Faces in the Hall
INT. ALBERTO'S ROOM - DAY Alberto is seen sitting in his room, sobbing. He looks out his window. ALBERTO God! Why me? Why?! Alberto's sister is sitting outside his room, looking in, scared to find out what Alberto is crying about. Alberto is rarely one to cry, so she knows something has to be up. INT. SCHOOL HALL - DAY The next day, Alberto is seen walking down the hall, books in his hand, his girlfriend, Maria, right beside him. They walk past the music room, where she is supposed to be next. They stop. ALBERTO Alright baby. I'll see you after school beside my car. MARIA Alright, I'll see you then. They kiss each other, and Alberto walks off. Maria just stands there, looking at him. She knows something's up, too. She just doesn't know what it is. She turns around and walks into the music room, letting the door shut behind her. EXT. SCHOOL TRACK - DAY It's the next day, the first day of the season for the school's track team. Alberto is seen sitting on the bleachers, away from a most of the other kids on the team. The coach is looking around, telling them the plans for this next season, and Ronnie Johnson, who plays football, too, looks back at Alberto. He shakes his head, and Alberto looks at him, confused. TRACK COACH Alright you guys. Stay out of trouble, because our first real practice is on Monday. ALBERTO So, we're done here then? TRACK COACH Yes Alberto. We're finished for today. I'll see you all on Monday. Alberto gets up and walks off, the first one out of the gate from the track. He turns around to see Ronnie Johnson right behind him. ALBERTO What in the hell do you want, Ronnie? I didn't do anything to you. RONNIE Yeah you did, Alberto. You were a fag. Fag. ALBERTO Whatever. Alberto turns around and walks away, and Ronnie grabs his arm. RONNIE Don't walk away from me, queer. Ronnie spits in Alberto's face, and then he runs off laughing, followed closely by all of his friends. They turn around, seeing Alberto wipe the spit off of his face and walk over to his car in the parking lot. INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT The family is sitting around the dinner table that night, eating. Alberto is sitting across from his sister, his mom on the right side of the table and his dad on the left. Everyone is talking, but Alberto is doing everything that he can to stay quiet. SISTER I'm not saying that Mom, all that I'm saying is that I need some more money to pay for books. It isn't needed, but it would help. Worst case scenario is that I have to buy them myself. MOM Well, if you can pay for them yourself then I don't think it's needed for us to give you the money. SISTER No, but I only figured that I'd have to dip into my savings if I really needed the money. DAD And I'd say that this is the situation where you really need your money. Alberto's sister laughs for a second, then stops, realizing that their father is serious about what he just said. She tries to find a way to change the topic, and sees Alberto, staring down at his plate quietly. SISTER Alberto, what's wrong? You've been moping around sadly and quietly for the past few days, and I want to know what your problem is. ALBERTO I'm alright sis. Don't worry about it. SISTER You aren't alright. I know better than that. What is wrong with you? ALBERTO Nothing is wrong! God! Why don't you guys get the damn point?! Alberto gets up from his chair and walks out to his bedroom, the rest of his family just looking on. EXT. TRACK - DAY About a week later, the first track meet of the season. Alberto is getting ready for the 4x100 relay that he's taking part in. He's upset though, because the other three are Ronnie and his friends. Alberto is stretching his legs for running and Ronnie walks up to him. RONNIE Alright you little pussy. You better not fuck us out of a win in this run. ALBERTO Don't worry. I got it taken care of. It will probably me that saves us from losing the race in the first place. RONNIE Don't get too cocky if you value your life. Alberto chuckles and walks over to where his family and his girlfriend, Maria, are seated. ALBERTO Alright girl. Watch me light this track up with my super speed! MARIA Sure thing baby. Just don't hurt yourself or anything running, because I wouldn't wanna see that. ALBERTO Don't worry. I've got myself covered. Even if I did get hurt... Pfft, it's only a sports injury. Nothing I couldn't handle. MARIA You sound so sure of yourself. ALBERTO That's only because I am so sure of myself. MARIA Well, I'm glad that one of us is. Good luck baby. ALBERTO Thanks. Alberto walks over to his point on the track, awaiting the race to start. When it starts, Ronnie is the one starting with the baton. He is the fastest one on the track, slowly pulling away from the other runners. He keeps running, handing the baton off to Alberto. Alberto then runs it off until he reaches the next guy. Alberto's school has a nice lead over the other guys, but it's starting to look slow for them, because the other two guys are slower than Alberto and Ronnie. RONNIE Hurry up you bastards. The fourth guy goes around the turn, giving the school the win over the others. Ronnie and Alberto both jump into the air, excited over the win. The win in the relay gave them the win in the entire meet. ALBERTO Yeah! Ronnie walks over to Alberto, who is headed for the locker room so he can get changed and leave. RONNIE I think I was wrong about you Alberto. You're alright. Man, my parents are gonna be away for the weekend, and I'm throwing a party. I was wondering if maybe you wanted to come. Gonna be lots and lots of Bicardi there man. So much that you would get so wasted and fucked up. It would be the night of your life. Stop by my house, I'll show you what I'm talking about. ALBERTO Alright. I'll be sure to do that. RONNIE Cool. Alberto goes into the locker room and Ronnie stops, looking at his friends. They are talking, but you can't really hear them. Ronnie then laughs for a second and nods his head. His friends