ELEANOR RIGBY
FADE IN:
INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT
An unknown family sits around a large dining room table eating Thanksgiving dinner. The father cuts the turkey as everyone is having a good time.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
Happiness is bliss. All families strive for it. They all yearn for it. Any mother or father, or grandmother or grandfather wants their family to be perfect. They strive for a harmonious and impeccable balance between parent and child. Brother and sister. Husband and wife.
EXT. PARK - DAY
Some young children playfully throw snowballs at each other. Their breath condensation emanates from their mouths as they laugh in the chilly afternoon.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
Truth is this balance they look for, this utopian family life, it's non-existent.
A young couple walk hand in hand down the snowy path through the park.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
Families are screwed up. That's just the way it is. You can't change it, you can't fight it. It's just a fact. Some more than others, all in different ways. My family....yeah, my family is screwed-up.
CUT TO:
TITLE and CREDIT SEQUENCE.
FADE IN:
INT. CARL'S BATHROOM - MORNING
In the mirror's reflection stands CARL SHEA (33). He has short dark hair and a somewhat rugged face. He brushes his teeth and upon finishing stares at himself with contempt and regret.
He splashes some water over his face, washing the sleep away. His eyes look sad and tired.
INT. FRONT ROOM - MORNING
Carl sits on his sofa, leaned over tying his shoes. As he finishes, he glances at a picture on his end-table. It's his mother, MARY. In the picture she is a striking young woman with curly golden hair. He smiles, his eyes welling up slightly.
Suddenly the door opens and his sister NATALIE enters. Natalie's an attractive brunette in her mid-twenties. She is a sophisticated working woman, wearing a nice black dress.
NATALIE
Hey Bro’.
Carl smiles as they embrace with a tender hug. She takes a seat next to him on the sofa as he leans back and sighs loudly.
NATALIE
How are you doing?
CARL
I'm okay. Been working a lot lately. Exhausting.
NATALIE
No, how are you DOING?
She nods toward the picture of their mother.
Carl smiles, hiding his sorrow. He shrugs, not sure how to answer the question.
CARL
How are you doing?
NATALIE
Keeping it together. That's about all I can do at this point. You know, ten years ago this would have been a lot harder. Not seeing her so long is definitely making this whole experience easier.
CARL
I wish I would have gone to Italy, at least once. I missed her so much, Eleanor too.
NATALIE
It was hard. Working and trying to stay afloat here. I'm sure all of us would have loved a vacation in Italy. It just didn't happen. She understood.
CARL
You think so?
NATALIE
I hope so.
BEAT.
CARL
I can't believe Eleanor is coming back.
Both of their expressions light up now.
NATALIE
It's incredible, right? Haven't seen her in TEN years! She's probably so grown up now.
CARL
Sixteen...wow.
NATALIE
I bet she hasn't changed one bit.
Carl chuckles softly as he stands.
CARL
Well, you ready?
She sighs, shrugs and stands.
NATALIE
As ready as I'll ever be.
He helps her with her coat and opens the front door for her.
INT. CAR - EVENING
THOMAS (27) sits in the driver’s seat, staring at the steering wheel. He is clean-shaven and handsome.
THOMAS
Please, will you do it for me? Just until after the funeral?
In the passenger seat sits Lauren, Thomas' fiancée. She is a few years younger than him. She has curly blonde hair and dreamy blue eyes. Many similarities to the family’s late-mother. The words from Thomas seem to be very upsetting to her.
LAUREN
This isn't going to change anything, Tom.
THOMAS
I know, I know. Please, just for a while.
She rolls her eyes.
LAUREN
Okay, okay. But I'm only doing it in respect to your mother and your family.
Thomas accepts the answer as he smiles.
THOMAS
Well, here we go.
They exit the car. The streets of Salem, Oregon are covered with a thick layer of snow. They approach a large colonial-style house.
EXT. SHEA HOME - CONTINUOUS
Thomas takes a deep breath and RINGS the doorbell.
He and Lauren wait in an awkward silence until the door swings open.
At the door is PAULIE (20). He's the Shea family's step-brother. He wears all black and his jet-black hair hangs just right over his face, in perfect emo fashion.
Without as much as a "hello", Paulie walks away leaving the two at the doorstep.
THOMAS
(from outside)
Nice to see you too Paulie.
They enter.
INT. SHEA HOME - CONTINUOUS
As they enter a few other family members hurry to greet them.
First is the seventeen year old step-sister KIRA. She's a petite girl, very pretty.
KIRA
Hey guys, it's good to see you!
She hugs them both. JOAN, their grandmother, is next in line for hugs. She is a typical grandmother, short and frail with thin gray hair. But this grandmother definitely has a feisty side to her as she smacks Lauren playfully on the butt.
JOAN
Tommy, ya' did good!
Lauren blushes as Thomas smiles proudly. Joan kisses Thomas on the cheeks, scrunching his face up like a child.
THOMAS
Hey grandma, you look good.
JOAN
Yeah, yeah. Always the charmer, this one.
As he hugs her he sees MARTIN (30). He's the middle brother, yet taller than both. He has a big pouch of a gut, which tends to make him look silly. He wears an old faded Troy Aikman football jersey and goofy Hawaiian shorts. Obviously the black sheep of the family.
Martin takes a gulp of his BEER.
MARTIN
Hey Tom.
THOMAS
Martin. So where's dad?
MARTIN
Upstairs.
THOMAS
Is he okay?
Martin shrugs, looking away.
SAMANTHA (O.S.)
Uncle Tom, Uncle Tom!
JOAN
(completely serious)
Who’s an Uncle Tom?
In rushes SAMANTHA, Martin's eight year old daughter. She hugs Thomas' legs tightly. He kneels down to get a good look at her.
THOMAS
Holy cow, you're gettin' so big!
She smiles brightly as she stands on her tippy-toes. He stands back up as Carl and Natalie enters the room, each with a cup of coffee.
CARL
Look who decided to show up.
They grin at each other and share brotherly hugs.
THOMAS
Man, it's been so long. How the hell are you guys doin'?
They all modestly shrug, not wanting to divulge into their personal lives.
JOAN
So, who's excited to see Eleanor?
Everyone now talks all at once, all of it blending together to make it impossible to comprehend.
JOAN
Good. I am too. So excited I need a drink!
Kira rolls her eyes as she slouches onto the couch.
NATALIE
Lauren, would you like something to drink?
Lauren looks very uncomfortable and out of place. She smiles shyly.
LAUREN
Sure, thanks.
She follows Natalie to the kitchen.
THOMAS
So where's Lisa?
Carl looks hesitant to speak.
BEAT.
