts his money down on the bar and Jack is handed a
bottle of beer in return. He nods his thanks to the bartender
before making his way to the door.
EXT. OUTSIDE BAR - NIGHT
Jack exits the bar, sipping from the bottle of beer as he
does. He stands in the rain for a moment, staring at the
posters with Joanne. In a fit of fury, he hurls the bottle at
the poster, the glass shattering on impact.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Jack sits in darkness, light pouring on him from his
widescreen T.V. Strewn across the floor and coffee table are
DVD's of his previous movies. He watches as Joanne appears,
continuing to drink heavily.
After a BEAT, an urgent knocking comes from the door. With a
groan Jack gets up to answer.
As he pulls it open, he sees Joanne standing in the doorway.
Jack immediately slams the door in her face. He begins to
walk away, he stops. With a sigh Jack re-opens the door.
Joanne enters. Her eyes misty and red. She has clearly been
crying.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack -- I ...
Jack can't bear to see Jo like this and draws her into a warm
hug.
INT. JACK HANNIGAN'S APARTMENT - LATER
Jack and Joanne stand off from one another.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I don't know why I watch those
things. What they said about me...
JACK HANNIGAN
I heard. I laughed.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack, what I did. It wasn't because
I didn't care. I just had to prove
to myself that I could make it on
my own.
JACK HANNIGAN
And then what? Once you'd proved it
to yourself and the world, you'd
just come back.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
No. I'd hoped you'd understand.
JACK HANNIGAN
How could I understand? It's
madness. I loved you, I cared. And
I know how talented you are. I knew
you didn't get to where you are
because you were sleeping with a
damn director. That should have
been enough.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I know. I'd just worked so hard,
for so long. I didn't want anyone
to think I hadn't earned what I
had.
JACK HANNIGAN
So you gave up every thing and
everyone, that really mattered. How
selfish are you?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I had to do this, for me. I love
you, and walking away was hard.
Staying away was even harder. I
knew what you were going through.
Ricky called, Katie called, even
Chris called. Telling me how much
pain you were in, what you were
doing to yourself. I wanted to be
there, to make it better. But I
couldn't -- and if that makes me
selfish. Then call me selfish.
JACK HANNIGAN
I just did.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
It wasn't easy for me. But how
would you feel, if people pinned
everything you'd ever worked for,
on who you were sleeping with?
Jack thinks for a moment --
JACK HANNIGAN
I -- I understand.
Joanne falls back onto the sofa, exhausted by the arguing.
Jack joins her. The pair sit quietly together as the movie
continues to play in the background.
They watch it, seemingly having reconciled.
MONTAGE
-- Jack is on the set of the movie. He has a laptop balanced
on his knees, he struggles to write as he works on a revision
of the screenplay. Jo walks by, smiling briefly at him. As if
by magic, Jack is struck with inspiration.
-- Jack and Jo are at Jack's apartment. They continue to
bond, re-building fences in their strained relationship.
-- Jack watches Joanne act, as the Director yells cut. Joanne
breaks character and looks warmly towards Jack.
-- Jack and Jo watch a movie together late at night. As Jo
grows tired, she rests her head on Jack's chest. Almost
reluctantly he puts his arm around her.
INT. MOVIE THEATRE - NIGHT
Joanne and Damien socialize with people, promoting the
release of the movie. Katie and Chris, who are in attendance
watch on.
KATIE
Jack looks better, don't you think?
CHRIS
Yeah.
KATIE
Is he writing again?
CHRIS
I don't know. Ricky said he's still
having a hard time coming up with a
story.
KATIE
Well, that'll change when he and
Joe get back together.
CHRIS
You think they will?
KATIE
I hope so.
Chris puts his arm around Katie. The pair are happy together
despite their respective friends recent troubles. Katie and
Chris's speculation seems to be put to rest when Jack enters
with a date.
Joanne seems visibly hurt by this. As Jack enters, Joanne
grabs him by the arm and drags him through a side door
leading to the roof.
EXT. MOVIE THEATRE, ROOFTOP - NIGHT
Joanne drags Jack through the door before finally releasing
his arm, he is clearly unhappy about the situation but is
more than willing to hear her out.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Why? Why bring someone, do you have
any idea how embarrassing that was
for me?
JACK HANNIGAN
You want me to come to a Movie
Premiere alone?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I thought we were working things
out.
JACK HANNIGAN
We are.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Well, you have a funny way of
showing it.
JACK HANNIGAN
I'm here aren't I? I stopped
drinking, I wrote. We're talking --
so what if I brought a date to the
premiere of my own movie.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Because --
JACK HANNIGAN
Because it makes you look bad.
Because it makes it look like you
came crawling back to me, because
you couldn't hack it on your own.
Because it makes it seem like I
wouldn't take you back. Is that it?
JOANNE GIOVANNI
No --
JACK HANNIGAN
You're so transparent.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
So, what? This was some revenge
scheme. To get back at me for
leaving?
JACK HANNIGAN
No. But maybe, I'm right. Maybe
that is why you came back. Because
you looked like a heartless bitch
when you left me. And every movie
you were in completely bombed. And
this your way of getting back on
top.
Joanne is upset by Jack's comments.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I came back, because I care about
you.
She tries to place her hand on his cheek but he rejects her
swatting the hand away.
JACK HANNIGAN
You left me, because you couldn't
deal with the way you were
portrayed in the media.
Who's to say you wouldn't get back
together with me to change that
perception? I mean, you drag me up
here to yell at me because I made
you look bad in front of the
paparazzi.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
(Defiantly)
Because I am not like that!
JACK HANNIGAN
I used to believe that.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
You still can.
JACK HANNIGAN
No I can't. Even now, it's about
you. It is always about you. Even
when you weren't around, you
controlled my life. And I'm done.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
I thought you understand.
JACK HANNIGAN
I do understand. I'm just choosing
not to care. I've spent to long,
miserable because of you. And I
don't need you, I just had to
realize that.
JOANNE GIOVANNI
Jack --
JACK HANNIGAN
We're done Jo. Professionally,
personally. It's over.
Jack leaves Jo, stunned on the rooftop.
EXT. MOVIE THEATRE - NIGHT
Jack walks away from the movie theatre, stopping once to look
back at Jo on the rooftop. He withdraws his cell phone from
his jacket pocket and dials...
JACK HANNIGAN
Ricky, grab a pen. I have an idea
for a story. So this guy wants to
be a director, and casts his
actress girlfriend in a movie...
THE END