all have smirks on their faces. EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY It's later that same day, and Maria is still waiting for Alberto to come out of the locker room. She is singing 'For Me This is Heaven' while listening to her iPod, making us presume that this is what she's listening to. Carrie Ann, Ronnie's girlfriend, hears her while talking to her friends. She gets jealous right away. CARRIE ANN I don't even know why that girl thinks she's good at anything. She's nothing but a little whore. You wanna see me fuck her life up? All of Carrie Ann's friends giggle a little bit, and Carrie Ann walks over to the front seat of her car. She pulls a bag of heroin from the glovebox. CARRIE ANN I bet you I can get her hooked on this shit, and to the party that Ronnie's having tomorrow night. Carrie Ann takes the bag and walks over to Maria. CARRIE ANN Hi Maria. MARIA Oh, hi. CARRIE ANN What are you doing out here alone? MARIA Waiting for Alberto to come out. God, he's taking so long with it. CARRIE ANN Speaking of Alberto, there are rumors going around about him being... MARIA Gay? Yeah, I heard them, believe me. I don't know what to think, because I've seen the way he behaves and waves, for some reason, it wouldn't surprise me. CARRIE ANN Yeah, well, to the reason I was over here. I heard your singing, and I think you're an amazing singer. I was wondering what you were doing this weekend. The two continue talking, and Maria takes out her Blackberry phone, putting something in as the camera pans out. INT. MARIA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT Later on that same night, Maria is seen in her room. She pulls out a bag of heroin and looks at it. The scene cuts to outside of her room, where her little brother is knocking on the door. LITTLE BROTHER Maria! I'm hungry! MARIA Then go get something! LITTLE BROTHER But there is nothing! MARIA Jesus! She walks out of the room, her eyes bloodshot. She is sniffling and wiping her nose, but it isn't running. She walks into the kitchen, grabs a box of macaroni and cheese and starts getting it ready for cooking. LITTLE BROTHER When is mom gonna get home? MARIA I don't know. When are you gonna shut up? LITTLE BROTHER What's wrong with you? MARIA Nothing, you stupid brat. Why does something always have to be wrong with me? INT. RONNIE'S HOUSE - NIGHT Ronnie and his friends are already getting ready for the drinking, and he hears a knock on the door. RONNIE Alright guys, you gotta stay quiet about this so he doesn't know something's up. This plan worked out great so far, so I don't want any of you fucking it up. Ronnie walks out to the door and Alberto is seen standing there. Ronnie gets out of the doorway. RONNIE Come in, come in. Alberto follows Ronnie into the main room where the kids are all standing. RONNIE Everyone, I used to think Alberto was a fag, and a little bitch, but I have since changed my mind. He was the key in the track meet a few days back which kept our undefeated streak going. Ronnie continues talking about this, and two of his friends are walking up right behind Alberto. One of them grabs the fireplace poker that Ronnie's parents have. He hits Alberto in the back of the head with it. RONNIE Good shot. He's down, now let's kick the shit out of the little queerbate. They all start kicking him while he's down, and Ronnie takes a few steps back. One of his friends holds Alberto's head about a foot in the air, then Ronnie runs forward, kicking him in the face, breaking his nose and getting blood all over. RONNIE Shit! I really got a hold of him on that one, and now that little fag got blood all over my parents' carpet. I guess I gotta kick his ass for that now, too. Ronnie kicks Alberto in the face again, and once again, Alberto is surrounded by kids kicking and punching him. They all back away, and he is laying flat, unmoving. RONNIE Holy shit. He's not moving. Oh my God. One of Ronnie's friends bends down, checking Alberto's throat for a pulse. FRIEND Ronnie... He's kind of... Sorta dead. RONNIE Shit. We have to find a way to make it look like we didn't do it. FRIEND That's gonna be kind of hard, seeing as how we got blood all over the fucking house. Carrie Ann knocks on the door and walks into the room. She sees Alberto's dead body laying on the ground, then she looks over at Ronnie, horrified by what she's seeing. RONNIE Yeah... We killed him. CARRIE ANN Yeah, uh, get the body out of here. I didn't know you were going to kill him! RONNIE We didn't know that either! We only thought that we were going to make his life miserable, and kick the shit out of him tonight. CARRIE ANN I got that stupid whore taken care of too, so she's addicted. RONNIE So both of our jobs are done then. That's good. CARRIE ANN (staring at the body) One of our jobs is just a little too done, don't you think? They all look down at Alberto's body, scared of what the consequences might be when people find out that they did this. They continue looking on as the scene shows a montage of Alberto getting picked on and beat up and Maria doing all kinds of drugs, but mainly heroin. INT. FUNERAL HOME - DAY It's about a week later at Alberto's funeral. Everyone is there, even Ronnie and Carrie Ann. Maria is crying the hardest, standing with Alberto's family. Carrie Ann walks over to Maria and stands next to her. CARRIE ANN Looks Maria, I know you're going through a tough time, and I just wanted to tell you that I'm there for you. MARIA Get the fuck away from me. I don't want to talk to you or your friends. CARRIE ANN Damn, just trying to be nice is all, so sue me. Carrie Ann walks back over to where Ronnie and their friends are standing around, talking. RONNIE Hey, we're going out, so here are my keys, I'll see you later tonight. CARRIE ANN Alright, bye. The funeral ends, and Ronnie and his friends all leave the building. Everyone else stands in the home, looking at the body in the casket, and the scene fades to black, cuing the credits to roll.
THE END