THOMAS
You guys broke up?
CARL
Yeah, about a month ago.
THOMAS
(disappointed)
Ahh, what happened?
CARL
Just didn't work out. The usual.
THOMAS
How many is that in the past two years? Eight?
Carl ignores his comment.
THOMAS
I'll tell you since I took those seminars in March, I can see things so much clearer, man. You should think about getting into those, don't want to grow up old and alone.
CARL
(sarcastically)
Thanks Thomas.
(looking at Martin)
I'm gonna' go check on dad.
Carl heads up the stairs. Now Thomas goes after Martin.
THOMAS
(condescending)
What about you Marty? Still livin' single?
INT. JAMES' BEDROOM - EVENING
The father, JAMES, sits on his bed sentimentally looking through an old photo album. He's in his mid-fifties, his hair already showing signs of gray.
There is a soft KNOCK at the door as Carl enters. James wipes a tear from his cheek and smiles.
JAMES
Hey, son. Good to see you.
The two hug lovingly.
CARL
Sorry...about mom.
James takes a seat again, the mention of his ex-wife making him a little light-headed.
JAMES
It was quick. Painless.
CARL
That's good.
Long awkward BEAT.
CARL (cont.)
When does Eleanor get in?
JAMES
(overwhelmed)
Six. I think, I can't remember.
CARL
I can't wait to see her. Ten years, dad.
JAMES
Yeah.
CARL
Dad, are you going to be okay?
James is beginning to crack.
JAMES
I...I haven't seen my daughter since she was six years old. She was just a baby. Now, god damn she is sixteen. She's a teenager! She barely even knows who I am and I know next to nothing about her. I don't want her to resent me. I don't want her to think I'm a bad father.
CARL
It's gonna' be alright. She's just as scared as you, dad. She feels exactly the same way as you. We all do. We haven't seen her either. I haven't even talked to her on the phone in, what, five years?
JAMES
It's just too much. Too much for a person to take. I mean, I'm just barely getting over Lorraine passing away. Now Mary? When it rains it pours.
CARL
(livening up the mood)
Whoever coined that phrase was a genius!
James chuckles, again wiping his damp eyes.
CARL (cont.)
Everyone's here. Tommy, Lauren, Natalie. Let's go downstairs.
JAMES
Yeah, you go ahead. I'll be down in just a minute.
Carl smiles and nods. He hugs him one last time.
CARL
It's good to be home.
James pats his shoulder before he exits.
INT. FRONT ROOM - EVENING
The rest of the family lounges around the front room chatting. Kira is sprawled out next to her grandmother.
KIRA
I'm takin' Eleanor to a party tomorrow night. It's gonna' be sledge!
MARTIN
What's “sledge”?
JOAN
Cool, rad, awesome. The shit, Martin.
Everyone looks at her shockingly.
KIRA
Way ta' go grandma.
She shrugs and goes back to watching the television.
NATALIE
A party the day before the funeral? You sure that's a good idea?
KIRA
Yeah! It's a great idea, the best way to grieve.
NATALIE
Where did you hear that wonderful piece of advice?
Natalie looks at Martin suspiciously. He shrugs innocently.
MARTIN
Wasn’t me. I ain't “sledge”.
Kira rolls her eyes at him.
KIRA
I didn't hear it anywhere. Everyone knows it.
MARTIN
This reminds me of this time I went to a party back when mom and dad were still together. I was like, seventeen or somethin'....
His voice fades out while Natalie acts as if she's listening. But really she is thinking about her mother. Her expression turns sorrowful as she thinks about the time they missed with her.
BEAT.
Eventually we zoom back in, but just to catch the tail-end of Martin’s story.
MARTIN
That is why I'll never streak through a dairy farm again!
Everyone looks at Martin appalled and disgusted.
NATALIE
With that, I'm going to go outside and have a smoke.
Lauren jumps up to follow.
LAUREN
I'll join you!
Martin looks blankly at everyone staring at him, not understanding.
MARTIN
What?
EXT. PORCH - EVENING
Natalie and Lauren laugh at Martin as they approach the lawn set outside. Paulie is knelt over by the railing, concealing something. A large puff of smoke emits from him as he tosses something over the ledge and into the snow. He glares at them as he heads inside.
PAULIE
What?!?
NATALIE
Paulie, were you just smoking pot?
PAULIE
(overly dramatic)
NO! Jeez, just stay outta' my life!
Natalie laughs as Paulie enters the house. Lauren just watches uncomfortably.
NATALIE
Don't worry, now that you'll be family you'll be treating him like that too. Comes with the territory.
Lauren smiles.
LAUREN
I know I haven't said anything, but I'm sorry about your mother.
She brushes it off.
NATALIE
It's okay.
She looks off in the distance at nothing in particular.
NATALIE (cont.)
She was really something special though. I wish you could've met her, she'd have loved you.
She looks at Lauren like it's the first time she's seen her.
NATALIE (cont.)
You know, now that I think about it, you look an awful lot like her.
She smiles coyly.
NATALIE (cont.)
I guess Freud was right. About Tommy at least.
They chuckle at his expense. Lauren still looks a bit uneasy.
INT. SHEA HOME - EVENING
Now everyone is downstairs, except Natalie and Lauren. The medium-sized house is obviously overpopulated and stuffy.
CARL
Alright, I'm gonna' go get some stuff for dinner.
THOMAS
I'll go with you.
MARTIN
Three's a party!
CARL
Right. Paulie, wanna' come?
Paulie sits on the couch listening to his IPOD. Keeping the world shutout, he doesn't even hear him.
The three brothers head out the door.
MARTIN
Jeffrey Dahmer anyone?
Carl mouths "shhh" as they exit.
EXT. SHEA HOME - CONTINUOUS
They see the girls sitting on the porch as they leave.
MARTIN
Nat', could you keep an eye on Sam while we run to the market?
She winks at him.
NATALIE
(sarcastically)
Sure thing Mart'!
He doesn't even hear her response as he heads toward Carl's car.
NATALIE
(to Lauren)
I hate it when he calls me that.
Now at the car.
THOMAS
Shotgun!
Martin is seconds too late.
MARTIN
Shotgun!
Thomas slyly smiles.
THOMAS
Sorry, man.
MARTIN
Shut up. I'm older...get in the backseat.
THOMAS
Marty, that might've worked twenty years ago. Times change my friend.
MARTIN
Rock, paper, scissors for it.
Thomas rolls his eyes.
THOMAS
Just get in the backseat.
MARTIN
Afraid?
THOMAS
Fine.
1, 2, 3 they show their weapon. Thomas shows rock and Martin shows paper. Martin wins.
