EXT. BOAT DOCK - DAY
The scene fades in, showing a boat dock right outside of a small town in New York. Two men are standing on the dock right in front of a decent sized yacht. The younger of the two, Whitney, is of a decent build, and he has medium length brown hair. The older of the two, Rainsford, is also fairly built, and he has short darker hair. Whitney looks a little under 30 and Rainsford somewhere around 40. Whitney looks over at Rainsford.
WHITNEY So this yacht is supposed to get us to South America?
RAINSFORD Well, yeah. It's the only form of transport that I have in mind.
WHITNEY Why couldn't we just fly there or something?
RAINSFORD Well... What would be the fun in that exactly?
WHITNEY Why does it always have to be fun and not safe?
RAINSFORD Just get on the boat, Whitney.
Whitney listens, grabbing his suitcases and getting on the boat. Rainsford follows him up on, and they put their stuff in the fairly small on the deck. Whitney then comes out and opens what looks like a trap door. Stairs are then seen leading down, showing that there is more to the boat than it would seem.
WHITNEY How much did this thing cost you?
RAINSFORD Let me just say, it'll hold our load down and hopefully our bigger load on the way back up.
WHITNEY Jaguar gonna be easy to hunt down though?
RAINSFORD Not quite sure. I've never exactly hunted for jaguar before.
Rainsford goes back down onto the dock, grabbing three large cases that are all on a cart. He grabs the handle to the cart, pushing it up on the boat, and he pushes the cart into the room with the suitcases. He closes the door behind him, then he takes the ropes that are tying the boat to the dock and he throws them off, letting the boat go free along with the waves for a minute. The camera zooms out, showing the ocean and storm clouds can be seen out there. Whitney sees them as he comes back up.
WHITNEY Are we even going to get three miles out with that storm brewing up like that?
RAINSFORD We'll be good, don't worry, Whitney.
Whitney looks at Rainsford and Rainsford lets out a cocky grin, just to match his hunting attitude. The scene then cuts to black and the title appears in big letters.
EXT. OCEAN - NIGHT
The boat is seen, about a week later, on the ocean. Another huge storm is up, but right over the boat. The waves are huge and the boat doesn't have much control. Rainsford is seen, trying to steer, but he isn't having much luck against the horrendous ocean. He finally gets it going straight and the waves start to calm, the boat still rocking. He walks over to Whitney, who is trying to keep himself on his feet.
RAINSFORD You gotta have enough control over yourself to hold if you aren't going to fall over.
WHITNEY Sorry, I don't do much boating in the middle of huge storms like this one.
RAINSFORD Well, you want to hunt with the best and you're going to have to risk something!
WHITNEY Didn't know it was going to be my life though...
RAINSFORD Well, now you know!
Rainsford looks out onto the horizon, trying to find land when a huge wave comes up, rocking the boat greatly and he falls overboard. The waves continue to get bigger and bigger as he starts to swim around, not able to find the boat. He continues swimming and swimming. He starts to get tired, and things are seen from his point of view. You can see that he is starting to get tired, and he eventually passes out. The scene cuts to him being thrown onto an island shore. The camera zooms out as the scene fades to black.
EXT. ISLAND FOREST - NEXT MORNING
It is the next morning, and Rainsford wakes up slowly, finding himself in the middle of the island forest, not quite sure how he got there. He gets up onto his feet, seeing that his clothes are all ragged. He starts limping around, trying to find some sort of food or life. He continues walking until he sees a large manor-house on a hill. He walks over to it and sees a large hedge wall of some sort.
RAINSFORD What in the hell is that?
The camera pans out again to reveal a large hedge maze. The scene then cuts to the manor porch a few minutes later. Rainsford is in front of the door and he grabs one of the large knockers in the shape of a panther paw. He knocks on the door and waits a minute. He doesn't hear anything and nobody answers, so he knocks again. He again waits. No response. He reaches for the door knob when the door swings open. A large man can be seen, hairier than anything Rainsford has ever seen. He looks up at the large man.
RAINSFORD Hey... Could you, uh, tell me where I am at exactly?
The man doesn't respond.
RAINSFORD You talk at all?
The man again doesn't respond.
RAINSFORD
You got a name, big guy?
A voice is heard from down the hall.
VOICE Why yes, he does, in fact, have a name.
A smaller man is seen from behind him. The man is dressed in a suit that would be seen in the jungles of Africa, or really any jungle where people would be likely to hunt. Zaroff reaches his hand out to Rainsford.
ZAROFF I am Zaroff, and this is Ivan, my large bodyguard. He does not talk, because unfortunately, he is a mute. But he does his job, and that is all that really counts.
RAINSFORD You mind if I grace you with my presence? I am a lost hunter, and I'm sure you've heard of me.
ZAROFF What is your name?
RAINSFORD Sanger Rainsford.
ZAROFF No, no, I do not recognize the name. But please, please, come on in.
Rainsford follows Zaroff down the hall, and Ivan slams the door shut. He follows behind the two men. Along the hall, Rainsford sees the heads of many wild animals mounted on the wall. Rainsford and Zaroff eventually head down the hall getting to a large dining room, with now full animals stuffed instead of just heads.