MARTIN
Ha! Sorry about your luck.
Martin leans toward the passenger side door and Thomas shoves him. Martin topples backward over a large mound of snow landing flat on his back.
Thomas climbs in the car as Martin hurries to brush himself off.
THOMAS
I win.
INT. CAR - CONTINUOUS
Martin jumps in the backseat covered in a thin layer of snow. Carl finds the whole situation wildly amusing.
MARTIN
Good job. Hit me with a cheap shot.
CARL
Still gettin' picked on by the youngest Martin?
MARTIN
All I'm gonna' say is if he hadn't fooled me with his --
(does hand gestures)
roshambo trickery, I'd be sittin' in the front seat right now.
CARL
Right.
THOMAS
Roshambo?
MARTIN
Shut it, Tonya Harding. I got freakin' snow in my damn crotch!
THOMAS
Why the hell are you wearing shorts in the middle of winter? Hawaiian shorts no less. I don't want to be seen in public with you, you should have changed.
Martin ignores the comment.
CARL
We ready kids?
He pulls away and heads down the snowy street.
INT. GROCERY STORE - EVENING
Carl pushes a cart through the produce section. He grabs some fresh vegetables and tosses them into the cart. Next to him, unaware of his surroundings, Thomas clicks away on his blackberry like a robot.
BANG! Martin drops a case of BUDWEISER into the cart, startling Carl. He also tosses in a bag of potato chips. Carl gives him a look of disgust.
MARTIN
What? One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Carl shakes his head at his terrible use of an analogy.
VALERIE
Tommy? Is that you?
Thomas looks up to see VALERIE, an old flame, standing before him. She's an attractive girl with long dark hair. She is wearing ultra-tight jeans and a belly shirt. Tramp stamp included.
THOMAS
Valerie? Wow, I haven't seen you since --
BOTH IN UNISON
High school!
VALERIE
I know, right? This is just crazy!
Martin leans against a case of bananas, trying to look cool.
MARTIN
Hey, I'm Tommy's big brother. Martin.
VALERIE
(snobby)
Hi.
(back to Thomas)
So how have you been?
Carl heads to the checkout line as Martin follows in shame.
THOMAS
Good, I guess. How about you?
VALERIE
Good. Just broke up with my boyfriend. So yeah, I'm pretty much single now.
THOMAS
I see...
Conversation trails off as we look at them from Carl's P.O.V. at the checkout line.
Martin flips through the newest issue of Cosmopolitan, turning it sideways as if it's a playboy centerfold.
Carl continues watching Thomas as he talks to Valerie. She writes her number down on a piece of paper and places it in Thomas' hand, winking at him as she walks away.
As Thomas approaches his two brothers he exchanges a glance with Carl. No words necessary.
EXT. GROCERY STORE - EVENING
The three walk out, Carl pushing the cart toward his car. Martin has the Cosmo’ under his arm like a newspaper.
MARTIN
Who's Miss Coyote Ugly?
THOMAS
What?
Martin nods back toward the store.
THOMAS (cont.)
Oh, just an old friend. So what's up with you guys’ love-lives? Or lack thereof.
MARTIN
I do just fine, thank you very much.
THOMAS
Yeah?
CARL
Knock it off Tom.
THOMAS
Hey, I'm just tryin' to help. You should really check out these seminars I've been goin' to. Opens your eyes to so much, man. I used to be just like you guys. Didn't have a lady, didn't know how to talk to a lady. Destined to be alone. But look at me now. Look at Lauren. Some would say I'm blessed.
CARL
But you'd disagree...
THOMAS
Absolutely. I wasn't blessed. I MADE that happen. Why should I share the credit with an all-knowing deity? He didn't speak at those seminars! If anything, I'm blessed by Dr. Phillip Riley. But hell, even he can't get the credit. He TOLD me how to do it...but I did it!
MARTIN
Sounds like a cult to me.
THOMAS
Sounds like a cult to you. Jeez, Marty. Wake up! It's good for you, man. Good for the soul. We take boating trips, camping, hiking, you name it. It's about socializing, being free. You know?
MARTIN
Just don't offer me any Kool-Aid.
Thomas gives up as they get in the car.
INT. SHEA HOME - EVENING
The rest of the family sits around the front room as before. Natalie and her father are playing Rummy. Lauren watches quietly.
JAMES
So, how's life?
NATALIE
Life is good dad. I just got promoted to Senior VP of sales.
JAMES
(proudly)
Well, congrats. I'm happy for you.
NATALIE
And you, dad? Are you okay?
JAMES
Sure, sure. Don't worry about me. Just anxious to see Elle, I guess.
Kira jumps into the conversation at this point.
KIRA
Eleanor is going to be my best friend. You watch. I'll bet we’re just alike.
James chuckles at her, Natalie too.
JAMES
You'd be surprised.
KIRA
Hey!
She hits him softly in the bicep.
KIRA (cont.)
Besides, we've already got one thing in common.
NATALIE
What's that?
KIRA
Both of our mothers are dead.
JAMES
Kira Michelle! Watch your mouth!
KIRA
It was just a joke, take a pill...
JAMES
Do not say things like that once Eleanor get's here. I mean it!
KIRA
Okay, whatever.
She stomps away angrily. Natalie rubs his back, calming him down.
The door shoots open and the brothers enter carrying bags.
MARTIN
Hey Pop!
He pats his shoulder as he walks by. James pats his hand comfortingly.
Martin enters the kitchen for a brief moment before reentering the front room, holding a bottle of whiskey high above his head.
MARTIN
We got booze!
James shakes his head playfully. He looks down at Samantha who is sitting on the floor next to him.
JAMES
Where did I go wrong that kid?
Samantha laughs as James makes a childish face at her.
Out of nowhere Joan rushes down the stairs in a panic.
JOAN
Jim! Get your ass up Jim, it's almost five-thirty. We gotta' get to the airport!
Everyone jumps up and rushes around to get ready. Chaos ensues.
EXT. AIRPORT - EVENING
ESTABLISHING SHOT of the Airport. A plane flies directly overhead.
INT. AIRPORT TERMINAL B - EVENING
Everyone is crowded on the benches near the exit, awaiting Eleanor's arrival. Joan holds an absurdly large SIGN that in bright pink letters reads:
WELCOME HOME ELEANOR RIGBY!
People stares as they walk by the strange old woman. But she doesn't care.
Samantha and Kira are down the terminal a little ways playing with a yoyo. Martin leans awkwardly against a pole impatiently, still dressed in his Aikman jersey and shorts.
MARTIN
(looking at his watch)
What's the holdup?