RAINSFORD So... you look to be a very good hunter.
ZAROFF I'm one of the best known hunters out there. I've hunted about every animal known to man. I've gotten quite bored actually.
RAINSFORD That so?
ZAROFF Yes. So I've taken to something new. Something different.
RAINSFORD And what is that?
ZAROFF I've decided that I should hunt something that is just about as smart, if not even smarter than I am.
RAINSFORD So, what are you hunting nowadays then?
ZAROFF You ready for this? You're not going to expect what I'm about to tell you, and must say, you will find it a bit of a shock.
RAINSFORD I've hunted great things and been in great danger and seen the biggest shocks that almost all hunters wouldn't dream of seeing. Tell me what you're hunting.
ZAROFF I've been hunting... people.
A look of surprise wipes across the face of Rainsford. He continues to just stare at Zaroff.
ZAROFF I knew you'd think of it that way.
RAINSFORD People? Why people?
ZAROFF Like I've said, I've gotten bored with it. I've just decided to find myself something new and smart to hunt.
RAINSFORD Where do you find them?
ZAROFF I wait for them to wash up. Stormy area around here. We get new guys every so often, and I hunt them.
RAINSFORD So you will hunt stranded people who have no means of protecting themselves?
ZAROFF Well, I give them food and a survival knife. Their survival is up to them.
RAINSFORD Even if they have no experience outdoors?
ZAROFF Well, normally, they are hunters, kind of like you, who were looking for good South American game, and they were just unlucky.
RAINSFORD I see.
ZAROFF I will give you shelter for tonight. We will talk about what is yet to come for you tomorrow.
RAINSFORD I can't.
ZAROFF Can't what?
RAINSFORD Stay with you, knowing what you are going to do to me.
ZAROFF Then we'll start tonight!
RAINSFORD No you won't.
Rainsford heads toward the front door, only to run into the gigantic man, Ivan. He falls over from the force of hitting Ivan, and Zaroff walks over to him.
ZAROFF Maybe you don't understand. You have no way of escaping me. I am going to give you three days. If I haven't killed you and you aren't dead from the nature around here, I'll give you a free ride home.
RAINSFORD Well, that's... very... generous of you?
ZAROFF If you like to call it that, then yes. It is.
Rainsford stands up. Zaroff walks over to him, handing him a small sack of food and a survival knife.
RAINSFORD So... I just run off now?
ZAROFF Yes. I am going to give you one hour while I prepare everything.
RAINSFORD Alright.
Rainsford grabs the stuff and runs out the door. Zaroff looks up at the large grandfather clock in the room and chuckles.
ZAROFF I have another fine specimen to hunt for. How long do you think he will last Ivan?
Ivan just looks, a smile running across his face.
ZAROFF Honestly Ivan, I think he could last almost the whole three days. He seemed like he knew what he would be doing out there.
Zaroff gets up and walks over to a very large cabinet. When he opens it, all kinds of guns are revealed, any different kind of gun that someone could imagine. Zaroff grabs a small handgun, then he walks over to Ivan. Ivan moves and Zaroff goes out into the hallway, turning the light on. He walks about halfway down, opening a door that was not seen before. When he opens the door, even more guns are revealed. Zaroff starts reaching around, looking at the guns.
EXT. JUNGLE - AN HOUR LATER
Rainsford is seen running through the forests. He finds a large tree and he climbs up. He looks for a good hiding spot. He sees Zaroff walking out of the house, a gun in his hand.
RAINSFORD Shit. He's ready to go.
Ivan comes out, standing right beside Zaroff, and the scene cuts closer to them, so they are now seen instead of Rainsford.
ZAROFF You don't think he went into the hedge maze this quickly, do you?
Ivan looks over at the hedge maze. Zaroff then starts to walk out, and Ivan stands there, watching Zaroff chase after Rainsford, following some footprints that are seen in the muddy ground. He continues to follow, getting closer and closer to Rainsford, and Rainsford has a look of worry on his face as Zaroff gets right under the tree. Rainsford looks straight down to see that Zaroff is very close. When Zaroff looks up in the tree, he doesn't seen Rainsford. He looks up, confused, as the footprints come to an end right there. Zaroff continues walking, just hoping he finds Rainsford.
ZAROFF You cannot hide forever, you know. You'll have to come out some time.
Rainsford hears Zaroff not far behind him, and he starts running faster. He pulls his knife out, seeing a wall of dirt. He starts cutting in at the dirt, trying to pull enough out so he can hide, blending in with the night. He finally does and pushes himself against the hole, which he barely fits inside standing, and Zaroff walks right past him, not following footsteps anymore. The giant wall collapses on Rainsford, and he gets back up, hoping that he wasn't heard. He wipes himself off, running the other way now. Rainsford looks down at his watch, but it is stopped.
RAINSFORD Damn. Must have gotten damaged when I fell in the water tonight.
Rainsford sighs and starts running. The scene then cuts back to Zaroff. He looks at his watch. It reads 1:09 AM.
ZAROFF Wow. It's late tonight. I'll continue hunting tomorrow. I have smart prey, so this should be some great fun.