CARL
It's snowing pretty good out there, Marty. Probably a delay.
MARTIN
Delay? Shoooot.
(staring into space)
You know I used to fly smaller charter planes down at Harpers?
THOMAS
(bored)
You don't say?
Martin, offended, glares at him.
MARTIN
What's that mean?
THOMAS
Nothin' Marty. Carry on.
MARTIN
No I'm not going to carry on. Explain yourself. What does "You don't say" mean exactly?
No response. Martin throws his arms in the air confrontationally.
MARTIN (cont.)
Well? Let's hear it!
Joan stands up, still holding the sign with both hands.
JOAN
Marty, you've told that story about a thousand times. That is what "you don't say" means. We all know the story quite well.
(trailing off)
Damn Doctor says I'm sufferin' from dementia...he's the demented one. Pickin’ and proddin’ at me with those metal tools.
MARTIN
That's not true. I think I'd know if I had told everyone that story before. Lauren hasn't heard it. Right, Lauren?
Lauren starts to open her mouth but is interrupted.
JOAN
You have too, Martin. I've been there for at least nine hundred of 'em.
(to Lauren)
He almost crashed. That's the big punch-line.
Lauren smiles respectfully. Martin begins to speak but--
JOAN (cont.)
Shush.
Everyone is getting a kick out of their argument, except Lauren who still manages to look oddly out of place.
CARL
Here they come!
Now people begin filing out through the security areas, meeting with their families on the other side. Everyone waits...and waits....and waits. While most look overjoyed, James face is covered with anxiety and nervousness.
BEAT.
Suddenly, behind an elderly couple we see medium-length golden blonde hair bouncing. It's ELEANOR. The young girl (16) is stunningly attractive. A classic beauty. She smiles brightly when she sees everyone.
Carl places a hand on James' shoulder.
CARL
Calm, dad. Calm.
He smiles nervously.
Before she heads toward her family, Eleanor stops with the elderly couple that was in front of her. She hugs both of them, the woman kissing her lovingly on the cheek.
She waves goodbye to them and finally arrives in her family's waiting arms. She smiles brightly as she hugs her Grandmother, still holding the sign. She hugs all of them warmly, saying hello as well.
She is now standing directly in front of her father.
ELEANOR
(sweetly)
Hello, dad.
JAMES
(tearing)
It's good to see you Eleanor.
They embrace tightly.
Everyone is speaking at once, overwhelming Eleanor as they head out of the terminal.
NATALIE
Who were those people?
Eleanor looks back at the elderly couple heading down the escalator.
ELEANOR
Them? Oh, just a sweet couple I met on the plane. They were on vacation in Sicily. Very nice people.
Natalie chuckles. Eleanor's just as magnetic as she used to be.
INT. SHEA HOME - EVENING
James opens the door, gesturing for Eleanor to enter. She walks in and stares at every inch of it in amazement.
ELEANOR
Wow. It looks just like it did when I was six.
She touches the railing on the staircase, remembering.
JOAN
You remember back that far?
ELEANOR
Absolutely.
JOAN
I envy you little lady.
CARL
Come on Elle, we'll show you your room.
She follows as Natalie and Carl lead her up the stairs. Everyone else goes about their usual business.
INT. KIRA'S BEDROOM - EVENING
Carl carries in Eleanor's bags, setting them by the closet. She carries only her red backpack strapped over her shoulders. Natalie has her arm around her as they enter the room.
NATALIE
This is Kira's bedroom. You'll have to share the room with our step-sister.
ELEANOR
(curiously)
Evil step-sister?
She playfully smiles.
NATALIE
Nah.
ELEANOR
Good.
Eleanor sets her backpack down on the floor and stretches out on the bed.
ELEANOR
Ahh, I needed that. Such a long flight, my God!
Carl and Natalie now join her, lying back on the bed staring at the ceiling. P.O.V. from ceiling staring down at the three siblings.
BEAT.
NATALIE
So how have you been?
ELEANOR
You mean about mom?
Natalie nods.
ELEANOR
Okay. I'm just thankful I got to spend the last ten years of her life with her. In Italy, no less.
CARL
Must be beautiful, huh?
ELEANOR
Surreal. The word beautiful just doesn't do it justice.
CARL
It's so great to see you Elle. I...we've all missed you so much.
She cuddles up to Carl lovingly.
ELEANOR
Yeah, yeah. Don't get all sappy on me now.
Her and Natalie laugh.
CARL
Really though, I'm sorry I never came out. I wish I had.
ELEANOR
I didn't fly six thousand miles to hear apologies from everyone.
(to Natalie)
And that goes for you as well.
BEAT.
ELEANOR (cont.)
I'm here to see all of you. We missed the last decade, but it doesn't matter now. This matters. Times like these are what matters. I missed every single one of you, even Martin.
Carl laughs overly loud.
NATALIE
Well, it's good to have you back.
Long BEAT. They continue staring at the ceiling, enjoying each others presence and the relaxing silence. Until --
From outside the door we hear Martin.
MARTIN (O.S.)
(yelling)
Damn it Kira! You plugged up the toilet again!
KIRA (O.S.)
(also yelling)
Thanks Martin! Tell the whole freakin' neighborhood why don't ya'!
The three giggle quietly on the bed.
INT. DINING ROOM – EVENING
The entire family sits around the large oak dinner table. Natalie, Joan and Lauren serve the food. Eleanor sits at the center of the table, between Thomas and Carl.
KIRA
Eleanor, I’m going to a party tomorrow night. You wanna’ come? It’s gonna’ be awesome!
ELEANOR
Yeah, I’d love to. Didn’t go to many parties in Italy.
JAMES
I trust things won’t get too out of hand, Kira?
KIRA
You have nothing to worry about, dad.
Martin reaches for the salt in the middle of the table, nearly knocking over everyone’s drinks.
MARTIN
I remember this party I went to. Carl, you were there. Maybe, what? Ten, twelve years ago. Mom was so worried about us she called the cops. Hoo-wee. Let me tell you.
CLOSE on Eleanor as his voice fades out.
DISSOLVE TO:
FLASHBACK SEQUENCE, B&W:
In the same house they sit right now, James and the recently deceased Mary stand in the kitchen. They are both yelling at the top of their lungs.
At the top of the stairs is six year old Eleanor, peeking through the wooden posts. She looks deathly afraid, trembling.
Now Eleanor is getting in a plane with her mother. She turns and waves goodbye to her father, who wipes away the tears. Eleanor blows him a kiss and climbs aboard the plane.
END FLASHBACK SEQUENCE.
INT. DINING ROOM – EVENING
Martin is just finishing up his story.
MARTIN
I’m telling you, never streak through a cornfield. Talk about excruciating pain!
THOMAS
Dad, are you sure Marty didn’t have A.D.D.?
Most of the table laughs; Martin doesn’t even skip a beat.
MARTIN
It’s funny you mention that, Tom. I haven’t played Advanced Dungeons and Dragons since High School.
Eleanor is the only one at the table who laughs at his joke. Everyone looks at her strangely.
ELEANOR
Carl, where’s Lisa? Last letter I got from you, you said you guys might be getting married.
Carl smiles awkwardly and sadly.
CARL
Didn’t work out, that’s all.
She grimaces, embarrassed that she brought up the sore subject.
ELEANOR
Sorry.
He shrugs.
THOMAS
What is going on in this family? Are you all purposely trying to live your lives alone? I mean, come on!
Everyone seems offended. Eleanor glances at him, surprised by his malicious attack out of left field.
NATALIE
Thomas, I for one have been busy with my career. It takes up a lot of my time so, yeah; I haven’t had a chance to form a relationship with anyone. Martin has Samantha; Carl’s goin’ through a rough patch. I think you should lay off.
THOMAS
Look, I’m not tryin’ to hurt anyone’s feelings here. The point I’m trying to make is that you guys should find someone. You shouldn’t waste your lives alone. It’s no way to live.
Carl finally explodes. He’s heard enough.
CARL
You know you’re right, Thomas. I’m alone. Natalie’s alone. Martin’s alone. Hell, now even dads, alone, but you won’t say anything about that will you?
Thomas begins to speak but Carl isn’t finished.
CARL
Maybe we’re all just a big waste of space. Maybe we’re just destined to live our lives alone! You think that’s it? Maybe we did something wrong in our past, we’re being punished?
THOMAS
Carl, calm down.
CARL
Calm down? No, you want to get it all out on the table, then let’s get it out there. I guess it’s not as easy for everyone else as it is for you, Thomas. We don’t randomly get hit on at super markets.
Now Thomas looks pissed as he glances at Lauren.
THOMAS
Damn it, Carl! You think I’m just lucky? These things just happen to me? I told you before, I MAKE them happen. Anyone can, you just have to have the discipline to learn how.
LAUREN
Tom, just stop.
CARL
He can’t. All he knows how to do is criticize.
THOMAS
Carl, you are so full of—
James stands up and defiantly slams his fist on the table, rattling the dishes and the family.
JAMES
Damn it, can we not have a peaceful dinner? Everyone complains that we never see each other anymore. You ever think about why? Where is everyone’s manners? Show some damn respect, would you? Acting so crazy when Eleanor’s only been here for a couple of hours! It’s been ten years for Christ sake.
Everyone sits quietly. They all look like they want to speak, but continue to bite their tongues.
JAMES (cont.)
It takes a death just to get everyone together. And this is how you all act? She would be ashamed of you guys. We have enough, excuse me –
He nods to Kira who knowingly places her hands over Samantha’s ears.
JAMES (cont.)
We have enough shit to go around right now, we don’t need more.
She let’s Samantha hear again.
Very awkward BEAT as the family continues eating in silence.
Samantha looks around the room.
SAMANTHA
Where is the shit?
The whole table looks at her in shock.
SAMANTHA (cont.)
What?
INT. FAMILY ROOM – NIGHT
Everyone is now seated around the family room post-dinner.
ELEANOR
(yelling into the kitchen)
You sure I can’t help you with the dishes?
INT. KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
Lauren and Natalie stand in front of the sink, arms covered in suds.
NATALIE
(yelling back)
Absolutely not!
INT. FAMILY ROOM – CONTINUOUS
Joan, in her pajamas, leans over and kisses Eleanor on the top of her golden hair. Eleanor smiles.
JOAN
Goodnight sweetheart.
ELEANOR
Goodnight, grandma.
Joan heads up stairs. Martin sits in the corner playing electric guitar. Playing it poorly, but playing it nonetheless.
CARL
So, Eleanor. You still play the piano?
ELEANOR
A little bit.
THOMAS
Have you learned anything new?
She doesn’t even hesitate as she answers matter-of-factly.
ELEANOR
Nope.
She leans back in the recliner and sighs happily.
ELEANOR
So weird being back here.
KIRA
Are you trying to change the subject?
Eleanor smiles modestly.
KIRA (cont.)
Play something.
She points over to the dusty piano in the corner of the room. Eleanor shakes her head.
ELEANOR
No, no, it’s okay. Really.
THOMAS
Aww, come on. Let’s hear somethin’.
ELEANOR
I only know one song.
KIRA
So play it.
ELEANOR
No, I better not. Grandma just went to sleep.
There is a loud knock from the upstairs floor.
JOAN (O.S.)
(yelling)
Play it!
Everyone laughs.
JAMES
She’s got great hearing, even in her old age.
CARL
Well? What do you say?
Eleanor smiles modestly as she stands up and approaches the piano.
She takes a seat and blows on the keys. A large cloud of dust floats through the air.
She begins, her fingers hitting the keys rhythmically.
James watches her closely, so many emotions running through him. Joy, sorrow, pride, you name it. The music touches him deeply.
She sings as she plays.
ELEANOR
When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me. Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Everyone’s attention is focused on the young girl with the beautiful voice. Eleanor plays and sings, swaying with the music. Her eyes remain closed.
ELEANOR (cont.)
And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me.
ELEANOR (cont.)
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
INT. KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
Natalie and Lauren are still washing dishes. The music plays softly in the background. Natalie closes her eyes as she listens.
ELEANOR (O.S.)
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
Lauren looks impressed as she listens. She leans close to Natalie.
LAUREN
(softly)
Why do I recognize this?
NATALIE
It’s The Beatles.
Lauren smiles.
LAUREN
Of course.
INT. FAMILY ROOM – CONTINUOUS
CLOSE on Eleanor as she continues to play.
ELEANOR
And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree. There will be an answer, let it be.
INT. JOAN’S BEDROOM – CONTINUOUS
OVERHEAD shot of Joan as she lies underneath her blankets. She stares up at the ceiling with a very big grin on her face.
ELEANOR (O.S.)
But though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see. There will be an answer, let it be.
INT. FAMILY ROOM – CONTINUOUS
Everyone seems mesmerized by Eleanor as she finishes up the song.
CLOSE on her again as she hits the end. Her face is flushed, from singing and the emotional strain the song brings to her. Her voice slightly cracks during the last section.
ELEANOR
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be! There will be an answer, let it be! Let it be, let it be! Oh, let it be, let it be! Whisper words of wisdom, let it be...