Zaroff starts heading back to the giant house, and he again barely walks past Rainsford, who is putting together some branches to build a small shelter for the night. Rainsford suddenly stops, seeing Zaroff, but Zaroff doesn't notice Rainsford there. As Zaroff passes, Rainsford finishes building the shelter. He pulls a piece of meat out of the small bag that was given to him and he takes a bite out of it, chewing it thoughtfully. A few minutes later he puts the fire out and climbs inside the small shelter that he built himself, knowing that he can't sleep long before he will be hunted again.
EXT. OPEN AREA - DAY
It is the next day, and Rainsford is already awake, trying to set something up. He has a long vine that he found, set right next to a piece of cloth from his ripped jacket, which he ripped off moments before. He then has that tied to a nearby tree, where he is planning to hide with the vine in hand. He sees Zaroff coming, this time a dog with him.
RAINSFORD Uh-oh. He's got a hound with him today.
Rainsford runs off, forgetting the plan altogether, and finding somewhere to hide. He keeps running, and he realizes that the dog has picked up his scent and is gaining on him. He turns around, pulling out the knife and slashing it at the dog. The dog takes a few steps back and Rainsford slashes again, and the dog falls over onto its stomach. Rainsford then sees Zaroff pointing a gun straight at him.
ZAROFF Kill my dog, then I'll kill you!
Zaroff shoots, hitting Rainsford in the back of the knee, but the bullet only hits him, instead of going in. Rainsford falls over, feeling some severe pain.
RAINSFORD Oh my God! That hurt!
ZAROFF Better than killing you though, isn't it? Although, I guess I will be killing you in the next few seconds anyway, so it's not like that matters, does it?
Zaroff points the gun at Rainsford's face, and Rainsford looks up at him.
RAINSFORD Seriously though, Zaroff, why would you hunt people? It's just not a right idea.
ZAROFF Because they give me a challenge that I've always been looking for while hunting.
Zaroff gets ready to shoot Rainsford, but just in time, Rainsford slashes at Zaroff's leg. Zaroff drops the gun and Rainsford makes a run for it. Zaroff limps off toward his house and the scene cuts to a few minutes later. Zaroff is seen, wiping his wound down and bandaging it up, making sure he doesn't bleed to death.
ZAROFF That man is not going to live to see tomorrow. If it's the last thing that I do, I'm making sure I have his head for a trophy.
Zaroff pulls his blood-covered pant leg down over his bandages and he looks out the window showing the view of the jungle.
ZAROFF This man is just too smart to be hunted down using regular tactics. I must find new ways of finding him.
INT. HOUSE - THAT NIGHT
It is later that night, and Zaroff is in his house, drinking a cup of tea. He looks outside, seeing that darkness is beginning to fall.
ZAROFF I'm sure that my prey is wondering where I've gotten to. I guess I must go out and find him another time. He still has two days to run.
Zaroff grabs his handgun and his rifle, putting the handgun in his pocket and carrying the rifle outside. He walks down the hall and the door shuts behind him. He doesn't see anything, and Ivan is nowhere to be found.
ZAROFF Who is there?
RAINSFORD Oh, your stupid prey is all.
ZAROFF Wh--what are you talking about, Rainsford? You're a close friend of mine.
RAINSFORD So... You kill your friends, then, is that correct?
ZAROFF Well... hunting you was to just... show you that I liked you, and I was testing to see if you were worthy of my friendship.
RAINSFORD I may be unarmed at the moment, but I still have a mind to kill you right now.
ZAROFF Correct, but you do not have the means to kill me, sadly for you, and happily for me.
RAINSFORD It wouldn't take me very long to take you down and steal your weapons.
Zaroff pulls his handgun out and shoots at Rainsford. Rainsford barely ducks when he sees the gun come out and the bullet misses him, Rainsford tackles Zaroff down, and Zaroff drops both of his guns. Rainsford starts punching Zaroff in the nose, and Zaroff starts bleeding from his nose.
RAINSFORD It's time for someone to show you how to hunt a person the right way!
Rainsford gets up and grabs the gun Zaroff shot at him with. He points it at Zaroff's head, ready to pull the trigger. Ivan comes through the door, a large gun in his hands. Rainsford sees him and runs the other way, barely out of the way of Ivan's shots. Rainsford gets out the door into the jungle and Ivan walks over to Zaroff. He picks Zaroff up by the arm, helping him out to the kitchen, where Zaroff holds a wet paper towel up to his bleeding nose.
ZAROFF This one... He is just too good for me to keep up with. I shall have him taken down by tomorrow night. But as for tonight? I am finished. He may have his fun.
Zaroff walks down another hallway and up a set of stairs. From there, he goes in the upstairs hall and opens his bedroom door. He sits down on his bed looking out the window. A few seconds later, Rainsford is seen coming from behind a curtain. He holds a handgun to Zaroff's head and uses his unarmed hand to cover Zaroff's mouth to stop him from screaming.
RAINSFORD Good evening, General. I suppose that this means I win though.
Zaroff is silent and the scene cuts to black and the credits roll.