As she finishes with the last of the piano keys, a single tear rolls down her cheek. As she stops playing she quickly wipes it away before turning around.
Carl approaches her from behind and hugs her tightly, kissing her wet cheek.
KIRA
Eleanor, that was awesome! Really. Why haven’t you learned anything else?
Eleanor glances at her father, who smiles knowingly.
ELEANOR
That is the only song that my mom knew. She used to play it for me when I was a kid.
BEAT.
ELEANOR (cont.)
Once I was old enough she taught me how to play it. She never learned any other song, so neither did I.
JAMES
You sounded just like her.
She smiles coyly.
ELEANOR
Thanks.
MARTIN
There’s more though right? Like, that’s not the whole song is it?
ELEANOR
No, there’s another verse afterward. But in between is a guitar lead.
MARTIN
You didn’t learn that part?
ELEANOR
Don’t have a guitar.
MARTIN
Oh.
James stands and yawns.
JAMES
Well everyone, I’m exhausted. I’ll see you all in the morning.
He gives everyone a hug and kiss before heading up the stairs.
INT. KITCHEN – MORNING
The next morning Eleanor is pushing some buttons on the coffee maker. The sun shines brightly through the blinds. She casually eats a banana as she whips up the coffee. Joan enters.
JOAN
I thought I was always the early bird.
Eleanor smiles as Joan takes a seat at the nook. She pours a cup of the coffee, steam rising from the mug.
ELEANOR
Here, I made some fresh coffee.
She sets it in front of Joan, who smiles delightfully.
JOAN
Ooh, thank you dear. I never could get that damn coffee pot to work. Too new-age for me.
Eleanor chuckles as she looks out the back window. A look of shock appears on her face.
ELEANOR
Oh my God. I can’t believe it’s still here.
JOAN
What?
CUT TO:
INT. BACKYARD – MORNING
Eleanor trots through the snow in boots and her pajamas. She approaches a large tree with a tire swing hanging from it. The swing is covered in snow, but she takes a seat on it anyway.
FLASHBACK SEQUENCE, B&W:
A little blonde girl, Eleanor, sits on the same tire swing. The weather is much nicer, just a lot of fall leaves on the ground.
From behind comes a little boy as he pushes her on the swing. She squeals with excitement.
ELEANOR
Higher, Lenny! Go higher!
Lenny smiles as he pushes her a little harder. She LEAPS off at the height of her swing and falls on the grass hard. He rushes over and kneels down next to her.
LENNY
Are you okay?
She sits up, her knee a bit scratched up.
ELEANOR
Yes.
He awkwardly leans forward and plants a kiss right on Eleanor’s lips. They both look at each other in shock until he jumps up and runs away nervously. She doesn’t move as she watches him escape.
END FLASHBACK.
Eleanor sits on the tree swing smiling as she thinks about the past.
MARTIN
Should I call the psych-ward?
He startles Eleanor.
MARTIN (cont.)
(holding an invisible phone)
Yeah we’ve got a little blonde girl, swinging on a tire in the middle of November wearing pajamas and snow boots. Bring the straight jacket!
She laughs.
MARTIN (cont.)
What are you thinking so hard about?
ELEANOR
Just thinking.
BEAT.
ELEANOR (cont.)
What happened to the people who lived next door?
MARTIN
The McCallisters?
ELEANOR
Yeah.
Martin struggles to remember.
MARTIN
Umm...last I remember they moved, but I’m not sure where. That’s right, you and their son was close, huh?
She shrugs.
MARTIN
What was his name?
He again struggles as his memory fails him.
MARTIN
Louie, Louis. Lars...damn it, I can’t remember.
ELEANOR
Lenny.
MARTIN
Lenny! That’s it! Eleanor Rigby’s first boyfriend.
Her face reddens.
ELEANOR
Shut up, Marty.
MARTIN
Well, I’ll let you go back to your daydreaming...about Lil’ Lenny McCallister.
She rolls her eyes as he heads back inside. Eleanor backs up, still sitting on the tire. She lifts her feet and swings high in the air.
CUT TO:
INT. FAMILY ROOM – DAY
CLOSE on the television. An episode of Jerry Springer is playing as some unknown family throw chairs at each other.
Eleanor sits in the recliner watching as she drinks hot cocoa. Joan rushes into the room in a panic.
JOAN
Damn, damn, damn.
ELEANOR
Grandma, what’s wrong?
Searching every inch of the room.
JOAN
I’m late for bingo! I can’t find my red sweater!
ELEANOR
You look fine, grandma.
Joan moves Eleanor to look underneath her.
JOAN
Eleanor, you don’t understand! That’s my lucky sweater, I can’t play bingo in a normal shirt. That’s ridiculous!
BEAT.
JOAN
Damn it, where is it!?!
A look of realization comes across Eleanor’s face. She slightly smiles.
ELEANOR
Grandma, the sweater...does it have two deer on the front? Little white snowflakes?
Joan’s eyes widen.
JOAN
That’s the one! You saw it?
ELEANOR
Yeah, I see it.
(pointing)
You’re wearing it.
She looks down to see she is in fact wearing the missing sweater.
JOAN
God damned dementia is really pissing me off! Thank you dear.
Eleanor gives her a kiss on the cheek.
ELEANOR
Good luck. If you get lost on the way home make sure you call Martin.
JOAN
Ha-ha, very funny. Tell him to keep his phone on just in case though.
ELEANOR
Will do.
As Joan exits Kira comes down the stairs. She looks at Eleanor lazily sprawled across the recliner.
KIRA
Eleanor, you better get ready.
Looking over her shoulder to Kira on the stairs.
ELEANOR
Ready? Ready for what?
KIRA
You forgot? Come on girl.
She grabs her arm and leads her toward the stairs.
KIRA (cont.)
You forgot about our first party together?
ELEANOR
Oh yeah. Sorry.
They head upstairs.
INT. BEDROOM – DAY
Kira looks at herself in the mirror, admiring her petite figure.
BEAT.
Eleanor exits the bathroom in a white bath robe. Her hair is damp from her shower.
KIRA
You need something to wear?
ELEANOR
No, I got some stuff.
Kira proceeds to go through Eleanor’s suitcase without asking. Eleanor doesn’t seem to mind.
KIRA
No you don’t. Unless maybe if we were going to church. Which of course, we’re not. You lived in Italy, girl, where’s all your good stuff?
ELEANOR
(naïvely)
I dunno’. That is my good stuff.
KIRA
Remind me to take you shopping sometime soon. Come on, you can where something of mine.
Eleanor begins to object.
KIRA (cont.)
No, no. I insist. I’ll make ya’ look good, I promise.
She smiles politely as Kira rushes to her closet, rummaging through clothes. She stops instantly.
KIRA
Perfect!
Eleanor looks at what she’s picked out, not revealing it to the CAMERA. She doesn’t look to sure about it.
INT. FAMILY ROOM – DAY
Kira is downstairs. She stands over Martin who lies on the couch watching the television.
KIRA
Come on Marty! You have to take us!
MARTIN
I would Kira, I really would. Unfortunately we are in the semi-finals right now.
Kira looks blankly at the screen.
KIRA
What the hell are you watching?
MARTIN
The 2008 Cherry Pit Spitting Contest. Don’t worry, it’ll be over in an hour or so.
KIRA
That’s stupid! Just drive us!
MARTIN
I’m sorry Kira. For one, the Cherry Pit Spitting Contest is not stupid! These guys train just like any other athletes. Last years winner spit 56 and a half feet. Could you spit a cherry pit that far?
She just stares at him.
MARTIN (cont.)
I don’t think so! And secondly, I doubt dad would want you takin’ Eleanor to a stupid party anyway.
KIRA
Dad already said it was okay! Please, Martin! Pretty please with a big stupid cherry pit on top!
MARTIN
Good one...but no.
Carl enters the room smiling.
CARL
What’s all the fuss about?
KIRA
(whiney)
Martin said he’d take me and Eleanor to the party tonight. But he’s watching this dumb Cherry Spitting Contest! Carl, will you take us?
Carl takes a seat next to Martin and stares at the screen.
CARL
I didn’t know this was today!
MARTIN
Hell yeah! Semi-finals.
Carl leans back, getting comfortable. Kira is pissed.
KIRA
Carl!
CARL
(not looking away)
Yeah, what’s up?
KIRA
Will you take us?
Now he looks at her, his eyes pleading.
CARL
Kira, it’s the semis.
He sees she’s about to explode as she stomps her feet in a fit of rage.
CARL (cont.)
Okay, okay. I’ll take you.
She is now a big ball of schizophrenic joy. She hugs him dramatically.
KIRA
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
(yelling upstairs)
Eleanor, you almost ready?
ELEANOR (O.S.)
Coming!
Eleanor now makes her way down the stairs. She is wearing an incredible yellow sort of halter top dress. It comes down about to the knees and ties around the back of her neck. She smiles as Kira squeals giddily.
KIRA
Sexy! Now let’s go! It’s time to party! Carl, andale!
Carl watches the TV as long as he possibly can until he is pushed out the door by Kira. Eleanor and Kira both wear winter coats over their nice dresses.
Martin stands up and heads into the kitchen.
INT. KITCHEN – DAY
Martin enters and opens the refrigerator. James and Thomas are playing Rummy. Martin opens a bottle of Bud.
MARTIN
Dad you’re letting Eleanor and Kira go to a party?
He shrugs.
MARTIN
You trust Kira that much?
JAMES
I trust Eleanor.
Martin doesn’t look so sure as he heads back to the TV.
CUT TO:
INT. PARTY – EVENING
A front door opens to reveal Eleanor and Kira. They are welcomed in by one of the people at the party.
Music blares from the sound system in another room as about 40-50 people stand around having a good time. Quite a few of them stare at Eleanor as she walks through the home’s luxurious rooms.
They pass a few people, all holding red plastic cups.
INT. PARTY – KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS
Now in the kitchen we see a large keg and dozens of red plastic cups. BRAD, whose parents own the house, grabs Kira’s hand and leads her to the keg.
BRAD
I’m glad you made it!
KIRA
This is my step-sister. Eleanor.
Brad takes a long look at her interestingly. She waves awkwardly and mouths the word “hi”.
BRAD
Nice to meet you Eleanor. Mi casa, su casa.
Kira hands her a cup of beer. Brad drags her away quickly.
KIRA
Eleanor, mingle. I’ll be right back.
Eleanor smiles as she watches Brad drag Kira into the other room. She shyly leans against the counter and sips on her beer.
A large teenager, THAD, approaches her. He wears his red high-school football Jersey with the name “THAD” on the back.
THAD
Hey there. Never seen you here before.
ELEANOR
That’s ‘cause I’ve never been here before.
THAD
Right on.
He holds out his hand to shake.
THAD
I’m –
Turns to show his name printed on the back of his jersey.
THAD (cont.)
Thad. Nice to meet you –
ELEANOR
Eleanor. Eleanor Rigby.
He hesitates a moment.
THAD
Your name is Eleanor Rigby? For real?
ELEANOR
Sure is.
THAD
What kind of name is that?
She looks offended, but barely misses a beat.
ELEANOR
The traditional kind. First name, closely followed by the last.
He looks impressed at her wit. Even perhaps strangely turned on.
THAD
Touché.
ELEANOR
(sarcastically)
Ooh, French. You’re extensive cultural diversity amazes me.
He’s confused. Was that a compliment?
ELEANOR (cont.)
So, what kind of name is Thad?
THAD
Huh? Oh, I umm...I dunno’.
Another jock, this one extra brash, approaches. He slaps Thad on the back.
JOCK
Thad! What’s goin’ on brother?
They do a “special” handshake and bump chests. Eleanor uses this distraction to escape, retreating to a nearby couch.
On one corner of the couch a young couple make-out. Hands groping and touching one another. Eleanor sits as far to the edge as she can, looking very uncomfortable.
Another teenage guy comes and sits on the couch’s arm, right next to her. He has shaggy hair, your typical stoner-type.
STONER
Hey.
ELEANOR
Hey.
He offers her his thinly rolled joint.
STONER
Want a hit?
She is caught off-guard.
ELEANOR
No, umm...no thanks.
STONER
That’s all cool. You’re Eleanor right? Eleanor Rigby?
She nods.
STONER (cont.)
Man I freakin’ love the Beatles. No kiddin’. They are so freakin’ incredible. Seriously.
ELEANOR
Yeah. Me too. My mom was obsessed, hence the name.
STONER
So like, did they name the song after you?
She looks at him quizzically, unsure what he means.
ELEANOR
Who?
STONER
The Beatles. Did they name the song Eleanor Rigby after you?
She slightly smirks, trying to get a read on whether he’s joking or not. His facial expression remains the same as he waits for an answer.
ELEANOR
I’m sixteen.
STONER
Right. Me too!
She chuckles to herself.
STONER
Well, see ya’ later!
He exits and she relaxes a bit, still smiling at possibly the dumbest question she’s ever been asked.
INT. SHEA HOUSE – EVENING
In the family room the rest of the family are in the midst of a heated argument. It is obviously three-on-one. Carl, Martin and Natalie against, of course, Thomas.
NATALIE
Truth is Thomas, we’re all just really tired of you bringing our personal lives into every conversation! Ever since you turned into Tony-freaking Robbins all you do is talk down to everyone around you. I guess they didn’t teach you anything about discretion at your self-help classes?
Thomas sighs as he sits back in his chair.
THOMAS
No, I guess not. But they did teach me about denial. About the subjects unwillingness to accept the fact that they are in dire need of help. In the long run I promise you will thank me. Mark my words.
CARL
Thomas we’re not a bunch of heroin-addicts. Denial? Denial of what?
THOMAS
Denial of a lot of things. Faith for one. All changes start with faith, it’s the key.
They all look at him in bewilderment, like he’s on a completely different planet.
MARTIN
What the hell are you talking about, Applewhite?
Thomas throws his hands in the air in submission.
THOMAS
Real productive, Martin. Anytime a touchy subject comes up, you bring up the cult references. Are you afraid to embrace the changes, Martin?
Martin shivers.
MARTIN
Jesus Thomas, you’re givin’ me the willies.
As they all sit in an uncomfortable silence, Lauren stares at Thomas angrily.
EXT. PARTY – EVENING
In the glamorous backyard a heated crystal-clear pool is filled with drunken teens. A few feet away by the back fence is a young guy in swimming trunks throwing up in the snow.
EXT. PARTY – BALCONY – EVENING
Eleanor leans against the railing watching the party unfold below. She seems troubled.
VOICE (O.S.)
Elle? Is that you?
Eleanor turns around to see a young man standing behind her, roughly the same age as her. He has short brown hair and is exceptionally handsome.
She squints at him for a moment before recognizing him. She smiles.
ELEANOR
Lenny?!?
He nods as they embrace in a friendly hug.
LENNY
Eleanor, I can’t believe you’re here. I haven’t seen you since –
He pauses briefly.
ELEANOR
Since I moved away with my mother. It’s good to see you.
LENNY
It’s good to see you too. I heard about your mom. I’m sorry.
ELEANOR
Thanks.
Awkward BEAT.
Lenny leans against the rail next to her.
LENNY
So how have you been?
ELEANOR
Good. You?
LENNY
I’ve been okay. You know I work down at First Bank.
ELEANOR
Ooh, a banker. Just like your father.
He casually shrugs it off.
LENNY
I drive by our street everyday on the way to work. I think about you.
She blushes.
ELEANOR
I sat out on the old tire swing today.
They both laugh nostalgically.
LENNY
Eleanor, you look fantastic. Can I ask you a question?
She nods.
LENNY (cont.)
Where have you been the last ten years?
BEAT.
ELEANOR
Italy.
His eyes widen with surprise.
LENNY
Wow. I’m glad you’re back. Are you staying?
She indicates “I don’t know” with her hands.
ELEANOR
I haven’t decided.
LENNY
You should. It’d be nice to have my best friend back.
The electricity rises a notch as they look in each others eyes, faces close. Another girl shows up in the background.
TABITHA
Lenny, what the hell? You said you were gettin’ us some drinks.
She startles them both. Lenny especially as he rushes over to her and leads her to Eleanor.
She is the typical cheerleader-type. Beautiful blonde with perfect skin and complexion. Very uppity personality.
LENNY
Tabitha, this is Eleanor. We used to live next door to each other when we were kids.
Eleanor smiles politely. Tabitha seems to stare her down confrontationally before smirking.
ELEANOR
Nice to meet you.
TABITHA
Me too.
(to Lenny)
Come on, everyone is lookin’ for you.
He nods. She gives him a quick kiss on the cheek, marking her territory. She exits.
LENNY
Sorry.
Long BEAT.
LENNY
She’s my girlfriend.
ELEANOR
Figured that part out.
Eleanor looks away, her face turning red.
LENNY
We should hang out sometime. Like old times.
ELEANOR
Yeah.
He gives her another quick hug.
LENNY
I better go. It was great to see you, Elle. I’ll call you sometime, we can do something.
ELEANOR
Okay. Have fun.
He smiles as he exits the balcony. She sighs and peeks over at the pool party.
INT. KITCHEN – NIGHT
The party is still going strong. Eleanor maneuvers her way through a gathering of people to the keg. She fills her cup and takes a drink.
JACK GREENE enters. He’s about the same age as Eleanor, the typical tall, dark and handsome. Mysterious. He fills his cup up, eyeing Eleanor.
JACK
Hi. I’m Jack. You’re Kira’s sister, right?
ELEANOR
Step-sister. Yeah.
JACK
Awesome.
They both stand in silence as a small fight breaks out in front of them.
JACK
Listen, you wanna’ go for a walk or something?
She thinks about it for a moment. Some glass breaks in the distance where the fighting has moved to.
ELEANOR
Sure.
He motions with his hand for her to go and he follows.
As they go out the front door, Lenny stares at them jealously.
EXT. SIDEWALK – NIGHT
Eleanor and Jack slowly stroll down the snowy sidewalk. After they get a comfortable distance away from the house, Jack pulls out a small joint and lights it up.
JACK
You don’t mind, do you?
Though it seems to bother her, she shakes her head “no”.
He exhales a large puff of smoke.
JACK
So why is it that I’ve never met you? I’ve known Kira since like the seventh grade.
ELEANOR
I’ve lived in Italy with my mother. Since I was six.
JACK
No shit? Damn that must’ve been nice.
She shrugs.
ELEANOR
It had its moments. I had never met Kira, until yesterday.
JACK
Yeah, she’s an interesting girl. Kinda’ slutty.
She stops, looking quite offended. Jack is now just a silhouette in the dark street. He tosses his nearly finished joint into the large hedges behind them.
ELEANOR
I..I think I’m gonna’ head back. Kira’s probably lookin’ for me.
He forcefully grabs her arm as she starts to turn.
JACK
Oh, I was just kidding.
She backs up as far as possible before running into the large hedge. His body moves close to hers as he begins to kiss her neck.
ELEANOR
Stop it!
He continues insistently, not releasing his grip.
JACK
Come on, your sister’s a slut. I bet you are too.
Things begin to get way out of hand as she pushes with all her might, but to no avail.
ELEANOR
Get off of me!
JACK
Take it easy, just relax.
The struggle continues, until finally Eleanor calmly sighs.
Suddenly Jack yelps loudly and slumps to the icy pavement. He holds his manhood in anguish.
She wipes herself off and looks uncharacteristically angrily down at his writhing body.
ELEANOR
(fiercely)
Step-sister, you asshole!
He doesn’t even look at her as she turns and marches her way back to the party.
